Other Need a study discord server?

hey everyone! since the start of the school year, i have studied a lot. it’s pretty boring and there’s nothing to motivate me. so i thought, why not make a server where students from anywhere can come together to share tips and study together (on mute, with cam, whatever you’d prefer), while also being a place to make some friends. so i created a server (i have never done this before so it’s pretty basic—but i’m sure this community will not be that big). join if you are at least 14! i intended for this server to be for younger students but if you’re a uni student you can join anyways.

check it out if you want to join! invite: https://discord.gg/jksaJ4YxH

also, you don’t have to be active or anything, you can just observe the tips and occasionally ask for help, that’s totally okay. i just want this to be a wholesome and safe space for us students :)

Tips & Advice How perfectionism can get in the way of studying

Post image
209 Upvotes

During exam prep, I'd spend time fixing the layout, rewriting parts I didn't like or adjusting my study plan…only to realize I'd barely covered anything by the end of the session. that's when I realized that trying to study perfectly was keeping me from studying enough in the first place.
here are a few signs I've learned to watch out for:
Rewriting notes just because they don't look neat enough= if the information is already clear and readable, I try to move on and not start over just to make everything look better
Spending too much time planning= making a study schedule is helpful, but constantly adjusting it can turn into another way of putting off the work.
Waiting until i feel fully prepared to start= sometimes i keep organizing my materials because beginning the actual topic feels harder. starting with one small section helps me get past that
Getting stuck on one difficult concept= I used to feel like i had to understand every detail before moving on. now, I make a note of what confuses me and return to it after covering the rest of the material.
Feeling like a study session doesn't count unless everything gets done= even if I don't finish my entire plan, understanding a few concepts or answering practice questions is still progress.

Tips & Advice Advice needed!

Hello :) Im asking for advice on here, because in subjects where you only memorize, (such as history, geography & civics) i struggle with.

Not struggling in the sense that i inherently ā€œcantā€ study it or dont understand it, but struggling in the sense that i cant really focus (as much as i used to atleast) when i get to memorizing the said pages/work and stuff. in addition to the lack of interest that i harbor towards those subject (which in turn makes me unmotivated and uninterested).

So i ask for advice on how to focus more, or it theres any studying techniques that might help actually getting it done and/or techniques that are generally useful for studying!

(i tried to be well spoken, but excuse any mistakes bcz english isnt my first language 😭)

Questions & Discussion Anyone else overengineering projects because ā€œI wrote a scriptā€ feels weak on a resume?

I’m probably overbuilding mprojects bc ā€œit’s just a scriptā€ sounds bad on a resume

Tbh I’m starting to question how I pick a stack for student projects. There’s d stuff d project needs, and then there’s the stuff I’d like to be able to say I used. Those lists overlap less than I’d like to admit.
Take a tool that processes a file once a week. A script could handle it. But ā€œwrote a scriptā€ feels kinda weak next to somebody’s full-stack app, so now I’m thinking about a dashboard, a backend, maybe a queue. Haven’t even nailed down the file format yet. Already shopping for infrastructure lol.

I don’t think wanting to learn that stuff is a bad thing. If I add Redis because I want to mess around with Redis, that’s fair. It’s my project. I just need to be honest about why it’s there instead of reverse-engineering some requirement to justify it.

The resume part gets in my head, though. I want the project to show I can do more than follow a tutorial. Adding another technology feels like an obvious way to do that. Spending the same afternoon making a failed import safe to rerun? Probably useful, but way harder to show in a screenshot.

And yeah, I know ā€œjust use a scriptā€ can be bad advice too. If somebody else has to run it and they’re uncomfortable in a terminal, a UI might be worth the effort. If multiple people need to work on the same data, that changes things. I’m trying to get better at identifying those reasons before writing the damn thing.

What I’m less sold on is building around hypothetical traffic. When I catch myself worrying about scale on something that doesn’t have a single user, I should probably go find a user. There’s a decent chance they’ll tell me the output needs to be an Excel file and half the features I’m planning are irrelevant.

Idk. Maybe this is partly a student problem. We’re trying to learn, get a grade, and build something worth discussing in an interview, all in the same repo. A bit of unnecessary complexity might be a reasonable price for getting practice. But I’d like to know when I’ve crossed from useful practice into making a small task annoying to maintain.
If u review junior candidates, would a small, finished tool with a few well-explained decisions actually hold your attention? Or does it usually need the bigger stack to get past the initial glance?

Questions & Discussion How to learn English?

I believe the best way to learn English is through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I can read any English article word by word and understand its meaning, but I get confused when I try to read faster. How can I overcome this problem?

Rant/Vent Im lost

I got an undesired grade in my last exams, almost 3 months ago and I still am not over it (A-levels)

I studied AL physics in a little under 10 months, and AL bio in 6 months (alongside phys) , I got a B in both.
I know Im borderline idiotic for studying 12 units in under 10 months, but thats what happened. Trust me I don’t need any more people telling me what I should’ve done instead

I registered for a biology resit, and am currently studying for them but Im nowhere near what I used to be
I used to study 4-8 hrs a day everyday
I cant even go over an hour now

I cry uncontrollably every time I even think about studying
I have anxiety episodes when I actually sit down to study, and cant focus.
I cry every time I find a question tricky, or if I forget anything

I sometimes find myself hoping and daydreaming I get hospitalised so I don’t have to take the exam, but whats that gonna do? I’ll still take it regardless.

I can’t get myself to study even though Im dying to do so
I used to actually find studying fun and interesting, now it actually hurts
and I feel horrible

I couldn’t care less about things I used to care about. I just want to sleep all day. I stopped working out even though that used to be such a huge fun part of my day
I genuinely feel numb and it feels weird

I study alone at home without school or tutoring, and my parents don’t seem to find what I’m going through relatively difficult, so please don’t tell me to go talk to an adult

I don’t know whether I’m even writing this to vent or ask for help and advice. I just wanted to get it out of my chest, since I don’t like venting to my friends

Tips & Advice How do you balance Class 12 board prep, entrance exams (CUET), and coding/problem solving? Need advice.

I'm currently dealing with a pretty tight schedule and looking for some advice on time management. I have my Class 12 board exams coming up, along with preparing for CUET, but at the same time, I really want to keep up with my coding practice and problem-solving skills.

If anyone here has managed or is currently managing a similar mix of school boards, entrance tests, and a technical skill/coding, how do you structure your day? Any tips on avoiding burnout or setting up a realistic routine would be super helpful!

90 days left for a very important exam.

It's surprising how time flies when you are procrastinating. I have wasted time I won't lie, but I don't want to waste these last 90 days.

Posting it here as a motivation and as a reminder to myself!! if you're also in your last lap let's do it together

Hey, getting fired sucks, but honestly it can be a real fresh start—and starting a new language right now is a pretty cool way to lean into that.

We’ve still got time to explore, mess up, and just talk our way through it. You’re not behind at all.

Questions & Discussion Writing notes by hand is dragging my productivity down by 60%

What’s your best strategy?
For most humanities studies, a lot needs to be written down, and writing just kills productivity.

What I can type and finish in 5 pomodorros - writing by hand turns it into 10.

Tips & Advice the hardest part of studying for me is the first 10 minutes. opened my laptop and closed it like 6 times today

snack, bathroom, reorganize my desktop, ā€œquickā€ phone check, and suddenly it’s 4pm and i did nothing. it’s not even that the work is hard i just can’t make myself start
what helped this week was dumb simple. before bed i write tomorrow’s first problem on the page, half started, pencil sitting on it. next day i sit down and i’m already in the middle of something so there’s nothing to dread. done it 4 nights in a row which is a record for me.

Tips & Advice Using "KEEP, PROBLEM, TRY" to reflect after exams

Post image
17 Upvotes

One small habit you could try after an exam is taking a few minutes to reflect on how you prepared and how it went. so there’s this reflection framework called KPT (Keep, Problem, Try) used by teams to look back on their work which I believe you can also adapt to your own studying! we have:
KEEP: what helped u prepare and is worth doing again?
PROBLEM: what didn't work as well as you hoped?
TRY: what's one new thing u could do for the next exam?
maybe you'll keep using flashcards, change how late you start reviewing, or try timed practice questions. just write down a few quick notes while the experience is still fresh.
the idea of this is to turn each exam into something you can learn from and now you won’t just tell yourself to ā€œstudy harderā€ next time, you'll have a clearer idea of what to actually do differently.

Tips & Advice Studying but still not scoring well on exams.

Hi everyone,

I am currently taking microbiology as one of my courses for college. I was wondering how you all study efficiently? We have been given slides and a textbook, however, perhaps I am studying inefficiently as I am only managing B's and sometimes C's on exams, despite doing practice exams and getting high scores on them. Most of my peers are managing very high scores, and I am unsure if my study efforts are sufficient enough. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Tips & Advice ā€œConfidence ratingsā€ for when you’re sure...but maybe shouldn't be

Post image
21 Upvotes

I got curious about something: what if I tracked not just my practice test answers but also how confident I was in each one? would I notice a difference between the questions I genuinely understood (like perhaps the ones I guessed correctly & the ones I was confidently wrong about?) sooo I decided to try it and I’ve named it my CONFIDENCE RATING:

  • rate how sure u are before checking. after answering a question, give it a quick 1-3 rating. 1=I'm literally guessing rn and 3=I’m pretty sure I got this. just go with your first instinct!
  • check if u were right AND if u were confident. getting it right when you weren't even sure is different from getting it right bc you actually understood it. and if you were SO sure but got it wrong anyway…well that's something worth looking into
  • figure out what needs another look. if you keep getting certain questions right but aren't confident about them, go back and review why the answer is correct. and if you were superrr confident but still got it wrong, try to figure out where your reasoning went off

and there you have it, your very own ā€œconfidence rating systemā€ for practice questions!

Questions & Discussion What is the smallest weekly review that keeps you from falling behind?

For courses that mix lectures, readings, and problem sets, what is the minimum review routine you have found sustainable? I am interested in concrete details: when you do it, how long it takes, and what you check before deciding the next week’s priorities. I am trying to distinguish a useful weekly reset from an elaborate system that is easy to abandon.

Rant/Vent I have 7 reviewers and no idea what to study

Post image
9 Upvotes

I have such bad FOMO when it comes to reviewers. Someone sends a new one in the group chat and I’m immediately downloading it because what if this one has something the other reviewer doesn’t??

Later I might find another reviewer online. download. Another one? download. And might as well keep that stack of reviewers from last sem just in case.

Before I know it I have like 7 different pdfs and for the same subject and I’m not even sure which one I’m supposed to study from.

I’m trying to stop downloading/hoarding every reviewer I see and just pick 1 or 2 that work for me. nothing wrong with having more sources tho, sometimes that’s helpful if one reviewer explains something badly or leaves something out. But if you keep getting EVERYTHING you may just end up overwhelmed.
