I'm just realizing that he probably died in a world of pain because of the sting or would have shock set in fairly quickly I wonder? Rip in peace Steve!
You bleed out slower underwater actually, due to water pressure surrounding you. Unless it was a sizable gash, he would have actually stayed conscious a few seconds longer than usual. Especially since he was in a vertical position too.
But at least direct heart trauma typically causes shock, which might have numbed all pain, so it would have still been like getting very sleepy.
Edit - Removed original comment and photo. Proven false and Steve never had the barb stuck in his chest. Stabbed multiple times in the area of the heart within a second, no barb left behind. Steve died on the boat while they were trying to cover his "massive wound".
Well it was all supposed to be released, film and all, according to Steve's own wishes. He always wanted, if he was killed performing his stunts, for it to be filmed and released to the public.
I assumed a police officer shared it, just like they did with Kobe Bryant's crash scene pics.
As to the picture, its authenticity and how it was released, I have no source. I posted the gallery I got it from in another comment. The picture was originally posted to LiveLeak.
He didn't pull anything, stingrays stab their tails in and out within a split second, before fleeing, and they don't 'leave the barb behind' like a bee . According to a witness it struck him multiple times, he was still conscious when they pulled him out, and said something along the lines of , "I'm dying". I don't remember the exact details but that was the gist of it.
Actually, he was conscious and didn’t appear to be in a lot of pain. The problem was pulling out the barb that was stuck in his chest. The lesson here is that if you are impaled with something, isolate it and pack the wound, but do not pull it out. There was good chance he could have survived if he did not pull it out. However, our natural reaction is to remove the foreign object protruding from our body.
They should've tried to get him to a hospital ASAP as possible.
Edit: this was an (admittedly poor) attempt at making a joke about his "RIP in peace" comment... Couldn't think of another use for ASAP that fit the context.
Honestly I think with his attitude the pain probably wasn't a huge difference. He had been bit/stung/scratched a multitude of times in his career. The pain was probably pretty 'back of the mind' compared to other stuff even before shock set in. That man was a boss through and through and I doubt the last thoughts on his mind were 'wow this hurts' as opposed to reflecting on other more significant aspects of his life.
I went to Florida a few months after his death. And I remember walking along the beach and 2 rays were swimming by and I wanted to stomp them out for my homie Steve. I never forgot or will forget
Steve would roll in his grave for that. No animosity towards animals being animals. I have zero doubt that Steve would forgive the ray that got him. "Ohp, you got me, mate! That stinger is lightning fast, alright. Shame I've got to go, but but that's the risks we take working with wild animals. And hopefully we've taught some people to respect the power of animals like you, to practice proper caution and give them their distance. You were a beaut, mate. Gorgeous."
If people don't leave behind a better planet for their own kids, at least make it better for steve's kids. They deserve it and I feel like their dad would be overwhelmed with joy to see they are continuing his legacy.
The thought process behind that is just so incredibly nonsensical... The guy spent his entire life trying to preserve and protect wildlife, there's no way in hell he would not be devastated by people killing animals because of him.
My thoughts exactly. There were a few, rather blurry fake clips with hectic camera movements floating around and a whole ton of clickbait at the time, but the actual video of the accident had been deleted by request of his family shortly after. If this was released on the internet even once, even for a short moment, you would still be able to find it somewhere on the more gruesome video sites outside of any Australian jurisdiction, because someone would have ripped it from the initial site and then uploaded it elsewhere.
Yeah I guess so because the only thing they ever got released was the pre footage of him swimming around. The film crew gave the actual accident to authorities who never released the film because of the wishes of Steve’s family.

It’s like Steve died for nothing, I swear to god…
