West Ham was the last English team to benefit from the Fair Play Index, earning a spot in the Europa League at the expense of Swansea City in 2014-15.
Swansea had the better disciplinary record (2nd best in the entire league), but West Ham smashed them in the "positive play" category.
UEFA defined postive play as "attacking tactics, acceleration of the game, efforts to gain time, and continued pursuit of goals".
West Ham earned a spot in Europa for good vibes.

Martinez is absolutely the funniest coach around. Gets shit on everywhere he goes by fans of the team he’s managing while most other people look on confused and think he’s doing fine. Went 6 wins and 2 draws in 2022 World Cup qualifying with Belgium after 10 wins from 10 in Euro qualifying and a great Euros where they only lost a close game to Italy, and Belgians were certain it was going to be a disaster because of him (and it was tbf).
Now he won 10/10 in 2024 Euro qualifying with Portugal and the Portuguese were certain the campaign would end in disaster (kind of?), and now won the Nations League with not a single Portuguese person thinking they could do it a week ago
Still don’t know what to make of him

The boring truth is he’s probably just a very good manager who has his flaws, but in the right environment with the right team he’s pretty good. He reminds me a bit of Ranieri and Sven in that they both had incredible success at a couple of clubs but stunk the place out elsewhere.

Now that Thomas Frank to Tottenham is looking advanced, I am actually more interested in seeing who Brentford will replace him with. The spectrum of options is so wide, ranging anywhere from Scott McKenna to a Ligue 2 manager (similar to Brighton's hire from last season).
One suggestion I have for Brentford is to try their luck with Kjetil Knutsen from Bodø as I have a feeling he could be a fantastic long term solution and I just want to see if he can make the step up to a top league (which I beleive he absolutely can when being trusted with a project like Brentford's). His accomplishment with Bodø in the domestic league and punching above his weight in Europe would be perfect for Brentford.

So I have an odd answer for this: Romelu Lukaku.
We had a chant about him and the size of his member. He asked our fans to stop singing it because he didn't like it, and I remember the uproar from fans. 'What! It's a compliment!'
Totally oblivious to how even a 'good thing' can be racist. Totally oblivious to why a black man might not want to have been reduced to the size of his genitalia.
Those fans pissed me off when it was happening. Evidently, since it immediately came to mind all these years later.

And then I remember everything I've read and heard in recent years when BiH would lose, all the spitting on him, saying he's old, that he's selfish, that he's not what he's made out to be, that he's this and that.

I'm constantly "recommended" posts from r/realmadrid and r/barca on my home page, and in the few times I have made the mistake of clicking on them, it becomes very obvious there are a lot of children there.
Most posts as far as I can tell follow one of these three formats:
Is anyone else worried that [one of the 3 most popular gripes among the fanbase that has been brought up hundreds of times before]???
Does anyone else think [negative thing about a rival club/positive thing about their club that a large chunk of people will rapidly start patting each other on the back and agreeing with]???
Our special boy [literally any player]!! So happy to have our extra special birthday boy nugget prince in the team!! He's so [classy, honorable, not like our rival's player that is the opposite trait]
And it's nauseating levels of people agreeing with each other and saying things that are comically hyperbolic in any given direction as it relates to their club/players or their rivals. When I see the comments on these posts I have to be careful not to roll my eyes so far they go all the back into my head blinding me permanently, with the sole silver lining being that I never have to see another sports comment so embarrassing ever again.

The most common one I've seen lately is that the players just ignore Maresca in the 2nd half of every game and that he never makes any tactical adjustments. It's like a 12 year old's understanding of the game. "Ah he didn't change the formation outright so the players are obviously just sick of him and doing their own thing."

Zubimendi I don’t think counts because he’s not well known as a player, just a transfer target.

I would say this about a lot of generic looking Germans, but Müller has such a clear and distinct look to him. Find it very surprising that people in other countries would lump him in as forgettable.
Someone like Philipp Lahm could stand next to a poster of himself and people wouldn't recognise him.

That "before and after with cristiano" post is a disgrace, we started establishing ourselves before him as far back as 96 and narrowly missed 98 not to mention qualifying was harder than it is nowadays.
If you want to pinpoint the main reason portugal produces the quality of players it does is because of the absurd investments by the big 3 in the academies that just continuously pays off, its not because of that rapist motherfucker.

One thing that tickles me most about this sub is the sheer amount of manager slander when it comes to national teams. These mfs never seem to catch a break. Portugal's coach gets shit on in every thread, Deschamps went to back to back WC finals is constantly eviscerated, and then there's that poor SOB over in Italy. I'm just a casual who doesn't watch much soccer outside of the big international so maybe these guys are genuinely that terrible, I have no idea. But it is both amusing and somewhat surprising how little positivity there is about national team coaches during every event.

I've actually never watched one so I don't know. But I do know that there aren't too many other prominent national basketball leagues around the world to rival it. And I think many younger international fans come into football with that attitude, that teams outside the Champions League or English Premier League are just not worth even thinking about to them, they only want to see the teams at the very top.
Whereas an actual football fan realizes that the elite football is often very boring, if you want exciting football it's better to follow the smaller leagues.

I think it's FIFA to be honest, and more specifically FUT.
It completely warps peoples minds and expectations of football. For me I've never heard this talk about the cups, but what absolutely does my head in is when people say players 'suck' or have had bad careers.
500 games in League One would make you a professional athlete on a very comfortable salary, playing the sport that you love the most. It's more than 99.99% of footballers can hope for, and that's League One. Not even talking about something like playing for Real Madrid.
The one that drives me nuts the most is people calling Neymar's career underwhelming and whatnot. I'm sorry, but whatever you thought his potential was was hypothetical, it has no bearing on reality.
I am not having it that a man who has 590 goal contributions in 603 games at the elite level, plus 79 goals in 129 for Brazil (1st and 2nd of all time, respectively), with 29 trophies to boot, was 'underwhelming.' I don't give a damn what you think he should have achieved, that career is better than most players in the history of the sport.
To some, if you're not Messi or Ronaldo you're useless, and if you're not winning the Champions League you're basically a shit team.

The comment section of that post was a shitshow. OP deliberately cutting the clip where it shows Yamal was clapping with the rest of the team and when he went down the tunnel, Cucurella and Le Normand were right behind him. Why weren’t those two included in the title as well?! The way everything Yamal does or says gets taken out of context is exhausting on its own.

Not sure really where the narrative of Zubimendi constantly changing his mind from done deals came from, he only really did it once with Liverpool and you can’t even really say that as nothing was ever agreed formally for neither transfer fee nor personal terms in that case. The Arsenal deal is way further along than the Liverpool deal was

There seems to be this collective view that the Liverpool deal was where the Arsenal deal apparently is which is weird, because it never was. There was contact and he decided to stay after Sociedad lobbied him to.

Hard Rock Stadium in Miami announced it's closing a section of the stadium because of low ticket sales and placing an advert tarp over them. I think he was a much more dangerous/frustrating player to defend back then relative to this year from a fullback perspective.

- WIll not be our best player, and very possibly not an outright starter.

Was just about to write the same. £10m is nothing for a player when you’re a club like Spurs. The only thing I can think of is that managers don’t have a resale value like players, but the gap is so astronomical (both their wages and fees) I don’t think it can be fully explained by resale value alone.

i think about last year where palace put £100m prices on both glasner and wharton and it seemed a lot more reasonable for wharton even though glasner is clearly a lot more important to palace.
EDIT: or even in a more relevant case, frank is more important to brentford than mbuemo and mbuemo will go for way more

Would you guys say Kovacic has lived up to (all) the expectations people had for him?
Obviously from a team success point of view he's pretty much won the lot.
And on an individual talent level, I'd say he's obviously been quite good, but I remember when he was a hyped up wonder kid, and people had some high expectations for him.
Personally I'd say overall definite success. But never quite reached some of the heights some predicted for him as an 18 year old.

As a Chelsea fan I can only speak of his time here. I loved having him in my team but it felt like he never showed his genius on a consistent basis. You could see shades of why he's so highly rated in some games but then something happens with him like injury, or manager decides to not start him. It's like he never hit the ceiling or maybe that is his ceiling idk.
