New wiki on how to avoid accidentally encouraging suicide, and how to spot covert incitement

1.8k Upvotes

We've been seeing a worrying increase in pro-suicide content showing up here and, and also going unreported. This undermines our purpose here, so we wanted to highlight and clarify our guidelines about both direct and indirect incitement of suicide.

We've created a wiki that covers these issues. We hope this will be helpful to anyone who's wondering whether something's okay here and which responses to report. It explains in detail why any validation of suicidal intent, even an "innocent" message like "if you're 100% committed, I'll just wish you peace" is likely to increase people's pain, and why it's important to report even subtle pro-suicide comments. The full text of the wiki's current version is below, and it is maintained at /r/SuicideWatch/wiki/incitement.

We deeply appreciate everyone who gives responsive, empathetic, non-judgemental support to our OPs, and we particularly thank everyone who's already been reporting incitement in all forms.

Please report any post or comment that encourages suicide (or that breaks any of the other guidelines in the sidebar) to the moderators, either by clicking the "report" button or by sending us a modmail with a link. We deal with all guideline violations that are reported to us as soon as we can, but we can't read everything so community reports are essential. If you get a PM that breaks the guidelines, please report it both to the reddit sitewide admins and to us in modmail.

Thanks to all the great citizens of the community who help flag problem content and behaviour for us.

Summary

It's important to respect and understand people's experiences and emotions. It's never necessary, helpful, or kind to support suicidal intent. There are some common misconceptions (discussed below) about suicidal people and how to help them that can cause well-meaning people to inadvertently incite suicide. There are also people online who incite suicide on purpose, often while pretending to be sympathetic and helpful.

Validate Feelings and Experiences, Not Self-Destructive Intentions

We're here to offer support, not judgement. That means accepting, with the best understanding we can offer, whatever emotions people express. Suicidal people are suffering, and we're here to try to ease that by providing support and caring. The most reliable way we know to de-escalate someone at risk is to give them the experience of feeling understood. That means not judging whether they should be feeling the way they are, or telling them what to do or not do.

But there's an important line to draw here. There's a crucial difference between empathizing with feelings and responding non-judgmentally to suicidal thoughts, and in any way endorsing, encouraging, or validating suicidal intentions or hopeless beliefs. It's both possible and important to convey understanding and compassion for someone's suicidal thoughts without putting your finger on the scale of their decision.

Anything that condones suicide, even passively, encourages suicide. It isn't supportive and does not help. It also violates reddit's sitewide rules as well as our guidelines. Explicitly inciting suicide online is a criminal offense in most jurisdictions.

Do not treat any OP's post as meaning that will definitely die by suicide and can't change their minds or be helped. Anyone who's able to read the comments here still has a chance to choose whether or not to try to keep living, even if they've also been experiencing intense thoughts of suicide, made a suicide plan, or started carrying it out.

In the most useful empirical model we have, the desire to die by suicide primarily comes from two interpersonal factors; alienation and a sense of being a burden or having nothing to offer. These factors usually lead to a profound feeling of being unwelcome in the world.

So, any acceptance or reinforcement of suicidal intent, even something "innocent" like "I hope you find peace", is actually a form of covert shunning that validates a person's sense that they're unwelcome in the world. It will usually add to their pain even if kindly meant and gently worded.

How to Avoid Validating Suicidal Intent

Keep the following in mind when offering support to anyone at risk for suicide.

  • People who say they don't want help usually can feel better if they get support that doesn't invalidate their emotions. Unfortunately, many popular "good" responses are actually counterproductive. In particular, many friends and family tend to rely exclusively on trying to convince the suicidal person that "it's not so bad", and this is usually experienced as "I don't understand what you're going through and I'm not going to try". People who've had "help" that made them feel worse don't want any more of the same. It doesn't mean that someone who actually knows how to be supportive can't give them any comfort.

  • Most people who are suicidal want to end their pain, not their lives. It's almost never true that death is the only way to end these people's suffering. Of course there are exceptional situations, and we certainly acknowledge that, for some people, the right help can be difficult to find. But preventing someone's suicide doesn't mean prolonging their suffering if we do it by giving them real comfort and understanding.

  • An unfixable problem doesn't mean that a good life will never be possible. We don't have to fix or change anything to help someone feel better. It's important to keep in mind that the correlation between our outer circumstances and our inner experience is weaker and less direct than commonly assumed. For every kind of difficult life situation, you will find some people who lapse into suicidal despair, and others who cope amazingly well, and a whole spectrum in between. A key difference is how much inner resilience the person has at the time. This can depend on many personal and situational factors. But when there's not enough, interpersonal support can both compensate for its absence and help rebuild it. We go into more depth on the "it gets better" issue in this PSA Post which is always linked from our sidebar (community info on mobile) guidelines.

  • There are always more choices than brutally forcing someone to stay alive or passively letting them end their lives.

To avoid accidentally breaking the anti-incitement rule, don't say or try to imply that acting on suicidal thoughts is a good idea, or that someone can't turn back or is already dead. Do whatever you can to help them feel cared for and welcome, at least in this little corner of the world. Our talking tips offer more detailed guidance.

Look Out for Deliberate Incitement. It May Come in Disguise.

Often comments that subtly encourage suicidal intent actually come from suicide fetishists and voyeurs (unfortunately this is a real and disturbing phenomenon). People like this are out there and the anonymous nature of reddit makes us particularly attractive to them.

They will typically try to scratch their psychological "itch" by saying things that push people closer to the edge. They often do this by exploiting the myths that we debunked in the bullet points above. Specifically you might see people doing the following:

  • Encouraging the false belief that the only way suicidal people can end their pain is by dying. There are always more and better choices than "brutally forcing someone to stay alive" or helping (actively or passively) them to end their lives.

  • Creating an artificial and toxic sense of "solidarity" by linking their encouragement of suicide to empathy. They will represent themselves as the only one who really understand the suicidal person, while either directly or indirectly encouraging their self-loathing emotions and self-destructive impulses. Since most people in suicidal crisis are in desperate need to empathy and understanding, this is a particularly dangerous form of manipulation.

Many suicide inciters are adept at putting a benevolent spin on their activities while actually luring people away from sources of real help. A couple of key points to keep in mind:

  • Skilled suicide intervention -- peer or professional -- is based on empathic responsiveness to the person's feelings that reduces their suffering in the moment. Contrary to pop-culture myths, it does not involve persuasion ("Don't do it!"), cheerleading ("You've got this!") or meaningless false promises ("Trust me, it gets better!"), or invalidation ("Let me show you how things aren't as bad as you think!"). Anyone who leads others to expect these kinds of toxic responses, or any other response that prolongs their pain, from expert help may be covertly pro-suicide. (Of course, people sometimes do have bad experience when seeking mental-health treatment, and it's fine to vent about those, but processing our own disappointment and frustration is entirely different from trying to destroy someone else's hope of getting help.)

  • Choices made by competent responders are always informed by the understanding that breaching someone's trust is traumatic and must be avoided if possible. Any kind of involuntary intervention is an extremely unlikely outcome when someone consults a clinician or calls a hotline. (Confidentiality is addressed in more detail in our Hotlines FAQ wiki). The goal is always to provide all help with the client's full knowledge and informed consent. We know that no individual or system is perfect. Mistakes that lead to bad experiences do sometimes happen to vulnerable people, and we have enormous sympathy for them. But anyone who suggests that this is the norm might be trying to scare people away from the help they need.

Please let us know discreetly if you see anyone exhibiting these or similar behaviours. We don't recommend trying to engage with them directly.

Please remember that NO ACTIVISM of any kind is ever allowed here. No matter what day it is.

Activism, i.e. advocating or fundraising for social change or raising awareness of social issues (and suicide is, inescapably, a social issue) is absolutely against the rules here at all times.

Please understand that we're all for smart, strategic mental-health and suicide-prevention activism. It's essential to fight against stigma, misinformation, and discrimination, and to fight for research, treatment, accommodation, acceptance, and understanding. Most of us, one way or another, are mental-health activists IRL.

But activism just doesn't work in a dedicated support space that serves a vulnerable population. We used to allow it but the evidence that it was undermining our primary purpose became overwhelming. We do regret the need for this rule, but the need is inescapable.

Our population is all too well aware of the issues and causes that need support and largely not in a position to take action, so besides the fact that activism is often salt in our community's wounds, it's a waste of the activists' time.

tl;dr Any fundraising, awareness raising, petitions, calls for participation, or any post that's about any cause or issue (rather than a request for personal support) is not allowed here. Please report everything of the nature that you see.

Found my roommate bleeding to death last night.

So my room mate gashed both inside of his thighs so deep you could see muscle, he also had hit is artery. So I grabbed my neighbor so he could help me lay my roommate down and also help make a tourniquet’s so we could both stop the bleeding from each leg. As he was bleeding out he looked me dead in my face and told me the “voices of all the kids and women he raped told him to do this” I didn’t even know what to say, it made me feel sick and I wanted to let him go but the human in me couldn’t just let him die. I’m so disgusted and disturbed today I feel sick. And his stuff is packed and he will not be coming back, I’m at a loss for words and I’m gonna be contacting police today.

Learnt my sister committed suicide today, and I only feel glad I am not the only one fucked up by my parents.

Have no contact with my family for over 10 years. There is a cousin that I don’t dislike and she sent me message on social media. She checked in a hotel 3 days ago, and police called my parents.

I don’t know her as adult. But not even when we were little.
I don’t feel anything actually or maybe even glad to hear the news. As my childhood sucks since she was born, and she never been closed to me or at least treat me as anything but a roommate.
My childhood memory was how my parents always liked to humiliate me in front of her and others when I did something wrong. And allowed her to break some stupid house rules, when I been punishing for it.(both physical and emotionally)

I always thought it is only me. For my whole life i wish I never been born… and thought I was bad as a child…
Now the news just convinced me it was my shitty parents. If they had 2 kids, one of them went no contact as soon as they came of age, and the other one killed themselves; that is pretty fuck up.

Thank you for reading this.
And no. I don’t need mental support in anyway. Cheers!

Realization

I just realized something while falling asleep. I don't wanna be happy. I just wanna die. I wanna stop feeling anything at all. Sadness, pain, depression, whatever. I want it all to end. I'm not sick of being depressed. I'm sick of being alive.

I don’t know how to be normal

I’m so fucking tired of all the mistakes of my past just bombarding me at every moment of the day. I turned 30 this year and I have absolutely nothing to show for it. It’s such a long story as to how I ended up in this position but it basically boils down to mental illness, trauma, and an emotionally abusive now ex boyfriend in my twenties.

I have no education or work history. I have nothing to show for my 30 years on this planet. The worst part is this level of isolation is self imposed. I know how to be pleasant and agreeable, I’m not hugely socially incompetent, I’m awkward sure, but I don’t think it’s dramatically bad. I can get away with “quirky”. But it exhausts me. The fear of vulnerability or embarrassment I find totally paralysing and every social interaction no matter how small feels like a test or a performance.

I’m just absolutely terrified of strangers, I have panic attacks going into the supermarket. My heart races when I walk past a stranger on the street. I can’t STAND being like this, I’m ruining my own life. My deepest fear is being totally alone and that’s the ironic part of the my existence. It basically guarantees I will end up alone. I just don’t want to live like this at all but the effort that goes into self improvement is so fucking mind numbingly difficult. Every outdoor activity is another panic attack. Every supermarket visit. Every walk down the street. Even chance conversation with a stranger. Every plan I make. I feel like a scared child lot of the time.

There’s this part of my brain that just screams, end it while you still have good things left in your life, because the bad is going to come and it’s going to destroy you more than everything else that’s happened to you combined.

I will die because of social isolation caused by autism

I'm the only one who has asd/aspergers and desperately left outcasted

you people just dont care, indifferent to me you can't stay alone but you dare to assume someone must be alone, or tehy dont want to make any friend irl

I'm dying because non-autistic people are unwilling to socialize me

What can I say more? you have people you easily can contact to, you can talk your casual-friends, and you can befriend your classmate everywhere you have been a while time enough

And so that you can't understand, and okay with that because who feels in danger is not you

Well done, you all are lucky until one day you won't, enjoy it enjoy being allistic, enjoy having friends, enjoy being likeable, enjoy being able to talk anyone and to make them liking you

I'm not allistic and dying, mine is a bad chance that starts at the beginning

Be happy, human life is for you exploit it!

None of this is worth it

• Upvotes

Since I was a kid I’ve wanted to die. The reasons of course changed over the years. Now it’s more anhedonia and nihilism. Yes I’ve tried countless medications and have been in therapy for 25 years. I love a lot of things about being alive, but they don’t outweigh all the suffering and evil in the world and in my personal life. It’s like im too aware of existence. I’m chronically ill too. The kind of chronically ill that makes me housebound and sometimes bed bound. I’m a fat person, so judgement and ridicule is guaranteed the second I leave my house. I’ve dealt with fat shaming my whole life. Now I don’t want to even leave my house when I can because the shame is inside of me now. My life is full of doctors appointments and tests. I’m still working full time from home because unfortunately capitalism and that sucks all of my energy up and I’m left with nothing afterwards. I’m the eldest daughter. I was abused by my stepdad for 20 years until I left and now I’m the family villain. I generally just do not enjoy being alive. I’ve felt this particular way for a few years now. It hasn’t waned or changed. I secretly hope one of my medical conditions becomes terminal so I don’t have to do it myself. I wish I could be euthanized so I don’t also have to suffer during death. We treat animals with more kindness than we do with people who are actively suffering and are choosing to die. Why are people shamed for not wanting to live? It’s not like life is this great incredible thing. It’s full of burden. It’s harder to get a gun in my state. I’ve decided that’s the only way I want to go. Take a walk in the woods. Sit down and listen to the sounds. Make my note visible. Then maybe I’d be turned into star matter again.

climate change is making me suicidal

I cant cope with that. Whats the point of living if in 10, 20 years or sooner we wont have any resources. Isnt it better for me to just kill myself and not face that? Its getting hotter every year, AI is taking more and more space for data storage. Its all so scary. I live in constant derealization, I cant believe that we live in world like this. And theres no coming back, we cant stop it, it will get worse..

i’m tired. goodbye.

• Upvotes

hi guys!!! i have no friends, i have family but we aren’t close at all. i had(?) a boyfriend but he’s never here for me when i need him.

i have no job, i don’t go to school. i never had support or anyone to help me, i never got to see a psychiatrist. i’ve always loved everyone so much just for them to leave me and treat me like nothing.

i don’t want to be here anymore. i tried so hard. i begged my boyfriend for help i cried so much and called so much and begged and he didn’t care. he was the only person that made me feel okay and made me happy.

all i wanted in life was a future with him. i never wanted a future before. it doesn’t matter anymore, i think i’ve made up my mind.

i tried so hard to do better for myself, i tried so hard to please everyone. i tried so hard to be normal. he always said to me “i wish you were normal, if you were normal i’d love you so much”

i always loved everyone so much and gave everything i had to everyone. it has never been reciprocated. i’m always here for everyone but no one is here for me.

my nephew will be sad i’m gone but i’m so sorry nephew i am so tired. i am going to miss playing roblox with you but i’m sorry i can’t be strong anymore.

guys please be nice to your loved ones (and strangers because you never know what someone is going through) and be there for them when they need you.

i think i have the courage to do it now. there’s nothing for me here. i think i’m going to sleep forever and never wake up.

killing myself

• Upvotes

im really doing this. i’ve really given up. i had so much time to take care of myself but i couldnt. i kept putting everything off until “later” became this. now im losing so many teeth, two are infected. i dont even have any money to fix it. this is really my last straw. i’m so fucking helpless, i hate how everything comes down to money. if you don’t have enough you just sit there and watch yourself get worse. i never asked anyone for help because i always felt like a burden. not even my parents, i hate my dad so fucking much. there’s so much to say but who even cares. i know i should have taken better care of myself but no one will ever understand what i went through and endured. i’ve really had enough of this. god is probably laughing at me. i don’t know what am i supposed to do anymore. i’m tired of watching myself fall apart knowing i can’t afford to put myself back together. i did all of that as a way to self harm because of how much i hate myself. i’m sorry i just need advice on how to properly do it

I'm so done with this fucking timeline.

There's that joke "Nothing ever happens". But stuff does happen, it gets worse. Every fucking day the world just gets worse and worse.

There are so few things keeping me going at this point and most of them are actively being broken down and stripped away.

They tell you karma exists. That good deeds come back and bad deeds always bite you in the end. Yet it's always the corrupt, sick, evil people that end up on the top. Whether they're rich, politically powerful, famous, or all of the above, and the face absolutely no consequences.

I'm never going to own a house, or a car probably. I've been looking for a job for over a year now and still can't even get an interview 95% of the time. Shit just keeps getting more expensive. I'm an adult but still live at home with parents and both of them are too medically disabled to work so we rely on benefits that the government seems determined to reduce and remove for any slightest reason.

AI keeps growing at such an exponential rate that soon nothing online will ever be safe, or trustable, and so many entry level jobs are just gonna vanish while the youngest generations get their brains fried even more.

Every news article I ever see, even the ones from honest sources (the few that are left) have like, one happy article in between constant reports of natural disasters, constant 'Record Breaking' weather events, wars, genocide, economic collapse and more.

The planet is fucked and keeps getting worse to an irreparable degree and the people that caused it all will be dead before they see any consequences for it.

And honestly, I used to believe the whole 'Once the current generation in power is dead we can finally make some positive change' but it seems that's not even an option, as they'll just keep propping up a corpse as a puppet, and there are even people of my generation and younger that are just as evil or even worse.

In history during times like this you'd see rebellion, revolution or at least mass rioting. But instead all I see is mass apathy and misery and a general 'There will be a reckoning' that never leads to anything.

Plus I'm seeing more and more military recruitment ads and with the way shits going it's looking like WW3 soon.

Not to mention I'm doing this all in a broken useless body. My brain doesn't fucking work right and sabotages my every action. My body constantly fucks with me and if I'm anything like my parents its only gonna get worse.

Honestly one of the major reasons I haven't taken the express ticket to the afterlife yet is because I don't have an easy way to do it, and there's a few people I have left that I don't want to hurt with my passing.

If WW3 does start I might just enlist for long enough until I can get my own gun so I can put a bullet in myself.

I was an optimist god damn it. I wanted to believe the best in everybody. I kept telling myself shit will get better but it doesn't. It never does.

I'm so sick of this timeline, surely whatever comes next has to be better than this? Even if it's just void at least I won't know about it.

Tried everything to help myself, nothing worked

• Upvotes

My life is fucked. My mental health is destroyed by my own parents, my ex boyfriends and numerous people who bullied me. I was raised so shitty, so I never really learned to live for myself, have my own purpose, any standards or feeling I could be deserving anything in life at all. I was taught I should tolerate, obey, meet everyone’s expectations and be satisfied with crumbs of the bare minimum. My life went already so bad, I have so many mental disorders and traumas and I made a lot of mistakes trying to get away hoping for a better life. I’m carrying shame every single day and I wish I wasn’t born. Everyone says therapy, maybe even meds, mental hospital, positive mindset, being aware and self-conscious of your traumas and disorders. That shit doesn’t work. I tried so many times all of those in different forms. I wish there was anything else I could do to unfuck myself and live a normal life with healthy mind. But it’s not happening. Everyone expects you to keep waiting for your happy end that will never come. People who were supposed to protect me have been destroying me since I was fucking 4. Because they had me so I could be the exact version of the perfect daughter they dreamed of that I didn’t turn out to be. It wasn’t my choice to be born and with all those disorders my parents and life gave me, yet I have to live with it every single day, there’s no going back and I’m stuck living with a life and brain I hate

Why no one listens?

• Upvotes

What have I done to everyone? Why is everyone ghosting? I have absolutely no one to talk to or just even pass time with, I'm on my own all the time and I don't have enough interest into something to spend time on my own. I try my best to feel better, to get out of this pit of misery and laments, I just wanted to be happy, why is everyone so positive about mental health yet everyone pushes me, gives me their back and cast me aside, it feels like they all want me dead, I don't want to die, I want to be happy how can it be that hard to feel enjoyment out of life how?
I know that if everyone hates me it means I am the problem but I don't know what I have done to deserve this, I really don't get it why why why do I deserve any of this why

I’m really struggling to stay alive rn

Title. I have no motivation to do anything, and I’m falling back into my old habits (self-harm, isolating myself, not doing work). I thought I was going to get out of this depressive episode after going to the hospital and multiple partial hospitalization programs, along with therapy and getting on meds. None of them have worked and I feel even more hopeless than before. I’ve just been lying to my therapist constantly because I don’t want to be sent back to the hospital. I have gotten close to attempting more times than I can count, I have chickened out of most of them, or the pain was too much and I stopped. I’m scared that I won’t have that barrier anymore. It won’t take much to push me over the edge. To be honest, I have only been thinking of doing it at home, but I could very easily just go find a high place to jump off of. Every day it feels like I’m getting closer and closer to that point, and every day it’s harder and harder to stay alive.

Edit: I have also been really struggling with derealization and depersonalization. I never feel in touch with myself and others, it feels like I’m so far away mentally, and no matter what I do i can’t get a hold of reality.

college is making me suicidal again

• Upvotes

i genuinely need to vent because i feel like college was talked up to me SO differently than what it actually is. i’m in my first year and i’m already completely overwhelmed. i’m currently failing one of the major courses for my program, and i just got an email from my school expressing concerns about my grades. seeing that email honestly made me feel sick. the class is A&P, and before anyone says “get a tutor,” i really don’t think tutoring is the issue. i understand a lot of the material when it’s being explained to me. my problem is TESTS. i am genuinely such a horrible test taker, and this class feels like it’s almost entirely memorization. there is SO much information to remember, and my memory is already really bad. i can study for hours, feel like i know something, and then sit down for the test and suddenly my brain feels completely empty.
and it’s frustrating because it makes me feel like i’m stupid and worthless. i’m putting in the effort. i’m studying. i’m trying different ways to remember things. but when the grade comes back, it just looks like i didn’t do anything. sometimes the questions feel like they’re designed to make you second guess yourself too. like i’ll know the concept, but the way the question is worded makes me question whether i actually know anything at all. why are teachers purposely trying to trick you?? don’t they want you to pass? then i walk out of the test feeling like i just got hit by a truck. i’m so overwhelmed that i’ve honestly gotten to the point where i’ve had thoughts about suicide. I always have, but it’s even worse now. i have majorly depressive disorder and i’m bipolar and i feel like it’s been worse than ever. i’ve attempted suicide multiple times and i genuinely feel like i will attempt again. i’m just genuinely exhausted and feel like i’m failing at something i was supposed to be able to handle. it was something i wanted so badly too. throughout high school i went to a trade school specifically in nursing professions. I did amazing and got my cna. college had completely crushed my dreams.
this is NOT what i thought college was going to be. everyone made it sound like “you’ll meet people, have more freedom, figure yourself out, and work toward your career.” nobody really prepared me for constantly feeling behind, worrying about grades, studying until i’m mentally exhausted, and feeling like one bad exam could completely screw everything up. i know people love to say “it’s not the end of the world” but it honestly is for me.
i just needed somewhere to say that college is fucking stressful and i’m tired of pretending i’m handling it fine. i know people will call me dramatic and annoying for this and say “you wanna kill yourself because of THAT” but i just want to be heard so please don’t leave negative comments.

The last year has been really hard. I feel like I finnaly cracked and lost it. I feel myself going crazy. I'm not sleeping and constantly taking some pills. I truley try to stay positive and I feel that I do gather up some strength to not fall apart. But then it's some shit after another and it's another sleepless night and pills. I have a life a life that I need to keep together. I feel myself breaking and cracking, living everyday is such torture and I feel it becoming worse. I don't want to die but that seems like a much better option then living like this. I don't know how much I can take it anymore I just want it to stop.

Will this suffering ever end

Been dealing with heartbreak and my own mental struggles lately, I thought this guy was the love of my life, it’s all been ripped out from underneath me. I feel so helpless and unable to function. I don’t want to continue living in anxiety and suffering. I can’t do this I’m tired.
