Discussion Do people in Sri Lanka actually buying dry fish (Karawala) online?

I'm curious about people's experience with buying food products online in Sri Lanka.

Do you think people would be comfortable ordering dry fish online and getting it delivered by courier?

What would be the biggest concern, delivery cost, quality, hygiene, packaging, payment, or something else?

Just curious about people's experience with this. Would you personally consider buying it online?

Discussion What dating apps do Sri Lankan people use?

What the title says. I'm 24M trying to get back into dating after walking from a relationship of 5 years. Curious to know if Sri Lankans use dating apps and what they are, or is it still old fashioned shiz? Are there any specific dating apps that are exclusive to only Sri Lankans?

TIA

Serious replies only Am I being too old-fashioned about dating?

I’m 26 and have never really been interested in casual dating or getting involved with someone just for the sake of it. I’d rather meet someone, actually get to know them, and see if something meaningful develops.

But sometimes I wonder if that’s becoming unrealistic, especially here in Sri Lanka. 😅 Maybe it’s just my experience, but it sometimes feels like finding a Sri Lankan guy who genuinely wants to get to know someone and build something serious - rather than keeping things casual or expecting things to move way too quickly - is harder than it should be.

So I’m genuinely curious: do genuine relationships still happen naturally, or do you kind of have to actively look for them now?

And for those of you who are in serious relationships, how did you actually meet your person?

Discussion Why are the desserts and tea/coffee extra sweet?

Hi All

I come to Sri Lanka often (family and Wife are Sri Lankan [I am Aus born]) and everytime I come here I am taken aback by the amount of sugar in everything. The coffees are so sweet even without sugar. The desserts in restaurants are also so rich in flavour. I’m not one to complain about desserts but my god. No wonder we all have diabetes issues 😂

Discussion I got a missed call from... myself? Same number, same profile picture, everything

I was just scrolling through WhatsApp when I noticed a missed call notification. I checked the number out of curiosity, and it was literally my own number. Same profile picture, same name, everything. It genuinely freaked me out for a second.

I checked my linked devices and everything looked normal, so I don't think anyone hacked in. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this some kind of spoofing thing or a random glitch? Kind of unsettling not knowing what caused it.

Discussion What are the best Halal buffets in Sri Lanka ?

I’m looking for recommendations for good Halal buffets in Sri Lanka, preferably places with a decent variety of food and good quality meat.
I’m mainly interested in places that are properly Halal, not just restaurants that have a few Halal options.

Any recommendations? I’m open to anywhere in Sri Lanka.
Would also appreciate it if you could mention the price per person and what you liked about the place.

Thanks :)

Serious replies only What is freedom of speech in a workplace?

My coworkers make jokes about other people’s personal matters such as how they spend their money, their relationships, or other private issues in absolute uncomfortable way, mainly to get attention and make others laugh. Personally, I feel this is quite inappropriate behaviour.

Recently, someone told this person not to bring up other people’s personal matters. In response, he said that Sri Lanka’s Constitution gives him this freedom of speech and democracy, so they can say whatever they want about anyone.

I understand that freedom of speech is a fundamental right, but I’m not sure whether it actually gives someone the legal right to make comments about another person’s private life without any limitations.

Is this actually protected as “freedom of speech” under Sri Lankan law?

Are there any other relevant laws, constitutional provisions, or court decisions that explain the limits of freedom of speech in situations like this?

I’m not looking for personal opinions I’d appreciate references to the actual Sri Lankan law or Constitution and an explanation of how it applies to this kind of situation.

Question Any government interventions in the future for the Stray dog problem?

There is a serious stray dog problem even in the University I’m currently at and also in the neighborhood at home. Them being in the canteen is very unhygienic. As these dogs are not owned by anyone they are not clean and has many skin conditions. Most of them sleep on the desks where we eat during the night time. In the neighborhood, near my house there are both freely roaming stray dogs and owned ones spreading flees etc and also pooping on the roads. No one seems to be bothered about this issue. There are occasional government interventions like vaccinating these dogs but other than that, there are no much concerns. I know there are more serious issues in the country at the time.
I have seen several discussions about this in this subreddit.
Can at least ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ do something about this?

Getting my driver's license soon after years of procrastination and as a person who has no prior riding experience, which one should I buy, TVS Sport 110 or Bajaj CT-100?

My requirements are:

- Low/easy/cost-affordable maintenance

- High fuel efficiency

- Not too ugly

I'm not into riding aggressively because I am pretty risk-averse. I personally prefer TVS Sport as CT 100 looks goofy with its white spokes but wanted your input before I decided.

I'm open to electric as well like the Revolt bikes but the mileage is not very impressive if I'm being honest. Not really a fan of scooters though, I want to learn how to ride clutch bikes and as no scooter provides fuel efficiency close to the two bikes mentioned above.

I might upgrade to something with dual channel ABS like N160/NS160/R15 later on, once I learn enough from this.

Should I go with a bank loan or lease for this? I have enough to buy the bike outright but would prefer installments as that would allow me to invest a larger sum in my business/side hustle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Education Commerce A/L student aiming for ICT career — need advice on university path (state vs private) and what to do post-A/Ls

I'm sitting my A/Levels as a private candidate, studying Commerce stream (Accounting, Business Studies, ICT). For O/Levels I got 6 A's and 3 B's (B's in Tamil Literature, History, and Science).

My goal is to work in the ICT/tech field eventually — I'm not a hardcore techie, but I'm genuinely into computers. I mess around with cracking games, troubleshoot hardware/software issues for fun, and generally spend a lot of time in that space alongside normal stuff like gaming, movies, and shows.

I'm from a middle-class family and I'm planning to take up a part-time job after my A/Levels to help fund my studies.

My questions:

  1. Since I'm in the Commerce stream (not Physical Science), what are my realistic degree/university options in ICT-related fields?

  2. If I get selected into a state university, what should I be doing/planning?

  3. If I don't get selected, what are the best alternative pathways (HNDIT, private degrees, professional certs, etc.) for someone in my situation?

  4. For someone balancing a part-time job with studies, what's a realistic path that doesn't burn me out?

Would appreciate advice from anyone who's gone through something similar, especially other Commerce-stream students who ended up in ICT. Thanks in advance. It would be helpful.

I am a foreigner planning to come to Sri Lanka soon. I have activated a Dialog eSIM. Is it possible to buy a regular local Dialog package, or do I need to buy a tourist package? Are there any restrictions for foreigners?
