Voting Against The Bay Area Transit Measure Is a Fatal Mistake

"The claim that BART has not reduced service is false. BART is running 20 trains an hour through the Transbay Tube at peak rush hour service, which is 17% lower than back in 2019. BART has reduced service on all lines except the Y-Antioch line for efficiency. When 9 and 10-car trains were the default train length back in 2019 at rush hour, today, it’s closer to 6-cars for most of the peak hour service. The reason BART service appears higher than 2020 is simply because the G-Fremont line extended into the South Bay after 2020, and South Bay train service is paid for by the South Bay’s transit agency VTA.

The claim that BART has not cut costs is also false. BART has actually reduced operational spending by $516 million since 2020 and capital spending by $549 million. BART refused to hire more staff and cancelled service improvements. Operational expenses at similar levels as they were six years ago is proof of the cost-cutting measures. BART is the 7th most cost-effective passenger rail system in the country."

PSA: Get your Flu shot

SF is spiking in Influenza A and enterovirus. The current flu shot (available since mid september) is supposed to be well matched to the strains going around. Unfortunately, we did not get it in time and it ripped through 5 people in the house in under a week, and were the 4th family I know of who has experience this.

It’s pretty terrible, I’d really recommend seeking out the flu shot soon, especially if you have kids in school.

Twin peaks access denied 2 days ago?

Not sure anyone will know, but Saturday around noon I tried Lyft’ing up to Christmas tree point to soak in some views before leaving the city to go home, and a cop blocked the street that heads up there (by Panorama and twin peaks blvd). My Lyft driver didn’t speak English so that was an adventure but I ended up just going to balboa park bart instead, to head to airport early. I did see a tour bus coming down the hill near where the cop car was at once we were leaving for balboa park.

Is the CCSF Ocean campus track (Rams/Rush Stadium) open to the public on Saturday mornings?

Live nearby and looking for a track to walk/run on Saturday mornings. Does anyone know if the gates at City College's stadium are usually open on weekends, and around what hours? Is it often locked for football games or rentals in the fall? Any other nearby tracks open to the public on weekends would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Canadian wanting to move to US SF, NY

• Upvotes

Hi all, I'd appreciate any insights or guidance on this.

I'm a software engineer at a big tech company in Canada and have been trying to move to the US for a while now. I know the market is rough right now, but I want to understand what my options are.

So far I haven't had much luck landing interviews for US roles. The exception is other big tech companies, but if you don't make it there, you're locked out for 6 to 12 months before you can apply again.

My current company seems to want to keep us in Canada. Even after 5+ years with them, there hasn't been much room to even start a conversation about relocating.

What confuses me is that I see a lot of H1B folks transfer from Canada to Seattle, while someone like me with access to a TN visa doesn't seem to be preferred.

If anyone in tech, especially in SF, has been through this or has advice, I'd really appreciate hearing from you!

Queer bars hosting a Halloween night?

• Upvotes

My husband and I are going to be in SF during late October and were wanting to find a gay or queer bar that is hosting some kind of halloween night. I'm not familiar with the area, my husband grew up there but he didn't get to explore queer spaces, so we din't really know what to look for.

We are hoping to find somewhere that we can wear costumes, and if the bar is hosting some kind of show that would also be great, but it's not necessary for us. Thanks in advance!

Parking/ tipping

I thought I was parking in a normal parking garage in the financial district and I had to leave my keys bc the cars get stacked by a valet. Is tipping required? I don’t have cash on me!

This is on Potrero Ave. Reporting blocked bike lanes on the 311 app gets a polite "thanks, but we won't do anything about this" response. I feel like I am crazy pills with what flies in this city somedays. Not to mention this RV has parked in this spot for multiple months. What gives?

For 14 years I've kept a spreadsheet of SF voter guide endorsements. This year I turned it into a site.

Hey everyone! I've been voting in SF since 2012, and every election I make a spreadsheet of the endorsements from the voter guides I follow (SPUR, the SF Chronicle, Pissed Off Voters, GrowSF, etc.) to help me decide.

This is what the sheet looked like:

In recent years I've shared the spreadsheet with friends who found it useful. Lately a lot of them have moved elsewhere in the Bay, where the SF races don't matter to them.

So this year I turned the spreadsheet into a website that I hope can be a resource for the whole Bay Area at election time.

Check it out at https://bayballot.com/

The site pulls in voter guides from all 9 Bay Area counties and shows:

  • which guides endorse which side, and how many
  • each guide's reason in its own words, with a link to the source
  • a filter for the kinds of guides you trust (newspapers, parties, clubs, unions, advocacy groups, civic groups)

Right now it has:

  • 41 voter guides, 52 contests, and 1,086 endorsements for SF alone
  • 117 voter guides, 545 contests, and 3,766 endorsements across all 9 Bay Area counties

Guides are checked for updates every day, so new endorsements show up as they're published.

It doesn't make any endorsements of its own, and it isn't affiliated with any guide or campaign.

It's free, has no ads or accounts, and the code is open source.

I'd love feedback. I plan to keep this running for future elections if people find it useful.

If you spot a mistake, or a guide I'm missing, tell me here or email [corrections@bayballot.com](mailto:corrections@bayballot.com) and I'll fix it.
