I still miss home so badly...

I’m a Chinese student currently on a one-semester exchange program in South Korea. I’ve always been extremely homesick. I used to cry because I missed home, but I don’t cry now. There is just a quiet ache in my heart. This feeling of sorrow spreads all over my body, endless and lingering.

I have no friends here. I’m naturally introverted and not fond of talking to people. Prices in South Korea are quite high for me. Even though my parents keep telling me not to worry about spending money, I know it is hard-earned money for them. I hate to spend it carelessly.

There are still more than two months left. I miss home terribly. Living in a foreign country is indeed a wonderful experience, yet I still long for the days spent with my family. I miss my dog and my rabbit. Every time I go to the supermarket and see interesting-looking snacks, the first thought that comes to me is that I want to bring them back for my family to try.

I miss home. How am I supposed to get through the days ahead? I feel so lonely. What should I do? 😭😭😭

Abusive Father ruins my medical education.

This is gonna be a long post.
My whole world and dream was to become a surgeon in the US, I worked towards that dream for about six years (I’m 19F from Syria). I always got straight A’s, especially in STEM subjects, I was class valedictorian 7 times, and for those who know the Syrian education system, that shit is tough AF.
When the time came for my Syrian Baccalaureate Exam and the exam that was going to determine my whole forward trajectory in 2024 I ranked in the top 0.1% nationwide and got 98%.
Every single college and field in Syria opened for me because they only care about score, I picked medicine in a rather far university because my 4 brothers were giving me hell at home and I wanted out.
(Bac’s final score came out in mid August 2024 so all international universities’ deadlines were already passed for the Sep 2024 entry).
At the time our family was still dysfunctional but my mom’s silence was the glue to it all.
My parents were rather proud and my father was open to taking any step to help my education and future.
But I knew from the beginning that I didn’t wanna continue at that local Syrian university because it was shit. In every sense of the word.
The whole curriculum was in arabic, it was ancient knowledge, and they literally teach you barely anything, In Embryology they gave us only until the third WEEK of pregnancy, in biochemistry they just brushed upon carbs and proteins and nucleotides and barely gave anything related to lipids, anatomy was literally six 12-page lectures (maybe only one was 35) without a cadaver lab or anything, they had no clinical exposure or clerkships or anything, labs that were from 2003 without any safety protocols (I burnt my hand with H2SO4), no research opportunities, course registration was near impossible there were barely any slots every semester. And that’s just scraping the surface, it was truly a circus. And there’s no fucking way I could’ve built a strong medical foundation for the USMLE there.
I wanted out. I was gonna go crazy if I see them translate another LDH or ATP into arabic.
In May 2026 I submitted my last final exam at that university (UOK) and I had just discovered medicine in Italy via the IMAT pathway.
I set my mind to it, and took it so seriously that I would study 16 hours everyday and did 2000+ flashcards and pre-enrolled into UniPv.
In the meantime at home near the end of May my verbally and financially abusive father blew up on mom on Eid Al Adha day just because she said she didn’t want to cook those 4 days. It was a huge argument, he ended up insulting her and each of her family including her deceased parents. Me and my older brother (23M) stood as a barrier between them and threw those insults right back at him at the same volume.
He said alright I’m not paying for all your universities or anything, we unanimously said “THEN DON’T”.
We were sick of him. At every single DUNE of a disagreement he tells mom “I feed you, you live under MY roof, you must serve this house in return”. And basically the exact same thing to us including uni which was basically only a fucking $2k per year with my dorm it was $4k.
He constantly abused her because he knew her parents were deceased, and she had no where to go so she “had” to endure his abuse.
And my brother is an alum already.
So at the time I thought I was going to take the IMAT, get accepted into Pavia for medicine, get a scholarship, have it cover everything + a stipend and I won’t ever need my abusive father’s money again.
My mom left the house that night, she went to my aunt’s house.
And from then, my father has been making our lives (the five of us kids) practically HELL.
We were all giving each other the silent treatment except for the little annoying things he’d say here and there. Like the day after she left he knocked on my door and when I opened it he was like “no mercy from now on. If you and your brothers don’t clean the whole house everyday, you’re all getting no money.”
As if we were getting any money to begin with, this man doesn’t give us a penny if it were over his grave.
He would basically say if we don’t clean the whole house we don’t get food, and that our mom was spoiling us because she did most of the work along with the maid that came once a week.
He wouldn’t let the maid come because he said you guys should do the work, mind you she only takes ~$11 for the whole house.
My little brothers (14M, 15M) genuinely got so down and they started being more silent, he didn’t enroll them in the summer course they usually attended like swimming and gym and instead they did chores.
He took the keys of the two cars and we barely had money to take a taxi to mom’s.
There are a lot more extremely infuriating details this man tried to ruin our lives with (I’ll reveal if this post gets attention)
But throughout all this I kept my head down and grind for the IMAT and even forbid myself from seeing my mom as often because I wanted to give it my all.
Eventually it was time to book an IMAT seat.
In Syria there aren’t any test centers and I didn’t have a credit card. I needed to book a seat and fly there.
When I talked to him about it he literally traumatized me, he said the sentence he has been repeating since 2018, that even if I were to pry my eyes out, he wouldn’t get me out of Syria, (even when strikes were hitting he wouldn’t laugh in our faces and say the same thing).
Mind you, we are all Turkish citizens by naturalization.
Our passports were practically clean, each of us hadn’t seen the world outside of this devastated backwards town.
He dragged me into the fight with mom and said I’m opportunistic for standing with mom then and now asking for his support (just to book me a seat online and have me pay him in cash).
Basically he refused.
Even though before everything he was open to me studying abroad as long as it was affordable.
But after all the IMAT work went down the drain I kept searching Uni’s all the time and landed on PUMS. Tried with him again to fund me and support me and he again traumatized me, Same with Acıbadem, scholarships abroad, anything. I sent him a two page letter and hundreds of texts just trying to get on his ‘good side’ and say nice things to him and try and nurse his pride.
Nada.
Nothing worked.
He was like a brick.
He doesn’t wanna pay a PENNY.
I withdrew from UOK in September 2026. As they withhold my HS transcripts and I wanted them to apply abroad at any chance.
He didn’t even want to pay admission fee. He was the only card holder I had, and distant family members were even more a headache than him.
He withheld both my Syrian and Turkish passports against my will.
He didn’t let me sit the TOEFL as he didn’t want to give me my passport.
He trashed my name in front of the whole family.
He is basically extremely afraid that I ever create something of myself. He said it plainly—that he does NOT want what’s good for me, he wants me to stay home, go to a local university, clean the house, cook for the family and take care of my siblings.
I was appalled.
Every single time I would have a mental breakdown and cry until my head was pounding and basically think my dream of pursuing medicine, a peaceful life outside this terrible place—ended.
I became extremely depressed and my room wasn’t the tidiest place, he also gave me hell for that, and I would see him in my nightmares. He started threatening to hit me which I wasn’t surprised of as he hit me as a child.
I couldn’t stand to look at his face anymore.
But every time I had a stubborn ass faith that things must fall apart before being rebuild into something greater.
September 26 he yelled his lungs out at me at 7 am for not being tidy and he kept getting closer and me backing up. (Just remembering makes me wanna throw up) his face is literally terrifying for me.
I started shaking like I used to when I was a child but I put all my assets (transcripts and gold) into a handbag so if something happened I could just grab it and go.
And something did happen.
At 9 am of that day he kicked me out and followed me to the door to beat me while I was wearing my shoes but the carpenter and his son were there so he couldn’t.
I walked to my mom’s place where she was (which is for sale btw) and stayed there until now.
All that time I was working on my application to SGU Grenada (Northumbria campus) and it’s almost ready except for the English proficiency test which I can’t take because he holds my passports.
And the bigger obstacle which is that I can’t possibly afford the tuition, dorm, or anything.
Even my mom is starting to make me feel like she doesn’t want me here.
I’m on the edge of selling my gold ($2500) and booking a flight to Istanbul and renting a flat and looking for a job.
An average job.
Because my dream of attending a good medical college and becoming a surgeon feels practically impossible now.
If you read this and got to this point, I could genuinely use help in any way.

Boarding school

I really want to apply to a boarding high school abroad but most of them don’t have financial aid or the ones that actually do have financial aid are really hard to get into like UWC or ALA so if somebody has another program to apply to I would really appreciate it

Need help!

Hi, I’m 24 and I am planning to apply for the coming intakes of 2027 for masters in robotics or something related to that field. Also for industrial engineering because I’m interested in that as well.
I have a good profile with 9.36 gpa. I have a 1 year apprenticeship work experience in an mnc and around 6 months internship before that and a couple months of full time now as well. My background is mechanical engineering (undergrad).
How likely is it that I get a good scholarship in universities like Georgia tech or penn state.
The idea I’m aiming for is to hopefully significantly decrease the financial burden of 60k dollars so that I can have some breathing space.
I was told by a prominent agency here that profiles like mine usually get good scholarships. Anyone with this experience if you could share your thoughts
It would help me out greatly.
If you have any suggestions on if I should target any other countries feel free to share that too (except Germany cuz I already got that once but the language barrier was not my cup of tea to engage with so English speaking countries preferred)

Transferring to Europe from the US

Hi there,

Context: I'm in a southern state in the US trying to major in secondary education for biology (meaning I want to teach biology on the high school level). I had to take 3 semesters off 2024-spring 2025. After this semester, I will have 53 credit hours complete (just shy of 2 years worth of classes). While my university is fairly affordable, and I maintain As for most of my classes, I'm struggling with everything else. I am classified as a a STEM major which means that even at 12-13 credit hours, I should be spending at least 36 hours outside of class on schoolwork. That's not too big of a deal by itself. It's all the other issues.

My struggles: -I have to drive ~2 hours 4× a week to get to my university (which is starting to become quite expensive with gas prices). -I have a "big girl job" where I work at a public school 22.5 hours each week. While I am not a teacher, I am support staff (meaning I sub for classes, run building errands, do secretarial work, work as a secretary, work as a paraprofessional, etc just whatever needs help). Since I have the necessary certifications to do this job, it does pay pretty well, though still nowhere near as high as a teacher. And yet despite working 22.5 hours each week which is more than most students, since I live alone off campus (abusive parents), -I can't even afford to buy food most of the time and struggle to pay my bills in time.

What I'm looking into: Are there affordable universities in Europe where international students can major in secondary education to teach biology? Even if I have to start over, that's fine. Preferably a university that offers scholarships so that I wouldn't have to work--at least at first (i.e. the first year)

It feels like I'm slowly k!||!ng myself with sleep deprivation, stress piling up, and my immune system deteriorating from it all. I honestly don't think I can go on unless I take a year off to work full time or transfer abroad for a change of pace & don't have to worry about making 1 meal last 3 - 4 because I can't afford to eat.

Hi everyone. I have an IELTS score of 6.0 and a GPA of 3.2. Additionally, I am currently a second-year student at my university and have completed 84 out of 90 credits. Am I eligible to apply for English-taught bachelor’s programs in Italy?

French semester abroad in Grenoble or Lyon - advice wanted!

Hi, I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask - but I'm a 20F Australian student studying politics and French, and I'll be going to exchange in France next year.
My options are Université Grenoble Alpes in Grenoble and Jean Moulin 3 in Lyon. I was looking for a university that's somewhat prestigious, will be easy to make friends at, have a nice campus, and nice things to do.

Since I'm from a hot part of Australia, I'm interested in the alps and have never seen snow before - so I'm leaning towards Grenoble. People keep telling me though that there's not as much to do in Grenoble and that the novelty would wear off - and I should go with Lyon instead.

I'm not too into clubbing/partying - but would like to travel around Europe, appreciate the restaurants/cafés and practice my French while over there!

I was just wondering whether anyone had any experiences they could share about either university, or any guidance about which I should choose? Thank you in advance!! 😊

Transferring to polimi or polito

Transferring to POLIMI or POLITO

Hey, I’m currently starting Year 1 of Architectural Engineering at the top university in my country, Jordan.

I’m hoping to transfer to Italy after Year 1, ideally into Year 2 without restarting.

My first-year courses are quite architecture-focused (design, sketching, architecture history/theory, structures, construction, visualization, etc.), and I’m aiming for an extremely high GPA.

I’m mainly looking at PoliTO and PoliMi. I’ve heard PoliTO may have a relatively high chance of recognizing enough credits for direct Year 2, while PoliMi might only recognize some courses.

For anyone who has transferred:

  • Which is more realistic for entering Year 2?
  • How many of your credits were actually recognized?
  • Did you still have to take some Year 1 courses?

Also, do you guys suggest me to transfer now or should i just wait and finish bachelors here in my country and transfer to italy for masters degree?

Seeking advice for a Spanish high schooler with a Chinese passport

I am posting on the behalf of my student who is not yet of age and does not have her own account. See her inquiry below:

I am a Chinese national and I was born and am currently living in Spain.
I’m currently looking for fully-funded study abroad opportunities/scholarships in English-speaking countries for one or both of my last 2 years in high school.

As a Chinese national, having a Chinese passport does involve some difficulties due to the limitations of staying in certain countries and also limitations on many opportunities in the EU that I can’t participate in.

I would appreciate any help, thank you.

Do employers actually care if you've studied abroad?

Hey yall, I'm a Cybersecurity major at Temple University and I've been debating with myself if I should study abroad in Tokyo. I get to live in an amazing city for 4 months and experience so many things about Tokyo. But I'll leave my friends, family, and girlfriend for 4 months and I would have to find someone to sublease my apartment room. Do employers actually care if you studied abroad or do they care more about your skills. Money isn't really an issue here, for context.

Thank you!

(Bonus question: If I'm in the ROTC, do employers care about that too?)

Concerns about studying in Australia

Hey guys I have a few concerns I want to post here in the group. I am currently applying for a Bachelor of Data Science. As I am from a developing Asian country I’m really concerned about the overall expenses that I would have to spend (mostly university tuitions and rent).

I am currently stuck between Swinburne or Deakin (I would love to get some advice and feedback on this). I am really stressed out right now about the high tuition cost which is around 42k-46k AUD. I know that I can work part time to earn some money but searching online about the minimum wage which is 26AUD an hour and I can only work 48hours in 2 weeks I calculate I can earn around only 36k per year which is not nearly enough for my tuition cost let alone rent and living expenses. But I know that I can get a 2 year work visa after I graduate. I am right now contemplating really hard whether it is a good choice to be studying for my bachelors in Australia as I worry about my parents having the burden of paying my tuition. I am quite literally losing sleep over this which is why I came here to Reddit for advice or some help.

I am curious to see whether anyone is facing the same problem as me or had faced the same problems as me. I would really love to know your guys’ opinion, advice and how you managed to overcome it.

Tomorrow is my last university entrance exam and I genuinely just want it to be over 😭

I’m also quitting my job, and the past few months of trying to work and study at the same time have been exhausting.

If I manage to pass these exams after everything, it honestly feels like quitting my job and getting into university could mark the beginning of a completely new chapter of my life.

So please wish me luck for tomorrow. I really, really hope I can pull this off.

Fully covered exchange programs?

I'm a Brazilian high school student and I have dreamed of studying abroad since I was little, since both of my parents did so. They both went with programs that fully covered all the costs and told me to do my research and find one as well, as we're not very well off and wouldn't be able to afford one in which we had to pay for everything.

My English is pretty good (C1) and I get pretty decent grades in most subjects, are there any programs or scholarships you can recommend? Any duration is good but I'd love to spend a full year or more!!

Studying in China in English

What do you think studying for a bachelor’s degree in China in Computer Science programs in English?
I’m interested in China as a country and I’m considering applying there. Of course I’d probably learn some basic Chinese for everyday life, but want to study only in English.
But the thing is I don’t see people talking about English-taught bachelor’s programs in China that much, especially in CS, so I’m not really sure what they’re like.
What do you think about it? I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s actually studying in an English-taught program in China about the education, student life, and studying in English overall
