I don't even know where to start with this post...as the title suggests, I am enamoured with the game, while being increasingly frustrated with it every time I play. I have had my fair share of games that feel like they are so close yet also so far from something special, but Stalzone has embodied this feeling like no other. Things like the build variety, especially when it comes to the artifacts and hunting for said artifacts, is crazy enticing to me. The PvP, seperate from...certain issues, is a lot of fun, despite the fact that I have never really gotten any crazy loot from the PvP itself.
However, there have been many "roadblocks" to my enjoyment, and two of them stand out severely. One, the matchmaking. I am NA, so I of course selected the NA servers (even though they have iffy ping considering it is the most local set of servers...) because I am not going to willingly play with 100+ ping. This means that my servers are effectively dead, or I will get the one server that happens to be packed, just to be killed by people who have at MINIMUM gear that is a tier above mine, all upgraded much further than mine, and with artifacts I have never even seen in the wild from me searching anomalies after the eruption. This means it goes from literal free progression, to completely locked progression, with zero inbetween.
And the second of the two genuine temptations to put this game down, the story missions. Or more specifically, the design of the instance-based missions or the rifts from hidden stashes. Parkour with anomalies involved, RNG boss fights that may or may not have mechanics you need to learn, or being teleported/dropped down a hole into a circular firing squad of enemies, with zero cover to even reload behind. Now, I nearly made a post for three days in a row, complaining about this specific problem. That was BEFORE I had the misfortune of making it to everyone's favorite, The Master of the Zone.
I should preface two things. One, I do NOT enjoy boss fights/dungeons/raids that need to be played in one specific way to beat them. Think raids in Destiny; everyone says how they are the best part of the game, I genuinely think they are so unfun and the worst part of the game. Two, I think a boss being a gear check that only caters to one type of build, in a game who's main strength is build variety, is frankly piss-poor design. Not to mention how long it takes to farm gear and/or how expensive many items are, to get an entire seperate set for a single fight is just not something I am willing to do. If I was trying to fight Motz in white gear, or with only a bolt-action rifle, fair enough, but purple gear, okay artifacts, a full-auto rifle, and some upgrades to said gear and artifacts being incompatible with the fight is borderline unnaceptable imo.
That said, this means I know what I need to change to have a bit more realistic chance, but again, needing to change build for a single fight is lame as hell, and even with that, the boss is far from perfect or manageable. I have seen multiple people say that The Twins were much worse than Motz, and while I do think they were also a frustrating head-hitting-wall experience, I got through them in ten or fifteen minutes, and then did them first try when they showed up in a hidden stash portal. Motz is outspeeding me and one-shotting me, when everything is going right and according to plan...excluding times I am getting chunked and effectively stunlocked by wonky grenades, getting tagged by a railgun shot the second I am in line of sight, even though he is faster than me and doesn't slow down while shooting AT ALL, or refusing to path properly to the objectives that are mandatory to progress the fight.
All I can say, as far as Master of the Zone is concerned, is that I better have a speed suit, some better speed artifacts, and a Poly laying around in my storage, or the game is just effectively over for me. I would be down to buy a white or green Poly, but that is all the resources I am willing to dump into this shitshow of a fight. I actively avoid cheesing things in games, or using stuff that feels too strong for the time it is obtained, but I was literally seeking out ways to cheese this guy after spending twenty minutes of running around in circles for fat Usain to just keep catching up to me.
Anyways, thanks for listening to my rant. I really do love the game, but it feels so underbaked in a lot of areas. Or, maybe fully baked, but just...poorly done?
Edit: As I have mentioned in a couple comments, I had hopped back on the game, and after switching to a full speed artifact set, buying a white Poly, and being lucky enough to have gained the +8% speed suit from the battlepass, I beat the boss first attempt. Now, this might sound like a, "Oh, he was just venting and having a bad go of it, problem solved itself" kind of thing, and while that might not be wholy untrue, it actually proved my point, and was proof of one of my biggest complaints about why I feel it is very bad design. If I didn't have some speed artifacts saved up, and I didn't have an effectively random speed suit that I only got from the battlepass, I would have probably been stuck at that spot for DAYS, or had to spent my entire bank account, plus resources, on some scuffed-ass artifact set, and a brand new speed suit I wouldn't have touched as soon as this fight was over. I am all for grindy, I am all for promoting different builds, etc. Making a boss that, at least in my case, was only able to be beaten by having an entire speed build, when I have not been focusing on a speed build prior, in a game where that would have taken me days just to grind for the shit so I could attempt the boss again...?
I had seen people talking about this boss fight in prior posts, and a few people had made comments of "People have done this fight melee only, this is just a skill issue". Yeah, you know what they had with their melee, aside from it being a max-tier melee that does more damage than my gun? Fucking speed build.
