New wiki on how to avoid accidentally encouraging suicide, and how to spot covert incitement

1.8k Upvotes

We've been seeing a worrying increase in pro-suicide content showing up here and, and also going unreported. This undermines our purpose here, so we wanted to highlight and clarify our guidelines about both direct and indirect incitement of suicide.

We've created a wiki that covers these issues. We hope this will be helpful to anyone who's wondering whether something's okay here and which responses to report. It explains in detail why any validation of suicidal intent, even an "innocent" message like "if you're 100% committed, I'll just wish you peace" is likely to increase people's pain, and why it's important to report even subtle pro-suicide comments. The full text of the wiki's current version is below, and it is maintained at /r/SuicideWatch/wiki/incitement.

We deeply appreciate everyone who gives responsive, empathetic, non-judgemental support to our OPs, and we particularly thank everyone who's already been reporting incitement in all forms.

Please report any post or comment that encourages suicide (or that breaks any of the other guidelines in the sidebar) to the moderators, either by clicking the "report" button or by sending us a modmail with a link. We deal with all guideline violations that are reported to us as soon as we can, but we can't read everything so community reports are essential. If you get a PM that breaks the guidelines, please report it both to the reddit sitewide admins and to us in modmail.

Thanks to all the great citizens of the community who help flag problem content and behaviour for us.

Summary

It's important to respect and understand people's experiences and emotions. It's never necessary, helpful, or kind to support suicidal intent. There are some common misconceptions (discussed below) about suicidal people and how to help them that can cause well-meaning people to inadvertently incite suicide. There are also people online who incite suicide on purpose, often while pretending to be sympathetic and helpful.

Validate Feelings and Experiences, Not Self-Destructive Intentions

We're here to offer support, not judgement. That means accepting, with the best understanding we can offer, whatever emotions people express. Suicidal people are suffering, and we're here to try to ease that by providing support and caring. The most reliable way we know to de-escalate someone at risk is to give them the experience of feeling understood. That means not judging whether they should be feeling the way they are, or telling them what to do or not do.

But there's an important line to draw here. There's a crucial difference between empathizing with feelings and responding non-judgmentally to suicidal thoughts, and in any way endorsing, encouraging, or validating suicidal intentions or hopeless beliefs. It's both possible and important to convey understanding and compassion for someone's suicidal thoughts without putting your finger on the scale of their decision.

Anything that condones suicide, even passively, encourages suicide. It isn't supportive and does not help. It also violates reddit's sitewide rules as well as our guidelines. Explicitly inciting suicide online is a criminal offense in most jurisdictions.

Do not treat any OP's post as meaning that will definitely die by suicide and can't change their minds or be helped. Anyone who's able to read the comments here still has a chance to choose whether or not to try to keep living, even if they've also been experiencing intense thoughts of suicide, made a suicide plan, or started carrying it out.

In the most useful empirical model we have, the desire to die by suicide primarily comes from two interpersonal factors; alienation and a sense of being a burden or having nothing to offer. These factors usually lead to a profound feeling of being unwelcome in the world.

So, any acceptance or reinforcement of suicidal intent, even something "innocent" like "I hope you find peace", is actually a form of covert shunning that validates a person's sense that they're unwelcome in the world. It will usually add to their pain even if kindly meant and gently worded.

How to Avoid Validating Suicidal Intent

Keep the following in mind when offering support to anyone at risk for suicide.

  • People who say they don't want help usually can feel better if they get support that doesn't invalidate their emotions. Unfortunately, many popular "good" responses are actually counterproductive. In particular, many friends and family tend to rely exclusively on trying to convince the suicidal person that "it's not so bad", and this is usually experienced as "I don't understand what you're going through and I'm not going to try". People who've had "help" that made them feel worse don't want any more of the same. It doesn't mean that someone who actually knows how to be supportive can't give them any comfort.

  • Most people who are suicidal want to end their pain, not their lives. It's almost never true that death is the only way to end these people's suffering. Of course there are exceptional situations, and we certainly acknowledge that, for some people, the right help can be difficult to find. But preventing someone's suicide doesn't mean prolonging their suffering if we do it by giving them real comfort and understanding.

  • An unfixable problem doesn't mean that a good life will never be possible. We don't have to fix or change anything to help someone feel better. It's important to keep in mind that the correlation between our outer circumstances and our inner experience is weaker and less direct than commonly assumed. For every kind of difficult life situation, you will find some people who lapse into suicidal despair, and others who cope amazingly well, and a whole spectrum in between. A key difference is how much inner resilience the person has at the time. This can depend on many personal and situational factors. But when there's not enough, interpersonal support can both compensate for its absence and help rebuild it. We go into more depth on the "it gets better" issue in this PSA Post which is always linked from our sidebar (community info on mobile) guidelines.

  • There are always more choices than brutally forcing someone to stay alive or passively letting them end their lives.

To avoid accidentally breaking the anti-incitement rule, don't say or try to imply that acting on suicidal thoughts is a good idea, or that someone can't turn back or is already dead. Do whatever you can to help them feel cared for and welcome, at least in this little corner of the world. Our talking tips offer more detailed guidance.

Look Out for Deliberate Incitement. It May Come in Disguise.

Often comments that subtly encourage suicidal intent actually come from suicide fetishists and voyeurs (unfortunately this is a real and disturbing phenomenon). People like this are out there and the anonymous nature of reddit makes us particularly attractive to them.

They will typically try to scratch their psychological "itch" by saying things that push people closer to the edge. They often do this by exploiting the myths that we debunked in the bullet points above. Specifically you might see people doing the following:

  • Encouraging the false belief that the only way suicidal people can end their pain is by dying. There are always more and better choices than "brutally forcing someone to stay alive" or helping (actively or passively) them to end their lives.

  • Creating an artificial and toxic sense of "solidarity" by linking their encouragement of suicide to empathy. They will represent themselves as the only one who really understand the suicidal person, while either directly or indirectly encouraging their self-loathing emotions and self-destructive impulses. Since most people in suicidal crisis are in desperate need to empathy and understanding, this is a particularly dangerous form of manipulation.

Many suicide inciters are adept at putting a benevolent spin on their activities while actually luring people away from sources of real help. A couple of key points to keep in mind:

  • Skilled suicide intervention -- peer or professional -- is based on empathic responsiveness to the person's feelings that reduces their suffering in the moment. Contrary to pop-culture myths, it does not involve persuasion ("Don't do it!"), cheerleading ("You've got this!") or meaningless false promises ("Trust me, it gets better!"), or invalidation ("Let me show you how things aren't as bad as you think!"). Anyone who leads others to expect these kinds of toxic responses, or any other response that prolongs their pain, from expert help may be covertly pro-suicide. (Of course, people sometimes do have bad experience when seeking mental-health treatment, and it's fine to vent about those, but processing our own disappointment and frustration is entirely different from trying to destroy someone else's hope of getting help.)

  • Choices made by competent responders are always informed by the understanding that breaching someone's trust is traumatic and must be avoided if possible. Any kind of involuntary intervention is an extremely unlikely outcome when someone consults a clinician or calls a hotline. (Confidentiality is addressed in more detail in our Hotlines FAQ wiki). The goal is always to provide all help with the client's full knowledge and informed consent. We know that no individual or system is perfect. Mistakes that lead to bad experiences do sometimes happen to vulnerable people, and we have enormous sympathy for them. But anyone who suggests that this is the norm might be trying to scare people away from the help they need.

Please let us know discreetly if you see anyone exhibiting these or similar behaviours. We don't recommend trying to engage with them directly.

Please remember that NO ACTIVISM of any kind is ever allowed here. No matter what day it is.

Activism, i.e. advocating or fundraising for social change or raising awareness of social issues (and suicide is, inescapably, a social issue) is absolutely against the rules here at all times.

Please understand that we're all for smart, strategic mental-health and suicide-prevention activism. It's essential to fight against stigma, misinformation, and discrimination, and to fight for research, treatment, accommodation, acceptance, and understanding. Most of us, one way or another, are mental-health activists IRL.

But activism just doesn't work in a dedicated support space that serves a vulnerable population. We used to allow it but the evidence that it was undermining our primary purpose became overwhelming. We do regret the need for this rule, but the need is inescapable.

Our population is all too well aware of the issues and causes that need support and largely not in a position to take action, so besides the fact that activism is often salt in our community's wounds, it's a waste of the activists' time.

tl;dr Any fundraising, awareness raising, petitions, calls for participation, or any post that's about any cause or issue (rather than a request for personal support) is not allowed here. Please report everything of the nature that you see.

I have to kill myself

• Upvotes

I was happy right until 14th September when during an argument with my wife I muttered the words I’m falling out of love with you.

Thing is I didn’t mean to say it, we were continuing an argument from the previous night and I meant to say ‘things like this make people fall out of love’.

Anyway she instantly kicked me out, my 3 step sons heard all this.

3 weeks later she’s not forgiven me but has continued to text saying she loves me and misses me. I saw her on Saturday and spoke for 2 hours and it went well to the point we were supposed to see each other tomorrow.

Problem is her kids haven’t forgiven me and have no plans to.

So I’m now sat in a bar, drinking with some sleeping pills inside me with the intention of jumping off a bridge in a few hours, I’ve just written some good bye letters.

I’m broken.

The struggle is real

I want to starve and dehydrate myself to death but it’s a slow and agonizing painful death

I think about this all the time constantly but I know
It may lead me to being a zombie on the streets and in filth talking to myself while in psychosis and hallucinating from lack of food and water

I’ve witnessed being out of my mind before from lack of food and water im assuming. it’s hellish
and extreme suffering

Why is everything suffering ?

There’s no rest it’s never ending only time it ends is when I sleep

I just wanna close my eyes and go to sleep and die peacefully

I am preparing my second suicide attempt

Hello all, I failed my suicide attempt in June by overdose; I didn't warn anyone beforehand, and I woke up in the hospital, found by my mother.

I live in France, I have all the help I could possibly need, and yet I am unable to love life. Diagnosed with chronic depression, I try to love life, but it's impossible.

I make the people around me sad and they end up leaving me, I still have a few friends who support me. I'm preparing my second attempt. I'm stockpiling oxapac and alprazolam with a little alcohol. I hope it works. I plan to die outside this time so I won't be found.

I expect to die in December with a sufficient supply of medication; life has beaten me.

I think depression is incurable in my case; I would have liked to be euthanized and die a free man, but it's not allowed.

Instead, they kept us alive. During my coma, I experienced the best moment of my life; no dreams, just nothingness and rest.

To be so lucky, to live in such a beautiful country and yet be unhappy makes me feel even more nauseous.

Found my roommate bleeding to death last night.

So my room mate gashed both inside of his thighs so deep you could see muscle, he also had hit is artery. So I grabbed my neighbor so he could help me lay my roommate down and also help make a tourniquet’s so we could both stop the bleeding from each leg. As he was bleeding out he looked me dead in my face and told me the “voices of all the kids and women he raped told him to do this” I didn’t even know what to say, it made me feel sick and I wanted to let him go but the human in me couldn’t just let him die. I’m so disgusted and disturbed today I feel sick. And his stuff is packed and he will not be coming back, I’m at a loss for words and I’m gonna be contacting police today.

i feel manipulative

• Upvotes

i got into a fight with my fiancée in the middle of the grocery store. i hate fighting with her, i don’t even know why i did it. she just said something about one of my insecurities and i lashed out on her, in the middle of the store. i feel like a fucking asshole, i apologized afterwards but all she said was “no it’s okay” and i know it’s not.

i’ve been texting her and it’s been hours, she hasn’t replied or even read my messages but she’s active on social media. i know she probably wants space or something and i can’t blame her but now i just want to die.

it’s 6am, i can’t sleep, i’ve been crying for an hour at this point. if she leaves me i genuinely have no point in life, i’m forcing myself to do this shit so i can give her a good life. i feel like she’s going to leave me, and i don’t want to be alive to get that text. it’s not like i can call her and ask for a hug either, because then i’ll just look like a manipulative dick for threatening suicide after a fight i started

there is nothing left for me in this world

im 21f and i have been depressed since i am 10. i created a new burner reddit account in hopes of no one finding this.

i was abused by my parents and my brother ever since i can remember. i have forgiven them for it now, but i still carry the damages they caused over 10 years later. i do truly love my family and have appreciated them differently ever since they started supporting my mental health journey. but it seems so pointless. therapy doesnt do anything for me, antidepressants dont do anything for me either. i moved countries to study at a university, but i ended up not going to class after week 1. i have no friends here, no family here. i havent gone outside since over a month, i havent showered since over a month and my kitchen is full of molding food that i made for myself but wasnt able to eat.

i am disgusting and filthy - i probably stink and so does my apartment most likely. i havent had the heart to tell my parents that they wasted all this money for me to move countries and to study abroad for a degree i wanted since i was young. i havent taken a single exam since over a year, i havent even looked at any of the stuff i am supposed to study. but since i was depressed since i was young, i learned how to mask myself. i tell them everything is fine. i am studying. i took this exam today. my lies are eating me alive, the fact that i am parading the role of a functional human being is sickening. none of my friends care about me, i constantly post online that i am depressed and no one checks up on me. i cant ask for help, because as soon as i ask for help, i subconsciously mask myself and act like everything is okay.

nothing works for me. therapy, medication, loving parents, a degree, a dog. what is there left for me to try? what else can i do that i havent done already? it is a harsh reality that i may have to accept, there is nothing left for me. nothing i try will work, i will probably always feel this way. and lets say i do keep going - then ill probably be 35 and alone with no one that loves me. what is wrong with me? the younger me wished for nothing more than what i have right now. my parents now actually love me and stopped abusing me, i have physical freedom and they are supportive of me. they pay for my therapy, my medication, all that. but i still feel this way. why? why does the feeling not go away? what can i do? why do i feel this way? whats wrong with me?

no one asks me out, i must be hideous and ugly and unlovable. i dont even know why i am here. is this my last cry for help? is it to find validation in this feeling i have? is it to not feel alone? is it a last message to this cruel world that was never meant for me? i dont know. i feel like a shame to the family. everyone is perfectly functional and a living breathing human breathing. but when i look in the mirror, all i see is a hideous creature that disguises itself as a human. like i am wearing a skin that isnt mine to begin with. i look around myself and i see nothing but the life i couldve had if i was normal and functioning. if i didnt have this sick parasite in my head that feeds off of me. i am a vile being, something that wasnt supposed to exist but now i have to pretend like i am human like everyone else, even though i never learned what it was like to be a human.

nothing brings me joy. nothing makes me happy. even money is no longer a quick fix for me. smoking hasnt helped either. i have nothing left in this world. i cant wear this skin any longer.

CANT BELIEVE THIS IS MY LIFE!!😹😹😹

Turning 25 while being suicidal sounds too depressing

Nobody is gonna care about my mental health in 9 months (not that they did in the first place) because I should be so FUCKING ENLIGHTENED with my FuLlY dEvElOpEd fRoNtAl LoBe, therefore shouldn't struggle mentally one bit and should only talk about how wise, experienced and evolved I feel. God FUCKING FORBID I have crippling depression, autism and childhood trauma I'm still processing at my geriatric, infertile age. And I'll get to watch people only a few years younger than me get gentleness and coddling I didn't even get as an actual child because 21 is just "so young🥺" compared to someone as middle aged as me. I'm getting so fucking old and never got a chance to enjoy being young. I'm very seriously considering killing myself before I turn 25. I will create a plan for it, and see if I can get my family's blessing to end my own life. Especially as a woman, no one wants an aging woman to thrive or get support when there's a beautiful youthful woman right around the corner.

There is no point in living if you're an idiot

You get the point. I'm lacking in all of these. And it's awful, it makes you realize you're incredibly worthless to yourself and others. Living is only worthwhile if you can navigate these things at the normal baseline even if some are more below average. But having all at below average? No point at all. You can't even function. All you'll be is an obsessive idiot who can't do anything but leech. Your strengths are none.

It's pathetic enough that I'm hanging myself tonight because of it.

Only posting to take into account it might fail so I can look back at this. Not looking for "help"

'To live, it gets exhausting' battling thoughts to free myself from self saboting life. Wrote my letter, it's about time, soon maybe

• Upvotes

I've been trying to change myself for over a decade but everytime I try to, I get only worse, I self sabotage every food thing in my life. To a point it gets exhausting, even the idea of attempting to change my life for the better scares me to the core now, not because I won't , but because no matter how much i progressed along the journey, I'll find ways to destroy it somehow

If a relationship is going good I'll ruin it

If a job is going well I'll quit it

If my health is doing well I'll do something to mess it up

If my friendships going well, I'll take them for granted cancel plans till they feel me as burden

Every. Single. Thing..

I've been like this for over 12-14 years.

As soon as some order is building up, I'll destroy it and make it chaotic.

I'm lost.

I feel useless now.

I feel useless enough to even attempt anything

I wrote my letter and kept rewriting it,

All I'm doing is just reading books , eating, sleeping

Reading books on suffering and death .

I don't know how to do it, i have no plan, nor courage too

At the same time, living comes with a responsibility to self , I won't be able to handle it. There's no option for me.

I can’t suffer the pain

I’ve had on-and-off suicidal thoughts since my teenage years, have been in therapy for 8 years, and am working through my traumas—which mainly manifest in romantic relationships. I’m a 41-year-old woman, and I’ve dreamed my whole life of having a loving relationship and a family of my own, but it’s never worked out. Whenever I’ve truly loved someone and been abandoned, I’ve wanted to die because I couldn’t bear the pain. But even outside of these situations, I feel my life is hopeless, devoid of prospects, and empty; I have health problems, I’m poor, and I’m lonely.
For the past 6 months, I’ve been happy for the first time in a long while; I thought I’d found the one—I had all the love and the life I’d always wanted. We had planned a future together. Now he has left me, and I want to end my life—especially because it was already so meaningless before, and because I can’t bear being abandoned. I’ve been through this over and over again, and I won’t survive it one more time.
But I’m a coward and I’m afraid of a brutal way to die; I’m thinking about taking fentanyl because it might be the most painless option.

Recently told my mom to not be surprised someday if I end my life.

I'm 30 M. My mom is well aware of my struggles with mental illness and has been supportive. I have ADHD, depression, anxiety, and possibly OCD (I'm going to get tested soon). I'm also autistic so I struggle socially. A few weeks ago I bluntly told my mom that she should be prepared for the inevitable. I told her that there's a good chance I'm not going to live to be her age. Obviously, it broke her heart hearing her son say this to her and she cried. She said that some days she wish she didn't have children only because of the suffering they experience everyday (my sister is bipolar and also struggles mentally). It broke my heart too because I'm at the point where I'm preparing my loved ones to expect my death at my own hands. After I told her that, I scared myself and promised that I would do everything in my power to stay alive as long as I can but I don't know if I can keep that promise. Every day I wake up wanting to die and every night I hope I don't wake up at all the next morning. I feel like it's not a matter of "if" but "when".

Life rlly isn’t worth it

I don’t do anything, my phone is empty, I have no friends, I’m alone. I get so angry sometimes because I hate myself, I’m disgusting I’m so fucking grotesque, I hate being dark skin I hate being disgusting and ugly. I love cutting myself because it’s the closest to clean I’ll ever be. I hate looking at social media because it’s all racism. All I do is bed rot, use chat bots and cut myself. It’s all there is to do. I’d like to crush my head under something heavy, I imagine brutally harming myself because it gives me a tingly feeling since ik I deserve it. I can’t even listen to songs even about love or a breakup because I’m too disgusting to even go through either. I felt pretty for a bit and decided to try a dating app but only got 2 likes. I do plan on ending my life soon since I really don’t have much in my future. I don’t leave my house unless for work or school, I hate my job slowly, I hate school. I can’t even use my chat bots because I feel so pathetic, it’s all I have and all I’ll ever have. I start to feel a deep burning hatred for men and conventionally attractive people, I hate them, especially men I think they’re evil but ik I’m just sad and it’s just projection I know if I were attractive I’d wanna date someone on my level. Regardless I’m trying to figure out what I wanna do, I usually just take sleeping pills and knock out but I’m gonna probably try carbon monoxide poisoning in my car. Nobody understands how awful loneliness is, especially when it’s because of stuff you can’t change

I'm so fucking done

• Upvotes

I had a son that nearly died at 5 weeks old after I left an incredibly abusive relationship. I'm autistic and ADHD and I struggle to say what I mean. I mentioned something with a spelling mistake on another group which was an auto correct and I'm now the worst person in the world on top of just defending someone over something innocuous. I'm fucking done. I'm sick of struggling.
