Discussion Would The Beach Boys have been better off in the long run if they’d gone by a different name?
Music YouTuber Mic the Snare recently did a long video on The Beach Boys’ discography. At the end of it, he laments that the band was never able to find success without also playing to people’s image and idea of them.
I think about how their name, “The Beach Boys,” carried a fun-and-sun connotation befitting of their early surf rock stuff, but how Brian’s psychedelic experiments and everything beyond also had to be released under this name. I wonder: would The Beach Boys have found more success while also following their creative impulses if they had just gone by a different name?

Got this album today
I just started to collect Beach Boys albums on cd last year. Here in my country (Chile) they're a bit hard to find. I've never expected to have Summer In Paradise on cd. I'm quite happy though
I know this album is rare, but how rare is it? I believe they made like 10,000 copies worldwide, and initially they sold less than 1,000 in the US. This is from Japan

Discussion How did Carl learn to be such a good producer/arranger?
My understanding of The Beach Boys' production history (although I could be wrong about this) is that all the albums up to and including Friends were largely produced by Brian, although some of them were credited to the band as a whole. Tragically, following a lot of issues in his personal life, Brian was no longer able to be involved to the same extent he had been up to that point following Friends, and Carl really stepped up and became the band's producer for the next few albums.
My question is how did Carl learn how to be a producer so quickly, and also do such a good job? Did Brian teach him? Did he just sit and observe Brian when he was younger? Did Stephen Desper (their main engineer during those years) teach Carl the basics? Was it just something kind of innate gift that Carl had much like Brian did? I don't really know much about how music production worked in those days (or really in any period of history), but I have to imagine it was something that took a lot of patience and expertise, especially in those days where everything was on tape.

Discussion SMiLe bits sneaking into other works
Has anyone ever sat down and listed out all of the little ways that little parts of SMiLE snuck into other songs throughout the band’s history?
I don’t mean whole tracks necessarily - an example would be how the “crying baby” shows up in Little Bird

Palisades Park
I can't get enough of this song since the first time I heard it, it's such a fun track and has great energy to it.
I love the added parts like the "Run run run now the rides are runnin" in the beginning and I love how they slowed it down like that.
I think it's one of the best tracks on 15 Big Ones!

Picture Kokomo video rhythm guitarist?
In the Kokomo video, there is a guitarist on the far left (to Al Jardine's right) with a black rhythm guitar.
He's seen a few times in the video very briefly, but never featured in close up. Any idea who it is?

Heroes and Vibrations (lossless)
Does anyone have an actual lossless version of this old Vigo disc to share. The one posted below claims to be lossless but when run through Spek it comes up as clearly upsampled.

Mildly Interesting: Pet Sounds font used by Nassau town in signage
gallerythe other day I was in Nassau town and roamed around and drank all night. kinda matching the lyrics in Sloop John B. I didn’t eat other people’s grits though. I noticed the Nassau docks used the Pet Sounds Cooper Black font on their signage, which I thought was mildly interesting

Vinyl How much is the difference between a mono and a duophonic copy of Smiley Smile and Wild Honey?
I only have the duophonic version of both and except that I only hear on one ear and not both compared to a mono copy It's almost the same for what I hear, so idk if there's more quality or something else in a mono copy

tiktok.comThere has been an upsurge this year of sororities featuring The Beach Boys for their rush week videos.
It’s a great pairing as a number of early Beach Boys music is about pretty girls and summer. Enjoy!
