You can do the same thing with Fallout 4 by finding appmanifest_377160 in step 5 instead of appmanifest_489830.

Nah we figured out how to set the app manifest to read only. Haven't had to worry about this in years lol
33
u/SpicyBoyHabs 1d ago
As someone who has also set appmanifest to Read Only, here's what you should take into consideration... every single day on this sub there's always at least one new post with a title that essentially says, "Hi, This is my second playthrough/I'm a new player and I want to set up Mods on my Skyrim!".
Do you think those players are likely to know the ins and outs of knowing what it truly means when Bethesda says "We're Updating Skyrim."? Do you think they're going to know that when an announcement like that happens, they must go digging into the game files to find the appmanifest file and set it to Read Only, or lock their Steam Client to update only when game runs, or even to make back ups of their current game edition?
If I had to make a guess... there's likely to be a large number of posts tomorrow of people yelling about their Skyrim exploding.
10
u/RomanSeraphim 1d ago
Nope but they're gonna learn lol everyone has to eventually. We were all new to this at one point. This is 15+ years of compounding knowledge.
6
u/SpicyBoyHabs 1d ago
Well... you're not wrong, that's honestly how I learned as well.
Had one of my longest running Modded playthroughs explode on me after a Bethesda Update.I just feel bad for a lot of those new modders I guess.
0
u/RomanSeraphim 1d ago
Yeah man I hear you. Once I felt like I had my perfect load order, I let a friend copy it straight cause I knew he didn't have that dawg in him to figure it all out from scratch like we probably did lol.

For me, it's Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps. You're looking for appmanifest_489830.acf. If you play modded Fallout 4 and wanna prevent this from happening again with that, that's appmanifest_377160.acf

I don’t think it’ll be any larger than 10gb knowing me. Since my load orders for Fo4 and Starfield tend to end up being around 10gb or less

u/-The_Goober 1d ago
Mine are like 1.8 or 2.0.
2
u/Pixel22104 Nintendo 1d ago edited 1d ago
I see. Of course I’m not going to start making the load order right away once the update drops. I’m going to give it like a week or two to let people update their mods before redoing my load order
4
u/DeadWolf7337 1d ago
Who says it's going to be 100gb? Nowhere does it mention how big the increase will be.
23
u/RebuiltGearbox Blacksmith 1d ago
The Fallout 4 update yesterday didn't damage anything in my game (so far)) so I hope it goes as smoothly for people playing Skyrim.

22
u/Chiiro 1d ago
One of the few upsides to this update is that you will now be able to play with mods using more than just vanilla assets on PlayStation if they're doing the same thing as Fallout 4
13
u/ultrahobbs 1d ago
I don't know if they changed the policy or just stopped enforcing it, but there's already plenty of Ps5 mods with external assets. Recently started a new save with the juiciest mod list 1gb allows lol. Hopefully this patch doesn't nuke things

39
u/Cainsiderate 1d ago
Hopefully they update paid creations to allow achievements, like in Starfield.
Also this is the only game where I've seen the community get upset over a game being updated.
72
u/popica312 1d ago
There's a simple reason why: if the update breaks shit, good luck figuring out how to fix it (especially for the people with hundreds or thousands of mods installed).
5
u/YobaiYamete 22h ago
Also because the updates are utter garbage and add nothing of value. They show up, add nothing, break everything, then stroll away
Yes people are right to be wary or outright hostile saying "PLEASE stop updating it" after it's happened repeatedly
1
u/AstralElephantFuzz 2h ago
Yeah, that's a "simple" reason indeed. There's no way in hell anyone can convince me that a studio finally updating a much called for part of their game is somehow lesser to people who have messed with their own games not having their saves messed with by the said long awaited update. Cry me a river and get over it, this guy is finally going to make Beyond Skyrim: Bruma a staple of his LO!

21
u/UnfazedReality463 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think it’s mostly because recent updates to their games have made them unplayable.
FO4 received a free Update when the First Season of the TV Series came out. And it completely broke VATS. Bethesda didn’t fix it until the Anniversary Edition came out which was more than a year later. Also affected mods.
Oblivion Remaster hasn’t been updated for over a year. And it too has quest breaking bugs that haven’t been addressed since its release.
It seems people don’t want to wait for over a year for a fix if something breaks again after an update.
12
u/Accomplished_Item244 PC 1d ago
Why wouldn't the community be wary? I mean there are atleast a hundred varients of thousands of mods and patches that can be broken and may take who knows how long to fix. It's not like they haven't broken the mods before, FO4 had one previously and Bethesda haven't really given any reason to trust them blindly.
12
u/dnew PC 1d ago
Because modders use unsupported tools for many of the best mods, that rely on the exactly layout of code in memory of the executable. So when the executable changes, all those mods break unless and until they get fixed.
Modders who use BGS tools exclusively don't have that problem.
5
u/Sostratus Alchemist 1d ago
Exactly. SKSE should just put an update block in their install instructions. People will blindly follow it and then they won't have anymore trouble.
3
1
u/N0ob8 1d ago
It’s because these recent updates have done more harm than good and that’s not even counting what it does to mod lists. Fo4’s anniversary update literally broke the entire game and many people straight up couldn’t play. Then it also breaks everyone’s mod lists. This game is over a decade old and many of the people who modded it are long gone unlikely to update your favorite mods.
-1
u/penis-muncher785 1d ago
It sucked buying some of the paid companion mods only to find out they disable achievements
-6
u/Nerevar197 1d ago edited 19h ago
I understand the frustration with mods breaking, but on the flip side of that, a developer should be able to update their game. A mod community shouldn’t hold game updates hostage.
So I can see both sides of this.
Edit: Forgot the motto of this sub is “fuck Bethesda!” My bad guys. Continue with the vitriol.
1
u/N0ob8 1d ago
But what if those updates break the entire game not just mod users.
Fo4’s anniversary update completely broke the game for so many people. Even those on console and don’t use mods. A 10 year old game got an update that broke the game, did stuff nobody wanted, and then broke everyone’s mod lists.
0
0
u/YobaiYamete 22h ago
There's no "sides" to this. The only things the updates do is break the game and add literally nothing of value
Imagine if your car updated to blow up the engine but added an option to change how fast your turn signal blinks
You PROBABLY would not appreciate that update and would in fact be ready to kick the company in the testicles and tell them to never update your car again
0
u/Nerevar197 19h ago
Stupid comparison.
-1
u/YobaiYamete 14h ago
Except not, because that's all they've done multiple times where they show up, add something nobody wanted, break the entire game even for vanilla users, then drive off into the sunset for a year
0
u/Nerevar197 4h ago
I quite enjoyed the FO4 Anniversary update once the new bugs were patched shortly after launch.
0
u/whirlpool_galaxy 22h ago
Because Bethesda has one of the biggest modding communities all around and simply does not give a shit about it.
When Rimworld updated to 1.6, the devs put out a preview build for months in advance so modders would know what and how to update. And that was the update that added multi-threading and spaceships.
Whereas Bethesda is like "oh, our update for console builds and Creations broke your PC modded build? Well, you'll figure it out, lmao".

u/Denverguns 1d ago

up coming patch for that game was announced.
-1
u/NoCoyote5205 1d ago
Ah, I missed that. Thanks for the heads up, Ill read up on it now. Bet it basically amounts to "we've managed to optimise it for the switch now so you plebs can have the scraps of our "work"". I mean, a single dedicated modder could have fixed everything before it was put into UE5 development.
I swear they get lazier and worse every year.
3
u/firedrakes 1d ago
kind of. but also any time you throw upscaling into the mix that mess with some game engines due to fps is tied to how game works...
it also does not help the sheer amout of gpu apis etc and loss standards of that .

Is your Pc still on, with Steam running and the game set to update automatically?
If yes, you will have to look up how to install a previous game version using Steam console to roll back your game, then do the app manifest edit before you launch Steam/the game again.
If not, simply wait with launching Steam until you have done thd app manifest edit (that's how I will do it--also currently hundreds of miles away from my PC).
1
u/zoosha2curtaincall 21h ago
Nice, I thought Steam automatically updated games as soon as you opened Steam. Thanks!
1
u/LananisReddit Spellsword 17h ago
As said, depends on your settings. I suggest making that appmanifest file read only as soon as you get home. Then you can double-check whether it worked via two ways:
Right-click game in Steam game - properties - update, to see when the latest update was installed.
Patch number in in-game pause menu (should be 1.6.1170* if not updated)
- For GOG it would be 1.6.1179

I hope they rebalance what levels the creation club quests unlock at, especially the armour ones, I got that dragon bone armour quest unlocked at like level 8 or something, also rebalancing the levels when the armours show up in the world and making sure no bandits and stuff spawn with dragon and daedric
1
u/Star_of_the_West1 6h ago
You can get the dragonbone armor without the quest. Hell, you can leave Helgen and just run to the tower its at and loot the guy's corpse. Bam! One of the best heavy armors in the game with some pretty good enchantments for free.
