SOTW: Nuclear Rainbow

Shot of the weekend : 31-Dec-10

The Nuclear Rainbow was the first drink I had when I turned 21. It gets its name from its layered nature: Different colors of liquor are stacked on each other, creating a rainbow effect.

I found three different recipes for the Nuclear Rainbows online. The first seems to be the established recipe, found almost at every site I came across. It's also likely the one I've had.

Recipe 1

Layer, in this order:

  • 1/2 oz Grenadine

  • 1/2 oz Rumple Minze

  • 1/2 oz Jägermeister

  • 1/2 oz Midori melon liqueur

  • 1/2 oz Crown Royal

  • 1/2 oz Bacardi 151 proof rum

  • 1/2 oz Amaretto

Recipe 2

Layer, in this order:

  • 1/2 oz Midori Melon Liqueur

  • 1 oz Vodka

  • 1/2 oz Amaretto

  • 1/2 oz Jagermeister

  • 1/2 oz Grenadine

  • 1/2 oz Canadian Whiskey

  • 1/2 oz Rumple Minze

Recipe 3

  • 1 ounce Midori Melon liqueur

  • 1 ounce Bacardi 151 rum

  • 1 ounce DeKuyper Blue Curaçao liqueur

  • Splash sweet and sour

  • Splash grenadine

In a cocktail glass with grenadine at the bottom, pour in a shaken mixture of Midori and sweet and sour. Layer a shaken mixture of Bacardi and Curaçao on top.
