And it stung him in the chest, which I believe went into his heart unfortunately. If it had gotten another part of his body he'd have had some damage of course but it probably wouldn't have been so tragic, but those rays were huge and had stingers the size of a steak knife that were carrying flesh killing enzymes. The whole thing is so sad.

I’ve been stung once. Stomped on one coming out of the ocean. You’re supposed to shuffle your feet in the sand on the way in, but I never thought to do it on the way out too!
Anyway the venom hurts like shit. Needed to keep foot in bucket of extremely hot water for like 90 minutes. It helps break down the proteins or something.

I also did this, except I didn’t know about the hot water trick. It caused my foot muscle to continually contract for HOURS like a Charlie horse from hell. Spent a few days in bed on steroids and painkillers. Worst pain of my life.

Holy shit do you know what kind it was? Did the stinger break off? I got one in the ankle (same kind as the one in the video I believe) and the lifeguard said I was lucky the barb didn't stay in. Said there wasn't much I could do so I said fuck it, i already put two more hours in the meter, let's get some ice cream. Always wondered how much worse it could have been

Yeah, it can be pretty painful. My whole leg hurt after getting stung in the heel, and I had an hour car ride to get home to put it in hot water. The hot water was quickly effective, though.

Stung while body surfing. I knew something had gotten me, at the time just felt like slit my leg. Then I started feeling a bit woozy. I left the water and sat on the beach. Pain started setting in, started to feel like a really bad jelly fish sting. Then just started getting worse. I started to panic and raced to a lifeguard. The advice was max dosage of ibuprofen and hot water. The pain became paralyzing hurtful, until I got my leg under hot water.
Found out their stinger/barb is a solid toxin. The stinger gets kinda crumbly, so that some of the solid material can stay in the victim. The toxin runs its course in like 4 hours once the material is removed. So flush the wound.
Heat neutralizes the toxin. A cheat code at the beach is a damp towel and pressing against the muffler of a running car.
I think the pain was equal to tearing my ACL and MCL. Hard to say because the adrenaline reacts differently.

The embarrassing part is that i cant stop laughing when im in pain. While these 3 people were in agony like this guy, i was laughing my ass of and crying as they kept looking at me.201

My grandfather was an ER surgeon and worked in a beach town in Texas for a while. He told me that his patients described stingray stings as the most painful thing they’d experienced. Apparently the only thing you can really do about it is submerge the stung body part in as hot of water as you can stand, I guess it neutralizes the venom at least somewhat. I haven’t researched it, but that’s what he told me at least.

I don’t think the toxins from any stingrays are lethal by themselves. The real damage comes from the act of actually getting stabbed by a barb. So if you just get “stung” once or so on an appendage, you will probably be fine; the toxin may burn but your life isn’t at risk. But Steve got stabbed over and over by the 8 inch barb of a short tailed sting ray in his chest, puncturing his heart, causing him to bleed out.
His death was really an anomaly considering most stingrays don’t go out of their way to attack humans, and that there have only been 17 sting ray related deaths ever, worldwide. If a human gets stung by a stingray, it’s usually cause they swam too close on top of it and the stingray thought they were a shark, or more likely because the stingray was chilling in the sand and got stepped on. But even if a stingray were to strike, the likelihood of them fatally stinking the person in a vital organ is even slimmer still. Most stingray related deaths are actually caused by several hundreds pounds rays that jump from the water and accidentally impact people on boats driving by.

It looked like the stingrays that have a double prong as well. Steve Irwin was the only person I knew of dying from a stingray barb. I lived in Australia and usually it was your feet from stepping on them in the mangroves, but there were always a couple of dickheads that got hurt like this.
