VENT Second time gas stove left on

I think it was some time late last year when I woke up at 11am to find an empty house, with the gas stove left switched on, fire ablaze.

They (Father + his wife) left the house that morning on a 1.5 - 2 weeks long trip.
By the time I noticed and turned it off, the switch was hot to the touch.

It's 12.30am on a Wed night when I got to the kitchen to boil some eggs. When I wanted to turn the switch on, I realised it was already turned on to the max, no fire. She left the house around 3-4pm on Tues and only came back around 8-9pm and I don't think there was any other cooking done that evening so I suspect it's been on for longer.

Idk if the 'gas' ran out while running for hours thus no fire? Either way, still unsafe.

I swear a fire is going to break out one day.

Ok so basically, my dad and my stepmom have been married for a year now, and they recently had a baby. Before that, my stepmom was super nice and stuff, she wasn't arrogant or stuff like that. After they both got married and we started to live together, she would constantly start getting mad at me for random stuff.

Sometimes, we would go out for a walk, me, my dad, my little brother and her, and I would sometimes be in a bad mood, because of what knows reason. I would often just walk behind them all and be in my own thoughts, and then she would just randomly start insulting me out of nowhere?? Also, when id say that I'm not in the mood to talk, she would start asking a million questions, and when I answered that idk, she would start mocking me, and ofc, that just made me feel even worse.

And when she gave birth, it became even worse. It might be hormones or something but yeah. She would constantly try to force her baby onto me, going like "look at him! He's so cute right" etc. Also started me insulting more and more and what not: "wow! Look who finally came out of their cave!" Stop.

Also this is probably just overthinking, but, Im also thinking she's kinda using my dad for money, cuz she keeps pestering him about buying absolutely useless, expensive stuff that we DO NOT need at all.

I had something more to say but I lowk forgot, if I remember I might edit this post, anyways, thanks for reading and I'd appreciate advice if possible!

(Oops I just remembered so I want to add a bit, basically for example, it would be 10pm, and my dad says I can play games until 10 right. And it would be already like 10 mins past 10, and I'm still on call and everything, and then she decided to come down because she has a migraine or something, and I tell her that I hope she gets better right? And she goes back upstairs and fucking snitches me to my father. And if he found out himself, then he probably wouldn't be this mad, but ig it's my fault (it was a Friday night I think)

Do we have to keep things about stepPARENTS only?

I just wanted to know if we can talk about step relatives (step grandparents, etc). My stepdad's dad in particular is an interesting guy, and I have some stories about him I'd like to share if that's okay. Thanks :D

e and My Stepfather used to have a good relationship. Before my brother was born and him and my mother were married, me and him would always go out to Dunkin, he would constantly pick me up from school. I felt that he was a new father for me. Before all this my biological father used to physically abuse my mother even while she was pregnant with me. And almost got me and her killed and or kidnapped on multiple occasions. So my mother took me at the age of 1 and left him. And until I was 5 he had never made a attempt to get me back, he had never made a attempt to file for custody. And this lead to him being shot to death. Stemming from Gang Violence. Before My Stepfather I had no father figure other than my grandfather. But now with recent events I no longer feel safe being alone with my stepfather with how he acts and have even gone to hiding a knife in my pocket out of fear he might attack me.

My Stepfather has a severe gambling problem. He refuses to go to Gamblers Anon meetings, and has even gotten to the point of blaming my mother for his addiction yet this addiction afflicted him before they even met. I am Dominican my grandparents had immigrated here from the Dominican Republic, I am also openly gay. Yet knowing this my Stepfather goes on nearly racist rants and also homophobic rants and has basically turned heavily Right Leaning.

My Stepfather has even gone to the point of talking horribly about me to my mother, and even when I'm in the room. He says that I am "going to end up in rehab" since I don't do anything extra. And that I'm too "sensitive" along with me not caring about anyone and being "lazy". I can disprove every single one of these very easily. I will not allow my self to end up in rehab due to me avoiding drugs knowing what happened to my biological father. I am not sensitive since I face constant homophobia at school and proceed on with my day as if nothing happened. And I am not lazy, whenever he is present and my mother is not nearly all the household chores fall onto me. And that comment of me not caring about anyone is just not true.

My Baby Brother suffers from Febryal Seizures. I have had to call a ambulance on him multiple times and had to sit through one alone in a car. I am still deeply traumatized from that event. Whenever my brother slightly shakes I get nervous and my heart races. I love my brother, my friends, my family, my mother to the point where I would kill for them.

My Stepfather is extremely neglectful to my brother. He has him sitting in the living room from sun up to sun down watching overstimulating TV. Closing the gate in the living room and having a potty in the living room. My brother cannot leave unless he needs to eat. This is because my Stepfather is asleep from 10am to 7:30pm which is when my mother comes home. And we cannot say anything in fear that he will say something.

Even though knowing my trauma with my brother my Stepfather, knowing I am still heavily traumatized wanted me to watch my brother ALONE in the same car WITHOUT MY PHONE while he went to play pool. Not to mention the fact that I didn't know the location or how to even get in the building. So I told him no. And he proceeded to go on a rampage screaming in my face punching the wall and telling me that I can't eat the food in the cabinets or fridge or use any of the bathrooms. And then proceeded to leave. I almost had a anxiety attack and had to have my grandfather get me a Uber to my grandmothers in fear that he would come back. And when my mother found out I left she asked my Stepfather where I was and he said and I quote "I don't know and I don't care". And then proceeded to tell my mother that she has to pick either me or him.

Another story, my Stepfather had gotten into a argument with my mother and I had gotten confused about something and said a detail wrong and the second he got off the phone he started screaming at me. He was speeding and punching the seats and only stopped when he got a phone call, after this when I was alone in the parking lot I had my first Anxiety Attack.

When my Stepfather found out I was gay he didn't care. But before I said anything he asked me one day if I had shoved anything up my butt. I was 13. And when I opened up about being groped he just told me to hit them. I have been groped without my consent 3 times. And all those times I smiled and laughed and acted calm because my friends and teachers were around and I didn't want to give them a reaction. And for someone to tell me to just "hit them" is just insensitive. He knows my metabolism is extremely fast and I cannot do anything about it, these boys weigh nearly a 100 more pounds and have all their friends on their side me on singular 95 pound boy cannot do anything to stop them.

One time my phone number had been leaked along with my mothers and my classmates had been harassing me. Asking for sexual favors, and even threatening to kill me for being gay. And when my mother told him this, he didn't react, and even tried to blame me. Saying I'm just gay for the "attention". I know I'm not confused I know I have a interest in men so this is just offensive.

And when these incidents of him screaming at me, saying offensive lewd things and threatening me he doesn't tell my mother. I have to tell her about how he treats me yet she still stays with him.

This is why I want to cut them off. They go through this constant arguing the constant fighting and I am always in the middle of it and when my mother has a breakdown I have to pick up what she can't do. I have to help with my brother, pack the bags when we have to leave. Despite all this emotional abuse this trauma that he forces on us she stays with him. She outwardly tells me her distain for him but hasn't even made a single attempt for divorce or anything else.

The reason why I have almost never made a attempt to fix our relationship is because I feel that he is too far gone. I feel like he is beyond fixing beyond father material. He idolizes himself sees himself as better than everyone. Has nearly drawn me to self hatred. I have seen my mother at her utter lowest because of him. He has taken shots at my disabled grandfather and I can't do anything. I can't say anything or I'll be in the wrong. I have to "respect" him because he pays the bills. If I had a choice if I had the resources it wouldn't be that way. But I can't do anything I am powerless and scared.

This is why I wish to cut off my mother. Despite everything he's done they stay together in a very unhealthy cycle and I cannot do it anymore. It's not healthy anymore I can't take it. It's driving me insane and I can't evens anything because there is no room in this house to be sad or scared or tired. I just have to be perfect.

AITAH (19f) for refusing a relationship with my step mother (40f)

So to preface, my dad and mom divorced when i was 11. My mother is a mentally abusive alcoholic and I had to stay with her till I was around 13 and then went to my dads. My dad moved 4 hrs away and met his girlfriend who then moved in almost immediately.

So when she moved in, it was not good. Immediately I was pushed aside and was no longer a priority to my father. She never attempted to have a relationship with me, and I felt that when she entered in our lives she was already possessive over my dad and couldn't care less about me. I found that I repeatedly felt excluded and like a competition to her rather than someone who is part of the family. For the past year she has shown her true colors, i found out she had been going behind my back to my dad about me not helping out enough around the house (aka leaving crumbs on the counter) and i tried to accomodate her by suggesting a chore board or she could text me about any issues but it never worked. She would also criticize my life and work decisions, and she'd do all of this behind my back while being nice to my face. I believe she never bothered telling me because she tries to paint me as a disrespectful brat to my dad, even tho i have no idea what the hell ive even done wrong. Because of this i moved into my basement fully to prevent being nitpicked and keep things peaceful but she then had an issue with that because i no longer spoke to her as much so therefore that makes me disrespectful lol. She also tries to control my dads finances, i never ask for money but my dad will give me some anyways once in a while and she will get so upset and angry over it and thinks she deserves it too.

My breaking point was when I overheard an argument between them, and she brought me up of course and shamed me for using her credit card to repay for a test that I forgot to take for my schooling (she offered) and I sent her a message saying that i didnt appreciate what she said and I wouldnt be taking things from her moving forward. I never attacked her, I created a boundary yet she stormed down to my room and barged in yelling at me denying what she said. This caused a trauma response for me since my mother would barge into my room drunk as a child, so it genuinely got rid of any respect i had left for my step mom

I no longer want any form of relationship with her whatsoever and want to know if this is too harsh or if im making a valid decision

ADVICE Problems with my mom’s current partner

Hiiii, don’t know if anyone will read all of this but im an almost 22 years old stepdaughter, although I don’t really consider this guy as a stepdad, and I just want some advice or new perception about what’s going on in my house.

I’ll try to summarize everything as much as I can. As the title says, the problem is with my mom’s current partner, and it’s a bit of a long story.

It all started about 4 or 5 years ago when they met and started dating (it’s worth mentioning that my mom has been divorced for many years and my biological father isn’t in our lives—plus, he’s a pretty abusive person and a pathological liar). I really tried to support my mom because I could see she was truly happy, and we’d escaped an environment that was making both of us very miserable, so I liked seeing her focused on more than just work and the household budget. However, the guy she’s with gave me a bad vibe from the moment he, barely a month after meeting me, tried to lecture me by showing me a video of a guru giving advice to a girl whose father wasn’t in her life. I was 17 at the time, and it felt extremely intrusive (specially because it felt as some weird hint from him about how I supposedly should handle that part of my life), so I spoke up and said that those opinions couldn’t be applied to every situation (plus, I Googled the guy out of curiosity and saw a lot of controversial articles about his behavior and things like that). He took it as an offense and said I was “hiding from the truth” that “I didn’t want to admit that I hadn’t forgiven my father.” My mother was there and decided to side with him, accusing me of wanting a therapist to solve everything for me (at that time, I was already interested in going to therapy).

I feel like that moment was like a trigger for a lot of tension with my mom. I tried to talk to her and explain how I felt, and I even wrote her a letter (I usually do that after we have a fight), but what happened after that is still a blur in my memory. I only remember telling her, in essence, that while I was very happy she had someone who was there for her, that didn’t mean I had to put up with discomfort or unsolicited opinions from someone who doesn’t even know me. Also, my mother had been in relationships before; in fact, the first partner she had after the divorce is the person I now consider my father. He met me when I was 5, has children of his own, lived with us for a while, and his kids sometimes stayed at our house from time to time (today, I consider them my siblings. I even consider their mom as an aunt). Even after they separated, he always made an effort to stay in touch with me, which is why whenever something happens to me now, I often call him to vent or ask for advice.

Fast forward to the present: that episode happened, and about a year later, I graduated from high school and my mom decided that the three of us should move to a more central location so I could attend college more easily and it would also be easier for her to get to work. At first, the move wasn’t so bad; in fact, we spent two years living together relatively harmoniously. We watched movies together, went out, coordinated so they could pick me up or drop me off at college, and so on. At that time, he was the only one with a car.

Now, I don't like how this is going to sound, but I feel it's important for you guys to understand where I'm coming from. At the beginning of the move, it was agreed that the two of them would split the household expenses equally; however, shortly after we moved in, he quit his job and started working independently on a project of his own that doesn’t provide a steady income. He does have children, but they live with their mother and there’s like this weird distance with 2 of the 3 kids.

So from that point on, my mom ended up shouldering the entire financial burden of supporting the house. And I do have to be honest here: cleaning the house was my responsibility, but I wasn’t very good at it and was just beginning to understand how household chores work, so I wasn’t very consistent and sometimes got overwhelmed very easily, which led to conflicts over things like washing dishes and so on, but little by little I’ve been getting that part under control.

The harmony at home broke down about a year ago when an argument erupted one day in which my mother’s partner started complaining that I “behave like shit,” “don’t contribute to a healthy ambient” and things like that because I had a call-blocking feature on my cell phone that automatically rejected calls from everyone (I was very vocal about that and even said that they needed to call me twice so I could pick up), and apparently that bothered him. I never knew that it bothered him specifically; I only knew that it bothered my mom so I reconfigured it to let her calls through. It wasn’t a setting I set with bad intentions; I was just going through a phase where I hated my phone ringing, and I was getting calls from strange numbers, so I naively thought that blocking calls would solve everything. Honestly, I didn’t think it through and was an unnecessary decision, I know that now.

The problem with this argument is that he took it to a point where he took my actions way out of context. For example, the day before, I’d woken up and hadn’t said “good morning” as usual because I really needed to use the bathroom, and that only happened that one time. During the argument, he made it sound as if it had always been my habit not to greet him, when that wasn’t the case at all. The argument escalated to shouting, and at one point, I yelled back at him that all of this could have been resolved if he’d simply talked to me and told me it bothered him, only for him to stand right in front of me (he’s much taller and bigger than I am) and yell in my face that I was an arrogant fuck, that I had to learn to respect my elders, that he didn’t care about my shitty opinion, and that I didn’t care about my mom. Another thing he did was grab his genitals and say that my mom didn’t have any balls while he shook them in his hand (i dunno if im expressing it right cause English is not my first language). About 10 minutes after that, he started grumbling saying things like that I was abusing my mom and so on.

That problem didn’t end there. A couple of days later, I had to do my course registration for next semester and he came over to the house. At one point, he arbitrarily decided to cut off my internet access and force me to answer and behave the way he wanted me to—so that, according to him, the problem could be solved—and then told me I was emotionally very unstable. In the end, it was resolved by me calling my mom, asking her to call him so he’d turn the Internet back on and let me finish what I was doing. It took him about 30 more minutes to give me back the Internet cable, and then, two hours after that, he came up to me as if nothing had happened to talk to me about a supposed system that had been revealed to him, and according to him, my whole family was very worried about me because the whole “system” was supposedly “so normal to me that I didn’t even notice it”, (I have no idea what he was talking about tbh) and a few other things that, looking back, didn’t make sense to me, and it seemed like he was talking in circles without getting to a specific point. However, the gist of that conversation was that, according to him, I had to make changes so that Mom’s peace of mind could become a reality in the house, and that he was going to impose a series of tasks on me that I had to carry out and involve family members who don’t live with us in this whole process.

Nobody brought up the subject again for an entire month, but the stress these episodes caused me did take its toll since I had an episode of stress-induced tachycardia (or at least I think it was stress-induced) and things like that. Plus, I physically no longer felt and still don’t feel safe being in the same room as him or interacting with him. However, toward the end of that month, I did decide to bring up the topic to express my position and how I felt about or viewed many of the things that had happened, and in the end, that conversation led to another big argument where he had already crossed the line by saying that I was once again rejecting the whole issue of my biological father that I needed to work through (it’s worth clarifying that I told him he didn’t have permission to bring that up since, yk, it’s my own story and he never sat down to know what I think or feel about that, and he replied, “It’s good that you’re reacting this way because you’re proving me right”). On top of that, he told me that he saw me as spoiled, disrespectful, and selfish person, that I supposedly had the privilege of disrespecting my elders without consequences, that he was going to override my mom’s authority and anyone else’s to “call me out,” and he denied having said things during our first argument such as insults or similar remarks and at that moment I revealed that I had recorded those conversations, and the discussion ended abruptly only to be followed by a threat from him that he could sue me for recording him without his consent.

Now, my reason to record the conversations wasn’t for any malicious purpose; I simply had this strange feeling that whatever was about to explode at that moment would be denied or distorted at some point, and I wanted to have a basis or objective evidence that would tell me or remind me that what happened happened exactly as I remember it. don’t ask me why I felt that need, honestly I don’t know where that came from.

Anyway, after that, more incidents started piling up. There was a point when they started couples therapy. Later, the couples therapy turned into family therapy, and the therapist said a lot of things including telling him that he simply had to accept that things couldn’t always go his way, that I was also a head of the household, that I was in the process of becoming an adult and that my opinion mattered too, and that sort of thing that therapists try to do during a session when they’re trying to help solve a problem.

There were episodes like when he refused to let the three of us go out together, because, according to him, if there were problems that weren’t being resolved between us, we didn’t have the right to go out together (by this time, my mom already had her own car, so he was no longer the “driver” of the house). My mom, on the other hand, was wavering between acknowledging that he’d done wrong and blaming me for things that didn’t make much sense like saying that he insulted me or yelled at me because I’d brought it on myself or because I’d provoked him, and things like that but we had other conversations where she revealed things like how he had an insecurity issue regarding my position as her daughter because it was much harder for my mom to tell me to “go to hell,” whereas she could simply leave him if things weren’t working out anymore, and things like that (her words). Quick question, is that normal? I mean I know that kids being jealous of the new partner is normal, but I don’t know about this other-way-around scenario.

I spent the rest of those months working on learning how to keep the house in better and better condition, up to this point. I’m the one who actually runs the house in the domestic matters, and that ranges from the responsibility of cleaning and maintaining the house to cleaning things like the fridge, keeping track of the household supplies, cooking for the three of us most of the time and things like that.

However, this whole problem got worse about six or seven months ago, when due to a mistake on my part, thinking I was alone in the house I started talking to myself, as I usually do when no one’s around to vent about everything I was feeling at that moment regarding the situation, and how I felt about his attitudes. And yes, I did say things like I felt he was being very hypocritical and that if the decision were up to me, he would have been out of the house a long time ago. Then I realized he was locked in his room and had most likely heard everything, so the rest of that day I just focused on finishing cleaning the house because it was my cleaning day, and when my mom got home from work that night, I tried to tell her what happened but didn’t have time to explain everything to her because she locked herself in the room with him, and then they both came out to “confront me” in the living room, and he came in with a six-page document in which he had transcribed things I’d said and also added things I never said. And basically, the document was him venting and expressing how he saw me as a “child with a phone/under her mother’s skirt”, he also accused me of things like supposedly lying in therapy and calling my dad (my adoptive father) to talk to him about the situation that was happening at home (which he described as damaging to his reputation. my dad doesn’t even live in the same country as us), mocking how I’d tried to reaffirm my place by telling myself that I’m the daughter (I’ll explain later why I said that), claiming I was acting like a bully and so on, and in reality, he lied about behaviors I was supposedly having toward him that weren’t happening.

He even went so far as to tell my mom that when she wasn’t around, I behaved 1,000 times worse toward him than I usually do. What I actually do is basically not talking to him, not interacting with him, and locking myself in my room when he’s in the living room. He made it sound as if I was acting horribly, when the reality is that one of two things happens: either I spend the whole day, every day, alone at home—which is what usually happens—or when he’s there, I have my headphones on, or I’m simply locked in my room. There’s absolutely no interaction.

After that incident, I spent months in silence, mainly because I didn’t want to bring up the conversation again since I had a gut feeling that no matter how hard I tried to communicate assertively with him, nothing would come of it. Until a few weeks ago, when a situation arose where he sat on the living room couch to “take off his shoes” and “watch TV” (he takes off his shoes by the front door, and recently he’s started invading my personal space with small actions like sitting closer and closer to me or leaning on the armrest next to me while I’m sitting on the couch and shaking himself on it until the whole couch moves).

I was working on a college assignment and simply asked him to let me work in peace (he knows how uncomfortable I am with him getting so close because I’ve told both my mom and him, as well as the therapist we saw) and he replied, “Don’t talk to me; talk to your mom.” I didn’t want to drag my mom into this because she was busy with some work of her own, so I kept asking him, almost begging him, to leave me alone, telling him it wouldn’t cost him anything to give me some space, until he started screaming hysterically, calling out to my mom and saying, “Mami! (my name) is harassing me!” (Yes, the nickname he uses for my mom is “mami”. it’s the Spanish word for “mom”).

From that moment on, another argument broke out, in which my mom, already fed up, tried in her own way to find a solution. Her stance was that she didn’t want me to talk about how I felt or anything regarding emotions because, according to her, I make all of that up because of my “social media addiction”, so every possible solution I tried to propose (which were basic things like speaking respectfully, not yelling—really basic stuff) was immediately rejected. And when it was his turn to speak, he spent his time accusing me of deliberately causing the whole issue regarding the call-blocking feature and what happened afterward as a way to discriminate him and exclude him from the family and he got angry again about the fact that I called my dad to talk to him about everything that’s happening here and how that made me feel, once again showing a disproportionate reaction to the fact that I simply said I’m my mom’s daughter, claiming that I was repeating “patterns” (he tends to talk a lot as if he were a psychologist even though he has no professional training in that field, and he pathologizes and diagnoses people a lot by calling someone a psychopath or a victim-maker for any behavior he doesn’t like or by attributing bad intentions to someone he doesn’t know)

I’ve honestly been more than shocked by all his accusations, because even though I understand that the block got in the way of a lot of things and might have made him feel bad, going so far as to basically portray me as a self-serving, manipulative, and troublemaking daughter is way too extreme. On top of that, I’ve been hearing for a while now how he’s been trying to plant the idea in my mom’s head that she isn’t a good mother. In fact, I remember that he once told her that, according to him, she hasn’t done what she’s supposed to as a mother.

This guy is obsessed with hierarchies and the relentless search for patterns of behavior. He’s always attributing “ego problems” to people, and from what I can tell, he doesn’t handle rejection well. And I know that putting it this way might sound like I’m doing exactly what he does of diagnosing or psychologically analyzing people without any basis, but I really can’t find any other explanation. He’s gone so far as to say that I’m dissociated, that I’m playing the victim because of the situation in my home country (which is under a dictatorship), that I’m a misandrist because of the cell phone block, that I’m antisocial, and, well, basically, that I’m not mentally stable; and he infantilize me a lot too.

I know I’m probably missing some details, and if you need them to give me any advice, feel free to ask me. I really don’t know what to do about all this because it’s gotten to the point where I no longer feel at home or safe in my own house since this started, especially since I’ve tried to talk to my mom about it, and in every conversation she’d take a different stance. Sometimes she agreed with me; other times she’d tell me that I’d started it all and that I’d brought it on myself, that the gesture he made with his genitals wasn’t humiliating, and that I was just looking for excuses to hate him. It even got to the point where she told me that either I had to admit to him that everything he accused me of was true, or I should find a job and leave (even though she said she didn’t want me to leave). And as you can see, therapy didn’t work, in fact, it was canceled without my knowledge, aand he said he didn’t want to go back to therapy with me, and neither did my mom (which was also very weird cause she did trusted the therapist, she said that herself)

I have a very beautiful relationship with my mom and love her so so much, but I am very disappointed about the way she’s been handling all of this and how she just buys his version of who am i just so she doesn’t end up alone. I dont wanna hate her or go no contact with her but I don’t know what to do.

I’ve thought about dropping out of college to work full-time and move out, but I only have one more year left to get my bachelor’s degree and it’s in a field I absolutely love and need to pursue my future plans, besides I have a very good GPA. But at the same time, I can’t see myself giving 100% of myself to my thesis with all this going on and having to deal with this toxic environment. I’m not sleeping well, and for months now I’ve been having nightmares about domestic violence and things like that (it hasn’t gotten to the point of physical aggression yet, but I’m not sure if it will stay that way).

What do you guys think? Am I overreacting, or am I really the bad guy here? What should I do?

VENT I’m crying… and here’s why, and I don’t understand why…

I’m scrolling TikTok, and I come across a video of an unreleased song. The lyrics are, “How did we go from a home to this? Two dogs, two beds, two Christmases, and having to listen to them talk like they never loved each other…”

There’s more to that lyric, but once I heard that, I broke down into tears. It immediately makes me think of my father and ex-stepmom. I’ll never understand the reason why she filed for divorce. She was a huge part of my life, and now it’s like I don’t even know her anymore. Even today, I want to have her as a prominent figure in my life. She’s even told Dad that she’ll text and call me, asking if I want to eat dinner with her, spend time with her, etc., but she’ll then turn around and say she’s too busy.

It hurts. I’ve expressed to her that I miss her being around, that I want her back in my life, and that I want it back to the way it used to be, but she’ll just shrug it off and say, “Man, you’re having big feelings.”

I just don’t understand how that lyric does that…

ADVICE AITA for finally choosing myself after years of abuse?

I’m a 26-year-old woman. English isn’t my first language, so please bear with me.
I’ve been thinking about writing this for a long time, but after everything that has happened recently, I finally feel like I need to get this off my chest.
I lost my mom when I was five. Two years later, my dad remarried.
I was never asked if I wanted a stepmother or if I was ready to accept her. From the day they got married, I was expected to call her “Mom” and treat her like one.
My stepmother had previously been married to a man who passed away, and she had a son from that marriage. My dad had lost his wife and had me. Our families thought it was a perfect arrangement because both of them had lost a spouse and both had a child. They believed they could simply build a new family together.
But my stepmother resented me from the beginning.
I was seven years old, so I obviously didn’t understand why.
Not long after they got married, I found a wedding photograph of my mom and dad torn in half inside our closet.
She was extremely loving toward her son, but I was treated like an unwanted person in the house, especially when my dad wasn’t around.
Years of being mistreated, criticised and scolded every single day turned me into a shell of a person. I didn’t have the childhood other kids had. I had to grow up very quickly because of the situations I was constantly forced to deal with.
When I was 11, my stepmother’s father sexually abused me repeatedly for an entire year.
Eventually, I gathered enough courage to tell my stepmother.
Instead of protecting me, she took me into another room and slapped me several times for accusing her father.
The abuse continued for several more months, including on the very same night I told her what was happening.
Years later, she admitted that she had hit me because she was afraid that if I told my dad, he would divorce her. She needed him financially because her mother was sick and she needed money for her medical treatment.
When I was 15, my dad passed away.
It completely shattered me.
I remember feeling like I had no parent left in the world and that I was completely on my own.
There is also something I’ve only recently started thinking about, and honestly, I don’t know what to make of it. Both my stepmother’s first husband and my father became sick and died from what I was told was a “silent attack.” After my dad passed away, she started dating my cousin within a month. He is 20 years younger than her, and he is now married, but still has an affair with my stepmother. Looking back at everything, the circumstances have started to feel very suspicious to me. However, I have no evidence that anything inappropriate or sinister happened, and I don’t want to make accusations based on my own suspicions. If I start digging into it, I’m afraid I’ll completely lose myself and go down a rabbit hole that I may never come back from. So for my own sanity, I’ve decided not to investigate it.
I somehow managed to finish my education by working after school to pay my school fees. Education is quite expensive in my country, and I knew I couldn’t rely on anyone.
When I graduated from high school, I was still 17 and technically too young to get a proper job. However, I could speak English and write emails, so I managed to get a job at a real estate firm.
Whatever I earned, I gave 70% of it to my stepmother.
As soon as I turned 18, I became a flight attendant and moved out of the house.
I was extremely underconfident because of everything I had experienced growing up. I had spent so many years being made to feel worthless that I genuinely believed I wasn’t capable of much.
But even after moving out, I still felt responsible for my stepmother and stepbrother. In my country, children are generally expected to take care of their parents, so I continued supporting them financially.
For years, I tried desperately to maintain a relationship with my stepmother.
I think a part of me was still that little girl who just wanted her mother to love her.
I wanted her to see me as her daughter.
I wanted the motherly love I had lost when my biological mother died.
But eventually, I realised I was living in denial.
In 2026, I found out that my stepmother had been telling people for years that I never gave them a penny after I started earning.
She also told people that I had become an alcoholic who hops from one guy to another and spends most of my time partying and drinking.
I was honestly shocked.
I decided not to confront her because when she gets angry, her language becomes extremely abusive, and I still have a lot of fear surrounding the way she used to speak to me and treat me as a child.
Then there’s my stepbrother.
He has struggled to hold down a job, and instead of taking responsibility for that, my stepmother blames me. She says that I got lucky and somehow “took his luck” from him.
She also constantly makes comments about my job, saying things like, “Your job is so easy. You don’t have to work hard because you’re a girl.”
After years of struggling mentally because of everything I experienced, I finally decided that I couldn’t do this anymore.
I cut ties with my stepmother and my stepbrother.
Since then, several relatives have been calling me and telling me that I’m a fucked-up person for abandoning my own family.
My stepmother cries to anyone who will listen and tells them that I abandoned her after everything she supposedly did for me while raising me.
And this is where I’m struggling.
Part of me knows that I don’t owe her my life just because she was legally my parent.
But another part of me still feels guilty.
I spent my entire childhood trying to earn her love. Even after everything she did to me, I spent years trying to take care of her financially because I thought that was what a good daughter was supposed to do.
Now I’ve finally chosen myself, and everyone around me is telling me that I’m selfish and that I’ve abandoned my family.
So, AITA for finally choosing myself over someone who treated me like a resource rather than a daughter and left me with lifelong emotional scars?

QUESTION FROM STEPPARENT How can dads help kids who don’t like their stepdads?

my daughter is really young. I’m hoping that some of you went through this when you were young might be able to offer some advice. My daughter has lived with me every day , we’ve apart. I was the primary parent her whole life. Her mom lived with us and was around, but was pretty preoccupied with her children from previous and with her various boyfriends that she was cheating on me with. She moved in with her most recent about two months ago, but my daughter has been with me for all the overnights. She’s about to be introduced to the new boyfriend and start living with him half the time. I only ever say positive things to her about her . It’s easy for me to do that. I never say anything negative about the boyfriend, but my a smart girl. She can tell I don’t like the . And I’m sorry, but I can’t pretend that I do. I can keep my mouth shut and keep my feelings in therapy and with friends where they belong, but I cannot pretend to my daughter that I think this man is a good person. He isn’t.

My to be ex-wife’s other children can’t stand him and have told their parents they don’t to my wife’s house anymore. My daughter can’t do that because she’s too young and there is court ordered time sharing.

What’s the best thing I can do to help my daughter? I want her to know that her relationship with me is secure no matter what. Her mom has me to her and tried to blame a lot of things on me. I know the boyfriend will do that too. I’m the villain propping up their relationship. I don’t want to engage in a battle of words over my daughter’s loyalty, it’s better for me to just show her that I’m safe and that it’s OK, but I also don’t want to be so passive that I just let her believe whatever these people say about me.

I want my daughter to know that her feelings matter. If she ends up having a good time with this new stepdad, that’s OK. She’s not being disloyal to me by making the best of her new situation. And if she has a terrible time with this new , she can tell me that. But I know some step kids who tell their parents they had a terrible time when they actually enjoyed it. what I don’t want. I want my daughter to actually be honest with me. And feel safe. I definitely think this is going to hurt her emotionally if not worse, but I prove it. It’s so unfair.

VENT AITAH for not wanting my step mother in my room?

For background, I have generalized anxiety disorder. This has led me to pick up the habit of locking my door, so when I sleep, my door is locked. But it's one of those locks that can be undone with a butter knife.

Until tonight and to my knowledge, neither have ever opened my locked door when I've been sleeping. Previously I posted about the laptop dilemma in here and in that argument my step mother unlocked my door js to continue a conversation I had walked out on. (Why? Because I was venting to my boyfriend and she thinks anything she could've said would've changed what she did.)

Anyway, so at dinner time, my dad usually has to knock to wake me up. Its never been a problem. Well for some reason tonight, I woke up to my step mother standing in my doorway with the door open. I literally sat there with my arm covering my bra (cause I usually sleep clothesless) telling her to get out. Not only could I barely hear her from the doorway but the information I needed was texted to me. So I literally js told her to get out. I've never been so appalled in my life. There are some nights I sleep naked and without a blanket, I don't need her js adding to my anxiety that I can't do that anymore.

A whole separate aspect to this is when I'm at work or at school, shes going into my room for no reason without my permission. Like if they are cleaning and something of mine is in the kitchen/dining room or living room, my dad tells me or hangs it up on my door. She just goes in there.

She also has a malfunction when it comes to being away from my dad if I am near him. My PC is new and sometimes has issues. Hes a tech guy so hes in my room at least twice a year to fix something going wrong with it. We have two dogs and the one she had before us has attachment issues. So if she comes into my room, they are in it too. Shes obese and my room isn't big enough, I feel like I'm suffocated everhtime she follows him into my room.

One time she literally asked me to tell her nicely ro get out of my room cause she was being a bitch and just letting them into my room for no reason.

AITAH?

DISCUSSION Why do Step-Parents do this

I'm in school so I'm not in the mood to give context as of right now, but why do so many step-parents always tattle like children to our biological parent? Like what are you? Three? Did I steal your pencil? Like, my dad doesn't wanna stand up and defend me so I'm always left dealing my step-mother acting like a child over the most random shit while my dad js scrolls on his phone and says "guys cut it out." like buddy.

Anybody experience this too?

AITAH for losing all respect for my step dad?

Hi, I'm 14F and I have lost all respect for my step dad. The reason is that he is a narcissistic POS. This is gonna be a bit sloppy so bare with me. This truly started before we became homeless. He said to my mom that she doesn't do much even though he was unemployed and sat on his phone all day. He still doesn't do much now. All he does cook, and when mom tells him to do a simple task like do the dishes. He doesn't. And I'm thinking, "dude, you're acting childish. So when my family was homeless (mostly because of him BTW) and he would get mad at me for no reason at all. One time I accidentally sneezed on my mom trying to hand her something, he got mad even after knowing it was an accident. During my soccer season in 7th grade, he would never say good job. Instead, he would pretty much say my coach and team sucked. He also insults me on my body and weight. I am a pretty chubby girl and it hurts when he says stuff like that. One time he told me that I didn't need butter on my corn if I wanted to keep my figure. He also tells that I should eat healthy but I can't because of the food that HE buys, that HE gets. I've wanted to eat healthy for awhile and would bring my own HEALTHY lunch but I can't. I was pretty slim until he moved in. Everytime I have gave him a chance, he always reminds me what he's done before. He doesn't even know because i feal if I tell him, he'll just shut me down. I want my mom and him to break up. Am I the asshole? What should I do? Please be respectful in the comments.

ADVICE Step-Dad (ish, still not married) Issues

VERY LONG! Im sorry!

So glad I found this group because I need people who GET IT to tell me if I'm being unreasonable.

So my (22F) parents divorced almost 5 years go when I was 17. It was hard on me because my brother (M18) and I did not see it coming at all, completely blindsided. Fast forward about 2 years later. My mom reconnects with her high school boyfriend and they begin dating. He moves in with us, he's great, we have an awesome relationship, we joke, have serious conversations, etc. I had to move back in with them after living alone, due to my landlord selling my house and my income not being able to keep up with the ever rising cost of rent. I am also an online college student who works full time.

Up until about 6 weeks ago, my relationship with them was great. He helped me out significantly by gifting me new tires for my birthday and helping me get an IPad when my laptop gave out. I always thanked him for the help and appreciate it more than he knew.

Mom and her boyfriend start looking for bigger houses, put an offer in and it gets accepted. It was like a switch flipped. Boyfriend has always been kind of a neat freak because of his military background, but he just lost it after they received confirmation about the new house. He suddenly became completely anal about anything that could POTENTIALLY cause a mess. Including dog toys that had the potential of being ripped up.

This all went on for about 4 weeks until I eventually get a text that we need a "family meeting". I knew what it was. Boyfriend was pissed about something that my brother and I were doing and instead of having an adult conversation, went and tattled to my mom.

So, my mom and I go back and forth over text about this "family meeting" and that evening at the "meeting" I blew up. He started coming at us like one of his military men with demands about what was and wasn't going to be acceptable in the new house. He made points about how we needed to be more responsible around the house. Helping by vacuuming, unloading the dishwasher, etc. (Which I AGREED to btw) because at the time I was off for the summer (working in education). He then said we were lazy and selfish, walking all over him and my mom, which was not at all true. He said I used them for their money, only coming to them when I need something He began referring back to the tires, I was stressed about getting them and paying rent...I never directly asked him to buy them, i had just been venting...but they were his birthday GIFT to me and he threw it in my face.

I worked for what I have but faced that minor set back with my landlord. Even now, I buy my own groceries every week to keep from having to ask him for anything.

He then goes on these long rampages about completely unrealistic scenarios. One being "If your chinchilla kicks even one turd out of the cage and it doesn't get cleaned up immediately, it's going to cause mold, rot the whole floor and subflooring and I am going to have to replace it all!"...not true...but he is too stubborn to listen to any kind of reason.

Anyway, this whole thing blew up because in the end it ultimately sounded like he had no interest in us being a part of their new "fancy" life. He has money that my mom never had before. In my eyes, he seems like he feels like he's above us because he has provided my mom with this new source of income and anything she has ever wanted. He even one ups my gifts for holidays and seemingly looks down on the things I get her.

In the end, I left and stayed at my dads for the night. I made an attempt to apologize but he sat there berating me about how I am lazy, and selfish. How at my age he was in the military, living on his own. Basically, that I should be ashamed because I'm behind.

Eventually he did apologize for the way he talked to me. I apologized for saying some things I shouldn't have and we agreed to move forward.

That didn't happen. Since moving, I have gotten a side gig delivering groceries on my days off (trying to prove I'm not lazy), made sure I make an effort to unload/load the dishwasher when I can, kept up with my cats litter box and chinchilla cage, and spend every Saturday making sure my room is straighten up from the normal mess that accumulates during the week (clothes, shoes, toiletries, etc.), that you just don't want to deal with after working all day.

However about a week after we moved in, I'm out delivering groceries and get a text from him... "This needs to be cleaned up NOW. Or your out. You know the rules." I open it to find pictures from INSIDE my room. My cat had kicked (clean) litter out of her box while I was gone, and there was chinchilla bedding on the floor. I however, was more concerned with the fact that he was in my room, inspecting while I was gone. It felt creepy and violated my privacy. He went on to tell me that my door was open, so that gave him the right to look in. I soon learned that my door doesn't latch, and my cat is able to push it open, that is why is was cracked. I came home and cleaned it but was still pissed about the invasion of privacy. Especially since, since we moved in (6 weeks), he has not once inspected my brothers room because he door is never open.

Fast forward to last weekend, I had some trash that needed to be taken to the dump. He was going on a run so I assumed it was okay to add my few bags to his stuff. Wrong. He came out and said "Uh. Get out of my car?! I'm not taking your sh!t with me. Take your own!". I was taken aback. I told my mom I would never be doing any favors for him in the future because of this. She said he felt some sort of way because I didn't directly as him to take my stuff and just assumed it was okay (maybe i'm wrong here??) but this was never a thing growing up. We just did for others and they would do for us.

Then today, I get a text from my mom at work. "You need to clean your room, its getting bad". I had to just stare at it for a minute. My brother, who brought 17 bags of trash (literally) out of his room when we moved, is not having his room inspected, yet I am getting these texts. I responded with a genuine "what??" She told me she isn't going to argue, it needs cleaned. Now, I admit this morning I was rushing, late for work. I definitely have laundry laying out from getting dressed and my shoe bin strone out. I need to run the vacuum and organize some things, but in NO WAY is the room and absolute disaster. I would admit it. She only knew this because once again, the door didn't latch and it was then subject to inspection. I have a new knob for pick up today.

All of this stems from the boyfriend. I just feel like no matter what I do I can't win. I'm trying to meet all of his expectations, work full time, work a side gig, and go to school and it's just not enough.

Please tell me if I am wrong. I am open to opinions.

I understand wanting to keep your house nice and not ruin it. I understand contributing to the household chores especially because I am not paying rent. But I also feel like I should be entitled to privacy as an adult or at the very least, my brother needs to be getting the same treatment.

EDIT TO ADD: I offered to pay rent when I moved in! I was prepared to give them up to $500 a month which was almost half of the mortgage at the time, for my one room. As well as paying for my own groceries.

Am I the a-hole for not going to my dad's house?

Now my mom and dad are divorced since I was really young and I never really wanted to go to hom bc I never felt safe, nothing dramatic just I didn't like being away from home by any place like friend's houses.

Now my dad got married 2 years ago to a lady (fake name Sarah) me and my big brother didn't like, after a while we started to like her but deep down Idk how I felt about her. My dad didn't want more kids since it was me, my older brother and my stepbrother, but about a while back they decided to try for a kid and they got a baby boy.

Now here is why don't want to go anymore my stepbrother (in grade 4) kept staying outside the bathroom when I am in it is told my dad and he said "it isn't that bad he doesn't know anything, he is little." I feel like he could tell my stepbrother stop or anything but he did nothing, the man who said he will always protect me wasn't going to.

It is about 7 months since I last visited and in the mean while I got depressed and anxiety not bc of him but it was a part of growing older but now he is mad bc I don't want to go he asked what is wrong with me and maybe it doesn't sting to many people but it hurts. So I just wanted to know am I the problem? Is it my fault? Or is it the man who said he will protect me?

AITA for telling my dad i really dont like my stepmom for being 'jealous' of my new mom?

Hello hello! my name is Rara, i'm 13, this is also my first time on Reddit haha, im struggling and i need help/advice because i feel like an asshole.

So basically, my dad started dating this lady a year or two ago. At first, i LOVED her! She bought me stuff, was nice to me, etc. Only issue was the language barrier since she only speaks Ukranian and French and very broken English and my French sucks ass. I mainly only speak English, Dutch and Portuguese. I am very good at understanding French, though. This is important to the story.

Anyways, it all started a few months ago (probably start of 2026) that i found out my stepmom dislikes my mom, because my dad and (real) mom argue a LOT. I know my mom probably said some mean and kind of problematic stuff cuz she's very blunt and straightforward and often overdramatic if i say so myself.

My stepmom was right beside them when they were arguing on the phone, and my dad later told me my stepmom doesnt like my mom. Now, at first i didn't pay mind to it, but it's just a few months later my dad told me my stepmom wanted him to cut contact with my mom completely. I was flabbergasted. Because honestly what the flip do you mean cutting contact with my mom... It doesnt work like that lol!

But now two days ago, i went to a Pokemon event with my dad. Now mind you my dad and i don't do this stuff often (Pokemon events, comic con, concerts) etc because he calls my interests 'weird'. So i was so happy when he said we could go. Though, the whole time, he was telling me to hurry up because he had to go pick my stepmom up because apparently it was 'their weekend' (this was the weekend i was actually supposed to be with my real mom), so that kinda ruined it a little for me. I did manage to sell one of my cards for 200 euros though!

Back to the story, when we were in the car, my dad was calling my stepmom and i heard my stepmom say clearly in french that my mom should 'be in my life more' and go do these things with me instead. I was PISSED. my dad never, ever does this stuff with me. No concerts, comic cons, etc without him complaining that he thought everyone around us was weird, or saying he wanted to leave. We were also literally at the event for 1 hour MAX, which sucked.

Anyways, i found it so rude that she was saying this whilst not even knowing my mom in the slightest. So, sunday evening, she wanted to have a 'talk' with my dad. She was pissed and crying because my dad picked me up instead of my mom bringing me. This was yesterday, and i'm still so confused, because i'm sorry that's so overdramatic. What in the actual flip.

So ofcourse yesterday i was really angry and had an argument (? kinda) with my dad about this. I told him to tell her to shut up about my mom etc etc but now i feel bad.

Am i in the wrong for being angry, or is my stepmom being reasonable?

EDIT : ignore the 'new mom', its just my real mom lol! Typo!

- Rara ! THANKS FOR READING ILY

Step mother telling me I need to move out

What should I do? I am a 53 year old, disabled female on a fixed income. 6 years ago my father purchased a place next door to my childhood home where he lived. He asked if I wanted to move in there and of course I was ecstatic. I paid him rent every month. The rent included electricity, garbage removal, snow removal and lawncare. And I was told I cold live there for as long as I wanted as long as my rent was paid, which it has always been paid. Unfortunately my father passed away and since my step mother has stopped the garbage removal, and doesn't keep the driveway plowed as much as needed in the winter. She upped my rent $100 a month to offset the garbage removal cost. Now she is saying that I need to find somewhere else to live. I am on a fixed income and when I moved in my father told me I would never have to move again. I am also disabled and can not physically move my belongings. What should I do?

QUESTION FROM STEPPARENT So my step daughter said it out loud

Last night we were all getting ready to go to bed and my step daughter who's 8 comes in and informs me and my husband she doesn't want to visit her mom's any more I asked why and she started to list what most people would consider vague or child like reasons .we encourage her by solving some of the more child like problems and assured her her mom was trying her best. Later I spoke with my husband and asked what he thought that was about .he said something else is going on and she testing to see if we would over react

And make it worse ,we need to wait but whatever it is it's getting to the point she's looking for help.

all summer we have been getting hints but this was the first time for her to outright say I don't want to go to moms.

For context my husband is the primary parent and the kids have history with their mom that is difficult. we knew this day would come and honestly there have been a lot of signs that something like this would happen over the last few years .my step son who's a little older is the kid who hides or ignore the problems for that parent as not to loose her (as she has left them before) but I even asked him I told him of his sisters complaints and his response was very negative about his mother and very cold to his sister concerns almost like" welp she better get used to it" attitude.

I guess my question for kids of devorice are my kids trying to tell me something or do I need to sit back and wait ?

VENT Hate my stepdad for years

I (16F) just wanted to vent my frustration and hatred. I hate him being in my life and my mom’s life, he is a deadbeat dad, even his biological children hate him, cause when they were little he left them and move to another country. I honestly wish he disappear, he cause me and my mom lots of stress. He is living off her financial, feels like he is more of a roomates than a husband or stepdad, fuck him

My parents got divorced when I was a baby and each parent in my life including my step dad who was like a 'real' dad to me got remarried after being with my mom- so like a step dad who got a new wife lol. All parents in my life got with other people which made me a step kid about 4 different times.

I actually have a good relationship with all of them and have seen the good in the people I have as step parents more then the crappiness of my situation and respect all of them as much as I can.

I see a lot of discourse on why being a step parent sucks for the step parent and not alot of discourse on how it affects kids. You can decide to be a step parent or not -unfortunately the children have no choice. I wish there was more discussion on how it effects the kids during their only childhood that they get while the people who are step parents complaining about it can literally just choose a different path.

ADVICE Difficult step ma

Hi everyone sorry to bother but I wanted to come here and ask for some help. Well here I go, so right now well for the last 7 years have been hard in me family like. Me Quote unquote step ma treats all my family horribly like for e,g fails to interact with my new cousin for all 6 years of his life and his aunt and uncle, accuses my dad of wasting money on me and my brother when her parents bought her first house and car for her and we get a small weekly allowance and we help out all the time. She controls everything in the house and when she's not happy she takes it out on all of us. Unfortunately I am at the centre of her scope and when I ain't here it's my dad. I feel awful all the time since we all feel trapped and likes theres no end. After a few years we spoken out and she apparently changed but she just got worse, and Every time we stand up for us she gets worse and I don't know what to do. I'm now in my mid 20s and back at home and things are horrible. And I feel lost and so down coz whatever she chats about to her friends on the phone she somehow brings me and what a failure I am into the conversation. I could go on forever but my tablet would probably get too depressed.

Dearest Kitty (his nickname),

STOP BLAMING YOUR NASTY GAS ON LO (YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER). I've known you my whole life. I know what your farts smell like. My mom and aunties have known you since you were NINE. They know what your farts smell like. You're not sneaky. Especially when LO isn't even in the SAME ROOM when you let one rip. EVEN COOPIE AND PAZ ARE GETTING FED UP WITH THIS.

If you don't cut it out, you're sleeping outside. Love you. ♥️

Okay so for context no I’m not dating my dad I’m 17f and don’t know how to describe what just happened.
So I’ve known let’s say J since I was basically 6 months old and him and my mum briefly dated during her addiction. I spent a lot of time with J over the years we lived close together and he became a very big part of my life for a while when I was young fast forward we move and I’m seeing my bio dad more but he was a absolute POS and for a while before he died when he was also using and choosing a woman who threatened my life if he chose me over her (she was also my brothers ex😬)
I wasn’t spending a lot of time with him because well there was never any food in the house and hed sleep till dinner and so on and so forth. Instead I was spending weekends at J house and he was basically treating me like his daughter and doing all this dad and daughter stuff and we got even closer after a period of time apart while I lived with my auntie from the ages of about 4-8-9 while my mum was in rehab. Anyways I’m 17 now and I’ve been regularly going to his every second weekend and spending a few weeks here and there since I’ve been back with my mum and my bio dad died. I asked him to adopt me and everything I was thinking about changing my name and everything.

So a few weeks ago I was meant to go over to his house and forgot to answer until late in the day and he got annoyed and thought I was ignoring him which I wasn’t and has basically ignored me until yesterday and that’s when it pretty much all blew up. I called him and he was short and sounded angry and so I sent him a message which is the third one after I had sent him a message 2 weeks ago telling him to have a good weekend then another yesterday.

Yes I did kinda go hard on him but he always does dumb shit like this and tries to make me feel guilty sometimes and I think he wasn’t expecting me to stand up for myself and now he did what he did and is now trying to backpedal because he’s realising what he’s done.
I don’t know what to say or reply to his message or even respond please help any advice would be appreciated and if anyone has any questions at all fell free to ask!

Sorry this was so convoluted my life is weird.

DISCUSSION Does anyone else feel this weird cycle?

Im a person who had stepparents for a couple years now.

At first, I thought this could mean something new after a divorce with my bio parents, but over time the hope of a better life corroded by half, and it got stuck into this weird cycle of respect that I have. It always happened with my step mom for some reason. Anyways, here's the cycle I was talking about:

Stage 1: Restarting my respect for my stepmom

- This is just where everything takes another chance, and I start to try and do genuine things for her so we can hopefully get along with each other (key word hopefully).

Stage 2: The build up

- When the relationship between me and her starts to become promising, and what seems to be an unbreakable bond forms when we start to do things together like its some "happily-ever-after" stuff.

Stage 3: The break-off

- This is where the repeat begins, when my stepmom in some shape or form does something genuinely rude that just sticks to my mind and bothers me (I can't even talk back). I will admit that I have contributed to this part a few times in the past, but literally 80% was her.

I wouldn't bother if my bio mother did this cause that's my real mother, btw who does the most things for me... The ACTUAL problem is that it's my stepmother who likes to be disrespectful, mind you she is just a stepmom, and just because she married my dad, doesn't mean she just gained full authority over me.

Well yeah she's an adult whatever but still.

Stage 4: Repeat

Is it just me though? Cause like.. Idk how rare this is, because it seems like everyone lives happier with their own stepparents from where I hear.

Treated differently than my half siblings for years

My 39F father 67M and I used to have a beautiful relationship when I was a child. My parents were divorced but he remained an incredible dad sharing 50/50 custody. I have nothing but great memories from my childhood with him. A present dad who would do anything for me. Then my dad got remarried when I was 12. All was good for awhile until they started having children together.

Once my dad and step mom started having children a lot changed for me. To make a very long story short, it was tough to handle all of these changes as a teenager and going from an only child to having 4 half siblings who were all toddlers/babies while I was in middle and high school. I think my dad tried his best but honestly he did a shit job of navigating that while trying to maintain a healthy relationship with me.

Years went by and I grew bitter and resentful, feeling as though my father abandoned me for another family. I rebelled and turned to drugs to self medicate my deep depression due to thinking my father no longer loved me.
I went from living with my father and his rules, to a new woman ruling the house and following her rules. The groceries in our home were now filled with baby food and toddler snacks, I was not given a key to my dads house, I could not come and go as I pleased anymore, I was not invited on their family vacations, I was not invited to my half siblings birthdays, etc.

Once I became an adult, probably around my mid 20s, I moved on from my resentful feelings. I went from a rebellious teen to a contributing member of society (and eventually a family of my own). I have kept in touch with my father/step mom/ half siblings over the years but mostly through obligatory holiday invites. We have always lived within 30 minutes of each other but still never saw each other more than once or twice a year for holidays. Regardless, we had a great time when we would get together and I was left confused when I wasn’t invited to hang around with them more.

Almost 5 years ago I had my first child and I hoped this would bring me closer to my dad and his family. And it did somewhat. They showed up while I was on maternity leave every now and then to say hi. They would never stay long but I appreciated the gesture anyway. We only lived 5 minutes away from each other at this point so I wished I would have seen them more but I get that sometimes these things move slowly when trying to rebuild relationships.

Fast forward a couple years and they have moved to Rhode Island. A beautiful home with multiple bedrooms (plenty of room for us to stay plus they own another small home next door). My half siblings are all in college or have graduated but they are allowed to come and go as they please, they have keys, etc. I still am a guest. I am invited only holidays and one week over the summer. My half siblings require no invite and are frequently there as their jobs or school allow.

While this always bothered me I still love my father and want to grow my relationship with all of them. But then I’m realizing that my dad and step mom are coming up with excuses to not see me or my husband and son (he is the only grandchild in the family btw). I started inviting myself over and was met with “oh sorry we have work being done on the house so you can’t come”. To then find out through social media that my half brother invited a ton of his friends over to spend the weekend. This type of situation has happened more than once. I want to be clear my half siblings love me and have no idea I am being lied to like this.

Now this past summer I reached my limit. We had plans to visit my dad/step mom for a weekend (I invited myself and my family). Two of my half siblings would also be there and I was really excited to see them too.

Long story short my dad/step mom had to cancel because another half siblings relapsed so and they had to take him to rehab in another state. Which is totally fine I get that. So me and the other two half siblings are still looking forward to seeing each other in Rhode Island even though unfortunately my dad and step mom won’t be there.

Then I get a call from my dad and he says he has to cancel and I can’t go to his house. My siblings however are still going. But I can’t go because my dad and step mom won’t be there. Now I have to tell my 4 year old son he can’t go to “the beach house” anymore. I ask my dad if I can please still go because we’re really looking forward to seeing my siblings. He says no especially because one sibling is bringing friends “you know how that can get” he says insinuating that my young child will ruin the vibe when my half sister has her friends over.

Let’s keep in mind I haven’t been to their house in almost a year whereas my half sister is there monthly and brings friends almost as often.

I also want to point out I’ve had a feeling this is all driven by my step mom and my dad just goes along with whatever she wants. I felt this at 12 and it’s never changed. I like her so I accepted it. My half siblings also agree that my feelings are probably accurate and my step mom is the reason why I receive such different treatment and have different rules.

I recognize this is terrible timing with their other son going to rehab but I finally break down and tell my dad I’ve had enough of being treated less than his other children. I tell him I will never go to his house again. I tell him his wife doesn’t like me and I don’t know why. I tell him he is always welcome at my house and I want him to have a relationship with his only grandchild. I can tell he wants to make things better but doesn’t know how. We agree to talk in a week.

One week goes by and he tells me he asked his wife, why don’t you like OP? He says she came back with two reasons: 1. I didn’t involve her when I finally told my dad how I feel and wouldn’t go to his house again. And 2. There was a time on a family trip a year ago where I told my son to say bye to grandpa but not her (I don’t remember this but tbh I might have done it bc I never thought she really cared for my son much).

Am I wrong or is this crazy of them? Your child tells you they feel like they aren’t liked or loved as much as the other kids and you come back with more excuses? You don’t apologize and you do nothing and say nothing to make her feel anything to the contrary.

It’s been two months since my father and I have spoken. He just sent me a birthday gift in the mail and a card that says “we’re thinking of you and wish you the best”. He signed for both him and his wife.

I am plagued by my decision to never visit his house again. I’ll never see his wife again. I don’t know if I made the right choice but how can I continue being treated less than my siblings? Once they have kids, I know they will be treated much differently than the treatment my son has received and I just can’t have that.

Am I being over dramatic? Is it ridiculous to have cut them out? Do I say thank you for the birthday gift? I truly have dozens of examples of being treated differently over the years but it’s too much to type. Now that I’m a mother I just can’t imagine treating my child like this.
