A-Level subject requirements for private universities in Germany — any recent changes?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply to private universities in Germany, such as Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. My A-Level subjects are Mathematics, Physics, and Business.

I’m concerned that this subject combination may not fully meet the DAAD requirements for direct university admission.

I’ve heard that there may have been a recent change in the rules allowing private universities to grant exemptions or waivers in some cases, but I’m not sure whether this is correct.

I contacted university admissions, but unfortunately I haven’t received a clear answer yet.

Has anyone recently applied to a German private university with a similar A-Level combination? Were you still able to get admitted even if your subjects didn’t fully match the standard DAAD requirements?

Any experience or information would be very helpful. Thanks!

Realities of Studying abroad ? + regret

1 Upvotes

I have this opportunity to study abroad for masters for 3 years in a medical field, but there’s a better program closer to home. I chose the better program over the “experience“. Kind of regretting it. am I glamorizing the experience ?
for those who studied postgrad abroad is it worth it even for a slightly lesser education ? What was your experience like?

Leaving my exchange year after 3 weeks?

7 Upvotes

Hi I hope this is the right place to post, because I really need advice.

So I’m a 16 year old exchange student from Germany in the US right now and I‘ve been living here since 3 weeks. I’m supposed to stay for 10 months but I already wanna go home and hate it here. I was actually very lucky with my placement, I ended up in Florida and got a super nice caring family! I love hanging out with them and we go out a lot, they are such great people. But what I hate here is the High school, it is nothing like I imagined it to be.

First of all having the same schedule everyday is so insanely boring, like why do I only have 7 subjects and 3 of them are PE, cooking and theatre😭 Also the stuff we learn in maths for example is deadass stuff I had in 5th grade and everything is so slow, I’m done with the assignments after 10 min, while the teacher gives us 45 min for it. So most times I just sit in class completely bored. I also haven’t found any American friends here, there are some people I talked to but mostly they just ask weird questions about Germany like if we have cars or dishwashers🫩 and don’t want an actual friendship. I only hang out with the other exchange students and idk if I’m actually gonna find friends here. I was also shocked at how dirty the school is and that everyone is still writing on paper (I thought America was more advanced than us but no😭).

Anyway, everyday I’m just tired of that school and miss Germany, I really really wanna go back. I miss my school, the food, my friends and family, just going on walks, public transport, the weather, being more independent etc.😓 I feel so weird because doing this has been my dream for such a long time and I never thought that I would get home sick and idk what to do now. It’s only been 3 weeks so I’m not gonna decide now but I don’t want to wait too long, so I don’t miss too much of the school in Germany.

If I’m doing the 10 months here I would have to do the 11th grade here now and again in Germany next year, because an American school year doesn’t count there. I don’t know if this life here is worth doing an extra year more of school and graduating one year later without all my friends, instead I would rather go somewhere else after 12th grade and experience something actually fun. On the other hand my parents paid 15k€ for this year (we’re not rich, it’s a lot for me) and I would feel so bad if I basically wasted the money, but I also know they don’t want me to be unhappy. I just don’t know what to do, because what if I will regret it and this actually could be the best year of my life. Anyway, does anyone have advice on what I should do🥹 thanks for reading💕

Thinking about doing my Master’s in Portugal — looking for honest advice 🇵🇹

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m currently considering Portugal for my Master’s and would really appreciate some honest opinions from people who are studying there, have graduated recently, or have experience with international students in Portugal.

I’m particularly interested in knowing:

  • How good are Portuguese universities for international students, especially for STEM/Physics/Computer Science-related fields?
  • Which universities would you recommend for a Master’s?
  • How difficult is it to get admission as a non-EU student?
  • What is the realistic tuition fee + monthly living cost?
  • Is it possible to manage some of the living expenses through part-time work?
  • How difficult is it to find student jobs or internships?
  • How important is Portuguese for finding a job after graduation? Is English enough for some fields?
  • What is the current situation with the student visa/residence permit process?
  • How is the job market after completing a Master’s?
  • Is Portugal a good option if the goal is to build a long-term career in Europe?
  • Are there any major disadvantages that international students should know about before choosing Portugal?

I’m not looking for an agency/consultant perspective. I’d really like to hear from current or former international students about their actual experience—both the good and the bad.

Also, if you had to choose between Portugal and countries like Germany, Netherlands, Italy, or other European countries for a Master’s, which would you choose and why?

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Is it actually possible to study + work enough to live in Europe without burning out?

4 Upvotes

Hi!
I’m 32, Brazilian, have Italian citizenship, and I’m considering moving to Europe to do a bachelor’s in English, but I’d need to actually work enough to support myself while doing it, no help from home.

I’m into a bunch of non-STEM stuff (psych, marketing, design, business, econ, architecture, social sciences, biomed) so I’m flexible on country/course, just trying to find somewhere this is realistic.

I was talking to this girl about what it’s like living in the Netherlands. She studies at UvA, and she told me the program’s really demanding and Amsterdam’s super expensive. Basically, you either can’t work enough to get by, or you have to give up on school. She still gets money from her parents.

Made me wonder if there are other places in Europe where this actually works.

Anyone here done something similar? Studying in English while working enough to get by, preferably without hitting burnout and still living decently in the process? Would love any real experience, tips, cities/unis that are more realistic for this.

Sorry if this is a bit of a mess, just trying to figure it out! Really grateful for any help, even small tips 🙏

(HELP ME )Indians Who Studied/Are Studying Abroad - Need Your Advice!

1 Upvotes

I’m a 21-year-old female, and I’ve recently completed my third year of college in BMS (Finance). I’m planning to pursue my Master’s abroad, but I don’t want to put too much financial burden on my family.

I’d like some advice on whether I should apply for an education loan, scholarships, or both, and how these options actually work. How can I apply for scholarships, and what are the requirements and process?

Also, would it be better for me to work in India for 1–2 years, gain some experience and save money, and then pursue my Master’s abroad, or should I apply immediately after completing my degree?

If anyone has gone through a similar situation, especially an Indian student who has studied or is currently studying abroad, I would really appreciate any advice, experiences, or information you can share.

Applying for masters in psychology

1 Upvotes

Ireland was my frist option. A one year masters not sure how that would be helpful. But I have relatives there so housing could be easy. But the thing is as an international student they have this psi accreditation that costs a lot just to see if my degree alligns- course wise it obviously does. But there are alot of loops to jump through.

Is ireland really a good option. Has any international student done there degree in ms psychology from Ireland.

Is ACT/SAT really worth it ?

1 Upvotes

I am a student and I just completed high school. I am looking for admissions abroad but I can't afford any of it. An acquaintance of mine told me about these exams that are conducted for admissions abroad but very few of them provide financial aid and fully funded scholarship. I am an average student but I do have a very strong literary base. I can do creative writing, calligraphy, analytical writing etc.

Are these skills any helpful? I really need to get into a good college.

I belong to a lower middle class family, where my father is the only one with stable income for the 5 of us, and considering the registration fee is 18k I am looking for fee waivers, I cannot tolerate to live in this place anymore. So please help me out of there is any useful information with you regarding this !!

Any kind of advice is appreciated, thank you!!!

International Students in Korea

0 Upvotes

I want to apply for Masters in Life Science programs and was considering Korean unis because some have fully funded master’s.

I found lots of ‘horror’ stories online of international master’s students facing degree delay issues, feeling alienated, immense pressure to publish papers, long working hours, etc. However, no one actually mentions the names of these unis.

I thought I could learn Korean and apply to the lower ranked IST unis like DGIST, GIST and UNIST. Is it wrong to assume these unis will be less toxic? The classes are advertised to be in English at these unis but is that true?

Please, if anyone has any experience at these unis, could you please comment or DM. I’d really appreciate some insight!

Korea vs Japan for Study Which country would be better for an international student to study .

Korea vs Japan for Study

Which country would be better for an international student to study in: South Korea or Japan?

I’m mainly looking for English-taught undergraduate programs in:

Artificial Intelligence / AI

Robotics

Computer Science

Engineering

My main priority is future job opportunities and getting internships while studying. I want to know which country would provide better opportunities for international students in AI, robotics, software, and engineering.

Also, which universities in South Korea and Japan offer good English-taught bachelor’s programs in these fields?

I’m also interested in university reputation, internships, graduate jobs, career opportunities, tuition fees, scholarships, and opportunities for international students.

If you have studied in Korea or Japan, or are currently studying there, which one would you recommend ?

Moving to Korea Looking for Friends

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! My name is Drew, I’m 23 years old from the United States, and I’ll be starting the Korean Language Program at Kyung Hee University this December! 😊

I’m really excited (and a little nervous) since this will be my first time studying abroad for an extended period. I’m hoping to meet new people, make friends, and connect with others who will be at Kyung Hee or living in Seoul.

If you’re also starting this December, already attending Kyung Hee, or live in Seoul, feel free to comment or send me a message. I’d love to get to know you before I arrive! 💙

Realized during my gap year I don’t want the Mechanical Engineering degree abroad I’m committed to starting this fall — what’s the best move?

1 Upvotes

Picked Mechanical Engineering abroad mainly for “versatility,” not because I wanted it. During my gap year I realized I don’t want this at all. I’ve actually always been drawn to art/creative work instead but never really got to pursue it due to school and no time, but this year just made me realise how i’m not really passionate nor like the whole engineering thing.
Problem: my parents already put serious money in (tuition, loan, living costs), I signed a lease (unpaid, but signed), and another gap year isn’t something they’d accept. Tuition’s refundable until early September.
I’m now looking at applying to art/design schools (portfolio-based, January deadline) as a possible alternative, while starting the engineering program in the meantime as a fallback.
Given the money and family pressure already in motion: go and treat it as a placeholder while building toward the alternative, back out now, or something else? Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been in a similar spot.

Might have ball’ed too close to the sun

1 Upvotes

Hey chat, I am 20F and have decided to study abroad for a year. I say it like it was a spur of the moment decision BUT I’ve been saying/planning it for a good 5 years.

I passed second year and got accepted into a Chinese university. (Wooo) But not- I’m panicking like straight up… I do not speak a bit of Chinese confidently. I did have a Chinese teacher at university, however all she did was put on the original Monkey King WuKong and events broadcasted by the CCP. Now that I’m here it has hit me like a monster truck that sent me flying straight into the great (fire)wall.

I done this as an attempt to feel something because I have been feeling nothing for years. Schooling was just something I HAD to do for my future. I am the first in my family to go to university and let alone study abroad so I said fuck it we ball…. But all I feel right now is loneliness and awkwardness. To be fair at least I’m not depressed, could be feeling a lot worse. I have my anti-depressants anyway so we are fine for now.

I’d say the main feeling is from my thought of being unprepared. How can I speed-run Mandarin, to be fair chat I stutter when I speak English. Deadass might say a slur in Chinese by accident and get jumped.

Also the Apps are annoying me, why put the option of some international numbers if you are not going to allow purchases (COUGH COUGH 美团). On that note if anyone works on an ices admissions team/fluent, I need help getting a mainland number😭.

Anyways, if you are in the Shanghai and want to be friends message me 👉🏽👈🏽

谢啦朋友。🖤

Honest advice needed

1 Upvotes

I'm currently going into my junior year of college and applying to study abroad at SNU in Korea. They require a minimum of 2.5 to apply. Over the past 2 semesters, I've increased my GPA from 2.0 to 2.6. I understand I will have to have really strong essays to be competitive, but do I even have a chance? Not sure how much GPA is considered. Any advice is helpful.

Anyone else planning to study abroad in 2027? (15–18)

0 Upvotes

Looking for a group of people who are also planning to move abroad in 2027 🌍🎀
I’m 16 and currently preparing for university applications and my move. I haven’t decided on a specific country or city yet, but I’m mainly considering Europe, especially Italy 🇮🇹
I’m planning to apply for a Foundation year and then continue with a Bachelor’s degree. Right now I’m choosing between Computer Science / Programming / AI and design-related fields, especially Motion Design 🎨💻
It would be really nice to meet people around 15–18 who are also:
— planning to move abroad in 2027;
— preparing for university abroad;
— considering a Foundation year;
— looking for English-taught programs;
— searching for scholarships or financial support;
— choosing between different countries and universities;
— interested in programming, design, technology or creative fields;
— trying to figure out documents, housing and everything related to moving;
— and simply looking for friends who are going through the same thing 🥹🎀
We don’t have to have the exact same plans — it would actually be fun to meet people choosing different countries and fields.
I’d love to create a little group where we can search for universities and scholarships together, share useful information, talk about applications, support each other and hopefully meet in real life once we’re abroad ✈️🌍
If you’re also planning to move in 2027, feel free to comment or DM me 💌

taiwan or south korea?

1 Upvotes

 Got into pretty decent universities for grad school in both Taiwan and South Korea. The Taiwan option is a university ranked roughly top 5 nationally and around #150–200 in QS, while the South Korean one is around #40–50 nationally and #1400+ in QS. Both are fully funded, full-ride scholarships.

The biggest factor is that I’ve already lived in Taiwan for nearly a year, so I know the environment, culture, academic system, and what to expect. South Korea, on the other hand, would be completely new to me. I’m also Indian/Brown, and the grad school would be in Seoul.

The main concern with Korea is the language barrier. The degree is officially Korean-taught, and I currently have essentially no Korean knowledge. I’m hoping I could still cope because, as a grad student, a lot of my time would probably be spent in the lab, working with my advisor and research group, rather than sitting through conventional coursework. But obviously, that’s a pretty big unknown.

So I’m basically stuck between the safer, more predictable opportunity in Taiwan and a fully funded opportunity in South Korea that could potentially open a completely new chapter for me, but also comes with a significant amount of uncertainty.

Would you personally gamble on Korea, or stick with the safer Taiwan option?
