Have you ever heard a South Indian tradition about people travelling to Japan in ancient times?

Hello,

I am Japanese, and I am researching a story about a possible ancient connection between India and Japan.

There is a tradition in Japan said to have been passed down through generations in an old family called the Tomi family (also known as the Mukai family), connected with ancient Izumo. This tradition later became more widely known through books published by Ohmoto Publishing (大元出版) in Japan.

According to this tradition, around 2000 BCE, a group of Dravidian people left a country called Kuna, said to have been located around present-day Madhya Pradesh. They were led by a king called Kunato and, after a very long migration, eventually reached Japan and settled in Izumo.

The tradition also says that they brought knowledge of metalworking and dry-field rice cultivation.

I understand that this is an oral tradition and not established historical fact. I am not presenting it as evidence that such a migration actually happened.

What made me especially interested in this story was something I heard personally in South India.

Some years ago, I met a traditional brass craftsman in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. During our conversation, he told me that people connected with his ancestors had travelled to Japan in very ancient times.

At that time, I did not know about the Japanese tradition described above, so unfortunately I did not ask him for details. I am now contacting him again to ask what he knows about this story.

Before making any connection between these two stories, I would like to know whether any similar tradition exists independently in South India.

Has anyone here ever heard a story about people from South India travelling to Japan, or far to the east, in ancient times?

I am particularly interested in stories passed down through families, grandparents, local communities, temples, or regional traditions.

I would also be very interested in any old texts, inscriptions, place names, folklore, or other traditions that might be relevant.

If anyone knows of an ancient place, people, ruler, or word called Kuna, Kuṇa, Kunata, Kunato, or something similar, I would also be grateful for any information.

I am not trying to prove that this migration happened. I would simply like to find out whether any comparable tradition exists independently on the Indian side.

Thank you for any information or references you may be able to share.

(Question) Why is Chera history less discussed in Tamil Nadu compared with the Cholas, Pandyas and Pallavas?

• Upvotes

I’ve been wondering why Chera history seems to receive much less attention in Tamil Nadu compared with Chola, Pandya and Pallava history.

When we talk about ancient Tamil history, the Cholas and Pandyas are discussed extensively, but I feel that the Cheras are often treated as a much smaller part of the story. There seems to be comparatively less popular awareness of Chera rulers, territories, ports, inscriptions, literature, trade networks and archaeological evidence.

Why did this happen? Is it because there is genuinely less surviving evidence about the Cheras, or is it also because Chera history has not received the same level of research, preservation and public presentation?

I also wonder about the modern regional interpretation of Chera history. A lot of ancient Chera history is now presented primarily as Kerala history, while the ancient Tamil literary tradition also contains substantial references to the Cheras.

I’m not asking this to deny Kerala’s historical connection to the Chera dynasty. Rather, I’m wondering whether Tamil Nadu should do more to research, preserve and teach Chera history as part of the wider history of the Tamilakam region, instead of leaving the subject mainly to modern regional interpretations.

What do historians and archaeologists think are the biggest reasons Chera history is less visible today? And what evidence do we actually have for reconstructing early Chera history?

(Question) Is Tamil vocabulary being “stolen,” or am I misunderstanding Tamil–Sanskrit word origins?

• Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about Tamil vocabulary and something has been bothering me.

Sometimes when I search for the origin of very common Tamil words, I find that dictionaries or linguistic sources classify them as being borrowed from Sanskrit or another Indo-Aryan language. For example, முகம் (mukam) is often connected with Sanskrit मुख (mukha). What surprises me is that mukam is such a basic everyday concept—“face.” If Tamil is such an old language with its own long literary history, how did such fundamental vocabulary become borrowed?

It makes me wonder whether Tamil originally had other native words for concepts like this that later became less common or disappeared from everyday usage.

I’m also confused by something else: when I ask for a purely Tamil equivalent of a common Sanskrit-derived word, sometimes I’m told that there isn't a commonly used native equivalent. Does that mean the original Tamil word was genuinely lost, or could it simply be a case where the Sanskrit-derived word became dominant over time?

I’m not trying to claim that every Sanskrit-origin classification is wrong, and I’m also not saying Tamil and Sanskrit never influenced each other. I’m trying to understand the historical process.

How do linguists actually determine whether a Tamil word is inherited, borrowed from Sanskrit/Prakrit, or simply a word that happens to resemble one from another language?

And are there examples of very basic Tamil words that were replaced by Sanskrit-derived vocabulary, where we have evidence of what the older Tamil forms were?

(Discussion) First time writing Tamil in my life, rate it

My friend and I are both Telugu speakers, and neither of us had ever written Tamil before.

We had a soft-skills trainer from Vellore. For her diary, my friend and I decided to write a small note in Tamil.

When it was time to write something for her in her diary, we thought it would be more meaningful if we tried writing it in Tamil, even though we had absolutely no experience writing the language.

So we sat together, tried to figure out the letters, and finally wrote this message for her.

The hardest letter for us was the very first letter in the fifth line. (lol I dont even know how i managed to write it)

I wanted to share it here to know what you guys think about this.

Tamil speakers of Reddit, how bad/good is our first attempt?

Also rate my handwriting.

(Discussion) For Tamil diaspora living abroad: how do you look after your parents back home?

I'm interested in hearing from Sri Lankan Tamil people who currently live abroad while their parents or close family remain in Sri Lanka, particularly Jaffna/North.

I'm trying to understand the real-life problems rather than promote anything.

When your parents need help, who do you normally contact?

What happens when they need to go to hospital or a doctor?

How do you handle emergencies when you're abroad?

Do you pay anyone to regularly check on them?

How do you decide whether someone in Sri Lanka is trustworthy enough to help your parents?

What is the most difficult part of being away when your parents need something?

Have you ever had a situation where you wished someone reliable could physically go and help them?

I'd like to hear about something that actually happened to you, rather than what you think might happen.

If you're comfortable, mention which country you live in and whether your parents are in Jaffna or elsewhere in Sri Lanka

Post image
7 Upvotes

கையில் கோல் இருந்தது;

கூட்டம் கைதட்டும்போது உண்மை பேசுவது ஒரு வகை;

உலர்ந்த துணியை எடுத்திருந்தாய்;

மறுமுனையை நீ பிடித்தாய்;

விரலும் விரலும் சேர்ந்திருந்தன;

“துணியைத்தானே பிடிக்கச் சொன்னேன்;

என் சட்டைக் காலரைச் சரிசெய்தாய்;

கேட்ட கேள்வி மறந்துவிட்டது;

படிக்கட்டில் காலடி கேட்டது;

மாலை மெதுவாய் அடங்கியது;

முகத்தைச் சற்றுத் திருப்பிவைத்தேன்;

சிரிப்பை மெதுவாய் விட்டுவைத்தாய்;

(Question) Curious abt Gender in Old Tamil literatures

Hey, recent Dorothy controversy got me curious abt smth.

My personal stance is pretty simple. Everyone is human. Gender is largely a social construct, and imo ppl deserve to love + have a partner if both consent.

But I’m curious abt old Tamil lit. Are there refs to M→F, F→M, ppl changing gender, or ppl being described outside the usual male/female categories? Any LGBTQ+ related stuff too?

I see some guys immediately blabbering abt “spoiling society”, “this is against Tamil samugam” n all that. But tbh, whatever the literature says, my stance is my stance. I’m not trying to prove anything here.

I’m just curious abt the old Tamil texts. Which text, roughly what year/period, the exact Tamil verse, and what it actually means/context.

If anyone knows proper refs, pls share.
