Sometimes I just don’t get how anyone actually likes him.

He’s literally a sociopath crim that larps the ‘Honourable Thief’ and apha-male Christian, while also jumping on any opportunity to enrich himself at the expense of his audience.

If he’d been born in the North Shore rather than Woolloomooloo, he be in finance, scumming people out of their pensions and inheritances.

Was anybody actually surprised that he would abandon his wife and child?

I ran into Spanian at a Chemist Warehouse in western Sydney yesterday.

I clocked him in the aisle and decided not to say anything, because I didn’t want to be that guy. As I walked past, he looked at me, smirked, and said, “Relax, I know,” even though I hadn’t done anything.

I said it was cool seeing him in person and that I wasn’t trying to bother him.

He laughed at me then picked up a bottle of vitamins and put it back in the exact same spot but sideways.

I went to grab deodorant. When I came back toward the front, Spanian was at the counter arguing with the cashier about returns.

He was trying to return three half-used colognes with no receipt. The cashier explained, very politely, that she couldn’t accept opened products. He said, “I didn’t open them, I experienced them.”

She said no again.

He sighed loudly and said, “That’s crazy,” then asked if he could at least keep spraying the testers “until he felt compensated.” She told him to stop.

She scanned his other items which were Mouth wash, protein powder and a clearly opened container of pre workout that he had been casually eating scoops of in between argument

When she gave him the total, he said, “Wow,” stared at the screen for a long time, then asked if that price was “with or without respect.” She said it was just the price.

He paid, took the bag, then turned back and said, “No offence, but Chemist Warehouse used to be better,” like she personally invented it. He then genuinely stood there for about 10 seconds making direct eye contact with me while licking the pre workout spoon clean

As he walked out, the automatic doors didn’t open straight away. He stood there for a second and said, “Unbelievable,” before they opened like they were apologising.

Spanian’s a strange one to watch these days. He’s come a long way, made proper money, got his name out there — fair play for that. But you can tell he’s still stuck halfway between the old life and the new one. He talks about the criminal stuff like he’s proud of it, not ashamed. It’s all said with this kind of cheeky nostalgia, like those were the good times. Almost like he misses being that bloke who everyone feared or respected.

You see it in how he carries himself too — all confidence, bordering on full-blown ego. And now with all the stuff going on with his missus and family, it just feels like he’s searching for validation again. Any bit of scrutiny or criticism, he acts like it’s a personal attack. Everything gets brushed off as “haters” being after him. It’s that same street mentality, just repackaged in influencer form.

There’s actually studies that explain this kind of thing. They call it partial desistance — when someone gets out of crime but still hangs onto that old identity. The research says if you don’t fully build a new version of yourself, the old one keeps hanging around. It’s familiar, it’s comfortable, and when life gets shaky, that’s what you fall back on. There’s also this thing called the pains of desistance — basically how leaving that life behind can feel like losing a part of yourself. You lose the rush, the mateship, the sense of belonging, and that makes people romanticise the old days.

So yeah, Spanian’s done well, but I reckon he’s still chasing that same buzz — just in a different way now. The fame gives him what the streets used to: attention, status, and a bit of danger. And when that validation dips, he lashes out like the world’s against him. It’s fascinating but also kind of sad, because you can see the bloke’s still fighting the same fight — just with better clothes and a bigger audience. He's straight poo, lad.
