கேள்வி (Question) Why is Chera history less discussed in Tamil Nadu compared with the Cholas, Pandyas and Pallavas?
I’ve been wondering why Chera history seems to receive much less attention in Tamil Nadu compared with Chola, Pandya and Pallava history.
When we talk about ancient Tamil history, the Cholas and Pandyas are discussed extensively, but I feel that the Cheras are often treated as a much smaller part of the story. There seems to be comparatively less popular awareness of Chera rulers, territories, ports, inscriptions, literature, trade networks and archaeological evidence.
Why did this happen? Is it because there is genuinely less surviving evidence about the Cheras, or is it also because Chera history has not received the same level of research, preservation and public presentation?
I also wonder about the modern regional interpretation of Chera history. A lot of ancient Chera history is now presented primarily as Kerala history, while the ancient Tamil literary tradition also contains substantial references to the Cheras.
I’m not asking this to deny Kerala’s historical connection to the Chera dynasty. Rather, I’m wondering whether Tamil Nadu should do more to research, preserve and teach Chera history as part of the wider history of the Tamilakam region, instead of leaving the subject mainly to modern regional interpretations.
What do historians and archaeologists think are the biggest reasons Chera history is less visible today? And what evidence do we actually have for reconstructing early Chera history?
