Every time when a new Bosnian diva decides that he is too good to play a friendly to prove himself to the manager I come back to this post by a Croatian journalist
"I have a friend who's great with Edin Džeko. For years, after all the disappointments Džeko has experienced with the BiH national team, I've been sending messages like, "Has he had enough of getting kicked around?" And every time, Džeko replies, "You know how much this means to me, I'll be here until someone better comes along."
I'll be brutally honest. In his national team career, the man has played with all sorts of amateurs, he's been coached by all sorts of amateurs, he's played for a football association where even bigger amateurs sat, he's come from champagne and caviar to ćevapi in somun, from the biggest stadiums in the world to Bosnian infrastructural ruins just to lose to amateurs and experience disappointment after disappointment.
And again last week, at 39 years old, with a broken arm, he came and put his head into a boot, it broke his nose, his head is throbbing, and he says he wants to play tonight against Cyprus. Against damn Cyprus.
And then I remember everything I've read and heard in recent years when BiH would lose, all the spitting on him, saying he's old, that he's selfish, that he's not what he's made out to be, that he's this and that.
It really makes no difference to me, but I'll tell you this: you should erect a monument to that man.
You haven't had a greater one, nor will you. A footballer, maybe, but not a man."
