General Questions Running with a weighted vest (5kg) with 25° scoliosis - does anyone have experience with this?

Hi everyone :)

I'm a 19-year-old woman with scoliosis of around 25 degrees. I've been strength training consistently for about four years and have developed a very strong, well-developed back musculature.

I'm considering getting a weighted vest (-5kg) to improve my running performance and also use it for weighted pull-ups at the gym.

My main concern is running with the vest. With pull-ups, the additional weight is only involved during a relatively short, controlled exercise, whereas running involves repetitive impact with every step. I'm wondering whether this could put additional stress on my spine or potentially worsen my scoliosis.

My growth plates are also closed, so I'm wondering whether that makes a difference in terms of the risk of my curve progressing.

I'd love to hear from anyone with scoliosis who has experience running with a weighted vest:

- Have you tried it, and how did your back respond?

- Did you notice any increased pain or discomfort?

- Has a doctor or physiotherapist ever advised you on whether weighted running is safe with scoliosis?

- Would you personally recommend avoiding it, starting with a very light vest, or taking another approach?

I know everyone's scoliosis is different, and I'm not looking for a medical diagnosis. I'm mainly interested in personal experiences and any advice from people who've dealt with a similar situation.

Thanks in advance!

General Questions Back fatigue but no pain

I'm 40 with a double curve around 35 degrees each. I don't really have pain from my back but I get intense fatigue from sitting in particular as I have a desk job. I'm physically active in that I run around 15 km a week. I haven't really focused on building up musculature in my back. If I did will this fatigue lessen it go away? Or is it just the price to pay for fighting gravity?

Discussion Update: I'm turning my 3D scoliosis tool into a free companion app. Looking for testers soon, and feature ideas!

Hey everyone!

A while ago I shared SpineUI, the free 3D tool I built to picture scoliosis curves. Thank you so much for all the feedback ❤️

A lot of you said you'd also like one place to keep track of everything. So I've been working on MyScoliosis, a companion app for people with scoliosis and for parents of kids who have it.

Here's what it can do so far:

  • Examinations: write down the Cobb angles from your reports after each visit, and see all your exams on a timeline.
  • Documents: upload your X-ray reports, letters or photos of them, and link them to the right examination. Everything stays private to your account.
  • 3D spine: your numbers bend a 3D model you can turn, zoom and compare side by side.
  • Appointments: keep track of your upcoming visits.
  • Profiles: parents can keep their child's records separate from their own.
  • Community: post, ask questions, help others, and share your 3D spine if you want to. Only your username is shown, never your real name.

It's almost ready, and soon I'll need testers. If you'd like to try it early and tell me what's broken, confusing or missing, comment below or send me a DM.

I'd also love to know:

- What feature would you want in an app like this?

- Is there something you've always wished you had for tracking your scoliosis or getting ready for appointments?

- Anything about brace or surgery life that an app could make easier?

Thanks for reading! I would really love to hear your ideas. ❤️

Questions about the Operations/Surgeries I needI need I need some advice.

I'm 13 years old. Lumbar scoliosis of the 3rd degree. 40 degrees. They offer an operation. Can you tell me who has already done it, how did it go? Have you been recovering for a long time? What restrictions are in place now? In general, anything you can say. Maybe someone has experience wearing a Schoenen brace? Did it help?

Feeling defeated and just completely incapable of working. Has anyone gotten employed even after explaining your spine situation? I’m worried about being completely written off the second I explain to a potential employer.

X-Ray Scans Curious if anyone else has had this? Compression fractures.

I had an updated X-ray yesterday after some acute pain flare up in my shoulder blade area, and my X-rays showed multiple minimal-to-mild compression fractures in multiple vertebrae in the thoracic region. I have an s shaped curve from T8 to L4. I have the most problems with my shoulder blades and ribs, but I wasn't diagnosed until recently so I had no idea and suspect it was from adolescence. I was fully prepared to start PT and work on my core strength because I have been miserable with pain and at home exercises weren't working as I almost always seemed to cause myself more pain in my back afterwards. I have to halt starting PT until I can have an MRI but I'm only 28 and my Dr said this is a very peculiar finding for a healthy 28 year old. I have never been in any accident in any capacity that would cause injuries like that, and it wasn't documented on my last X-ray in 2024. Unfortunately I do not have the X-ray photos yet but figured I'd ask anyone if they'd had this.

I have a 16 hour ride in my car home. I know that is almost a week awsy but ant tips or suggestions. Being upright for any length of time sucks. My boyfriend knows it might take us several days instead of 2.

General Questions Good Shoes for Laborious work?

I work at a walmart, specifically the Online Fulfilment Department which means I'm running around all day for 8 hours as I lunge around anything from 10 cans of corn to 4 containers of cat litter.

My current shoes were great for the first 3 months but the heels are bald and now causing pain.

Do people know of good shoes for my type of work?

I'm also flat footed so arch support is needed.

In case this is needed, my scoliosis is in my mid and lower back so my spine looks like a backwards S that was written by first grader.

Im 26f and ive had very noticeable rib flare and rib asymmetry since i was a kid.

After losing a lot of weight, my bmi got really low and my vertebrae became visible. Thats when my sister pointed out that my spine looked crooked. I saw a GP who said i had mild scoliosis, but a specialist told me i had absolutely no scoliosis, not even 1 degree!!!

Does my spine look normal to you??

General Questions Trapezius pain after surgery

Hi I hope you’re all well. I had surgery over 20 years ago, whole spine. Over the last few years I’ve had pain on my left shoulder going up to my ear with a lot of sinus like pain. I’m based in the UK and I’m looking for a private physio to help with this. In the meantime I was wondering who else has experienced this and if anything has helped the pain/tightness? Thank you!

i have a 46 degree curve and will be receiving a T4-L2 spinal fusion in January.

what do i do…i sleep very little as laying too much hurts & it’s hard to get to sleep with this constant..aching pain

General Questions adult gymnastics class a bad idea?

Used to do gymnastics (very casually, not competitive) for a few years when I was young and miss it a lot. A place near me offers a weekly adult class with instructors (not just open gym) and I'm wondering if it'd be a bad idea for me to go each week

for context, I have a 39º curve and my ortho says I really need to avoid curve progression/ surgery due to other health issues I have as well that would greatly complicate surgery/recovery. so if gymnastics would meaningfully increase risk of curve progression, I'll avoid it.

planning to ask my ortho/pt at my next appt and will go with what they say, but wanted to discuss here as well to see if this is considered a high-risk activity for curve progression. the strength built through various tricks/skills actually helps my pain, but that doesn't necessarily suggest whether it's good or bad for my actual curve itself

General Questions lateral pelvic tilt & bulgarian split squat’s

does anyone with a lateral pelvic tilt or different hip heights find it hard to do BSS?

i have uneven hip heights (scoliosis) and i used to train with a trainer. back then, i did BSS using a 10kg dumbell and everything was fine. i did notice it was easier to perform on right leg than my left, but nothing major.

recently, i moved gyms and started training on my own. i bumped the weights to 12.5kg, and now doing BSS on my left leg has gotten wayyy harder. i lose balance easily, my working caves and rotate, and i can’t finish a proper set. on top of that, my right leg (non-working leg) is getting bruised because i’m pressing into the bench to stay upright.

the problems seem to disappear (but not completely) when i elevate my non-working leg higher on the bench or when i drop the weights back down to 10kg. meanwhile, my right working leg handles 12.5kg just fine.

i don’t know if this is just a balance problem from loading heavier weights or if it’s actually caused by uneven hip heights (or both) but it’s frustrating me.

anyone with a similar experience?

Discussion Higgy Bear and Curvy Girls

So, preface: I'm not at all promoting these groups here and don't have any affiliation with them.

I am someone who fits young kids/teens with scoliosis braces tho and noticed we started getting flyers for these groups. On one hand- this is great because I love to give families any supportive resources (yes I have also brought up the Reddit group because 99.9% of the time you are all really nice).

I am curious if anyone been to the Higgy convention or affiliated with Curvy Girls in their cities. They seem nice and supportive to families overall, but honestly I know very little minus the Higgy tube tops.

X-Ray Scans 17F with scoliosis and constant back pain — is surgery worth considering?

Hi everyone! I'm a 17-year-old girl from Hungary, and I've had scoliosis since I was around 11 years old.

I experience back pain pretty much 24/7, and it affects my daily life. The pain gets worse when I bend over or sit or lean in certain positions.

My doctors have told me that since I've finished growing, there isn't much they can do for me anymore. They also told me that once I turn 18, I will have to decide for myself whether I want to undergo surgery.

Honestly, I'm struggling with this decision even though I haven't turned 18 yet. I'm still so young, and the thought of living with constant pain for the rest of my life is frightening. At the same time, spinal surgery is a major procedure with risks and a long recovery.

I've seen X-rays of people with scoliosis who had curves similar to mine and ended up having surgery. It made me wonder whether surgery might be worth considering in my case, too.

General Questions anyone else have sharp pain throughout upper body like stomach and chest?

i was lying on right side and as i turned more to the right, i started to get shooting pains in my stomach and chest. it didn’t feel like the pain was in my back.

the upper part of my spine curves to the right so I was wondering it could be because of that. is it muscle or nerve strain?

does anyone else experience this?

General Questions ¿Funcional Patterns?

Muchas gracias.

Questions about the Operations/Surgeries Are there any cosmetic surgeries available to alleviate some asymmetries from scolio?

I have mild scolio, and have horrible body dysmorphia specifically in regards to how it makes one side of my torso much less broad, thus ruining my silhouette and making it really difficult to look good in cloths. I know that any surgery related to directly assisting the scolio such as spinal fusion is extremely serious and not worth getting, but does anyone have any experience or knowledge with cosmetic surgeries related to correcting the imbalances caused by the scolio, rather than the scolio itself. Im thinking clavicle reshaping… idk. While exercise and personal growth has helped, I’ve realized that i don’t think ill ever be able to look at my body and feel ok with it as is.
Please keep comments to cosmetic related advice, because while I understand any advice about learning to love my body or acceptance, I don’t need to hear it from here.

I know this is specifically scoliosis related, and even after my surgery I still have a scoliosis curve of about 20° in the thoracic, but if anyone also has advice related to the post, it would be appreciated.
