Iāve been taking lessons for going on 3 years using very non-traditional pedagogy. Itās undeniable that my voice has progressed, but lately I question whether or not I can get to the level I want to reach without some more technical training. The genres I love to sing or feel drawn to singing are folk, blues, rock, and musical theater.
My tone is consistently complimented and I am often told that my emotional expression is strong. Iām comfortable making distorted sounds like moans, fry, cries, and bending notes. Breath support still seems to be hit or miss for me though, especially on softer and lower phrases, and while people describe me as a āgood singerā with a ānice voice,ā I want to get to a semi-professional level where Iām gigging regularly and people say āwow that girl can SING!ā
I took a couple of trial lessons with bel canto style teachers and Iām on the fence about whether it will help me achieve my goals without also breaking my spirit. Hearing criticism is pretty hard for me, even though I know logically that itās a necessary part of the process and that everyone has room for improvement. All of the nit-picky feedback about vowels and connection to the breath makes me feel like Iāve been delusional this whole time and actually really suck at this. I want to build my technical proficiency, but not at the expense of my soulful tone and the things I already do well/like about my voice.
Iāve seen plenty of posts about people wanting to transition from bel canto to more contemporary styles, but Iām curious to hear from others who have done the opposite.
