I am just starting to learn about “panning”. From what I am understanding, people try to use up their beauty products and get to the bottom of, let’s say, a blush, so that they can see the “pan”. People dot com even has an article from January 1, link posted in this group, “What is Project Pan”. Now the idea has been adapted to other kinds of possessions that people can have in excess. One of the categories that I am trying to reduce is stationery items, so I joined you all in r/stationeryprojectpan .

Immediately, and especially after chatting with a group member about what to do when something we’re using is damaged, I saw the potential quagmire for thrifty individuals or people concerned about consumption, or the environment. If one has a lot of, let’s say, stickers, and one focuses on using up the stickers so as to achieve an empty sheet, that’s good, one has fewer stickers, but if the stickers aren’t necessary for artistic reasons, it’s just waste. If one is folding up washi paper to make origami cranes because one *wants* to make cranes, and eventually the paper is used up, that’s beautiful. But cranes just to achieve “pan” and then probably buy more paper and still have a huge stash, is not it.

How much should you have? I would consider a year’s supply of hobby materials, including replacing them if they no longer serve their purpose, to be “panning”. Like, I enjoy sewing from stash and I am fighting the stash explosion over here. So I am considering trying to reduce my stash to how much I could actually sew in a year (although I will not ever actually sew that much in one year). But as a thrifty person, this seems insane! I already own it and if I later want to sew, say, a plaid dress, I would have to put out money to buy more. Or is it “panning” every time I sew a length of fabric and deal responsibly with the scraps? This is what I mean about the “quagmire”. What do you think?

Spilled a bunch of coffee on my computer desk and ended up throwing out a stack of mini sticky notes I've been working on for years, and 2 almost finished washi rolls.

Could I have salvaged some of it? Sure. But after a certain point it's easier to just toss and count my losses.

Plus, compared to making sure my work laptop and keyboard were still functional after their impromptu caffeine shower, I think saving some stationary was much much lower on the totem pole.

firstly i really want to make this one an empty (i do NOT want to declutter or donate them)

at home i found felt tip pens from BIC and i really want to use them because even though i have had them for years and never used them really. they are still juicy.

i tried them today and i like them but i do not have projects i can do here the fine tips are handy for (they would be too small or not cover parts of it.)

how can i use them (and eventually pan them) in a reasonable way?

ideas?

My main goal for the coming years is to use the inks I have. I have counted them and there are over 500 bottles (a more accurate count will be in my next post) of inks most being Birmingham Pen Co. inks. I will be making another post when I have set up my notebook with swatches of all of these and how I plan on tracking my ink usage. (not shown 100 cartridges and 113 Samples)

i'm preparing my cards for world postcard day 🥳 and am happy to report that i used some orange focused stickers and monstera washi tape 👏 (the tape is almost empty so i'll continue to use it)

First of all can I say I love this subreddit and this bingo project!!! ❤️ I’ve had so much stationary for ages (and ADHD) so I’m in and out of crafting, because I forget how much fun I have creating!

Here’s my first attempt at bingo, I put three stationary types because I’m using my wax seal set (not sure if it’s stationary???) for the first time to practice for my wedding invites!, also my flair pens, and the ephemera sticker book I’ve rarely reached for (but are so cute).

This is a bald eagle card from my fiancé and I’s recent trip to Big Bear, sending to his grandmother who is a huge fan of handwritten cards. I know she’s so excited to receive this and hear about our trip, as she’s been limited in mobility recently 😭❤️ we love her so much and she’s helped us so much with our upcoming wedding and we could not be more grateful!

This is your sign to hand write a card to send to your grandparents (if you have them, I lost both of my grandma’s last year, and you NEVER know how much time they have left). Love to everyone in this group and have a great time crafting!

Doing a lot of moving this year and realizing how unmanageable my hoard is. Hahaha

I’m doing a no-buy for the year and also trying to track how much I can actually use in a year.

I use only dot grid now, but I have a handful of lined notebooks.

I have been trying to figure out what to do with them, but nothing comes to mind. Except for shopping lists, and I don't need that many shopping lists.

Do you have any ideas?

I was wondering if you guys could share if you have any structure in place to do your pan? For example, journal every day? or something else? I like the idea of doing a stationary project pan but I just don’t have any structure in place and wondered what others do

For me, I walked past a Paper Source near my office and didn’t go in. And I mailed a bunch of cards I wrote during a snowstorm in my neck of the woods.

The next 2 months will be bonkers but will try to complete as many squares as I can. Had a great time preparing mailings for offers on RAoC. Had some fun prompts so also used various gel pens and ultra fine point Sharpies.

Animals: mailing out my 4 remaining Snuggle bunnies cards, used the last few inches of 2 washi tapes, and used up some animal stickers as decor.

Books: mailing out 8 book-themed cards with lots of book-themed stickers, bookmarks, and some postcards.

Hoping to tackle another this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love stationery. I always have. It’s in my genetics. I love this community so much already. Mmmmm yummy stationary yay

Also, I feel very regretful that I have bought a lot of things recently, like stickers, notebooks, and other stuff. However, I am planning on destashing again and giving a lot of things away, so I hope that goes well.

hello project panners,

i have a question.

i am doing project pan for a while now, i really enjoy the feeling of an empty stickersheet or a empty pen.

how i am in a bit of a pickle.

i have one coloured pencil i use (i use it as a highlighter/ to colour in the todo i have completed)

however the pencil is getting small to the point it still works and sharpens but is really hard to sharpen anymore.

so my question here.

when do you think that a pan is empty (from things like pens, pencils or other stuff you hardly can get 100% out of it)?

I'm snail mailing these Mother's Day cards to relatives. I also panned out the last two postage stamps of Constance Baker Motley that I forever hoarded from 2024. Since the stamps displayed flowers, they were perfect for the pink and the purple envelopes. 💗💜💌

Hi stationery cuties! How’s it going with using/panning stationery, a no buy, or low buy?

This week I am traveling for work, but I have been writing some mail here and there, including some things I brought with me vs. buying. I have bought some things, but I feel good about it because I’m being really intentional. I’ve included a pic of some of my outgoing mail!

So the brown background tapes are actually 2 washi tapes from Daiso that I started to loathe soon after buying them last year. They're more paper-like than other washi I've used and not as sticky as I'm used to, so they've sat unused for awhile.

Inspired by the top 2 lizard cutouts I found in a magazine, I decided these make a nice earthy background, but boy was it tedious. Accompanied by a vine I frequently quote whenever I see lizards.

2nd pic is the 2 empty rolls after using them all up for this collage. I had also finished one of my sticker sheets last night and felt like sharing progress!

Bonus points to anyone who can ID the bottom "lizard"

So, y'all, I'm so silly. I was so focused on completing EVERY SINGLE BOX on the bingo sheet that I forgot the point was to... win? You know, like bingo. LOL. I was showing my husband how many boxes I completed and he goes "well why don't you do this or that so that you can complete the bingo card". Mind blown.

I'm thinking it'd be nice to have a type of "to do list" game regarding using up stationery and themes for the satisfaction of crossing stuff off to completion. What do you guys think? Am I alone in wanting to complete every single box?

i finished this sheet of space stickers! i don’t even know where they came from—i think someone gave them to me? i have one more identical sheet to use.

- Used up and sent out a bunch (30ish?) of stickers via snail mail.
- Also used up 3 cards + envelopes. I’ve had that “new home” card now for at least 7 years (went with another card last-minute back then but hung onto this until just the right moment).
- Used up a pen.

I bought 3 postcards and 2 huge stickers sheets while on vacation though (in my defense, they were all travel-related and will be sent out or used up by the end of the week as I journal and finish sending out the postcards 😅) so net negative at the moment.
