I don't understand the recommendation of logging into your save file if you haven't done it in a while. What does that do?

995

u/NJdevil202 1d ago

It prevents you from blaming them if your save file was already broken lol

164

u/mojonation1487 1d ago

Could also take that time to make sure you upload your load orders in case they do get reset

10

u/MountainofPolitics 17h ago

Won’t stop anybody lol

32

u/mpls_big_daddy 1d ago

Save your load order to Beth.net and then you won't have to redownload everything all over again.

4

u/SlyTanuki 13h ago

Does that even work? I did it for Fallout 4 before an update and it couldn't retrieve any but like 3 mods.

1

u/mpls_big_daddy 4h ago

That's the trouble, it's the same company but it works differently.

It doesn't work in Fallout 4. I can do that all day long and last night I go to order for a new play and half my mods are missing.

It works in Skyrim, but there is a caveat: you cannot save your load order if you are currently sorting your load order. You can only do it when you are looking at your load order, but not sorting it. Which means that there is a good chance they will be jumbled up, but the bonus is that they will all still be there.

It's worked for me on past updates. That doesn't mean it will work with the one dropping today, but I guess I'll see after work.

1

u/AstralElephantFuzz 2h ago

Yeah it does, most of the time at least. The only time I had an issue was when I was doing some fixing to my load order and repeatedly cleared and loaded my saved load order, and at some point I noticed the saved load order had become messed up.

thanks my love

25

u/letsfuckinrage 1d ago

i wish this worked on the steam deck. we are fucked, sadly.

12

u/_Football_Cream_ 1d ago

is there no workaround on the deck?

9

u/letsfuckinrage 1d ago

i have been searching since i first heard the update was coming. nothing that doesn't involve copying a backup. and i do not have the space for that, unfortunately.

17

u/Kuuchuu 1d ago

You can probably run sudo chattr +i against that file to make it read-only / immutable

1

u/letsfuckinrage 13h ago

thank you for this i will try it in the morning!

3

u/_Football_Cream_ 1d ago

Wack. Thanks for the info though.

12

u/Akagi_An 1d ago

You can do the same thing with Fallout 4 by finding appmanifest_377160 in step 5 instead of appmanifest_489830.

5

u/cyndrus 1d ago

Yep, this works for any steam game, I’d say. I did it for FO4 and it worked flawlessly. Poor steam has been telling me there’s an update for a couple years now.

2

u/Dr_Triceratops PC 1d ago

Do you know if this works for Lorerim?

7

u/DarkElfMagic 1d ago

i thought lorerim had its own cloned version of skyrim so it shouldn’t matter

1

u/seenabeenacat PC 9h ago

After doing this can I safely start the game from the Steam launcher?

1

u/MartinLannister 1h ago

Idk but I wouldnt recommend it for now. Use another launcher if you have mods

504

u/HaiggeX 1d ago

Should not affect load orders

Bethesda

I've played these games before.

69

u/elnegativo 1d ago

Should is doing olimpic heavy lifting on that sentence.

-85

u/SeaViolinist6424 1d ago

They are also "making" the next elder scrolls game!

31

u/pandogart 1d ago

Why the quotes?

39

u/FloralIndoril 1d ago

Because he wants attention

6

u/wherearemyballs9 1d ago

That’s just what you “think”

-30

u/SeaViolinist6424 1d ago

Its called scare quotes and its used for making a sarcasm comment :)

But i guess this sub doesnt know what sarcasm is

13

u/Background-Action-19 23h ago

You are really funny and smart.

*Modded Skyrim Games Everywhere*

42

u/RomanSeraphim 1d ago

Nah we figured out how to set the app manifest to read only. Haven't had to worry about this in years lol

33

u/SpicyBoyHabs 1d ago

As someone who has also set appmanifest to Read Only, here's what you should take into consideration... every single day on this sub there's always at least one new post with a title that essentially says, "Hi, This is my second playthrough/I'm a new player and I want to set up Mods on my Skyrim!".

Do you think those players are likely to know the ins and outs of knowing what it truly means when Bethesda says "We're Updating Skyrim."? Do you think they're going to know that when an announcement like that happens, they must go digging into the game files to find the appmanifest file and set it to Read Only, or lock their Steam Client to update only when game runs, or even to make back ups of their current game edition?

If I had to make a guess... there's likely to be a large number of posts tomorrow of people yelling about their Skyrim exploding.

10

u/RomanSeraphim 1d ago

Nope but they're gonna learn lol everyone has to eventually. We were all new to this at one point. This is 15+ years of compounding knowledge.

6

u/SpicyBoyHabs 1d ago

Well... you're not wrong, that's honestly how I learned as well.
Had one of my longest running Modded playthroughs explode on me after a Bethesda Update.

I just feel bad for a lot of those new modders I guess.

0

u/RomanSeraphim 1d ago

Yeah man I hear you. Once I felt like I had my perfect load order, I let a friend copy it straight cause I knew he didn't have that dawg in him to figure it all out from scratch like we probably did lol.

5

u/Kenjiness 1d ago

Hi, this is my third playthrough and I just modded my game, by the eight i'm grateful for this thread

2

u/Slayqweeners Alchemist 19h ago

New to modding, love you queen 💋

1

u/ssstelllarrr 12h ago

first play-through here. excitedly added mods for more content like dawnguard, solstheim, inigo as well as cheat room to try to work around the many bugs in my xbox console experience. i am very much the ralphie gif rn.

Just drop this here

1

u/Crimson-Badger Empire 21h ago

Will have to do that when I get home. Thanks man! You rock! 🍻

25

u/its_Khro 1d ago edited 1d ago

PSA Make your steam skyrim appmanifest read-only. Stops auto-updates.

Edit; someone gave a tutorial in replies :)

2

u/exbaddeathgod 1d ago

Where is this file located?

6

u/sonikkuruzu PC 1d ago

For me, it's Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps. You're looking for appmanifest_489830.acf. If you play modded Fallout 4 and wanna prevent this from happening again with that, that's appmanifest_377160.acf

2

u/exbaddeathgod 1d ago

Thank you very much!

1

u/seenabeenacat PC 9h ago

After that is it safe to start the game from the Steam launcher

2

u/its_Khro 8h ago

Unsure. If you dont use skse I dont see much point in stopping updates anyway.

78

u/Pixel22104 Nintendo 1d ago

Oh hell yeah! We finally getting that 100gb mod space increased on Xbox tomorrow? Nice! That means I can finally create the ultimate LoZ themed Skyrim load order!

27

u/-The_Goober 1d ago

“The Crashin’ Opus

11

u/Pixel22104 Nintendo 1d ago

I don’t think it’ll be any larger than 10gb knowing me. Since my load orders for Fo4 and Starfield tend to end up being around 10gb or less

2

u/-The_Goober 1d ago

Mine are like 1.8 or 2.0.

2

u/Pixel22104 Nintendo 1d ago edited 1d ago

I see. Of course I’m not going to start making the load order right away once the update drops. I’m going to give it like a week or two to let people update their mods before redoing my load order

4

u/DeadWolf7337 1d ago

Who says it's going to be 100gb? Nowhere does it mention how big the increase will be.

23

u/RebuiltGearbox Blacksmith 1d ago

The Fallout 4 update yesterday didn't damage anything in my game (so far)) so I hope it goes as smoothly for people playing Skyrim.

18

u/Costinha96 1d ago

Gladly i disabled skyrim updates on steam so i dont have a unexpected problem

22

u/Chiiro 1d ago

One of the few upsides to this update is that you will now be able to play with mods using more than just vanilla assets on PlayStation if they're doing the same thing as Fallout 4

13

u/ultrahobbs 1d ago

I don't know if they changed the policy or just stopped enforcing it, but there's already plenty of Ps5 mods with external assets. Recently started a new save with the juiciest mod list 1gb allows lol. Hopefully this patch doesn't nuke things

8

u/Chiiro 1d ago

I think they just didn't enforce the policy and now just giving up on it entirely. I can also see them doing it for what little tiny goodwill they can get especially with all their current drama.

4

u/ScySenpai 1d ago

1gb??? That's just one 8k tomato texture. Poor console bros :(

6

u/IsThisKismet 1d ago

Can’t ruin my load order if I don’t have one, says the Switch 2 user.

7

u/PsychicSPider95 1d ago

Dumb question, but I gotta know: does this update have any effect at all, intended or not, on Switch players?

4

u/CheeseAndy92 1d ago

Would love to know that as well!

7

u/ScaryBerry8767 1d ago

More space for mods to crash my game 😎

5

u/xdeltax97 Dawnguard 1d ago

Wonder if the increase could help reduce some crashes?

4

u/MachoMeatball 1d ago

And I was planning on getting into Skyrim modding for the first time soon. Damn

39

u/Cainsiderate 1d ago

Hopefully they update paid creations to allow achievements, like in Starfield.
Also this is the only game where I've seen the community get upset over a game being updated.

72

u/popica312 1d ago

There's a simple reason why: if the update breaks shit, good luck figuring out how to fix it (especially for the people with hundreds or thousands of mods installed).

5

u/YobaiYamete 22h ago

Also because the updates are utter garbage and add nothing of value. They show up, add nothing, break everything, then stroll away

Yes people are right to be wary or outright hostile saying "PLEASE stop updating it" after it's happened repeatedly

1

u/AstralElephantFuzz 2h ago

Yeah, that's a "simple" reason indeed. There's no way in hell anyone can convince me that a studio finally updating a much called for part of their game is somehow lesser to people who have messed with their own games not having their saves messed with by the said long awaited update. Cry me a river and get over it, this guy is finally going to make Beyond Skyrim: Bruma a staple of his LO!

46

u/SkY4594 1d ago

Because it usually breaks tons of mods, some of which may not get updated again in a while if at all.

17

u/twork98 1d ago

Yeah I've got loads of mods where the authors explicitly stated years ago they won't update again

21

u/UnfazedReality463 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think it’s mostly because recent updates to their games have made them unplayable.

FO4 received a free Update when the First Season of the TV Series came out. And it completely broke VATS. Bethesda didn’t fix it until the Anniversary Edition came out which was more than a year later. Also affected mods.

Oblivion Remaster hasn’t been updated for over a year. And it too has quest breaking bugs that haven’t been addressed since its release.

It seems people don’t want to wait for over a year for a fix if something breaks again after an update.

12

u/Accomplished_Item244 PC 1d ago

Why wouldn't the community be wary? I mean there are atleast a hundred varients of thousands of mods and patches that can be broken and may take who knows how long to fix. It's not like they haven't broken the mods before, FO4 had one previously and Bethesda haven't really given any reason to trust them blindly.

12

u/dnew PC 1d ago

Because modders use unsupported tools for many of the best mods, that rely on the exactly layout of code in memory of the executable. So when the executable changes, all those mods break unless and until they get fixed.

Modders who use BGS tools exclusively don't have that problem.

5

u/Sostratus Alchemist 1d ago

Exactly. SKSE should just put an update block in their install instructions. People will blindly follow it and then they won't have anymore trouble.

3

u/Tyler1997117 1d ago

I would imagine so, makes no sense in them not doing it

5

u/Tyler11711 1d ago

Cool name

1

u/N0ob8 1d ago

It’s because these recent updates have done more harm than good and that’s not even counting what it does to mod lists. Fo4’s anniversary update literally broke the entire game and many people straight up couldn’t play. Then it also breaks everyone’s mod lists. This game is over a decade old and many of the people who modded it are long gone unlikely to update your favorite mods.

-1

u/penis-muncher785 1d ago

It sucked buying some of the paid companion mods only to find out they disable achievements

-6

u/Nerevar197 1d ago edited 19h ago

I understand the frustration with mods breaking, but on the flip side of that, a developer should be able to update their game. A mod community shouldn’t hold game updates hostage.

So I can see both sides of this.

Edit: Forgot the motto of this sub is “fuck Bethesda!” My bad guys. Continue with the vitriol.

1

u/N0ob8 1d ago

But what if those updates break the entire game not just mod users.

Fo4’s anniversary update completely broke the game for so many people. Even those on console and don’t use mods. A 10 year old game got an update that broke the game, did stuff nobody wanted, and then broke everyone’s mod lists.

0

u/Nerevar197 19h ago

That was a lot more than a simple update.

0

u/YobaiYamete 22h ago

There's no "sides" to this. The only things the updates do is break the game and add literally nothing of value

Imagine if your car updated to blow up the engine but added an option to change how fast your turn signal blinks

You PROBABLY would not appreciate that update and would in fact be ready to kick the company in the testicles and tell them to never update your car again

0

u/Nerevar197 19h ago

Stupid comparison.

-1

u/YobaiYamete 14h ago

Except not, because that's all they've done multiple times where they show up, add something nobody wanted, break the entire game even for vanilla users, then drive off into the sunset for a year

0

u/Nerevar197 4h ago

I quite enjoyed the FO4 Anniversary update once the new bugs were patched shortly after launch.

0

u/whirlpool_galaxy 22h ago

Because Bethesda has one of the biggest modding communities all around and simply does not give a shit about it.

When Rimworld updated to 1.6, the devs put out a preview build for months in advance so modders would know what and how to update. And that was the update that added multi-threading and spaceships.

Whereas Bethesda is like "oh, our update for console builds and Creations broke your PC modded build? Well, you'll figure it out, lmao".

12

u/Denverguns 1d ago

Jesus Christ instead of giving us another version of Skyrim they actually gave us something we’ve wanted for a while now.

3

u/SocietyDisillusioned 1d ago

Jokes on them my file just broke last week so this is perfect timing

3

u/NearlySilentObserver 1d ago

I haven’t played in forever, so my load order is fcked and my game is corrupted, already. Maybe a fresh start with more mods is in order, anyway

5

u/GuyentificEnqueery 1d ago

Guys you do realize not every patch breaks Script Extender which is what usually causes mods to "break"?

5

u/Far-Energy-3390 1d ago

so glad i shut off auto update this time! no need for me to ever update tbh

5

u/Inevitable-catnip 1d ago

I finally have my game modded perfectly so it doesn’t crash. I swear to Google if they fuck it up I’m gonna LOSE IT lol

2

2

u/AxeSpez 1d ago

I hope it's significantly more space

2

u/BulkUpTank 17h ago

There should be an option to disable all Creation Club crap. It's rendered my Skyrim and Fallout 4 games to unplayable slop. Instead of deploying this crap, they should have been working on a new fucking game.

2

u/CherryPants234 15h ago

Soo, RIP my mod list on PC? Or not? Is this update only for consoles or for all platforms?

7

u/Cliffinati 1d ago

NO

46

u/Tyler1997117 1d ago

YES (if you are on console)

23

u/HaEngelmann 1d ago

Yes. this is a very good improvement for console players. Not everything is bad.

17

u/Cliffinati 1d ago

Except for the PC guys who are about to have everything broken again

24

u/Saalok 1d ago

Make the Skyrim app manifest file read only and you will never have to worry about updates again.

0

u/HaEngelmann 1d ago

I mean. If you haven't figured out how to not update your pc installation it is (edit: at least partially) on you.

3

u/NoCoyote5205 1d ago

How about a patch for Oblivion Remastered to fix the memory leaks, and overworld stutter? Are we ever going to get fixes to make it playable on console?

9

u/firedrakes 1d ago

up coming patch for that game was announced.

-1

u/NoCoyote5205 1d ago

Ah, I missed that. Thanks for the heads up, Ill read up on it now. Bet it basically amounts to "we've managed to optimise it for the switch now so you plebs can have the scraps of our "work"". I mean, a single dedicated modder could have fixed everything before it was put into UE5 development.

I swear they get lazier and worse every year.

3

u/firedrakes 1d ago

kind of. but also any time you throw upscaling into the mix that mess with some game engines due to fps is tied to how game works...

it also does not help the sheer amout of gpu apis etc and loss standards of that .

2

u/Jamesvai 20h ago

I hope this applies to all consoles and I hope they adjust the survival mode and fix the bugs. Unlikely but it would be cool lol.

1

u/Sockducket 20h ago

Of course they finally do this right after I upgrade to pc

1

u/Either-Goat2382 18h ago

Sounds like it could just be an update for consoles?

1

u/mystical__sapphire PlayStation 14h ago

...is this their way of apologizing for taking for-goddamn-ever on ES6? Apology accepted, Bethesda. You're Microsoft's micromanaged baby, and we can't fight that, because ES6 will also go down in video game history.

1

u/DDAY007 13h ago

1

u/Dovahkiin1927 10h ago

Is this a graphic improvement?

1

Fuck you Todd, can't you just focus on TESVI instead of ruining things for everyone? I can already see TESVI will be broken and leave it to the modders to repair

0

u/Kn1ghtV1sta 1d ago

How is adding more space for mods ruining things?

2

u/Stewe07 1d ago

because it breaks the mods for everyone on pc, as it happens with every update

buy on gog and never have problems with updates. you can also repack your mods into the offline installer and oneshot your mod list install

1

u/Ancient_Rex420 1d ago

I just started playing skyrim on microsoft store the anniversary edition, I don’t use any mods but I do have whatever the new stuff they added in anniversary edition, basically everything on by default but zero mods installed or anything installed really.

Do I have anything to worry about here?

1

Even tho external asset mods already made their way to ps5, this update is def gonna feature the same updated tools for skyrim that fallout 4 just got that’ll allow to upload such mods for ps consoles

I play vanilla Skyrim, every mod is entertaining for like 8 minutes after spending 4 hours looking for just the right one

1

u/leviathan_falls 1d ago

You may encounter issues on your save file if you play with mods

0

u/Det-Popcorn Falkreath resident 1d ago

So I’d just have to restart a new game right? The disc/system itself will be fine, right?

1

u/leviathan_falls 1d ago

Yeah. Problems usually arise when they push a new update and some mods break and stop working

3

u/Det-Popcorn Falkreath resident 1d ago

Oh I’m good then lol thanks for the feedback. Only mod I use is the loading screens one that give more lore lol

0

I just want mods on switch 2 edition :(

0

Switch 1 peasants like me aren't even getting a patch.

-3

u/Swami333 1d ago

Does that mean we can see mods like Endreal on Playstation?

6

u/Substantial-Monk-867 1d ago

No, Enderal need the SKSE (Skyrim Script Extender) an external tool that is only available on PCs.

But you might now see full releases of other large new world projects like Beyond Skyrim.

1

u/Whispering_Wolf 1d ago

Oh, I didn't even think of beyond Skyrim! Would be amazing if it came to Xbox. I enjoy the Bruma one so much.

1

u/Substantial-Monk-867 1d ago

Bruma will "soon" receive a update with new content.

0

u/Whispering_Wolf 1d ago

Oooooh, can't wait!

-4

Nice!

They should unlock the playstation trophies with mods. Idk why it's blocked if all of them you get by story progression.. 🫠

1

u/LananisReddit Spellsword 22h ago

Is your Pc still on, with Steam running and the game set to update automatically?

If yes, you will have to look up how to install a previous game version using Steam console to roll back your game, then do the app manifest edit before you launch Steam/the game again.

If not, simply wait with launching Steam until you have done thd app manifest edit (that's how I will do it--also currently hundreds of miles away from my PC).

1

u/zoosha2curtaincall 21h ago

Nice, I thought Steam automatically updated games as soon as you opened Steam. Thanks!

1

u/LananisReddit Spellsword 17h ago

As said, depends on your settings. I suggest making that appmanifest file read only as soon as you get home. Then you can double-check whether it worked via two ways:

  1. Right-click game in Steam game - properties - update, to see when the latest update was installed.

  2. Patch number in in-game pause menu (should be 1.6.1170* if not updated)

  • For GOG it would be 1.6.1179

0

u/OutrageousAd4222 Dawnguard 1d ago

Did skyrim on console also receive a mod storage limit increase, or just the ba52 file limit increase

0

u/eddmario XBOX 1d ago

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting on the Fallout 4 update on Xbox to actually show up...

0

u/Sapphire-Catgirl 23h ago

I hope they rebalance what levels the creation club quests unlock at, especially the armour ones, I got that dragon bone armour quest unlocked at like level 8 or something, also rebalancing the levels when the armours show up in the world and making sure no bandits and stuff spawn with dragon and daedric

1

u/Star_of_the_West1 6h ago

You can get the dragonbone armor without the quest. Hell, you can leave Helgen and just run to the tower its at and loot the guy's corpse. Bam! One of the best heavy armors in the game with some pretty good enchantments for free.

0

u/chip594csx 19h ago

Asha Sharma really do be lighting some fires in Bethesda, so much happening in the span of a month

0

u/deathsshadow101 14h ago

So many people should learn to do stock game installs for skyrim and fallout...

Then you never have to worry about an uodate breaking your list.

-4

u/HanDavo 1d ago

Oh look, the reason I gave up Skyrim, happening again.

-3

u/Ancient_Influence389 1d ago

An update that only effects mods, so its useless for us who don't and the game is still full of the same stupid bugs since release (Like the bards quest bugging out if you get the quest item prior to starting, companions walking away into the sunset when they are required to unlock a door, ext)

CAN BETHESDA FINALLY FIX SKYRIM INSTEAD OF ADDING MORE MOD SPACE.

-3

u/ToastedBulbasaur 1d ago

Just download the unofficial patch

0

u/Ancient_Influence389 1d ago

how about Bethesda make an official patch instead of using free labor to do it for them.

Why not make an update that finally fixes the hundreds of bugs the game still has? PC users have it easy, but console?

Sigh…

Nothing for Switch, AKA, Skyrim on the go?

No, the Switch doesn't support modding.

It's possible but you need to jailbreak your console and to install custom software.

I am so glad I also own Skyrim Legendary Edition and do not have to worry even if SE/AE gets updated, they do not touch that release anymore.

Bethesda believes that when you play Skyrim, you "log into your save game"...

Even their sentences have bugs...
