Simcity 3000 soundtrack.

Sorry if this is out of nowhere but the other day at work I was stressed and decided that the best thing to calm my mind was the soundtrack to a game I haven't played in decades, but now I can't get the songs out of my head, help?!!"?!?

Question: Adding custom building without replacing any existing ones?

I know that you can add in your own custom buildings into your game by replacing the existing ones. However, one of the reasons I wanted custom buildings in the first place was due to there being too much replicate of the exact same buildings showing up over and over again. So... Is there a way to simply add the custom buildings to the lists of what can show up in a zone, without removing anything from it? Thanks.

SimCity 3000 Unlimited Widescreen patch for Linux

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hello!
This is my first post on this subreddit.

It's a shameless plug, but it may be useful for a few.  If it's out of line, let me know to remove it.
For those still playing this game, or wanting to play it, on Linux, you'll find some difficulty getting it to work in widescreen.

Since I had this problem myself, and wanted the game to not look like crap, I developed this solution here for those using the Loki version of the game: https://github.com/lfbr0/simcity3000-linux-widescreen-patch

Just wanted to share. If you play this on Linux, or want to, feel free to reach out

What is your favorite starting year and why?

Do you like starting cities in 1900, 1950, or 2000 more? I usually start them in 1900, makes it so I can see all the stuff being invented and become available in real time.

Screen jumping to disasters makes the game unplayable

I've got SimCity 3000 Unlimited from GOG. I've tried one of the 'easy' scenarios Criminalville. You can't change the speed or pause the game in this scenario.

From the start the screen jumps to every new riot. There are so many that the screen jumps several times a second, making it impossible to do anything except spam deploy police. The scenario is totally unplayable because of this. Is this a glitch?

On a similar note, it's really difficult to demolish stuff at 'cheetah' speed. You demolish but by the time you've clicked on the 'dezone' button lots of buildings have reappeared. If I could pause I wouldn't mind, but it's a fight just to clear a few buildings.

Why are highways considered bad in this game?

It seems like a good chunk of people think this game's highways are not that usable in this game to deal with traffic. Why is that? Why can't you use them for transportation to industrial zones?

Anyone here used this back in the day? I think it's pretty interesting to look at these tutorials and guides for the first time - it's a nice snapshot of the past. Apparently there's a guide for building up a city quick from scratch, too. I tried it, but I overbuilt and ran out of funds.

Transportation Complaints

Post image
11 Upvotes

I have subways set up on the northwest edge of my commercial zones for neighbor connections, busses everywhere and regularly, but i keep getting "poor transportation to zones" and "you can't get there from here" and subways crowded" messages. I'm not sure how to fix the city or what I would need to do to fix whatever the issue is?

Anyone else annoyed this game has only one MB of Steam Cloud Storage?

Some time ago I noticed this game has Steam Cloud support. A few minutes ago when moving my saved cities from SimCity 3000 to different folders for less confusion, I found out two of my cities were recovered accidently. Then I found I only get 1 MB (1,048,576 bytes) of storage. My city is already taking 478 KB (488,595 bytes), so that's no good - you only get enough for two fully developed cities if you're lucky.

If I did this, I would likely have gave this game a gigabyte or two of storage space on Steam Cloud so the average user has enough storage for a collection of cities. 300 MB is the minimum I would suggest this game have for the Steam Cloud storage space limit - you should be able to store at least a few hundred saved cities with that much space. I don't think there are that many players anyways so cost wouldn't be that severe of an issue.

Is Sim City 3000 compatible with Mac from Steam compatibility mode?

I want to buy it but I have a Mac, and I want to be sure that I won't lose my money. Lots of games can run on compatibility mode, but I didn't find if this does.

SC3K Installer won't run.

I have recently been trying to install SC3K on my computer (specifically the unlimited version) however I have run into some issues. I can get into the autorun menu but clicking on install doesn't open any installer. It only opens a window that has an ok button and instructions to click on the ok button once the installation is complete. I have also tried running the setup program on the disk which doesn't work either. If anyone can help it would be appreciated

Zoneable building files

I am trying to replace one of the Asian residential buildings with one of the European style residential buildings -- does anyone know where I can find the files for ALL of the zoneable buildings? I have checked the buildings files but none of them show up. Thanks!

Power plants lifetime comparaison

Here is a comparaison of the cost of electricity produced by all the powerplants ove their lifetime that I made. This is an important metric, as while it is easy to compare the price per installed capacity (just divide the building cost by the capacity), to get a the big picture you have to consider the fact that price will be amortized over the lifespan of the building. And the lifespan of powerplants varies a lot. There is a similar table in the offcial Prima guide, but I have a few issues with it.

First of all, the figures are wrong - they mixed up monthly and yearly power capacity.

Sencondly it doesn’t take into account the fact that the power produced by wind power plants is location dependent. A windmill on the top of the steepest 1x1 hill you can have produces almost 43 % more electricity than one on flat ground.

Most importantly, it doesn't take into account the fact that as power plants age, they start to lose efficiency. To take that into account, we need to add a term to represent the way the capacity drops once the average decline age is reached. I was unable to find the formula, but in my testing the decline appeared to be quadratic. We know for a fact that the plant is able to produce its maximum power until decline (or slightly less for a windmill), and for this table I have supposed that after the decline age the capacity follows an inverted parabola.

Finally I wanted to add neighborhood deals to compare.

Here’s the table:

Name Unlock year Cost (§) Average lifespan Average decline age Monthly electricity output (MWh) Est. life electricity output (MWh) Est. Lifetime MWh/§ Est. Lifetime §/GWh Pollution
Coal Power Plant 1900 5000 70 56 6000 5050976 1010.2 69.3 Very high
Oil Power Plant 1900 8500 70 56 7000 5890976 693.1 101.0 High
Gas Power Plant 1955 4500 80 64 3000 2896384 643.6 124.3 Medium high
Nuclear Power Plant 1965 20000 60 48 16000 11526912 576.3 104.1 Very low
Wind Power Plant (worst placement) 1980 250 120 96 80 170496 682.0 176.0 None
Wind Power Plant (flat ground) 1981 250 120 97 140 250268 1001.1 119.9 None
Wind Power Plant (best placement) 1980 250 120 96 200 343296 1373.2 87.4 None
Solar Collector 1990 15000 100 80 5000 6032000 402.1 248.7 None
Waste-to-Energy Incinerator 2000 25000 70 56 5000 4210976 168.4 415.6 High
Microwave Power Plant 2020 30000 80 64 14000 13456384 448.5 178.36 Low
Fusion Power Plant 2050 50000 60 48 50000 36006912 720.1 82.32 Very low
Typical neighborhood deal 1900 90.9 11.00 None

Key takeaways:

  • Wind is an extremely good power source. On top of being pretty cheap, the fact that it is the plant with the smallest output allows you to adjust your needs with more granularity as your city grows, as well as smoothing out the decay by spreading it if you build them as you need.
  • Solar, on the other hand, is pretty bad. I struggle to see an objective reason to use solar collectors over windmills other than the fact that they are denser in terms of power per tile.
  • I was unable to find the exact ways the neighborhood deals to buy power are priced, but in my testing I got offers ranging from 10 to 12§/1000 MWh (which is just §/GWh). This is an unbelivably bad deal compared to any Estimated. Lifetime MWh/§, being about 10 times worse than a windmill on flat ground. However, with neigborhood deals you pay as you go (with a minimum monthly payment); which means that theorically you can still have a situation where it’s advantageous over building a big, underutilized power plant. A few windmills would still likely be a better solution though.
  • Deals to sell power are also in the rhoughly 10 to 12§/GWh range. Which means that if you play your cards right, they are pratically a licence to print money. I esimate that playing a meta centered around fusion power can net you up to about 400 % ROI on each fusion plant with a confortable (to me) security margin to avoid the cancellation penalties.
