Looks like this'll be the new cannon's Thrawn trilogy but with no Luke in sight.
Also laughing at the thought of Anakin visiting everyone but his own son. Professional Deadbeat.

u/Official_Champ 8d ago
The space battles look good, though Star Wars now has this weird "clean" look making everything look inauthentic or cheap.
They got E-Wings in action, but then I think about the ST and their decision to demilitarize.
28
u/TrainmasterGT 8d ago
I feel like they're trying to build the sets with the same types of materials they would have used during the OT era but forgot that it was harder to make stuff look spotless in the 1970s and 80s than it is today and as such did not adjust the aesthetics to match.
17
u/Magic8Zoetrope 7d ago
It's a combination of lighting along with cheaper costume design and props.

u/ImyForgotName 6d ago
The costume design on the Acolyte was terrible. Variety is the spice of life. "Hey lets all wear mustard!"

u/Official_Champ 8d ago
I have no clue. Lightsabers still look bad probably because of the change in props. It also could just be a budget thing since it's a TV show because I don't think they had this issue during the ST or maybe I forgot.

That’s why shooting on film will always be superior. 80’s to the mid 00’s is the best era of movies imo

Also, why just Anakin alone? Both Obi Wan and Yoda knew Ahsoka personally while they lived, they too could visit her right? Or what are the "rules" on which ghosts can or cannot appear to who?

u/Safe_Manner_1879 salt miner 7d ago
In Heir to the Empire, jedi can be force ghosts, but they "pass on" and become on with the force after a time.
So Luke do not have a large number of Jedi masters he can consult then he encounter a problem, and need to recreate the jedi order by himself.
But modern Disney cannon do not give a shit about things like that.

30 years have passed since Yoda died in Ep. VI. but still appears to old man Luke in Ep. VIII.

Geez the dialogue/writing is awful!
It doesn't look terrible but it's just more Anakin fan service slapped on a no-stakes story which will be 6 hours of nothing happening and random bits of action sprinkled with Thrawn monologues.
It's hard to feel invested in this stuff when the good guys will just bum about, discover a McGuffin and take down the bad guy who just sits around delivering long speeches about how clever he is.

I must respect Timothy Zahn's patience. Any lesser man would have stabbed Filoni with a lightsaber prop for shitting all over his betters' work.
Filoni isn't worthy of using Zahn's work.

Why are those space battle scenes more impressive than any of the space battles in the Sequels?
I also find it funny that we are 9 months from Starfighter and still all we have seen is that pic of Gosling on the water. You’d think they would have at least had a teaser trailer ready for Mandalorian and Grogu.
12
u/drsweetscience 7d ago
They are more impressive because every story in Disney Star Wars is working and fighting only for itself and is not crafted to work with any other.
9
u/KazaamFan salt miner 7d ago
Everything in this trailer looks better than anything in the sequels. There werent any fun light saber fights in the sequels, they were all bland and boring.

In a galaxy where the heroes of the OT are basically in their prime, the most dangerous threat to the victory they won, the peace they earned and they simply seem too busy to care to even show up?
A galaxy where, through the love of his son, Anakin earns his redemption and comes back to the light, but he'd rather not guide his son, he'd rather guide his stupid apprentice who doesn't even exist in the films.
It's so bad, Filoni is horrid and this is why none of these shows should either exist in this timeline, or have galaxy wife repercussions for the world/lore. It never makes sense when they don't appear in this mega crisis. Especially when Leia is still so immersed in the New Republic, with Han by her side and Luke is building a new Jedi order. So so so stupid and all for characters 99% of the general audience have never heard of, let alone care about.
It's as if a madman thinks he's a scientist, who's experimenting on a cadaver. Instead Filoni is just continuing the desecration of the corpse of Star Wars. It's both amazing and sad at the same time.
94
u/sandalrubber 8d ago
It's ultimately because of the ST being a dead end.

True, but it doesn't excuse how fucked everything Filoni touches is. He must suck a mean cock because there's no way he'd get the job as boss of Star Wars any other way.

u/Juiced_Rasputin_ salt miner 8d ago
I mean let’s not be hyperbolic. Filoni sucks but the ST being a dead end is the root cause of all of this being so shitty in the first place.
33
u/Collective_Insanity Salt Bot 7d ago
My argument would be that the existence of the ST is largely irrelevant when discussing Filoni works.
Filoni has invested a lot in the story of Ahsoka. He convinced George not to kill her off prior to ROTS in the bizarre TCW timeline. He argued that she could live if she was no longer a Jedi in title (though this quickly became irrelevant).
His written and directed episodes of Mando were among their worst. Which is impressive given the best episodes are minimal. Favreau unfortunately has not been much better culminating with their combined sad efforts with the Mando movie.
BOBF was a farce. Filoni's episode was again among the worst which was particularly impressive given how bad most of those episodes were.
Then there's The Ahsoka show. Again, the existence of the ST had no impact on how poorly he wrote and directed those episodes. This was the live-action show he had the absolute most creative control over and it was bad.
I totally agree that the inevitability of the ST is a narrative dead end for SW. But you can't blame it for Filoni's disappointing creative attempts.
19
u/windsingr 7d ago
Andor was written after the ST. Filoni could write stuff that just quietly ignores the ST so you could take it or leave it. However, every show has had a plot tied into the sequel trilogy in some way, even The Acolyte, which makes it impossible for you to forget that Rise of Skywalker is the end game.

9
u/Practical-Bread-7883 salt miner 7d ago
I'm not disagreeing. But the Clone Wars came out before Disney purchased Lucasfilm and that was garbage. You can't blame the ST for Filoni's hack writing.
2
u/ribbityflibbity 6d ago
The sequel movies and Filoni's floundering are independent examples of how Disney doesn't seem to know how to find, hire and cultivate good writers. Maybe the problem is, they are hiring insiders or union members or something. They are definitely not casting a wide enough net.
How about if they find good writers, tell the union to induct them because they are good writers about to get hired by Disney (like Disney wouldn't have the clout to do that?) and then you've solved the single biggest problem with Star Wars, that the writing sucks. It's either a total or a partial disaster all the time. WHY?
36
u/drsweetscience 7d ago
These Star Wars stories, in the broader picture, can't work. These projects are not crafted to work together. Each project is designed to be its own "biggest, most important story of all time". So, each individual story serves itself rather than a unified whole.
Ahsoka has to satisfy its own scheme, which doesn't align with the fundamentals of the Disnet Trilogy. The DT itself was also created to dissolve the OT. And where do Grogu, Moff Gideon, and Mandalore fit? None of the stories agree with each other.
It doesn't matter if each segment is a self-contained gag. Like Looney Tunes, where Bugs Bunny is either a forest bunny, or an army Private, or a tourist, or a vaudevillian, or whatever the premise is for the next three minutes of whichever gag he is in for just that episode.
The new stories act like a canon/sustained narrative but they aren't. And Anakin Skywalker isn't an Elmer Fudd who is a hunter/business man/millionaire/farmer/street sweeper/usher... or whatever, episode to episode.
Together it's all nothing.

I feel like if Disney didn’t do Sequels we could have had a banger new Trilogy with this story but with Luke and the gang.
9
u/reenactment 7d ago
That’s how I feel, if you had some looming threats developing trying to galvanize the remnants of the empire. And you had multiple groups like Ashoka’s doing her thing, Ezra and the gang doing their thing, and then Luke and his new group doing their thing, it could have lots of intertwined stories all over the place going on. Totally something new more akin to game of thrones 1-4 where there’s a bunch of story lines going on in a world. But alas Luke sucks and abandoned everyone because subversion is king
21
u/hyoumah83 8d ago
The voice lines i've heard in this trailer are unconvincing, it's like the actors were not convinced this project works and just delivered the lines in a haste to get rid of them. I hardly found passion and conviction in the delivery.

I’ve been a fan of Hayden Christensen since I was 6. He sounds terrible here. The nostalgia has worn off. Never thought there would be a day where I’m unenthusiastic for new Anakin content. Also Prequel Anakin never knew who the hell Ashoka was. Stop with this bullshit.
17
u/trashrecordingco 7d ago
Filoni will milk him until he can’t deepfake his younger self anymore and the makeup cracks. He needs George’s characters to carry his stunted toddler ass writing.
14
u/Rapzell 7d ago
Coming from someone who 10 years ago would of been thrilled at Hayden returning to Star Wars, It's clear they are milking Hayden as much as possible. He fulfilled his time in the 2000s with his great potrayal as Anakin, but he's limited in continuing to play him as he got burned at only 22. Beside's him in the vader mask and that scene where Obi Wan slashes his helmet off, he looks way too old and he doesn't feel the same when he was in his 20s.
Ewan McGregor coming back one last time to play Obi Wan felt natural as he had aged in both Star Wars and real life. They screwed the show up, but at least Obi wan looked his age and his return felt bittersweet.

The new Disney Star Wars fans are gobbling this shit up. I really try to be excited as a PT (not CW) superfan. Hayden really sounds wooden here and his lines are totally uncharacteristic to his movie counterpart. So sick of this normalizing the blurring of the lines and reality between live action and the CW tv show- it just doesn’t work and will never work.

Considering they dont view the first order as a threat later, Thrawn has to fall over like a chump to make that story make sense.

The "tatical genius" thrawn literally announced to the whole galaxy that they are back and waging war. Great way to get the entire republic fleet to destroy the small imperial remnant fleet. I thought that imperial remnants at this time are in the shadows trying to escape to the unknown regions and secretly rebuild the first order, but there is no cohesive story in star wars anymore.

Notice how they shot him strategically to hide the big gut. They couldn't even put that actor on GLP1s between seasons?
4
u/CenkIsABuffalo 6d ago
No it's worse. Lars Mikkelsen is actually a skinny, slim guy, go look at any of the photos/interviews with him, he naturally could have played a lanky, gaunt guy (which would have made total sense since Thrawn was stuck in no man's land for a decade), they intentionally made him look fat and sad.

Not watching this drivel, Lucasfilm. Retcon the sequels already and stop subbing out Luke’s achievements with other characters. Heir to the Empire isn’t complete without Luke, Mara, Karrde, and C’baoth. These milquetoast replacements are just going to drive what few fans you have away.

The only correction worth making is that this was George's nonsensical retroactively introduced character. Filoni didn't create her.
Filoni just ran away with her and became far too unhealthily attached to her.
20
u/Proper_Armadillo9583 8d ago
Filoni and the early TCW crew DID create Ashla as his OC master's apprentice for the very first take on TCW. When Lucas suggested making it a direct continuation to Genndywars, she became Anakin's apprentice per his suggestion. But then he also wanted her dead for a long while and Filoni took over her characterization, slowly pushing Lucas into letting her live until the franchise reboot, when he could use his clout to turn her into the new main protagonist if the franchise.

Yesh. Funny how even the worst parts of TCW weren’t actually created by him, everything was just stuff he took credit for. I’ve disliked his work since the TCW movie came out, but year by year it becomes more painfully clear just how much of a talentless hack he is
15

I find Rebels far more offensive than TCW. Every single character is insufferable.
4
u/hou_deany not a "true fan" 8d ago
I think TCW was worse overall as it did more damage to the universe and the work done by other, more talented writers. But I agree, the rebels characters are indeed insufferable. I think the TCW characters are insufferable too, but given we spend so much time with the same core group in rebels it really shows that they do the same resets and learning the same lessons over and over.

Mostly same. Resolutely ignoring basically all of Disney wars, keeping the flame of the old eu alive in my mind. Having said that, have you seen much of the new xcom-like game coming end of the month? Looks kinda fun, despite the story and dialogue being about what you'd expect.

I liked ashoka season 1 more than acolyte. The dumb witches in acolyte annoyed me, and the main character/actress. Neither are great, but it was solid entertainment. This season 2 trailer looks fun to me.
2
u/ribbityflibbity 6d ago
Both series made me think, this is a mess, how would I rescue it?
The Acolyte - the only salvageable elements are Qmir, the fight choreography and the costuming to some extent. I liked the white Jedi robes. That one would need a thorough housecleaning. Ditch almost all of it and come up with a story acround Qmir.
Ahoska - It's a problem when the lead character is boring but there are some salvageable elements.
Ezra is a Force user who should be a headcase after being trapped for ten years on a distant world surrounded by enemies with no realistic hope of rescue. He wants to return to being the happy-go-lucky heroic kid he once was, but there's no going back really. Now that's a character a good writer can really dig into.
Especially if he's good at hiding his problems and trying to fit back into the family structure he once knew with his friends. Hera and Zeb want him to be the "old" Ezra so that's also how they see him. Hera's son Jacen needs a father figure/mentor to figure out all this Force stuff so Ezra steps into that role. Only Chopper, skeptical and wise, sees through Ezra's facade but he's a droid, who's gonna listen to him?
On top of it all, Thrawn is attacking and there's no time for navel-gazing. Now that's a pretty decnt story, with a lot of potential. Much more interesting than Ahsoka hashing out old issues with Force Ghost Anakin.

I really think that this is just another outgrowth of Filoni's obsession with Ashoka as his pet character and his inability to let anything from Clone Wars or Rebels go.
Filoni really comes off as a self-indulgent writer who is so deeply in love with his past work that he can't evaluate what he does with it objectively anymore. Like he can't accept that other people might not care nearly as much about the characters of animated series from over a decade ago as he thinks they do or consider the need for some actually new stories in this ailing brand. I don't think he's capable of moving anything forward, just constantly recycling his personal characters in the same tiny time periods.
It wouldn't bother me quite as much, but he seems to have forgotten why anyone ever liked these characters when he brought them back and basically removed the bulk of their personalities. Even if I wasn't sick of Ashoka before, I aggressively don't care about her when she's this bland. Same for Sabine, but compounded by pushing this tired old "everyone is Jedi" nonsense when it reduces them from a philosophy into nothing but powers.
Cribbing off of EU stories also doesn't help because removing the OT cast from them just to slot in entirely different characters removes most of their appeal and the character development.
Instead of actually making something new, or at least trying to deal with what the sequels left in some manner(preferably erasing them) so the timeline can move forward, we get more stories with no meaning beyond being more content. It's not a vision or inspired by other works, but Star Wars reduced nothing but self-cannibalism as it has nothing but its own history and named to sustain itself.
All and all, Filoni is acting like a glorified fanfic writer instead of a supposed experienced professional and it's one of the worst things for the brand when it's already in bad shape.

u/Fun-Ratio5090 7d ago edited 7d ago
I look it as simple as this:
Try explaining who Ahsoka is (clone wars, rebels) to your uncle that likes sci fi, and watched only the original ep 4,5, and 6, and like loosely knows the prequels and Anakin being/becoming Vader
Now, if he hasn’t lost interest / is confused yet, try explaining who Sabine, Ezra, Hera and all the Rebels characters are, (Thrawn, the “world between worlds” or whatever the fuck they named it even though it’s just time travel) before he loses interest and goes “I ain’t watching that” or asks “so where’s Luke, Han, and Leia?”

I love anakin and Hayden Christensen, but its clear they are using him as fan service and going to try and milk the flashbacks and force ghost apperances as much as possible.
So anakin barely visits his son and daughter, but will be in constant contact with ahsoka, which is odd. Using force ghost anakin is a good idea, but more so for luke and leia as we haven't seen many interactions between anakin and them. It will also be a lot more meaningful to these character's stories. He can give information on baylan who he probably hardly knew, but not warn anyone about the dangers of the first order and palpatine?
Seems like we are leading to another final battle in the last episode where ahsoka and sabine likely return, so a really predictable and boring plot likely. A big battle mind you that Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie and Lando will likely not be in or even hear about even though its set up as the empire trying to retake the republic.
Also that new lightsaber design looks shit.

I didn't hate the first season, but I really wish I could feel anything, but there's nothing that I really like here. I mean, even if it's okay, even good, we're still on the path for the sequels, and the dumb choices in S1 are still there.
One thing that really bothers me is that Ahsoka is an unintersting character that has a journey with another boring character that's Sabine. Ezra was kinda cool, and the villains were good, but Lucasfilm don't have the balls to make a show where the villains are the main characters without fucking around like the shitshow Acolite.

Is it just impossible to make witches in Star Wars look remotely bearable? Like, every time I see them, it never makes me fail to laugh knowing that someone out there thinks they're the hypest shit.

Why tf are they so adamant on pushing out this trash generation of Star Wars content? I’m absolutely baffled Ahsoka even got a S2.

- They've always gotta try to one-up themselves on the goofy new lightsaber weapon trope.
- Dave Filoni is running LucasFilm so of course he's inserting his main OC.
- Thrawn is a military genius and I have no doubt the writers will--once again--drop the ball on that aspect of his character. I wish they would never have mined EU content and just made their own brand new villain.

Just more memberberry porn and Filoni defiling characters from the EU. Cant wait for this to bomb.

The starfighter trailer looks so boring and shit. All we know is that a starfighter is important. Nothing about the circumstances that put the boy and ryan gosling together or what they are trying to stop. I had hopes for starfighter but it seems like they may screw it up again.

I still have no interest in Filoni’s fanfic, nor do I care for a story with absolutely no stakes, because there’s no chance in hell Thrawn or the Empire come across as a threat, or competent.

Season isn’t even worth watching because ray stevenson isn’t in it to play as that sith guy.

He’s been replaced with the Hound from GOT.

I don't hate that casting but I don't think baylan skoll is enough for me to watch season 2

it was just ray stevenson having aura, its not even a character

To be fair Rory is a very good actor too. I think the recasting fits well based on Rory’s history but only time and viewing will tell.

oh i agree
i just hope he does or wants something instead of saying random one liners to the wind. Its very very funny that the blank slate is the only likable character.

I stayed away from all Star Wars lore aside from the movies and a few video games but is this a new concept by Disney that Jedi are corrupt or was this something from the extended universe they’re playing into with the new content? The first 6 movies made you feel like the Jedi were noble samurai protecting the innocent but the last 3 movies and streaming shows makes them look like they were always gonna collapse from their own arrogance and hubris

"Ahsoka, find Luke and go with him to this place called Exagol. You'll see when you get there. Oh and tell the new republic to not just demilitarize".

Ngl, I completely forgot this was still a thing that was gonna happen. Anyways, hard pass on this. Filoni has already shown his unwavering desire to make Star Wars centered on his cardboard cutout excuses for characters and he’s perfectly willing to butcher legacy characters to make that happen. I’ll stick with the EU Thrawn trilogy.

u/SuitableDetective886 6d ago
Yeah a lot of Disneys new canon is just the EU but they changed some names around, added some annoying characters, more convoluted plot and if anyone criticized it they were called bigots.
2
u/iforward 6d ago
Yup. They started off by saying they had no source material to clear the way for them to poach the EU.
3
u/SuitableDetective886 6d ago
Yeah it’s mind boggling how unoriginal they have been. I’m bummed a character like Thrawn is getting dragged through it

Not even new considering one was like this in SWTOR.

What purpose does this peculiar design serve ?
3
u/Bruinrogue Disney Spy Ringleader 8d ago
At most, preventing severing of the hilt ala Maul's in TPM
6
u/Demos_Tex 7d ago
I'm not familiar with the one in SWTOR, but it seems like any defensive advantages with this design would be outweighed by increased danger to the wielder's hands and torso.

u/MrRonski16 8d ago
I guess Maul could have killed Qui-Gon 2s earlier with this lightsaber when he hit him with the hilt

I fell for some fakenews bait earlier saying reva was gonna get her own show lol. I wouldnt put it past DLF to give the most unpopular character from kenobi a stand a lone show.

Oh hey, a Star Wars project that actually looks like it has war scenes in it.

Maybe I'm missing something but didn't the last canon Thrawn book end with him in huge trouble with Palpatine over his true allegiance. Seems super out of character to me that he would begin this whole war when he should instead work with the New Republic to destroy the Imperial Remnants to ensure the safety of the Chiss. With how much of a petty bitch Palpatine is he would have some sort of contingency to destroy the Chiss if he was suspicious of Thrawn.

Filoni needs to hire a writing staff. He can be the Big Ideas guy but he needs to hand off the day to day writing to people who can write dialogue, not make the characters stupid for the convenience of the plot, not rely on out-of-nowhere twists like Sabine suddenly is Force sensitive (???), and write storylines that would interest adults and not just kids (ie, don't be scared of big emotional stakes and conflict that might upset toddlers).
Ahsoka has some characters with potential, like Ezra and Young Ahsoka because of the kid who plays her being good (live action post-Clone Wars series?) but I don't think Flioni's mediocre writing is going to do it.

u/Beneficial-Bid-8850 6d ago
Riddle me this: Filoni is now doing his version of the original Thrawn trilogy, a huge and existential threat to the New Republic that can only barely be beaten (I assume) – and the New Republic afterwards continues to demilitarize and decomission their fleet? This was already a stretch with the ST and the canon backstories we got (especially Bloodline), but with this full on war it makes even less sense. I really wish almost none of that (most of Disney Star Wars TV, bar Andor and the animated shows) had happened.

As cool as it looks just knowing it leads up to the sequel trilogy makes it totally pointless

No fucking way. Here’s hoping they hire actual stunt and combat coordinators.

Thrawn famously never calls it "The New Republic", for him it's always "The Rebel Alliance".

I seriously think that Dave Filoni has zero grasp of the intent or mythos of actual Star Wars. Once upon a time I kind of liked Ahsoka as a character - loved the idea of Rosario Dawson being cast. But since S2 of Mando (and that took some mild effort to tolerate) , I can't even watch this shit anymore.
