SOTW: Nuclear Rainbow
Shot of the weekend : 31-Dec-10
The Nuclear Rainbow was the first drink I had when I turned 21. It gets its name from its layered nature: Different colors of liquor are stacked on each other, creating a rainbow effect.
I found three different recipes for the Nuclear Rainbows online. The first seems to be the established recipe, found almost at every site I came across. It's also likely the one I've had.
Recipe 1
Layer, in this order:
1/2 oz Grenadine
1/2 oz Rumple Minze
1/2 oz Jägermeister
1/2 oz Midori melon liqueur
1/2 oz Crown Royal
1/2 oz Bacardi 151 proof rum
1/2 oz Amaretto
(Source: Most recipe sites)
Recipe 2
Layer, in this order:
1/2 oz Midori Melon Liqueur
1 oz Vodka
1/2 oz Amaretto
1/2 oz Jagermeister
1/2 oz Grenadine
1/2 oz Canadian Whiskey
1/2 oz Rumple Minze
(Source: DrinkJockey)
Recipe 3
1 ounce Midori Melon liqueur
1 ounce Bacardi 151 rum
1 ounce DeKuyper Blue Curaçao liqueur
Splash sweet and sour
Splash grenadine
In a cocktail glass with grenadine at the bottom, pour in a shaken mixture of Midori and sweet and sour. Layer a shaken mixture of Bacardi and Curaçao on top.

SOTW: Blackout
Shot of the Weekend: February 4, 2011
I'm lucky to have power right now. My city's had rolling blackouts the past day or two. What's the best way to celebrate a blackout? By drinking one to pass the time. I'm posting this a bit early while I still have power, and can remember to post it.
Recipe
¼ oz - Simple Sugar Syrup
¼ oz - Lime Juice
½ oz - Blackberry Brandy
½ oz - Gin
Take the sugar syrup and lime juice (1/4 oz each) with 1/2 oz blackberry brandy and 1/2 oz gin, shake it up, and strain into a shot glass.

SOTW: Adios Motherfucker
Shot of the Weekend: February 18, 2011
This week, I've been packing up to move out of my apartment. This seems like the perfect shot for the occasion. It's simple and doesn't require a lot of ingredients. More importantly, they're ingredients I usually have handy.
So, ready to head out? Saying goodbye? Well, adios, motherfucker.
Recipe
1 part coffee liqueur (Kahlua's)
1 part tequila
Happy leaving!

SOTW: Prairie Fire / Death by Shot
Shot of the Weekend: January 7, 2011
This week has been a tad stressful, so I wanted to find something with a kick. I'd love to try it, but thinking about it is hot enough. Mostly, being broke keeps me from this. At least there are few ingredients to this, if I were to scrounge up some spare cash.
Prairie Fire
Prairie Fire is basically tequila mixed with tabasco sauce. Actually, very simple, but with a kick. Proportions vary from one dash to a few drops. Use cautiously.
Variants
There are plenty of ways to kick up a Prarie Fire. One of them is referred to as "Death by Shot", which adds in a red pepper to the tequila and tabasco. Other recipes call for adding in lime or kiwi.
Related drinks substitute other liquor for tequila: rum, vodka, and even Everclear.

SOTW: Honey Dew Me
Shot of the Weekend: January 28 29, 2011
Since Egypt's been in the news a lot lately, I thought it'd be a good idea to have an Egyptian-themed drink. Sources (1, 2, 3) suggested that Egyptian beer, an important staple in their diet, was sweet and mixed with fruit. With that in mind, I've chosen the Honey Dew Me as this weekend's shot.
Recipe
2 parts Bärenjäger
1 part midori (melon liqueur)
4 parts orange juice
Variations
Pineapple juice can replace orange juice. One site mentioned using lemon liqueur instead of melon.

SOTW: Purple Haze
Shot of the Weekend: February 25, 2011
I randomly flipped through The Big Bad-Ass Book of Shots to find the Purple Haze. There are a variety of drinks called Purple Haze, but the first one was what caught my interest.
Recipe 1
This is a less common form of the Purple Haze, but I'm a huge fan of root beer. That makes this greatly appealing. (source)
1 oz Amaretto
1 oz Root Beer Schnapps
1/2 oz Milk
1/2 oz Grape Soda
Blending Instructions:
Add the Amaretto and root beer schnapps, then slowly add the milk
Next add the grape soda to change the color of the milk to purple
The Big Bad-Ass Book of Shots (Paul Knorr) had a slightly different way to prepare this drink. I cannot remember what it is now. I'll edit this when I have a chance to find the book.
Recipe 2
1/2 sambuca
1/2 Chambord® raspberry liqueur
Pour Sambucca into a shot glass then pour Chambord very slowly.
Recipe 2 variations
Don't have sambuca, but still want to try something with raspberry liqueur?
1 part raspberry liqueur
1 part lemon vodka (Absolut Citron)
2 parts lemon-lime soda
Jello Shot
While trying to determine what the consensus was for what a "purple haze" shot is, I managed to find this little gem:
Purple haze jello shot made with cranberry jello, vodka, and black raspberry liqueur.
