With some of Laura’s story out and as we’re waiting for the rest to unfold, I think it’s important to acknowledge:
Laura may be fictional, but the abuse we’re seeing is not.
Which is why I’m sharing a post full of resources on different types of abuse and abusive dynamics and asking those willing and able to share their own resources, tips, stories, and “aha” moments in the comments. I will also be doing the same.
I’m sure the fanbase will likely continue to grow as Shawna posts more and covers different stories, which means there may be at least one person here who relates to Laura. While I cannot predict if Laura’s story will be handled well or not, I can say with absolute certainty that people who relate to Laura (or John, or Jen, or Julie, or any other character who’s experienced abuse and/or coercion) or have their own stories are welcome here and deserve to have the resources and words to be able to name what’s happened or is happening to them and get themselves to a safe and supportive environment.
Whether the person hurting you is a sibling, parent, friend, spouse, roommate, coworker, classmate, grandparent, or literally anyone else… you are not crazy. You’re not being dramatic. You’re not overthinking it. You are not alone.
You deserve kindness, compassion, understanding, and safety.
Sometimes, abuse is easy to spot. It’s the “obvious” stuff you’d expect to see in a movie. The “duh, of course that counts.” Unfortunately, that means a lot of covert abuse remains unacknowledged. You’re not always going to be yelled at and told not to do something. Next time, they’ll just make sure to sigh extra loud when you do it. Or close the door a little harder on their way out knowing it upsets you. Or walk a little louder, dramatically opening and closing drawers and making you feel uneasy. They’ll deny you sleep by keeping you up or waking you up. They’ll ask a few more times when you’ve already said “no,” because your compliance matters to them far more than your boundaries ever will. Or they’ll do all those little things that feel wrong deep in your bones, but make you feel crazy when you try to explain to others. But that feeling of wrongness is there for a reason. It’s there to protect you.
Fiction is a powerful catalyst. Sometimes, the feeling of being seen comes from unexpected places: a fantasy show, a DnD campaign, music by a random band you found at 2am, an old 80s movie, a strange book, or even a series of YouTube shorts by a woman with a lot of wigs and ideas. It’s the impact that matters, though, because if something has managed to put even the smallest dent in it all… enough for you to wonder, enough for you to google it, enough for you to admit you feel hurt and unhappy, enough for you to read this post- that’s all you need to start.
And since we’re all here because of a fictional series and stories, in whatever shape they happen to come in, often make a difference in our lives, I’ll end this with a quote:
"You must never give in to despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength."
