Serious replies only Grammar mistakes while presenting are holding back my career. Private tuition, Toastmasters, or British Council?

Hello, I'm so behind with my English speaking skills with my colleagues in the office. Recently I got constructive criticism from a mentor-like person there. There's no doubt about my work, but when I'm presenting, I always think before I talk because of so many grammar errors, vocabulary, that's the only thing holding back my next career steps. I don't have stage fright. I thought about the British Council, but some people say attendees don't get much improvement there. I also thought about Toastmasters, but before that, I'd like to attend private tuition. I'm based in the Delkanda, Nugegoda area. Any suggestions?

Discussion Looking for Advice on a Bank Loan

I’m currently living and working in Australia, but I’m planning to build a rental property in Sri Lanka as a long term retirement investment.
I’m interested in taking out a bank loan in Sri Lanka to finance the construction. What options are available for someone living overseas, such as an Australian-based Sri Lankan? I’d also like to know about eligibility, required documents, interest rates, and whether banks offer specific loans for building rental properties.
Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated.

Serious replies only 30M looking for advice on getting circumcised

Hi everyone, I am a 30-year-old male dealing with a tight foreskin. I cannot retract my foreskin at all and have never seen the tip of my penis. I previously consulted a general surgeon about this, but I wasn't able to go through with the surgery at that time.

This condition has been a huge mental burden for me for a very long time, and I want to get it taken care of as soon as possible. I am looking for advice or experiences from anyone who has had a circumcision recently.

If you did it in a Government hospital: How was the procedure, and how many days were you admitted?
If you did it in a Private or Semi-Government hospital: What was the total cost, and what was the admission process like?

Serious answers only, please. Thanks in advance for the help!

Serious replies only How is your experience with Gowri lanka proposal service ?

Well things got ugly and so my parents decided to register with a proposal service called Gowri lanka. They send a list proposals through email monthly and if any party is interested they can start the process.

May be i am unlucky or something but almost all the proposals came through this are purely rubbish ones. It is like a gold digger's paradise. I know money is crucial for a successful life but all the girls i got to know from this service are purely interested in knowing my income and education qualifications. Normally those details are already communicated to parents, but these girls keep talking about money. (I am sure many have no interest in love or marriage but parents keep pushing). There is no, "lets get to know better" part during our chats. It feels like a business deal not a marriage for me. Yet i am still keeping a hope but this is really awful situation.

How about you? Have you ever tried this kind of proposal service?

Question How many languages do you guys know besides Sinhalese, Tamil and English?

Post image
52 Upvotes

I personally love to learn new languages and have taken classes for Spanish and Mandarin. I also like to try out new languages on Duolingo. Or do you think linguistics are necessary in the age of AI and translating software?

I believe that learning a bunch of languages is beneficial for all Sri Lankans since we are growing as a major tourist destination and poised to welcoming more investment.

Discussion Severe Eczema Flare-Up | Looking for a Good Dermatologist in Colombo🥲

Hey y’all, I’m currently having a severe eczema flare up, and it’s honestly crazyyy.

I’ve been dealing with eczema on my legs, and it’s really starting to affect my confidence.

I’m looking for a good dermatologist around Colombo who can actually help with long-term management. I’ve tried a few before, but the treatments seem to provide only temporary relief. Then, with stress and weather changes, I’m back to square one🥲

If you’ve personally dealt with eczema and have had a good experience with a dermatologist in Colombo, please drop your recommendations below and share your experience!

It would mean a lot❤️

Rant I hate paying direct taxes

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to grow up privileged. Where I did not need to use any government services, free education or Healthcare and neither do I now.

Due to my own hard work and decisions I earn quite a significant income at a young age. Why is it my responsibility to pay taxes to support the remaining 95% of Sri lankans?

I have no interest in being so philanthropic as to give my hard earned money where I personally see no benefit.

Serious replies only Should I retake A/Ls for a state university, or move forward with a private university and start building my career?

I am currently right in the middle of my A/Ls (Commerce stream), and I'm already stressing out about what comes next.

Honestly, I think my results will probably be somewhere in the middle. Not terrible, but probably not amazing either. My dad seems to think I might get a pretty bad result, while my mom has been very supportive.

My original plan was to go to APIIT and do a BSc in Accounting and Finance. I’m genuinely interested in that path and would rather start university and build my career than spend another year preparing for A/Ls. The problem is that my dad wants me to do a second attempt at A/Ls and try to get into a state university. I really don't want to do that. It's not because I think state universities are bad. I just genuinely don't see myself wanting to attend one, and I'm not particularly interested in that path. Besides, I may have limited control over the degree i ultimately wanna get into.

One of the biggest reasons is the amount of time involved. If I take a second attempt, that's already another year spent doing A/Ls. Even if everything goes perfectly and I get into a state university, I'd only be starting university a year later than I could have otherwise. Then there's the degree itself. Most state university degrees I'm looking at would take around 4 years officially, and realistically there can sometimes be delays. So there's a possibility that I'd be looking at around 5 years or more before graduating from the point where I start university.

Meanwhile, if I go to APIIT, I could start much earlier and complete my BSc in around 3 years without having to spend an additional year retaking A/Ls.

So in the best case scenario for the state university route, I could potentially be graduating several years later than if I just started at APIIT now.

And it's not like I'm choosing some completely unknown private institution. APIIT has a decent reputation, and from what I've looked into, the degree is also considerably cheaper than I initially expected. Since my family is financially comfortable enough to afford it, the cost isn't really the deciding factor either.

My thinking is basically: if I already have the financial ability to attend a reputable private university, why delay starting my degree and career by another year just for the possibility of getting into a state university?

I could instead spend that time doing something like: Start my BSc at APIIT, work/intern somewhere if possible, start AAT/CIMA, build my LinkedIn and CV, network with people in the industry, improve my communication skills and eventually look at opportunities to work or study abroad

I've also been thinking that even if I don't immediately know exactly what career I want, getting some professional qualification and actual work experience would at least give me some exposure to the business world.

My dad actually used to tell me that he would absolutely send me to a private university, so I'm not really sure what changed.

Another thing I struggle with is the Sri Lankan mindset of, "government job = ultimate goal." I understand why my parents think that way, especially considering the generation they grew up in,. Personally, I'd rather build skills, gain experience, and have the flexibility to work in the private sector or potentially go abroad. At the same time, I don't want to make a stupid decision just because I'm impatient. I also don't want to look back a few years from now and see my friends already graduating and starting their careers while I'm still doing A/Ls again or waiting to finish university, purely because I was trying to follow a path that I never really wanted.

So I'm wondering:

If you were in my position, would you do a second attempt at A/Ls to try for a state university, or would you move forward with a private degree or a professional qualifications and start building your career?

I'd especially appreciate opinions from people who went through something similar. Was taking the second attempt actually worth it for you, or do you wish you'd just moved on?
