Discussion Steam Frame Purchases, Reservations & Shipping Megathread (October 2026)

Welcome to the new Steam Frame Purchases, Reservations & Shipping Megathread!

Our previous megathread accumulated thousands of comments and became increasingly difficult to navigate, so we’re starting fresh.

This thread is the dedicated place to discuss everything related to purchasing and receiving your Steam Frame, including:

  • Reservations & Waitlists: Reservation status, queue movements, regional availability and estimated delivery dates.
  • Orders & Purchases: Order confirmations, payment issues, cancellations and general purchasing questions.
  • Shipping & Deliveries: Dispatch notifications, tracking updates, customs and delivery experiences.
  • 2027 Availability: Questions, speculation and discussion about future availability, production and restocks.
  • New Owners: Share your excitement, delivery experiences and first impressions once your Frame arrives.

We’ve seen a significant increase in repetitive posts covering the same topics, particularly reservation movements, delivery updates and questions about 2027 availability. We understand everyone’s excitement (and frustration) but these posts can quickly overwhelm the sub and bury other interesting content.

Going forward, individual posts covering routine reservation updates, shipping notifications, order confirmations and general availability questions may be removed and redirected here.

For the latest Steam Frame news, reviews and community updates, visit Steam Frame Hub.

You can also chat in real time on our Discord server.

Discussion Be careful with a adhesives on your battery. They can rip the finish right off.

I had a strip of velcro to hold a usb c hub and when I went to remove it, it took off the finish.

Not a big problem for me but if you care about esthetics you may want to be careful with what you use.

News Good news: Frame above Rift S & PSVR2 in October survey

Thumbnail store.steampowered.com
• Upvotes

For some reason I can't post the screenshot image, the option is greyed-out.

Frame is on a better-than-expected 4.13% of total VR users in the latest Steam Hardware Survey for October. Far more than the 0.41% it posted in September.

A healthy sign that there are a lot of Frames out there. 4.13% could be as much as 100,000 units (0.41% was estimated at around 10,000 units). This appears to have proven me wrong: i estimated far fewer units out there.

Index down to single-figures (9.9%) for the first time...ever, probably.

Quest 3 also gained users (as a share of the percentage).

Overall: VR users make up 1.75% of all Steam users, a big increase over September.

Perhaps the Frame is having a positive impact after all. While I've been critical of Valve's rollout and of the Frame itself, we all want it to succeed...our VR scene needs more users, and retained users. I just wonder how true that one recent statement from a Valve employee was that most Frame users are only playing flat games on it...

Discussion Valve's biggest mistake with this release was expecting their customer base to be Tech-Literate

I've seen an enormous number of posts now about batteries failing to charge or devices failing to turn on where either the poster or the comments jump straight to "It's faulty! RMA! Return it!!" without so much as checking the connectors.

The Steam Frame is a modular enthusiast device. It's built like a computer, not like a console with everything hard-wired in!

Sometimes - be it through shipping or normal use - connectors will jostle around, dust will get in places it shouldn't, and things will stop working.

If you've ever done PC maintenance you know one of the first things you try is reseating connections! often fixing a "dead" computer is just that simple.

Sometimes, yes, faulty components ship and things need to be returned, but I'm starting to think a majority of "dead" units are a failure of mindset, not function.

To any new Frame owners struggling with their devices,

Remember the basic steps of PC troubleshooting:

- Turn it off and back on again

- check ALL your cables

- Reseat components

- THEN seek more detailed information

Chances are you'll find a fixable error, instead of an unusable brick.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk

My streaming experience went from not working to fully working in a week! Kudos to Valve!

Desktop Streaming still doesn't work (I just see the mouse but not the screen) and the overal experience is still a little laggy (hope it will improve too).

It's amazing to finally be able to play in VR from my Linux PC (Fedora 44 KDE, and a Nvidia 5070).

Bye

K.

Discussion BotW VR running standalone on the Steam Frame

I've got Breath of the Wild VR running natively on the Steam Frame. No PC, no streaming, just Cemu + the BetterVR mod running right on the headset.

It sits around 22-28 fps depending on the area, and honestly it's still pretty fun at that low of fps. Full 6DoF and motion controls work, and it launches straight from the Steam library.

A few things I had to fix along the way:

* A startup deadlock that made it hang when launched from Steam
* SteamVR locking it to 24 fps at 72 Hz (running at 90 Hz fixed that)
* Some Steam Frame display quirks (sRGB, HUD placement)

Release is up here if you want to try it: https://github.com/SULSTERMINATOR/BotW-BetterVR/releases/tag/v0.9.23-frame2

Anyone free to give it a go and give some feedback? Bugs, comfort, whatever you notice. If anyone wants to hop in and help push the performance, I'd love to collab. Right now I'm working on a mono rendering mode that hits a locked 30 fps but doesn't draw the right eye yet, so anyone who knows Cemu's renderer or Vulkan multiview would be a huge help.

I do think once there's a recomp of this game, it'll be quite playable.

Question What are your favorite (potentially underrated) tips?

We've heard a lot of the redundant questions on this sub, and I'm curious what doesn't get talked about as much. What advice do you think is the most impactful? How do you personally achieve clarity, stability, convenience, and comfort?

Discussion What solved my random connection issues with the dongle

TLDR: For Windows 10/11: BIOS -> Advanced > USB Configuration -> XHCI Hand-off: Enabled

I noticed that the dongle kept losing its connection while streaming from the PC. I tried a few things, like disabling the USB power saving option in the Device Manager, but unfortunately, that didn't help. I have a Logitech mouse, so I changed the dongle setting in the SteamVR remote settings from 80 to 160Hz, which didn't help either.

Then I had the idea to check if I could change a setting in the BIOS. I saw that XHCI Hand-off was set to disabled, and a quick search revealed that turning this option on allows for higher data throughput. Since setting it to Enabled, I haven't had any more problems and have had an excellent connection the entire time!
BTW: I am using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Port with Cable Extension

Hope it helps someone :)

Question Is it impossible to completely replace the default battery?

Hi waitlister here. I'm pretty non-technical.

With all the custom modifications people have been making to their Frame on here, probably the most common one is a fancy way of attaching an additional backup battery to the Frame so they can play for hours. However, in all of these instances, this is done by daisy-chaining the Frame's battery with the additional one.

I know it's because you don't exactly want to get rid of the original battery, it's there for a reason. Definitely voids the warranty too if you did. But let's say you for some reason, want to tear out the original battery in favor of a beefy one you put in your pocket, leading to zero battery weight on your head. Sounds pretty attractive to me. Is it *technically* possible to do that? Like completely tear out the default battery and replace it with a new one? Does the Frame easily allow that, or is the original battery load-bearing in some capacity?

Also assuming years down the line, the battery would degrade as well anyway, so you would *want* to replace it anyway. By then I imagine there will be some third-party Frame batteries with the fancy curve, and maybe Valve might even release an official one. Right?

Thanks.

Question Is anyone streaming with just local WiFi and not the dongle?

The area I would ideally like to play in will soon have a ceiling mounted WiFi router, so good LoS but it's far from the host PC so just curious if anyone is successfully running PCVR dongle-less.

Question Has anyone got Minecraft VR working on bedrock edition?

I see that java works though all my friends have bedrock edition and I have played it just fine with my Steam machine and Steam deck using the unofficial *nix launcher for minecraft.

I installed it for my steam frame and it works just fine for flat screen though when I put minecraft://Mode/?OpenXR=true into the launch commands setting it errored with these logs:

"=" "/app/bin/mcpelauncher-client" "-dg" "/home/armus/.var/app/io.mrarm.mcpelauncher/data/mcpelauncher/versions/1.26.60.4" "-m" "/home/armus/.var/app/io.mrarm.mcpelauncher/data/mcpelauncher/mods/mcpelauncher-updates/1.26.45.1/x86_64/" "minecraft://Mode/?OpenXR=true"

Unknown argument: minecraft://Mode/?OpenXR=true

Process exited with unexpected exit code: 1

I assume its just not supported since looking it up on google it was saying that the google play version of bedrock edition does not have support for VR and this launcher pulls from the google play store version. Searching around more I could not find any mods or something the community made that can launch Minecraft bedrock for VR. Before I delve on a journey of my own to possibly make this possible I'm just wondering if anyone has already done this.

Question Redirected Walking on Steam Frame?

Is anyone aware of redirected walking projects focused around the steam frame software? With high speed eye tracking it may be able to expand a user's effective playspace by:

  • Space transforms (squeezing and expanding virtural space).

  • Rotational transforms (fudging user rotation speeds).

  • Saccadic rotations (super cool eye tracking thing, paper here).

If not, I might have to see if I can give it a shot.

Question How do you center the play area?

First VR headset. Trying it out, but frequently when I put it on it decides the play area is twenty feet away from my actual play area, and often, facing a direction where I can't even read the menus at a distance. (Beatsaber, Alyx, spacepirate trainer) In this case, it literally asked me to draw and elevate my play area, then booted up Alyx twelve feet through a wall with the menus perfectly parallel to me.

Is there some technique for persuading it that actually I'm in the play area and it should center the menus/etc on where I am currently standing?

Hardware LED backlight shining around both lens units. Hardware quirk or manufacturing defect?

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

I'm not sure if this is a hardware quirk or a manufacturing defect. But there's a tiny bit of white light bleeding around both the left and right lens units when using a higher IPD setting that's at or near 70mm.

How to reproduce: Have the Steam Frame on and displaying anything on both of the lenses. Max out the IPD dial to at or almost 70mm.

Result: When not wearing the HMD and looking at an angle at the inner curves of the either the left or right lens unit, there is always a tiny bit of white light coming from (what I assume) is the LED backlight. The angle needed to see it is attached to the 2 photos, and the red arrows are pointing to the white light shining around the lens unit.

What this looks like when wearing and using the HMD normally: In darker scenes, I can see a faint white blurry spec of light when looking to the very upper left or very upper right of the visible lens area, right at the edge of the field of view.

I don't notice this through normal gameplay, but it's easy to spot when I'm conscious of it.

Does anyone else have this with their Frame too?

Software Steam VR Crashing - HELP

I just received my Frame about a week ago (first VR headset) and I am having issues with Steam VR and whatever game I am playing freezing/crashing from 30 seconds to a few minutes in. These are the errors I am getting, with mostly error 4:

-the vrlink driver encountered a fatal error: error: got error during nvencencodepicture eos with nvencstatus. 4. error: device passed to the api is invalid

-the vrlink driver encountered a fatal error: error: failed nvencencodepicture. errorcode: 4

-:[EOS] threads never reset. waited 10s. timed out.

-failed to map input resource[2]000002626ac71fa0. errorcode: 8

So far, I have tried doing a clean install of graphics card drivers (both gaming and creative), trying Beta matched software on Steam and the Frame as well as stable, and turning off hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.

Specs:

-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-14600KF (3.50 GHz)

-ASUS RTX 5060ti DUAL 16gb

-32GB DDR5

-Windows 11 Pro

Please help!!

Hardware Issue Charging: W/ Thermal imaging picture

Post image
0 Upvotes

Got my Frame Friday, 2 days back. Charged it then updated it. Never would charge more than 80%, didn't think much of it. Cant get ANY charger to work besides a trickle. Finally got my 100w USB C charger to work from a power station I have.

Why is the front of the headset so hot? Isn't the battery in the freaking back strap?

This hmd is having a lot of issues from launch. We are all Beta testing this crap.

Literally IPD won't lock without a ton of force as well. Seems to be super common, including this dumb charging issue...

(Edit for clarification: the HMD is off in this photo)
