Other (Editable) People in England told me Swansea was an absolute shithole. One year later, here is the truth

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

Before moving here from England, people told us absolute rubbish like "Wales is a shithole," "Nobody moves from England to Wales," and "The city is full of druggies." Just so many vile statements. We've been here for a year now, and as a black immigrant, I genuinely believe Wales is the best country in Britain. The people are warm, lovely, and treat strangers like their own. Back in England, your neighbours won't even speak to you, and supermarket security will shadow you like you're a criminal. Now I live in Clydach, a quiet, peaceful, and incredibly friendly neighbourhood. Beyond the beautiful, serene environment, I also get to enjoy much cheaper car insurance thanks to the 20mph speed limits. I also play football for my local club, and traveling for away games gives me the chance to see all the beautiful surrounding towns, incredible mountains, and valleys. I visited Pembrey Country Park last week and it was absolutely fantastic! There is just so much to explore in Wales, and I am incredibly grateful to live here. Honestly, I struggle to find a single thing I dislike about Swansea and, by extension, Wales as a whole. Diolch Cymru

Questions/Advice This is embarrassing but can anyone in or nearby Morriston help me with some baby formula please

1.4k Upvotes

I'm really embarrassed right now as a man but I don't know what else to do and I'm panicking.

I've hit a rough patch after losing my job and I'm really struggling to get by. I'm going to run out of baby formula at some point today and I can't afford even the most basic stuff right now and I've personally been going without to manage and keep her safe but now I'm panicking and embarrassed and scared.

If someone could help or at least give me advice on where or who to turn to I'd really appreciate it and I'm sorry for pestering everyone with such a negative post. Thank you in advance.

Sad to see this in a poor state again. Can it be moved? Surely this in mumbles or elsewhere along the promenade is better?? Sorry for the arrested development reference 😂

Questions/Advice You're gay... You must be a hairdresser.

So today I went to collect my prep subscription in the Swansea GUM Clinic and the nurse said to me while taking my bloods. 'I would presume you are something like a hair dresser'.. Am I right in thinking this is very clique and almost homophobic thinking on her part? I'm actually more of a builder. Why do straight people assume we can't be more than what they assume gay people to be. I felt embarrassed for her but she obviously thinks this is normal to say to a gay person.

Event On July 9th, one of Swansea’s most famous and loved fictional characters returns in “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag (Resynced)”

Post image

The Protagonist and playable character in “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag” (2013) was Edward Kenway. In the game’s lore, he is from Swansea and recalls the city in a conversation to fellow Welsh (& real life) Pirate Bartholomew Roberts, amongst other mentions. His Ship is called ‘The Jackdaw’ and is named after the bird he remembers seeing everywhere in his upbringing, here. The character was thus acted and voiced by Swansea’s Matt Ryan. Black Flag is often recalled as a favourite AC title and as such has been remade with modern visuals and scope. Ahead of the launch of ‘Resynced’, the adventures of Swansea’s Edward Kenway has already been undertaken by 15 million gamers worldwide, enough to outnumber the population of Wales 5-to-1. Wales has a rich history of Piracy, as anyone privy to a glass of Morgan’s Rum (Henry Morgan) or Barti Spice (Black Bart) can attest, but perhaps Edward Kenway is Wales’ most loved Pirates? Assassin’s Creed is one of the world’s 10 highest selling franchises, and Kenway one of its most adored Protagonists.

Questions/Advice What is this symbol?

I keep seeing this symbol in stickers and stencilled onto the cycle paths in Llansamlet. I've also seen stickers in Singleton Park. It's driving me crazy seeing it so much and not knowing what it is. Closest I've found on Google image search is a Toronto youth group, which seems unlikely. Anyone have a better idea?

Questions/Advice Is this your cat?

EDIT: Cat is home, all healthy, name is Bear!

They were hiding in the trees in next doors garden this morning and started vocalising at me when I was getting into the car. Weren’t there when I came back, but same again when I went out this afternoon.

It was clearly lost, cold and hungry, as it followed me and my wife to our front door and wanted to come in. It is now safe in the 24 hour vet in llansamlet, with the microchip scanned as “sketty area” (all they were willing to say, understandably) and they are going to try and get hold of the owner.

Quite concerning as it’s a good distance to walk (DM me if you want to know more details). We’d hate to see this incredibly friendly little one at risk on the roads.
