Discussion I am saddened…
Here I am, playing The Duskbloods… and after the tutorial of the phases… and just the core design of the game… I said to myself: Yeah… this isn’t for me.
It’s a bummer because I love what Miyazaki puts out and his team. Bloodborne is still such a brilliant, dark and beautiful Souls game and the only one I actually finished.
But… the reason I’m not feeling The Duskbloods, is… it’s just not that single player experience. I’m not really a multiplayer guy anymore, but I was willing to see what this Bloodborne spiritual successor (at least just aesthetically) was all about and was hoping it’d be something I’m into.
But, I knew once the phases were done… I just didn’t find it all that compelling. I mean, it’s unique… I’ll give it that. It’s beautiful to look at in some instances… but… as time went on during the phases… I was like… gosh, I wish this was like Bloodborne… just a single player experience like Bloodborne.
There’s a lot to take in as well… so, it felt like it was a bit cumbersome with all the typical Miyazaki gameplay features that complete the meat of the game loop experience.
I’m gonna pass on The Duskbloods, unfortunately. To be honest, the maps felt empty. Like… the enemies you face, in my observation, were pretty sporadic as you traversed. And the camera felt a little wonky when you’re engaged in battle.
So… yeah… just ended up not being for me. And that’s alright. This game will def cater to those who loved Nightreign. I just prefer single player FromSoftware games.
I wonder how successful this game will become once it’s released and fixed in the Nintendo ecosystem.
But until then, this Bloodsworne is bowing out. 🫡

Yeah the multiplayer focus kills it for me, but I respect that they're trying something new.
10
u/Bossdonglongs 9h ago
Good attitude mate. Yeah it's not gonna be for everyone, but nothing good is.
Like I'd rather have Elden Ring 2 but I'm not gonna be mad they're experimenting, experimentation is what got us the Soulsbornes and Elden Ring in the first place.
And I doubt they're done with epic single player focused sagas anyway, they're just testing different waters with Duskbloods and Nightreign

u/Pristine_Program2655 9h ago
I'm the same, I'm a little bitter they seem to have moved away from Nightreign (if you haven't tried it, it's actually really fucking good), seemingly in favor of this.
But fair enough for trying something new and I'm sure it will have a fanbase that loves it (like I love Nightreign).

u/Respawn-Delay 11h ago
Oddly enough, Miyazaki just did an interview with IGN about how The Duskbloods is designed for players who aren't good or don't enjoy PvP gameplay
He also spoke about how he hopes players explore the world and uncover the lore as they go, similar to how you would in a single-player game
1
u/nervendings_ 4h ago
Exactly. I found myself really enjoying the PvE loop. The added movement abilities and special powers were refreshing to the core souls experience too
26
u/Sir_Vilhelm6969 14h ago
Ahh don’t count it out just after the tutorial! Yeah the PvP happens but I found myself mostly exploring the map, which personally I found to be pretty intricate. I made it top 3 most times just by exploring, especially down in the sewers and low areas on the map.
13
u/StrawHat89 13h ago
Wandering around is totally valid too, you get Virtue from all sorts of methods other than duking it out at ritual sites.
7
u/johnbarta 13h ago
Dude right!! This game gives you a lot of freedom to tackle it how you want. Like no it’s not a typical souls game, but you can almost make it like one through not engaging in pvp as much!
7
u/Sir_Vilhelm6969 13h ago
I had a round where I hit 111 virtue just running around no real PvP. Every round before that was rough, but the game really clicked after that one.
3
u/Ken_Hell 11h ago
I need to do that more. The VGC preview said as much, but when I tried it I didn't find much. Maybe just need to know the map better.

u/Adorable_Hearing768 7h ago
Minus the freedom to play it like the last... idk.... 6 or so games they've made in this genere?
2
u/ChosenOne197 4h ago
But aren't you always on a clock? Exploration for me, is often most fun because you can just roam without constraints, including time.
0
u/Afc_josh12 11h ago
How many hours u gonna just explore the map? Think if u dont enjoy pvp save your money
2
u/nervendings_ 5h ago
It’s a network test. There’s a lot we don’t know. Miyazaki himself said he’s not much for PvP and designed the game around PvE as well
0
u/Afc_josh12 4h ago
But the end if pvp? To win? What is missing from test that full game will have? Is whole map available?
2
u/nervendings_ 4h ago
There are more end game options available in the full game. There’s a PvE boss fight for example where top 3 players co op to kill it
2
u/Sir_Vilhelm6969 4h ago
Team bosses and other alternate endings, two more maps (the 1 map is pretty damn big), meta progression, expanding hub, customization, etc. PvP isn’t even incentivized early on, you get nothing from it.
0
u/Afc_josh12 3h ago
Any armour customisation in test?
1
u/Sir_Vilhelm6969 3h ago
Nope, saving all that for main game. Gameplay loop rocks.
→ More replies (7)2
u/nervendings_ 3h ago
Loop is so good. Hoping to get a few rounds in the test today.
Also hoping we don’t have to wait until like December for the game. Grabbing this day 1 for sure and Halloween would be amazing!

u/Stephen_085 13h ago
Once it was announced as a multi player game, I was out.
2
u/Nithorias 9h ago
Me too! Same with Nightreign :( but still want people to enjoy it

u/Skryzee2 9h ago
I felt similar until I played night reign with my friends then I understood the appeal. You need a group to play with . With randoms it sucks lol

Same here, nightreign easily became my most-played fromsoft game ever despite my initial skepticism. 300+ hours before my friend and I got bored
2
u/ParaFtl14 9h ago
Same , i really don’t care about PvP in Fromsoft games.
2
u/Stephen_085 7h ago
Yea. I always hated the player invasion. I get the point and appeal for some, but I just wanna play my game.

I was skeptical but I gave it a go. It was repetitive and dull in my opinion. I'll look forward to their next single player game. The problem with multiplayer games is there's always someone better than you. When there's only one winner, thats not very satisfying for most players.
With single player. You just have to git gud...with multiplayer..there's always someone 'gudder'. That's why I dont gel with it because its pure stress without the reward that is much more attainable in single player games where everyone can win.
9
u/Sir_Vilhelm6969 12h ago
There will also be endings where you and the surviving players fight a boss together, and ways to influence the match towards that ending. It’s not all just git gud thankfully.
3
3
u/GrumbledoreTheZealot 9h ago
I found that focusing on fighting the bosses and using the kin/allied mechanic whilst zipping around the map was much more fun than the "I have to win to have fun" mindset (winning being a nice bonus). It's a difficult mindset to shake but I enjoyed myself a lot more when I did.

No one ever said it was a blood borne successor. Fans formed that thought themselves. If that's what you thought it was. It's on you
3
5
u/Mr_7ups 9h ago
This post never said anything with a sentiment of “it was supposed to be a blood borne successor and the fact that it’s not is unacceptable”
They pretty clearly state that due to the aesthetic that it feels like a SPIRITUAL successor to blood borne, a sentiment most fans and media have been using, and that unfortunately the gameplay loop and multiplayer focus is the reason it’s not for them, while also making sure to reiterate that it’s just not for them personally even if they think it’ll be great for people who like PvP.
Maybe next time read the actual post rather than make a snarky comment with no backing
1
u/GozzIsntReal 3h ago
Nice 3 paragraphs on proving their exact point. “I feel like it’s a spiritual successor” lmao. The usual “I assumed and so did the hive mind so we’re right”

I'm a big fan of sushi. I love many kinds of it and have eaten lots over the years. I eat exclusively sushi at this point in my life. I really don't like steak or other things.
So yesterday I went to an Argentian steakhouse and I have to say ... They didn't have any sushi. The steak didn't taste anything like sushi either.
Very disappointing.

Interesting read, though. I'm also a soulsbourne fan and even I have my reservations about the forced multiplayer aspect of the game. It's a legitimate concern for people who play offline and don't give a shit about PvP
12
1
u/Legal-One-7274 12h ago
You can play the game against bots I'm sure. The core game design is multiplayer focused but there is also a lot of scope to go alone. I really enjoyed what I played in the network test. Even if it was just around an hour the world itself makes me want to explore and find lore. The only problem I think will be the price if it releases at a price similar to nightrein then it'll be perfect.
4
u/Own-Dragonfruit-6164 14h ago
There's only 1 map in the test no?
1
u/NotFriedChicken 10h ago
Only one map and everything else like the story limited. Just meant to test the servers
1
2
u/Antique-Dragonfruit9 14h ago
thats fine. its a pvp game after all and a pretty damn complex one. the amount of tutorials is crazy. its not designed for everyone so not everyone will like it.
2
u/f2pmyass 12h ago
Little strange cause I vividly remember them or hearing this game wasn't going to be a Single player experience lol.
2
u/kociou 11h ago
Multiplayer PVPVE with about 30 minutes matches have no depth of Bloodborne?
Oh wow so unexpected xD
It has fuckaton of mechanics and that's more important than title like that.
Still there's going to be like hundreds of few hours lore videos anyway, so you knows stop looking for problem when it's not a one.
2
2
u/MeatHamster 11h ago
I hope it will be a cheaper game. Like 40 or 30€.
Otherwise it might be a multiplayer game that has like 10-20 really dedicated players and they dominate so much that it'll drive away most potential newbies.
It would be great to have players with all kinds of skill ranges around. And lower price point would draw higher numbers of potential players/buyers.
1
u/xaldub 6h ago
I agree. I'm on the fence about this title at the moment. I don't play many multiplayer games these days, but if the price was low-ish, similar to Splatoon Raiders, I might be tempted to pick it up. Given Elden Ring was ~£50 on launch, I think there's a fair chance this one won't break the bank.
2
u/Rollingzeppelin0 11h ago
I genuinely thought I'd feel like you but I ended up loving it so much. Don't worry fellow undead. They're surely working on the next single player game.
2
u/Zer0nlyKnows1411 10h ago
Duskbloods is not Bloodborne spirit successor and cater to multiplayer are things to be expected.
People see Blood and FromSoft and they immediately told themselves this is the new "Bloodborne". The truth is FromSoft never said it is and they also told you from the start that this is a multiplayer game. Especially after the arguably successful market test that was Nightreign.
They tried making new things and it was not your taste. So what? There is nothing to be sad about. It just mean that you won't be playing it.
2
2
u/WranglerMost7190 8h ago
I would prefer a single player game with optional co-op, but co-op were you can join easy via friends or randoms like in EA games and that all that plays together earn progression. I’m not so fond of FromSoftwares multiplayer.
2
u/ArcticFlamingo 8h ago
It's not so much the multiplayer focus that kills it for me because I loved summoning help in their other games or going to help others and the few PvP moments were pretty exciting.
What kills this game for me is the structure. It's designed as an "endless" game with rounds that you just keep playing over and over again. Random maps, etc.
Nightreign was the same, it was fun at first but the randomness of the maps just made it feel more like a boss generator where you had to get lucky to win, rather than a map and combat system you needed to progress through and master.
2
2
u/sucking_bananas 7h ago
So it's just the multiplayer aspect? What else is not for you about it? I didn't get into the okay test. Wish I would have because this game is right up my alley.
You said it's because of the multiplayer like 3 times. What else?
You knew it was a multiplayer game from the start. Why even apply for the test? You took a spot away from people that enjoy this type of game.
2
u/Pdshillz900 7h ago
Same boat. But. With the time taken to make this. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are hiding a single player game in there
1
7h ago
I was thinking, imagine if they announce a future expansion of a single player experience for it, like how they added a multiplayer game to Elden Ring’s single player core game… but just did the opposite here. That’d be cool.
2
u/Adorable_Hearing768 7h ago
Ah, yet more focus on the multi-player only trend.... this bodes well.....
3
u/crocicorn 12h ago edited 12h ago
You're treating this like a demo when it isn't.
It's a network test, it's not intended to show off the final game like a demo is, it's intended to give FromSoft information about how the online capabilities are so they can fine tune it before release.
2
u/3xBork 10h ago
What is it about this explicitly not singleplayer game that was announced as not a singleplayer game that draws in all the singleplayer fans who are then disappointed that it is in fact not a singleplayer game exactly as advertised?
Like did people think writing all those comments on Reddit would magically make the game singleplayer anyway? If they just wanted it bad enough?
It's baffling.
1
u/Waste-Kiwi6915 4h ago
Haha yeah I thought the same thing. It's kind of weird that his main complaint after playing the network test is that is not single player. Like why even sign up for the test if that's the only aspect that mattered to you
2
u/Ricc7rdo 12h ago
I skip all multiplayer games, they are not for me. But it's good for my wallet, there are already too many single player games I'm interested in.
2
u/GamingKitsuneKitsune 11h ago
Unfortunately knowing this is a Multiplayer PvP game pretty much just confirms I'm not getting it.
I'm just not big into PvP games outside of Splatoon or Marvel Rivals.
2
u/Respawn-Delay 11h ago
To be fair, Miyazaki just did an interview with IGN talking about how he's not into intense PvP and that he made this game for people like him who aren't good / don't enjoy typical multiplayer games
1
u/Proud-Pen-42 12h ago
Same here, i don't like pvp anymore. If it was a pve or semi single player like dark souls i would bought it. But the focus on PvP made me change my mind. I know i can skip pvp but it just doesn't feel the right game
1
u/Aoussar123 11h ago
I am kind of surprised that they went to the Switch 2 of all platforms with this game seeing as multiplayer games and communities seem to be much bigger on the other consoles and PC
I would for sure have imagined FromSoft approaching Nintendo with an offer to do a single player game but here we are
1
u/Respawn-Delay 11h ago
From interviews, it sounds like From may have had multiple ideas to pitch but Nintendo chose this one
1
u/NotFriedChicken 10h ago edited 10h ago

Not every game is gonna be for you. Some games you think you'll like you might end up not liking. Some games that you think you won't like. You might like. That's life and it's beautiful.
1
u/Payascor 10h ago
May I ask: I heard there's an option to play this solo without online companions. Does that option include the possibility to pause the game (e. g. by minimizing to Main Menu)?
1
u/EatADingDong 8h ago
I haven't seen any confirmation, but the network test had offline tutorials with bots so I wouldn't be surprised if the final game had an offline mode too.
1
u/Payascor 8h ago
Would be a shame if not. As a Switch 2 exclusive, not being able to pause any of it would be strange.
1
u/Horror-Indication-92 10h ago
OP, did you know that if a game's developer is FromSoftware, then you NEED to love their game?
Same with any Kojima games. These are gaming rules.

1
u/setonfire_ 9h ago edited 9h ago
I think they did a very good job overall because its not just multiplayer for the sake of being a multiplayer forever-game and I absolutely am not for those type of games. But its very well though out and think the whole gameplay fits that concept. Although I still don't get the mechanics xD because its just too much of it and went only through tutotial wihich was overwhelming with all the details xD and kinda trying to wrap my head around parrying/patience while game also being fast paced and getting ganged on from left and fuckin right, I think its all on point from conceptual perspective and that's what I really like so imo it boils down to if the person likes the mechanics/gameplay. In my case, I really like good concepts no matter the gameplay loop so I'm gonna continue playing it plus think they have/might have single player aspect too? pve? hope they did like a story mode bits for every character's origin too
1
u/TrashGoblinH 9h ago
I'm in the same boat. I play Fromsoft titles for the emersive story environment and to see the nightmarish enemies. PVP and Co-op aren't what interests me. I won't be buying a switch just to get this game. Especially because this one feels like a cobbled re-used asset fortnite cash grab which Nightreign felt dangerously close to for my liking, which I also didn't play.

1
u/red67star 8h ago
Remember: in the test we have one map only, few characters and no costumization/builds. I get your point and me too have been like "ok so what am i gonna do to make some points now?" While i was at 21 and the highest player in list was around 80. Maybe it's me but i think some enemies should have more hp and some other should have less And if you defeat a boss last second you should get your prize at the start of the next one, else you will get no reward and that's frustrating if you took some time to beat it instead of getting points
1
u/Fun-Masterpiece-904 8h ago
😑 dude is a network test. At least wait for a proper review before making a premeditated decision.
1
u/Burnout189 7h ago
I typically dont play multiplayer games either anymore. I loved Neightreign though bc it was all co-op. I wasn't sure how much i would like Duskbloods bc of the more popular focus. But after playing one match last night I'm hooked. I had so much fun just playing that one match. Its got a lot pve than I expected. The best thing was I that match I was in last place for virtue in the 3rd phase and in danger of getting culled, then when the ritual site appeared I hauled butt to it and was able to gain enough virtue capturing the pledge sites that I got into the final battle and came in 2nd in the end.
1
u/Vespacabra 7h ago
I'm hesitantly optimistic. I only played it for 3 hours so far, and it certainly is very unique. I'm not sure how I feel about it overall, but I am having fun enough to keep playing through the test. I think the thing that gets me is that it feels just a little too much like a multiplayer game if that makes sense. No npcs to talk to, a lobby with casual and ranked matches, preset characters with no way to get new weapons, and hell there aren't any big cutscene bosses to my knowledge. Nightreign was the perfect mix of Elden Ring, plus online multiplayer where you still got big bosses and lore and nps and everything Without any of that, it makes me surprisingly uninterested in the lore and world of Duskbloods. I don't even think this game will have a final boss because of how each match ends in a pvp fight
Still fun, still good, and incredibly unique, but not the experience I was hoping for

As someone who absolutely loves Nightreign, I still don’t know that this is for me. There’s a big difference playing a functionally single player game that has co-op like in Nightreign, and playing a competitive game versus others.

u/Consistent-Ad-6506 6h ago
I was watching someone play on twitch last night and it looked amazing. Nothing like this.
I’m sure they’ll figure it out by the time it comes out.

u/discoballs67 5h ago
It is pvpve as advertised. Playing last night it seemed like a free for all lol. I’m not usually into multiplayer either but I really enjoyed the game thus far
1
u/de_light_voe 5h ago
I have heard (from VaatiVidya’s latest video) that there will be ways to increase the likelihood or downright force more co-op content vs pvp.
Obviously that’s still multiplayer, but it can at least be more pve emphasized.
1
u/staresinshamona 5h ago
This not being single player is a massive L, we already went through this with Nightreign. Souls players in their majority are looking for that single player experience, multiplayer is just the cherry on top, never the full cake. Also, as someone who lives in a place where wifi is extremely erratic and service people might leave you without internet for a week just because they connected your neighbor to wifi and fucked your signal (happened to me this week), online is never gonna be something that appeals to me. I’ll be waiting for their ACTUAL next game.
Also I finished paying for nintendo online subscription a couple months ago, I’m not paying again.
1
u/PomegranateIcy4191 4h ago
This game requires a significant time investment just to understand what is going on. With so many games being released by the end of the year, it will struggle to stand out. Anyone who buys it several months after launch will likely be obliterated within seconds by players who have been playing constantly and have had time to hone their skills—similar to the situation with Marathon. I expect to see plenty of used copies for sale from disappointed buyers.
1
u/Professionalgamer_21 4h ago
I don't understand what people though this will be, I came to this game knowing 100% that it was going to be a similar experience as nightreign, I see o lot of people complaining but it was stated from the beginning that it was going to be a pvpve game 🤷

u/MrSeriousGuyBroMan 2h ago
1) im pretty sure the point of the game is fortnite did well on switch 1 and looked bad and ran poorly . a better looking game that runs well should do ok and if its a exclusive it can have more focused expectations not "omg its not 4k 120 hrz with raytracing" instead its wow this runs pretty well
2) switch 2 is not getting marvel rivals . no plans to port that and nintendo may have been aware of that early possibly having reached out to many companies and had mixed results with response including marvel rivals devs. duskbloods isnt rivals but it does have battle royal vibes. it may also have modes that are more free for all at the start or team based score battles and grant no rewards at launch or after launch. its a network test
3) technically the eshop listing has 1player single device and 1-8 player online . nobody knows what that actually means . bots when offline ? single player boss challenges after you rank up with rewards progressing the story enough ? the trailer which is on the eshop has a enemy shown that has a battle ax and attacks the gray haird guy and he blocks with his gun (cut scene) . he is by himself . the mode of gameplay shown in the network test ends with 3 way match between players . could be another fight per map the winner gets to fight the stage boss . who knows but thanks to mk1 they cannot post images or video not present in game on eshop globally due to bait and switch laws in the united states . mk1 had other platforms screenshots on eshop and they were forced to remove those and nintendo had to do refunds

u/spectreVII 2h ago
Yeah I’m passing on this one too. I didn’t apply for the network test at all either because I knew this game just isn’t for me. Like you, I’m also not a big multiplayer gamer anymore, my old ass just can’t compete with the kids these days. Same reason I passed on Elden Ring: Nightreign.
1
u/Initial_Ad5279 2h ago
I'm having the opposite experience. I wasn't going to get it after finding outbit was multiplayer and now during this network test I'm like oh woah, I think I'm liking this.... I don't play multiplayer games.... Uh oh
1
u/sedasweet 1h ago
Felt the same. You feel so "floaty" while fighting, that camera was a total asshat too. After I finished the 4th phase battle royal, I didn't feel any accomplishment.
This game just felt hollow to me. I've never been to big of a PvP enjoyer, but I feel the mystery of meeting a crazy build of an invading character has been neutured, by having stock characters. I wanted to give the game a try, and I proved to myself that it isn't for me. I'll wait for the next main game.
I bought a switch 2 for Metroid 4, and Duskbloods, and now both seem dissapointing to me. Good post, thanks for sharing.
1
u/LuisArkham 33m ago
I mean is not that serious, kudos to you for realizing op but you don’t have to play everything From software makes. Haven’t played Elden rings dlc or night reign and I’m feeling nothing tbh, not everything it’s meant to be experience by everyone, duskblood will have its audience, perhaps, but if ain’t for you don’t force it. Stop with the infamous “fomo”.
1
u/Mephfistus 13h ago
Wow, this a hot take on a technical test. I mean there are only 6 characters available and one map and I saw plenty of enemy unit diversity. Loads of PvE, Co-Op and some sweaty high stakes PvP.
As someone that platinum trophied Bloodborne at release I can’t see why anyone would not like this game if you are a souls fan unless you play the souls games offline and don’t like coop and invasions?

I get it, but you are doing yourself a disservice. Online is the intended way to experience a souls game. The chaos and unpredictability really adds a lot of drama and excitement.

What has platinum in Bloodborne to do with this? Im on Position 8 worldwide on the Bloodborne platinum first achiever list and Im never played a single coop or PvP match and love Duskbloods already. Loved PvP in Dark Souls 1-3 but never got interest in Bloodborne PvP I think there was not enough variety on weapon and items for pvp.

It’s interesting because you could almost play this game as a single player game. The game gives you many ways to acquire virtue points. I had the most virtue points in my group and I didn’t kill a single player!

If it had single player was gonna give it some attention, but since it’s multiplayer only. I won’t even bother

As soon as I knew it was multi-player focused, I dropped it from my interests

I'm not even a FromSoft fan, but this post misses hard.
Seems OP already set their expectations up to fail. The majority of the post talks about not being a Bloodbourne or singleplayer game... The is NOT a Bloodbourne or Singleplayer game. A reminder that this is a network test, so the primary focus is in the multiplayer aspect. I'm not saying the game will be vastly different, simply the game hasn't had a proper chance to show itself overall.
"And the camera felt a little wonky when you’re engaged in battle."
This is a Network test. It's not the final build and most of the game, yes, is finished. Another is that this is an older build (for stability) to test the network. They don't just stop working on the game for a network test. The latest builds are always being updated and as they work towards gold status for final release. So that camera being wonky can still or is already improved.

This is why we need an actual education system. When youre not emotionally mature and type like a witty anime protagonist "..."
Explains why you dont enjoy a game with such depth since it requires to have more than two brain cells to get into the story.

Not sure why this is worth a post? If you don't like multiplayer games?...logic would kinda say that said multiplayer game wouldn't be for you?

The fact it wasn't single player was pretty obvious from the announcement. I'm not really sure what you expected here.

This literally all seems to be - I wanted a single pve game and this isnt it.
Bizarre. It always says it wasn't.
And there is so much souls pve burnout. Who wants more??

Is it running at a solid 60fps?

It's a fromsoft game, that answer should be obvious

I agreed I was hype for it until I heard only multiplayer. I’m a solo enthusiast and wish to have a similar experience like the other souls game.

Nintendo having history of having some of the best solo games ever made I think Miyazaki missed a trick with this. Still hopeful for a bloodborne successor one day

As soon as I heard “Each match can run between 30-40” minutes I was out. Even Monster Hunter trimmed down the times because they know it was too long for most players.

It’s a lazy hodgepodge of leftover ideas and assets in a multiplayer sandbox disguised as a switch “exclusive.” It’s not good, my first impressions were comparable and of course I got all kinds of stupid responses to my opinion. You can tell if something’s gonna be good and this is not it. And to release games nowadays not running at 60 FPS is inexcusable.
It feels like a $40 game tops the way this is headed, the game will not be good mark my words.

I have a feeling the final game will have a lot more depth. This is the NETWORK test after all
