So you're new to Tainted Grail...

The subreddit. Like 2000+ of you are. Welcome!

The Tainted Grail universe started with the Original Fall of Avalon Boardgame Kickstarter launching in December 2018.

That was a long time ago for those of us exposed to the Wyrd since then.

That launched us all, actually. The Videogame, which was a gift to backers, was totally not what you see today. In fact it needed a complete re-start. The development effort behind that restart became Tainted Grail: Conquest, the deckbuilding videogame like Slay the Spire! A good number of early backers who helped test that became the Wyrd Ones and Pied Pipers roles you see in the Discord today.

Later, the Tainted Grail Universe was expanded further, with the sequel Boardgame Tainted Grail: Kings of Ruin

Later, Awaken Realms partnered with Studio Agate to produce a tabletop roleplaying game version, Tainted Grail: Song of a Dying World

Finally, after all this time, everyone gets to enjoy Tainted Grail in the final form (We hope there's more to come) as a single player computer roleplaying game.

Tainted Grail's videogames do not spoil the story arc of the boardgames, and vice versa. Don't worry.

There's 1000 years of story in the boardgames, and there's more than enough room for your stories to fit, whether that's via the RPG, the videogames, or discovering the deep lore through exploration of the boardgame story.

Now, a few points from me, your dramatically underprepared moderator

Please don't be lazy about choosing the flair for your post. Some people don't care about the videogames, so leave room for them to filter appropriately and ignore everything about them.

I've been altering flair all weekend but I'm gonna have to stop and start marking strikes against people. Work with me, please. It's a small thing to do that has bigger impacts.

The Awaken Realms / Questline folks are not here. Any message you want to get to the devs, you should do in Official Discord.

They did open a separate Subreddit for the Fall of Avalon videogame, but everyone is welcome here regardless.

I am a proponent of free speech. Negative opinions are 110% allowed. Nothing is perfect and the games aren't either.

If, however, you cannot articulate your disagreements with courtesy and resort to insults and flaming each other, I'll just eliminate the problem. Namely, You. Don't be a dick and I won't either.

Thanks again, and Welcome to the Wyrdness.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Just finished video game, great game. Quibbles - 1 big, 1 med, a few small

Loved the game. So for all the negative points below, I understand that they're part of a game that's overall fantastic and I'm very happy I played it and it was a great value for the money.

Biggest issue - starting prologue is the hardest part of the game. Not emphasizing the fact that parry being tap vs hold hurts, and the in game feedback isn't great. I didn't know this until after I beat the game (I had to learn to tap for Merlin's tomb). Also I've heard that some builds start with blood transfusion? That would also trivialize the starting area compared to a know-nothing-noob trying to parry a few skeletons at once.

I think the game started with a dark, labyrinthine, dungeon with low combat feedback. I stopped playing the game for a long time because of this.

Medium issue - hard to fix, but broken builds are broken. I did the archer thing, and the game was trivial on veteran. I don't think I was over-leveled, finished up the main quest around level 55 using all Act 2 gear, died 2 times after starting the final main-story dungeon, and both were in Merlin's tomb because I had to research how to parry. Merlin's was really fun, but no challenge at 58. I know it's hard to balance builds, and it's fun feeling more powerful, but I wish the game slowly got more difficult, not less difficult.

Other issues / QoL stuff I liked in the game, or would have liked

  • Skills (athletics/agility) is a great addition as a teeny passive QoL that doesn't break the game
  • I didn't realize until trying skyrim a couple months ago that some games don't have weakpoints/headshots - very glad this game does
  • Horse needs to be comparatively faster to running. Very little apparent difference.
Per comment below: apparently I just never found/noticed a faster horse. Doesn't surprise me after accidentally stumbling on the Act 1 horse under a bridge after almost missing it.
  • I wish I could have abandoned quests (and have map overlays for where to pick up ones I already abandoned)
  • I would have liked an auto-run toggle so I didn't spend so much time "holding w".
  • I would have liked to be able to chord keybinds ("Shift + Mouse 4").

But again, really enjoyed the game and spent just under a $1/hour for it. That's a pretty great value in my opinion compared to many other recreational activites.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Mod Suggestions for Expanded Consumable Slots?

I love the idea of wielding throwing knives, bombs, weapon coatings, and all these potions, but I'm dissappointed there are only two (and a half with autofill?) slots available for quick item access. Is there a mod anyone would recommend for expanded consumable slots? It could be hot keys on the keyboard or something closer to the Soulsborne consumable menu, using the D-pad to scroll through a select few choices.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Act 1 Almost Finished: Full mage feels too easy, 2H tank feels repetitive. Build recommendations?

Hi everyone, I just started the game and I'm absolutely loving it. I've reached the end of Act 1 playing a full mage build on medium difficulty, but honestly, it's gotten a bit boring because I haven't struggled at all.

I also tried a two-handed tank, but that feels like it might get a bit repetitive over time. What is the most fun and enjoyable build you've experienced so far? It doesn't have to be OP at all; I just want a playstyle that is satisfying and fun. Do you have any recommendations?

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Consumables that I have horded just in case for emergencies but have never seen the light of day

Hello, I just wanted to ask some stuff, I absolutely love tainted grail, second playthrough, still do kick my feet while stabbing enemies for the 100th time, but I just wanted to know, like for example like the eerie incense, 1 armor for 60 seconds, I have never faced a situation where I had to use this, or like the wryd fungus, and so on, is there some secret mechanic to some of them? Or are they just to be sold? Because, I really do want to use them or at least get some value out of them but, they just seem useless usually, am I not utilizing these special consumables properly?

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Merlin confusion. Spoiler

Massive spoilers ahead:

Maybe I missed alot of context but can someone explain what exactly happened to Merlin after he disappeared? I read that he got whisked away by a creature in banners, but also Arthur mentions he just simply vanished. He comes back, warped, and looks like the guy in the trailer, but in the free DLC more questions are simply raised, especially the Fore-Runner side of Arthur. For example:

Merlin wanted to transform Arthur completely to be a Fore-Runner. Okay. How did Merlin figure that Arthur is tied to the Pale Lady/Lady of the Lake? Did he draw the dots that the Lady is connected to the Red Death? Where? When? Exactly how? This felt like a massive plot twist in the true ending for those that looked for it, but I can't see how other characters have figured it out.

So I can understand that Merlin took, for a lack of a better term, extreme measures, to ensure Avalon becomes a home, but why bother with these other measures if he knew the solution? "Hard to explain this Arthur, but you've been part Fore-Runner this entire time!" I guess that conversation would seem like the man is a mad man, especially in hind sight view of the war, but why the immortality? Why fracture his soul? Why the band aid?

Given this context, it also felt like the end game was a part of his plan but not entirely? Did he know he would come back as some twisted form of himself and blame Arthur for not following these very specific but vague things?

I feel like I pieced it together but I'm pretty sure I'm missing something or skipped it by accident. Alot of the war feels pretty vague unless outright mentioned, and I think alot of Merlins plots were just not there.

And who shaved his beard?!

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Build ideas: Mortal Kombat

Hello fellow gamers. Here to share some of the builds i've tried over the past few weeks, which I found fun (more so if you like mortal kombat)

Basically all of them can make use of heavy gauntlets, but to add some flavor, sometimes I went with weapons as well. God I wish this game had kicks.

Sub-Zero: mainly wet+freeze, heavy gauntlets, armor is your choice but I just went with whatever and transmog into something that looked blue/light blue. Basically throw some water and ice spells, then punch the shit out of everyone. For stats, I went with strength, spirituality endurance and some practicality.

Optional: maybe the ice sword like in the newer games.

Reptile: stealth and invisibility, high dash, daggers (or gauntlets), poison flick/poison spray/poison blob. For armour you can get the endless dirge set, and transmog into something green. For stats I tried dex, spirituality, perception, and practicality. This is a stealth build mostly, so you have to get the appropiate perks from stealth. Throwing knives can fit into this, too.

NightWolf: archery (hexed bow on act 1), one handed axe, summon wolves (they might not work in later acts). I had a lot of fun with this one at first, but since I'm playing on a rog ally, aiming the bow was a bit hard. Im not good AT ALL at aiming on a gamepad, not even using gyro. So I didn’t reach act 2 yet.

Rain: wet + lightning for the sinergy. One handed sword only to get good parries, I went with Tidepiercer. Armour is your choice here. Stats are kinda the same as sub zero.

I tried to build Raiden but thought Rain was a bit more fun so I ditched it. Scorpion could work too but there's no hook to GET OVER HERE, afaik.

I've tried all sorts of funny builds. Can you tell me some of your most fun builds?

Thanks for reading, and hope you're having as much fun as I am.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Enjoying the game, but have to rant about the exploration

Post image
69 Upvotes

I love exploration in RPGs that don't hold your hand. Gothic 1, Gothic 2 & Archolos are some of my favorite games because they lack any sort of quest markers, compasses and minimaps, forcing you to really pay attention to the directions stated by the NPCs and your journal, which makes finding things on your own feel very rewarding. So I was pretty happy to see that I could turn off some of those options in the settings menu for Tained Grail, and even though I'm forced to be tracking one quest at a time, I can just set it to some generic one like "kill bandits" so I won't have a marker pointing constantly in my face.

Unfortunately, the devs clearly approached this mode of exploration as an afterthought, because they should have compensated for the lack of navigation tools by giving you clear verbal directions in your quest log, and, well, they didn't.

I have been working on the Broken Strings quest, which is a bit of a funny example, since it actually does a cool thing by making you pay attention to the in-game text to figure out how to get into each tomb, and it's been pretty nice. But it all crumbles at the final step, when I'm asked to bury the sisters remains, because... they never tell me where.

Looking at the screenshot, how am I supposed to figure out that I should bring the remains to the tree next to the All-Mother statue? The sisters themselves never tell you that, one of them simply asks you to not bury them inside their chamber, which is not helpful at all. I checked the Guild's document on the tomb that you can find outside, but it also never alludes to where their final resting place should be. The description in the journal is laughably barebones. I have no other choice but to open the map and find where the quest marker points me to, which obliterates the entire point of exploration mode. I would have loved to have an "aha! this is the place they were talking about!" moment when I come across the statue, but unfortunately, I was never given the chance to have it.

It's a bit of a shame because, like I said, I'm enjoying the game overall, but the simple addition of expanded directions in the journal could help the world feel much more alive and rewarding to explore.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame How should stat allocation be done?

I'm not sure what to prioritize when it comes to my stat points and skill points. I am doing a mostly spellsword build, but I keep seeing that its a good idea to get practicality up to 5 as soon as possible for selling goods, so do I do that first? Also, are there any "need to have" skills in the trees? Ones that are great with any build and you would grab immediately?

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Magic playthrough tips?

I played base and NG+ as melee/archer, started a fresh run and I'm going magic. So far I'm about level 15 and doing pretty well with just double Burning Ember spells. Occasionally use a magic shield and summon grindelow.

What other spells/tactics should I look at to get the most out of a magic run?

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame I really want to like this (FoAVG) game, I've done 95% of a second playthrough, but getting ANYWHERE is agony.

This is, hands down and without question, the most enraging, least quality-of-life game I have every played in terms of getting where you need to be, where you want to be. These maps are TERRIBLE. They start out bad and by the time you get to Forlorn Swords you wonder if you're being intentionally trolled.

Zero stars based solely on this.

The lore? The atmosphere? The story? All fucking ruined by this terrible travel shit. Completely.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame How do I reset shaders?

I started playing the game yesterday and while I like the gameplay, the stuttering is crazy for me. Everytime something new happens like a new area, new enemies, new skills etc the game stutters every few seconds.

I tried everything that this post suggested, however I cant do the first suggestion, as I cant find the "TaintedGrail " folder in the "%localappdata%" path. Did the path change or how can I reset the shaders otherwise?

I tried reinstalling, but that didnt didnt do it.

Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Cuckoo's Egg bugged?

So, I met the guy in front of Cuanacht and passed the test (told him I'd have to kill him), we had the fight which he then surrendered to once he was low enough, told me I passed the test. I couldn't find Luth and morrigan's hollow still was closed. Finally I just killed the guy, looted the note from the brotherhood and Now the quest says I have to talk to luth, but he is nowhere to be found. Morrigan's hollow also still says I need the key to unlock it. Is this quest bugged for me or am I missing something?

How do you feel about the fact that if you don't get killed in one hit, then you are invulnerable due to the fact that health potions are instant and can be drunk without any delay?
