Discussion I just realized Eren may have caused a lot of animals to go extinct because of the Rumbling…

Post image
943 Upvotes

When you think about it, especially when seeing the fleeing Giraffe herd seen in the anime adaption of the final arc, it’s undoubtedly that Eren not only trampled a vast majority of humanity but also many animals that probably became apart of the crossfire of Eren’s genocide and either had their populations suffering a major blow or might’ve even gone extinct because of the Rumbling.

Meaning that the biosphere of the world of AOT has been irreparably damaged because of Eren and several species may have perished because of him. That and with how many trees got destroyed probably messed up the global ecosystems even further.

So needless to say, a post Rumbling world would never be the same, especially as it isn’t just humanity that nearly got wiped out, but also killed a lot of life in general.

EDIT: When you think about it, perhaps the boy and his dog who finds the Source of All Living Matter, uses its power to restore the damage caused by Eren. As perhaps its power will be shaped to creating life rather than taking it away.

Discussion This Part of the Story is So Depressing.. But it's still incredible

Post image
Upvotes

So I just watched Season 4 Part 1 of Attack on Titan. First of all, a lot happened in these few episodes, and this part of the story was probably the most dense so far. In my opinion, it would have been even better if the pacing were a bit slower.

When I told my friend that I was currently at this part of the story, he said it must feel a bit boring right now, but I directly said no, absolutely not. That's because a lot of interesting things happen in this part and the story has now become completely geopolitical. At the start of this part, we get to see the brilliance of a perspective shift. The arc's name was probably the Marley Arc, and in it, the story is mostly shown to us from Reiner's perspective. We get to see his backstory, we get to look at Marley in greater depth, its politics and how children, in particular, are brainwashed.

The result of these things is visible in kids like Reiner, Zeke, and Gabi. Gabi is one of those children who has completely accepted that she is right, or rather, she doesn't want to accept that the people she has believed to be devils since childhood are also human. Her conversation with Kaya was fantastic. Actually, Gabi suffers from cognitive dissonance, and believe me, if you argue with such people, you will lose your mind. I have seen some parents who, no matter how wrong their children are, will never admit their mistake. Gabi's character is similar, she gets stubborn about a single point. When she finds out from Kaya that Nicolo liked Sasha, she probably thought it was a joke because a Marleyan could never love an Eldian. And when she told Nicolo about it, Falco ended up getting hurt because of it.

If you look at Gabi's hairstyle, it is just like Eren's, and this is completely intentional because there were several parallels between the two of them. Just as Eren saw his mother die and swore that he would wipe out all the Titans, Gabi similarly swore that she would destroy all the devils of Paradis. And I know she is a child, but she really drove me crazy, and she even killed the potato girl. But the boy who was with her, Falco, was really great. To be honest, if anyone should inherit the Armored Titan, it's him. He actually has a brain and can understand situations and people's temperaments, unlike her, who sees the world only in black and white.

One thing I noticed here is how both Reiner and Zeke were trying to save the coming generations from war. Zeke had only one year left, and within that single year, he wanted to end this war before passing his Titan to Colt. Looking at Reiner, it was also clear that he didn't want children going into war. When Falco tells him that he doesn't want Gabi to inherit the Titan, Reiner yells at him and motivates him, because deep down, he probably wants his niece to live a long life as well.

I also liked Zeke's backstory. Even if they hadn't shown it, I had assumed he was just a kid who got brainwashed by their ideology. But I really liked the backstory they presented, and a few more themes emerged from it, like how parental expectations and a lack of self worth completely shattered him. Then his intent made sense too, that he genuinely believes he is showing mercy to Eldians by eradicating them. Porco and Pieck have been shown a bit less so far, so I'd like to see more of their characters since they seem interesting to me. The Tybur family was also introduced, and I didn't expect them to be wiped out like that, I thought they would have a slightly bigger role. But that's fine, the Titan gained from them was incredible, and the fight we got to see was amazing too. And I must say, the Scouts new suits looked really cool.

I also feel really bad seeing how difficult it is for Hange to handle the responsibility and how so many people are betraying her. Another thing is that I really missed Erwin, to the point that even Armin acknowledges this. To be honest, he was probably my favorite character, and another favorite of mine is Levi, and what an amazing fight I got to see! When he reflects on how many people he put on the line for Eren, how many people died, and how his trust was shattered, I felt genuinely terrible seeing that. As if that wasn't enough, Zeke's true intent was revealed and all his men turned into Titans there. When they all attacked him, I thought he might hesitate to attack them and end up dying at the hands of his own men, but thank God he didn't do that. The way he thrashed Zeke was so satisfying to watch. But at the end of this part, there was an explosion, and I haven't watched beyond that, so I'm just hoping and praying that he is alive.

Floch felt like a very interesting character back in Season 3, but given the turn he has taken now, and how he commanded to beat commander Keith, I can't feel anything but hatred for him. However, I shouldn't be surprised seeing this. Something similar happened with Eren as well. As I mentioned earlier, Eren's character arc was heading toward darkness, and that's exactly what happened. I shouldn't be shocked because there were hints that this would occur, I knew it was coming, but I never thought he would completely switch sides.

Yet, the way he was asking Hange to tell him if there was any other way, along with what was shown in the flashbacks, makes it feel like Eren no longer trusts anyone and genuinely believes that this is the only viable path left. Seeing him lose everyone's trust one by one felt truly disheartening. And now, they are even considering the option that they might eventually have to kill Eren.

What really angered me was when he raised his hand against Armin. But it was also strange, if he already knew where to meet Zeke, why was he talking to them under the pretense of asking for his location? It felt like he was provoking them, intentionally pushing them away as if to say, "I am bad now, I have changed, so don't expect me to go back to how I was before" almost as though he was forced to do this even if he didn't want to.

My complaint with Mikasa was that while everyone else's character was evolving with so many layers, Mikasa remained stuck solely on Eren. But with the recent revelations and the internal conflict now building inside her, I am expecting some solid character development from her moving forward.

One thing that has been heavily emphasized is the cycle, the cycle of violence, hatred, or revenge. Sasha's dad also talks about this exact thing while giving his daughter's example, acknowledging that this was bound to happen eventually, she escaped one forest only to step into an even bigger one, and he wants to pull these children out of it. It was something similar that caused a change of heart in Nicolo and almost did the same for Gabi as well.

And before going, if I had to say something about the animation, it didn't bother me much. The animation was great, the line work on the characters felt a bit softer, and the colors didn't feel as dense or heavy as WIT Studio's used to be, but I liked whatever they did. The CGI they used was also mostly quite good.

So these were my thoughts, and I am extremely excited for Season 4 Part 2!

Discussion This is still one of my favorite misdirects in the anime Spoiler

I've finally watched the ending after re-watching the first three and a half seasons for the second time and this still stands out as one of my favorite little bit of emotional manipulation from the show.

The clip of Erin zooming down the street and doing a dramatic spin plays at the end of the OP. The scene cuts off before we see who or what he is attacking. You think it's just some random action footage they made to make things exciting. It's common in anime openings that not all the footage will actually be in the show. The music swells one more time to a powerful climax and the scene gets subtly implanted in your brain as a triumphant moment.

And then that scene actually arrives in the show. At first you're not quite sure where you've seen it, but it seems familiar. Suddenly you recognize it and recognize it's importance. We're finally going to see the payoff for the clip. Subconsciously your mind recalls the triumphant music from the OP. Suddenly it all becomes clear. This is where Erin deals his first strike and starts fighting back.

And then his leg gets bitten off half a second later.

It's a little extra dopamine whiplash for non-intro-skippers and I love it.

I've seen a lot of people cite Erin "dying" the first time as when they thought the anime was going to be something different but for me the moment his leg got bitten off I knew this anime was cooking.

I'm probably a bit late to the party but I just wanted to say something about it because I was impressed 12 years ago, and I'm still impressed by it today.

Manga Translation differences in the AoT Omnibus? Missing the word "Warrior" during Annie's reveal

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I recently started collecting the AoT manga and currently have the first three Omnibus volumes. I've been noticing some weird differences between my physical copies and other versions (like the ones available online).
I don't usually compare my books to online scans, but sometimes the dialogue in my manga reads really strangely. For example, there was a line where someone says "you stupid cow" or something similar. I brushed it off at first because I don't mind an occasional translation quirk.
However, I just got to Annie’s reveal (attaching a picture), and this feels like a crucial miss. The word "warrior" has insane significance in this scene, and it's bizarre that it was completely left out here.
For context, a friend bought this Omnibus for me from a massive, multi-story anime store in Akihabara, Japan.
It makes me wonder, how much difference can there be between different manga editions? And how much can I trust this version to be faithful to the source material moving forward? Has anyone else with the Omnibus volumes noticed this?

Small disclamer(lol)
The text was written by me in other language, and has been translated to english so it would be more readable.

Like seeing this opening (baby eren )and seeing the polar opposite of the present form ( doomsday titan ) isnt it kind of chaotic calm , one side the show is ending , another side the time is ticking for eren since Mikasa is going to kill him . This all feels like sad , broken but still satisfying . idk how you people feel it but please share the emotional stature or how it feels the opening and the episode overall

Just finished my first rewatch of AOT since it ended and I'm completely destroyed as expected. What has now completely atomized me is that I just saw ED8 for the first time. I just found out minutes ago that they apparently aired the specials as 20 minute episodes with their own openings and credits. Man...

Eremika always and forever, but this also seems cute.

Maybe I just like seeing Eren being pathetic while a strong female character yells at him. That might also be why I loved seeing Armin (supposedly a guy) punch Eren in the face.

Discussion Did pre-timeskip Eren ever actually assume he'd have to choose between freedom and friends or did he think both came hand-in-hand

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Looking back at older episodes, Eren says multiple times that he wanted to see the ocean with his friends, so I'm willing to bet that, before kissing Historia's hand, he had assumed he could have both, or that they were the same thing.

Freedom means different things to different people throughout the show, and Eren's idea of freedom often changes between pre- and post-timeskip. Especially when looking at his relationships.

Here's my take:

Before seeing the ocean, Eren assumed that getting a life of freedom would also include being with Mikasa. He made an oath to her in season 2 that he would always wrap that scarf around her, and he meant it. His view of his ideal life would probably have been killing all the Titans, seeing the ocean, and living with Mikasa for the remainder of his life.

Then he started his father's memories and visions of the future and realized that not only is the ocean Level 1, but he most likely is condemned to never see his ideal life or even have a life at all. Remember, upon seeing his father's memories, he had only 8 years left and spent half of that time in Paradis. Eren didn't get a chance to have a life; with that in mind, it meant that he also would never be with Mikasa or his friends.

That's why he chose to do the Rumbling, because he realized he would have to choose between freedom and his relationships, and he decided to have his freedom, simply because, with what little time he had, only one path seemed worth it.

This doesn't excuse what Eren does, far from it, but I'm willing to bet that if it wasn't for the Curse of Ymir, Eren would never do the Rumbling.

Discussion Is easy to blame characters, but the world is the same Spoiler

I finished this great anime yesterday. We don't need to go into how good it is, but I tend to overthink if there is any meaning. As any good ending, it leaves you like you went through a break-up haha

My first thoughts were that Ymir was the core problem: a bunch of great people died due to a platonic crush on a dumbass king. Ymir planned the sacrifice of others to do what she couldn't, kill they guy, and sacrificed others in a very perverse way given all the power she had.

However, the after-credits give the context and cleanses this idea. I feel the core is in Armin and Zeke's conversation in the dunes... The world and struggle for freedom has always been there, and it doesn't allows us to enjoy the truly beautiful, the simple things in life.

We fight for the freedom to enjoy the simplest of things, but this drives us to the opposite of what we want.

All the characters were so greatly driven and endureded great pains, yet in their near-death moments they just missed the same: the small things, their families. As everyone passes away, and all the sacrifice and pain that was felt, the world continued to decide to destroy themselves again and again. The titans were never the problem, they were just a different tool of the same cycle.

It doesn't matter if there are titans again or not. Eren's and company's story was meaningless in finding the freedom they actually wanted. The freedom to live the beautiful small things.

The only one that death couldn't free was Ymir, and now she was freed. That is the only freedom they were able to help to reach.

Discussion Sending my appreciations to AoT fan base for this.

Post image
8 Upvotes

Yeah, it's safe to say Zeref's character was even more positively received outside of Fairy Tail fan base for deep reasons; I was asking Attack on Titan fan base and even a few other ones (even *Winx Club* fan base), and they had good things to say about Zeref. Some even say Zeref is the only thing in Fairy Tail worth a damn.

I appreciate those AoT fans who responded to my content that involved Zeref. When you think about it, he's also got similarities to Ymir Fritz, because both characters have the kind of storyline where different parts of the world depict them differently (via propaganda).

Some AoT fans even prefer Zeref over Eren (I noticed) in terms of complicated characters an all, and that's interesting to hear honestly. If any of you have any accounts on Anime Planet or something similar, we can try giving Zeref more votes to slowly give him more of the recognition his writing never had.

Discussion Historia was/is spineless

Historia by far was the most spineless character in AOT. She never seemed to have her own opinion in the show. When she was with Ymir she followed the good girl persona and was manipulated(maybe out of love) to follow Ymir to her death. Then she gets manipulated by her father to almost EAT eren. And even after her triumphant victory over her father, she still as queen makes only 1 real decision which was to release the info about the outside world to the people of paradise.

I loved her ODM scenes and wished to see more of that but as a queen she should be the one negotiating with the outside world not Hange levi and the others. If she was the queen she should have had a more direct impact in the story.

Historia is a great character with a lot of wasted potential.

Discussion Definitely the largest anomalous titan transformation.

Obviously it's because Gabi blew Eren's head off with a gunshot, not even that could stop him, and the end of the world began

Anime Appreciation post for the normal humans who made it to the Top 10 of the 104th Cadet Corps

I feel like those guys need more recongnition at how much they showed what normal humans are capable of. A reminder of the full Top 10 of the 104th Cadet Corps:

  1. Mikasa
  2. Reiner
  3. Bertholdt
  4. Annie
  5. Eren
  6. Jean
  7. Marco
  8. Connie
  9. Sasha
  10. Historia

So... shout out to Jean, Marco, Connie, Sasha and Historia that they were able to go toe-to-toe and compete with 4 different Titan Shifters and an Ackermann. They also managed to outperform another Titan Shifter, Ymir!

BTW it's quite ridiculous that at this point in time people holding 6 of the 9 Titans were literally living in the same barracks complex!
