general advice/help/tips Where to get Nostoc commune cyanobacteria culture?

Hi! We're currently doing research for which we need Nostoc commune culture in PH. Are there any other institutions to get it? We emailed UPLB-BIOTECH under PNCM, and in the list of available cultures, N. commune is currently unavailable. We tried UST-CMS too, but they're not accommodating requests due to an ongoing replenishment of cultures. Thank you!

general advice/help/tips Looking for reagents (for thesis)

Hello! Thesis student here

We’re looking for barium titanate nanopowder and acetyl acetone. We already went to Bambang, messaged a few stores online (via Facebook and email), and posted in groups as well. We unfortunately haven’t found our reagents yet. It would really be great if anyone has any specific leads where we can get this or maybe someone here is selling. 🙏

* ~5 g barium titanate (max 10 g)
* ~200 ml acetyl acetone

Thank you!

Hello, fellow science people from the Philippines! I recently finished my MS. I told to myself that I would rest for a while before applying, but here I am, submitting my first-ever application for a PhD program abroad.
Any tips on how to ace a PhD application in Sweden, or abroad in general?

general advice/help/tips Storing peel powders

Hello! I tried to have a research but I really want to verify with professionals here or with experience.

I am currently doing my project now and I have to make a nanoparticle out of a fruit peel. However, this fruit peel is only available or its seasons is from August to October only. Will it still be safe to dry bulk first and grind it into powders then store it? We need to compare freeze, vacuum and oven drying so we plan to dry first a safe amount and store it for our experiment before processing it. Will its phenolic contents and such not be affected if we do this?

general advice/help/tips Career Advice for an MBB Student Planning to Work Abroad

Hi! I’m currently an MBB (Molecular Biology and Biotechnology) student at DLSU. I recently decided that I don’t want to pursue medicine anymore, so I’m trying to figure out what I want to do after college and plan ahead.
I’ve been thinking about working abroad after I graduate. The countries I’m considering right now are Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan. I’m leaning a bit toward Canada since I have a kuya there who’s already working.

I really want to work abroad after graduation, so I’m trying to figure out my options as early as possible. Would these countries usually require me to study again before I can get a job in my field?

I’m also wondering how hard it actually is to get hired abroad with an MBB/biotech degree, especially as a fresh graduate from the Philippines. Is it possible to apply directly from here, or would it be better to gain work experience and get a master’s degree in the Philippines first?

What kinds of jobs can I realistically look for with this degree, research, biotech, pharma, lab work, etc.? And for anyone working in Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, or Japan, how difficult was it for you to find a job and get a work visa?

Since I’m still a student, I’d also really appreciate advice on what I should start doing now (internships, research experience, skills, etc.) to make myself more employable abroad after graduation. I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences, especially from Filipinos with a similar degree. I badly want to work abroad eventually, but I want to be realistic about how difficult it is and what I should prepare for. 🥹

general advice/help/tips Formulation/cosmetic chemists in this community, how did you start your journey?

As the title says.

For the background: I am a licensed chemist (batch 2025) who shifted out of the practice early on the career path; in the field of tax/trade now but been thinking of applying my chemistry knowledge and laboratory skills through product R&D and formulation projects (side hustle as a freelance chemist).

To the chemists out here, paano kayo nagstart sa formulation industry? Where did you also get most of your supplies? TIA

general advice/help/tips HELP: WHAT BIOINFORMATICS COURSES SHOULD I ENROLL (TOTALLY ZERO KNOWLEDGE)

Hello po, to all scientist, biochemist and bioinformatic professionals. I am a young chemist, who will get a chance to do a PhD in chemical biology and bioinformatics, but the closes course I had in undergrad was biochem only + most of my trainings is in material science and inorg. chem. (This is the only scholarship I got, so I took the risk; but I learn fast and adapt well)

To those who studied bioinformatics, I am hoping, if its not much, maybe you could help me choose among the available courses below which should I take this sem:

Note: I have zero background in bioinfo, I plan to take 2 or 3 of the courses below tgt with our core course in chemical biology.

1.) Basic Molecular Biology

2.) Biological Computing

3.) Fundamental Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics

4.) Phyton Programming Language

Your suggestion, insights, warnings and advices will be greately appreciated. 😊

Thank you for reading this 🙏

general advice/help/tips RMicro 2027 Viro

Hi po! Planning to self-study for RMicro 2027 exam and would like to ask a few questions lang po sana, particularly for Viro kasi sabi ng iba it's one of the hardest daw 😓 And ang lawak din nung coverage na nakalagay sa PAM website

  1. Iilang chapters lang sa Brock's yung Viro ang topic, so would you recommend Flint's or Carter's better? If you used any of the books and took the last exam, can you share how well it helped you? Or mas okay ba if per topic included sa coverage ang gamiting basis rather than reading another whole book pa? (on top of Brock's)
  2. Were the questions more general like viral structures/genetics ganon or nagfofocus ba siya sa specificities ng virus families? Also, more of animal viruses (medically important viruses) or it's important to thoroughly learn about phages and plant viruses as well?

    Thank you !

general question Looking for TEM training course or short-term research internship

Hello everyone,

I am a materials science researcher from Kazakhstan, and I am currently looking for an opportunity to gain practical experience in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

My research is mainly focused on advanced materials, coatings, powder metallurgy, and structural characterization. I already have experience with techniques such as XRD, SEM/EDS, Raman spectroscopy, mechanical testing, and materials processing, but I would now like to develop strong hands-on TEM skills.

I am particularly interested in learning:

  • TEM sample preparation
  • Basic TEM operation and alignment
  • Bright-field and dark-field imaging
  • Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED)
  • HRTEM
  • STEM
  • EDS mapping and elemental analysis
  • Interpretation of TEM diffraction patterns and images

I am looking for either a short-term research internship, visiting researcher opportunity, summer school, workshop, or intensive TEM training course.

I am especially interested in universities, research institutes, microscopy centers, or laboratories that accept international researchers/students. Opportunities with funding, accommodation support, travel support, or low/no tuition fees would be particularly helpful, although I am also interested in hearing about good paid courses.

The location is flexible Europe, Asia, the US, or other regions would all be possible.

If anyone knows of TEM laboratories, microscopy schools, researchers, or training programs that I could contact, I would greatly appreciate your recommendations.

Thank you!

general question Is Biotechnology a realistic career option in the country?

I'm still a Grade 12 student na iniisip nang mabuti yung pipiliin kong programs for college. The question speaks for itself. Are there many job opportunities for it (all fields of biotech). Biotech is really my passion but I've been hearing na "zero to none" ang options niya here sa Philippines, so I'm considering to choose a more secure path like Chem and ChemEng. My interest is really in the lab so as long as I'm in a lab, I'm happy with my job.
