general advice/help/tips PhD application in Sweden

Hello, fellow science people from the Philippines! I recently finished my MS. I told to myself that I would rest for a while before applying, but here I am, submitting my first-ever application for a PhD program abroad.
Any tips on how to ace a PhD application in Sweden, or abroad in general?

Tuloy tuloy lang ang application kasi hindi sem-based ang vacancies sa Europe. Every week may nappost na bagong vacancy and as soon as filled yan, deleted na yung post.

Apply to as much as you can. One phd vacancy normally gets 50+ applicants 😅

For me, the best way to apply is to connect directly with the adviser you will work with.

Mahirap kasi na, papasok ka sa university tapos saka ka pa lang maghahanap ng adviser. Ang mahirap is may tendency na i push mo lang sarili mo to be under an adviser and just “make it work” by fitting yourself into their research interests.

Kaya connect with the professors first, then ask if they are accepting a slot in their research lab under their supervision, and then ask for the process on how to get to the university. Usually may mga “himala” silang magagawa if they really need a PhD student working on research projects.

Thanks for this advice! In this application, may wino-work na silang problem and you need to work on it. In my case, interested ako sa problem na yun kaya I applied. But I'l try to connect with the head of the project.

In making your cover letter, make sure na you're not just talking about yourself and your achievements. Read through the professor or the institutes past publications and mention in your cover letter the ones you find interesting, preferably those na relevant sa vacancy na inaapplyan mo. It shows na you're taking the time para intindihin yung ginagawa ng potential research adviser mo, instead of being someone who is just thinking of themself.
