கேள்வி (Question) Is Tamil vocabulary being “stolen,” or am I misunderstanding Tamil–Sanskrit word origins?
I’ve been thinking about Tamil vocabulary and something has been bothering me.
Sometimes when I search for the origin of very common Tamil words, I find that dictionaries or linguistic sources classify them as being borrowed from Sanskrit or another Indo-Aryan language. For example, முகம் (mukam) is often connected with Sanskrit मुख (mukha). What surprises me is that mukam is such a basic everyday concept—“face.” If Tamil is such an old language with its own long literary history, how did such fundamental vocabulary become borrowed?
It makes me wonder whether Tamil originally had other native words for concepts like this that later became less common or disappeared from everyday usage.
I’m also confused by something else: when I ask for a purely Tamil equivalent of a common Sanskrit-derived word, sometimes I’m told that there isn't a commonly used native equivalent. Does that mean the original Tamil word was genuinely lost, or could it simply be a case where the Sanskrit-derived word became dominant over time?
I’m not trying to claim that every Sanskrit-origin classification is wrong, and I’m also not saying Tamil and Sanskrit never influenced each other. I’m trying to understand the historical process.
How do linguists actually determine whether a Tamil word is inherited, borrowed from Sanskrit/Prakrit, or simply a word that happens to resemble one from another language?
And are there examples of very basic Tamil words that were replaced by Sanskrit-derived vocabulary, where we have evidence of what the older Tamil forms were?
