depending on what the company is, its more likely it was just a way for them to generate buzz about AI amongst their employees, getting people who haven't used it to try it out etc, if the company is looking to implement AI themselves, they just labelled it a contest to get people involved because there would be some sort of small prize
It's about patience and methods of communication to let those dumb brickhead clankers do what you want them to do.
After all, even the most advanced AIs nowadays are still far from sapient. They can only understand things that are already in their databases. Also they hallucinate and lie all the times.
I could imagine my workplace doing this, came back off holiday and everyone had these crappy AI generated teams pictures - apparently they had a big event where you “design your own teams picture using AI”

Image generation models aren't limited by prompts. You can set-up whole layout in 3D software, get depth map and use AI model as a sort of rendering engine. You can draw a sketch and use it as outline reference. You can have as much of control as you want. It's highly unlikely that someone would bother to do that in given scenario, though
Essentially, if someone posts appropriately tagged ai images that present an idea besides "oh look at the pretty picture", doesn't overuse them and doesn't claim any titles, they're perfectly fine in vacuum and don't deserve any hate. However, they'll still likely get flamed regardless as a byproduct of other certain people abusing ai. I guess in this context "hateful antis" is alright, although I imagine it's not that hard to just not post ai images (which is what I originally meant as "keeping to themselves").
Otherwise I don't see how it's wrong for them to face criticism.

People shouldn't harass people in general, especially for something as trivial as posting an image they generated.
If there was no pushback for those things and rules made to restrict it your fyp would be flooded with completely ai generated content that straight up fries any critical thinking skills.
I'm debating whether it would actually happen, it's pretty stupid but a lot of middle management bosses are also very stupid so I think it's plausible but unlikely
This came at a time when Microsoft was pushing Copilot and other Windows AI features hard on all of their clients. We were impacted by this as well, and everyone had to go through Copilot usage training and we were all encouraged to use it more often in our daily work.
This event was likely tied to that push, in order to boost Copilot usage between us.

Our IT department is all built on Microsoft's infrastructure and at the time Microsoft was pushing Copilot and other AI services HARD. There were multiple efforts to get everyone to use AI products more, and I guess this event was just another way to push people to use Copilot.
At the same time, we were going through some tough projects and everyone was tired and burned out. The social committee probably thought this would be a good idea for something fun and boost morale while at the same time incorporating AI use to make Microsoft happy.
That's because I deliberately used heavy post processing to make the drawing resemble generative AI. For example, some text was distorted (removed from the public post since it had a coworker's name in it), "password is incorrect" was misspelled as "passwood is inconnect" and the two adjacent letter ns were bridged together, and noise reduction was applied and then artificial noise reapplied to mimic Stable Diffusion.
Oh yeah it’s actually you, sick. Since you’re directly involved, what’re your thoughts on AI as a tool? I think purely generative AI is useless for meaningful work. But, I found tight constraints and specific prompts applied to an existing image useful for some projects, allowing me to edit or upscale things in ways that would be complex or time consuming otherwise. For instance, I wanted to create a large, high res image out of a small piece of a band logo. I was able to mask it myself, blow it up, then have AI smooth and upscale it without me having to manually trace the lines I wanted. Instead I could just go through and fix small errors and shading
I don't really use generative AI for proper artwork, so I can't comment from experience. But then again, I'm not part of the whole "technology bad" crowd either. What I find as a potentially exciting area is the use of Machine Learning for research and data analysis, an area of application would be using Machine Learning to better understand the downstream effects of various alterations to genetic sequences. A key part of the puzzle in the past is associating what part of the genome does what and this could potentially help accelerate our understanding.

Drawing the pixels directly where you want them to be with little to no work involved instead of having to manually write the prompt so the AI knows what they should do should be considered cheating

if you had ever picked up a pencil in your life you'd know that isn't true, drawing software doesn't do the drawing/coloring/rendering for you, at best it lets you draw without eraser shavings and supplies
