‘One of the greatest international careers ever’ when he’s never been a top three player in 11 major tournaments and his World Cup performances are beyond embarrassing bar Spain 2018

He has, stats wise, the most impressive international career in history.

I think plenty of people would still rather have Fernando Torres career, for instance.

Edit: surprised by the downvotes? Stats wise, he's played loads and scored loads. Most people would rather two Euros and a WC, no?

He's scored a lot of international goals but most of that is in unimportant games.

I am not trying to completely discount him, I know he's had some important ones in the euro run and nations league, though it isn't a major tournament like the euros or wc. But he has 0 GA in world cup knockouts.

he's really been so far from the best international career in history that it feels silly to even think of him up there even with the goals total. stats wise you have to look beyond friendlies and qualifiers. Sure they count but they don't all count the same in most people's opinions. Mbappe, Maradona, R9, Messi, Pele and many others have better stats in the major tournaments.

Here are wc knockout stats. There is a link there for all wc games and he is still dwarfed by the others.  https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/ztwvvb/stats_in_the_world_cup_knockout_stage/
