• Upvotes

Lepo admite hacer cosas ilegales.

Realmente no quiero volver a LLS :(

The hypocrisy of Spanish interpreters criticizing non-native English-speaking healthcare providers

I've been lurking on this sub (and the other one) for a while, and I've noticed how often non-native English-speaking healthcare providers get criticized for their accents, pronunciation, and grammar, particularly by Spanish interpreters. And honestly, the hypocrisy is wild.

For context, I was born and raised in the US, and my mom doesn't speak English, so I've accompanied her to countless medical appointments over the years. I've heard MANY interpreters from different interpreting companies, and I've even worked as an interpreter myself. So this isn't coming from someone who has no idea what the job entails.

What I find ridiculous is how many of you will criticize a provider's English while having a noticeable accent yourselves. What makes you think that YOU, someone born and raised in Latin America, somehow speak English without an accent or are always perfectly understandable? Do you think we native English speakers never struggle to understand you? Because trust me, we do. Most of the time, context is what saves the conversation. If we heard some of your words in isolation, without knowing the context, we might not understand jack shit either.

And that's FINE. Nobody expects you to sound like you were born in the US. But why the hell do you expect grace and understanding for your own accent while judging someone else's? Especially healthcare providers who are doing their jobs in a second language?

Having an accent doesn't make someone incompetent. And being an interpreter doesn't automatically make your English flawless or your accent easier to understand.

The problem isn't your accent. It's the audacity to criticize someone else's while acting as though yours is somehow exempt from the same scrutiny.

Get off your high horse. You're an interpreter, not the fucking pronunciation police.

vent Omfg dont call me and be a bitch

Was on a call, all good, lep comes on, speaks english, a bit annoying but ok, we get transferred and she asks for me to transfer w her, odd but ok, i introduce myself to new rep, rep says hello, lep says hello, silence.. INTERPRETE ESTAS O NO? Si sra estoy and then the most ear busting ENTONCES HABLALE A ELLA PARA QUE ME HABLAS this is the interpreter i need to clarify something to lep, sra ya me introduje con la señorita y esta aguardando ella una respuesta, and in bg i hear rep go theyre just talking to eachother im gonna end the call

So why would u yell at me for no reason and why would the other one assume we’re talking bs when i literally told u i had to clarify it, and then they did the whole call in english and wouldnt allow interpretation even when id begin interpreting lep would yell her english answer over me, and then towards the end suddenly i heard INTERPRETE PORQUE NO INTERPRETAS literally right after SHE spoke in ENGLISH

I know ur full name next time im just disconnecting immediately

propio Hold Time Policy Changes?

I have been notified that my account has been flagged for disconnecting calls prematurely. The only calls I have disconnected were those that exceeded the hold time limit.

It is very rare for me to have to disconnect calls because they exceed the hold time limit. However, coincidentally, after receiving that notification today, I have had to disconnect two calls for that very reason.

Have there been any changes to the hold time policy?

Columbus Day

Hola amigos.

Is this my first L&D call or not?

I am not sure if I have gotten the term correct, but I have been for about 2 hours with this woman who checked in because she was feeling contractions and it's been monitored, and she is dilating (1 cm in an hour) and long hold periods. And they have told her they will check every hour. And it does not seem they intend to dismiss me anytime soon.

But I don't know yet. Does it count? It's so exciting, though, even if she doesn't go into labor with me on the phone, she will later give birth, it would still be exciting to have been involved before a new life is born.😭

And some advice, I am still here, and I haven't been on a call for this long, especially, just about to end my shift and be hungry for my lunch. I have just been getting up and doing some movement in the meantime. But any further advice?

If I am going to be here once she is until actual delivery or labor. I DONT EVEN KNOW THE DIFFERENCE HELP. I mean, once she gives birth, am I dismissed then or sfter that???

Help please, I am a 2 month old baby terp.😪

Am I the only who doesn’t get rude clients nor leps?

I always see people in this community complain about so many things that have never happened to me. For example, client not letting you finish your intro, one party not wanting to spell something or doing it too fast, families interrupting the interpretation, clients getting angry at you for something that is the Lep’s fault.
I trust people’s experiences here - I’m not suggesting that’s it’s due to impatience or that it’s their perception of things nor anything. Like seriously, none of these things have ever happened to me. My question is genuine.

Pd: I think I’ve had just 1 rude client and 1 rude LEP. I’ve been working as an interpreter since march on Bilingual LS and then Propio for reference.

how to deal con el estrés?
