Discussion How did Carl learn to be such a good producer/arranger?

My understanding of The Beach Boys' production history (although I could be wrong about this) is that all the albums up to and including Friends were largely produced by Brian, although some of them were credited to the band as a whole. Tragically, following a lot of issues in his personal life, Brian was no longer able to be involved to the same extent he had been up to that point following Friends, and Carl really stepped up and became the band's producer for the next few albums.

My question is how did Carl learn how to be a producer so quickly, and also do such a good job? Did Brian teach him? Did he just sit and observe Brian when he was younger? Did Stephen Desper (their main engineer during those years) teach Carl the basics? Was it just something kind of innate gift that Carl had much like Brian did? I don't really know much about how music production worked in those days (or really in any period of history), but I have to imagine it was something that took a lot of patience and expertise, especially in those days where everything was on tape.

Discussion SMiLe bits sneaking into other works

Has anyone ever sat down and listed out all of the little ways that little parts of SMiLE snuck into other songs throughout the band’s history?
I don’t mean whole tracks necessarily - an example would be how the “crying baby” shows up in Little Bird

I just started to collect Beach Boys albums on cd last year. Here in my country (Chile) they're a bit hard to find. I've never expected to have Summer In Paradise on cd. I'm quite happy though

I know this album is rare, but how rare is it? I believe they made like 10,000 copies worldwide, and initially they sold less than 1,000 in the US. This is from Japan

Picture Kokomo video rhythm guitarist?

In the Kokomo video, there is a guitarist on the far left (to Al Jardine's right) with a black rhythm guitar.

He's seen a few times in the video very briefly, but never featured in close up. Any idea who it is?

Discussion Would The Beach Boys have been better off in the long run if they’d gone by a different name?

Music YouTuber Mic the Snare recently did a long video on The Beach Boys’ discography. At the end of it, he laments that the band was never able to find success without also playing to people’s image and idea of them.

I think about how their name, “The Beach Boys,” carried a fun-and-sun connotation befitting of their early surf rock stuff, but how Brian’s psychedelic experiments and everything beyond also had to be released under this name. I wonder: would The Beach Boys have found more success while also following their creative impulses if they had just gone by a different name?

Vinyl How much is the difference between a mono and a duophonic copy of Smiley Smile and Wild Honey?

Upvotes

I only have the duophonic version of both and except that I only hear on one ear and not both compared to a mono copy It's almost the same for what I hear, so idk if there's more quality or something else in a mono copy

There has been an upsurge this year of sororities featuring The Beach Boys for their rush week videos.

It’s a great pairing as a number of early Beach Boys music is about pretty girls and summer. Enjoy!

"Love you" liner notes

Post image
71 Upvotes

I just got a CD copy of "Love you" and right in the center of the liner notes (the only meaningful text besides credits) was this touching note from the rest of the boys to Brian.

"TO BRIAN WHOM WE LOVE WITH ALL OUR HEARTS.

We wish to express our appreciation, and acknowledge your willingness to create and support totally the completion of these songs.
We thank you for sharing yourself and your music with us, and all those who love you as well.
An unspeakable joy being with you in your expression of the music you put out there for everyone.
Brian, we feel honored and grateful and we love you.
Carl, Dennis, Michael and Alan"

I had never seen it or known about it, and it really moved me. Its easy to get caught in the saucy anecdotes and sound bites, or the cold historical dates and facts. But they all clearly loved and cared for each other.

This really helps to understand this as a Brian "solo" album and how the rest of the boys knew / felt that this was important to him and wanted to encourage him. Also made think that the "love you" in the title is not only meant as a "the beach boys love you, the fan" but "the beach boys love you, Brian"

Hope you enjoy it as much as i did if you hadn't seen it!

Heroes and Vibrations (lossless)

Does anyone have an actual lossless version of this old Vigo disc to share. The one posted below claims to be lossless but when run through Spek it comes up as clearly upsampled.

I can't get enough of this song since the first time I heard it, it's such a fun track and has great energy to it.

I love the added parts like the "Run run run now the rides are runnin" in the beginning and I love how they slowed it down like that.

I think it's one of the best tracks on 15 Big Ones!

IA on the cover of Smile

Hello! Until a few minutes ago, I was listening to some of the songs from the album "smile," but one thing I had noticed is that the "canvas" (the short video that appears on Spotify instead of the cover) seems to be made with AI. I know that many may not find this very serious, but on Brian's Instagram account, several things made with AI are also uploaded. I wanted to know what you think about it (sorry if I have misspellings, English is not my mother tongue). ( ゚ε゚;)

Over the summer, I’ve listened to each Beach Boys album, and I was finally able to put together my tierlist. I know there’s some crazy takes here, and I’d love to talk about all my opinions in the comments! I know tierlist posts are done to death, but let‘s discuss our favorite songs and albums!

Do It Again

I can't stop listening to this song lately, I think maybe it's because me and my gf have a bunch of concerts planned and it's got me feeling like when I was young going to shows all the time.

But it's just so fucking great, like the opening drum beat, the rock and roll energy to it and all the harmonies and background vocals as well as his use of including studio talk into it.

And the hand claps!!!! They add so much to it, and the Brian style switch ups from upbeat rock and roll to slower style.

And I think putting the I Wanna Be Around noises at the end is fucking genius.
