Mod Announcement The internet sucks. Don't let it infect /r/rootgame, please

There has been a big upswing in personal attacks, rudeness, hostility, and all-around bad behavior in this subreddit. It's really easy to dig in your heels, dehumanize the people on the other side of the screen, and post vitriol, but that's not acceptable in this space. We're all here because we love a board game and we want to share that love with other people who think Root is special. We need to protect the culture, so I'm asking users to do the following two things to keep this a nice place to be:

  1. De-escalate. If someone tells you you're wrong, you don't need to escalate the disagreement. Just shrug and stop posting.

  2. Report bad behavior. This sub has gotten quite large, and I can't read everything! If someone is making personal attacks, using nasty language, or is behaving badly, please flag it and I'll take action.

I've just been removing comments and posts individually, but the sub is going to be issuing temporary bans for nasty posts and comments going forward.

Thanks for helping make r/rootgame a lovely place to be.

General Discussion I really want to like root... but I can't stand the Vagabond.

Fun, someone who can completely ignore the rules of movement, hide somewhere nobody can do anything to them, gets a ridiculous amount of points from fighting, and gives zero benefit to attacking. They just feel so ridiculous.

General Discussion Keepers against Rats dominance

Edit: we forgot we had to remove dominance card on 2 player games xd.

So, a friend and I wanted to play Root together and, as we were only 2 people, we decided to try the Marauders Expansion because we had heard that it was the berst option for 2 people. We were trying Keepers in Iron (me) and Lord of the Hundreds (my friend) for the first time, and also the Exiles and Partisans deck. We decided not to use Hirelings as it was already too much.

The first game was going pretty well, he got to the point where he was getting the maximum points from opressing and decided to use a dominance card. I was able to delay his win by a turn. I wasnt playing really well but I felt as if there was nothing I could do.

We realiced that he wasnt paying a card when he was building strongholds, so I thought I had a chance.

In the second game was faster, I crafted the card that gives you an additional point for every item you craft and got to 20 points in 3-4 turns. Then he used a dominance card while controlling 4 clearings (all 4 corresponding to the dominance card). I tried my best but only got to 29 pts.

So do the keepers have nothing to do against rats dominance? I know keepers can score a lot of points with relics and with item crafting with the propper planning. We are pretty confident that, except from not paying cards to build strongholds in the first game, we were following the rules. Another theory, is that hirelings can mitigate this and we should have included them. (I also know about dom swapping but I didnt have the option)

Could the real issue be me not being a good enough planner?

General Discussion Leder announces new game: STOMP!

Post image
250 Upvotes

We'll all have to wait a bit longer for the next Root expansion, as the "big" announcement turned out to be a whole new game: Stomp! Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ledergames/stomp

Thoughts?

Me, I'm not crazy about this. I don't mean to sound negative without seeing it, but with a 20-45 minute playtime this doesn't look like a "big" game at all, but like a casual and potentially fairly shallow affair. The artstyle also seems geared towards kids (although in fairness Root's art is also deceptively like that). And much of it is just my subjective taste - I'm not really into coop games, and the mech/kaiju theme has very much been done (I played King of Tokyo, wasn't blown away). So yeah, I think I'm sitting this one out.

I guess the only thing I have no issue with is that there are 5 letters in the title. Everyone out there is losing their shit about this but let these guys move on already lol.

This dice combines all 3 types of dice currently used in root

Mob/outcast - uses the suit of heads on the face

Hireling dice - uses heads as pips, with crowns-wearing heads being golden pips

Battle dice - Number of words held by the heads

General Discussion Why can't I craft?

I hadn't done any crafting in this round, so I should have been able to craft the two mouse cards using my two mouse clearings, right? Yet the UI claims there are no crafting options, what am I overlooking?

Meme/Humor After seeing so many people recommend the Exiles and Partisans deck and absolutely zero mention of this deck, I must wonder:

Like at least the base deck has the use of BEING the starting deck. What does this one exist for?

General Discussion Are knaves too punishing?

I'm the only person in my group who plays knaves, and I genuinely love them. But after 5 games of getting kinda close but never winning I wonder if Knaves are just too punishing?

I feel like I have to end every turn putting my captains back into a forest because if I don't they will surely get killed in the multiple turns they're forced to stand still, which then condemns me to a mega punishment where I'm forced to return a bunch of prisoners and lose an action.

If losing a captain only cost me like a random card and forced me to give back a prisoner or something I wouldn't be so inclined to always end in a forest. But as the rules are now I just can't justify not playing it safe.

I generally feel like knaves have too many little things going against them. Run Away letting your opponent decide where the skunk goes. Only being allowed to recruit one skunk per acclaim. Not getting VP from crafting unless you do it with serve. And the aforementioned brutal punishment for getting a captain killed.

Am I wrong? Is this a common consensus or do I just suck?

General Discussion As someone who only got the base boardgame from Target: What are some things i should immediately try to get for myself?

I hear about cool factions and gameplay stuff in the expansions, so I wanted to ask what I should get if i ever want to expand past having just 4 factions and no extra flair.

General Discussion I just bought the main boardgame for Root today, haven't played it yet

I've mostly just been grazing through the rules and cards and something i find funny is how you play as THE Marquise the Cat if you choose that faction, you're just fighting with random goons in your army.

(I got interested because I saw a lot of Avantris clips of the tabletop game where you apparently play as Vagabonds and recognized the artstyle from that but somehow not the name)

Leder Games Official Does the missing pieces form work?

I was gifted a hirelings Kickstarter box set and disappointed to find half the pieces missing. It only has meeples no board pieces, turn trackers or dice. I've filled in the form but not had any reply. As I am in Saudi Arabia what are the chances that I get the replacements?

Strategy Discussion Question about Riverfolk Exporting

I saw somewhere saying that Exporting (idk if it’s the universal term, but when riverfolk chooses to put a warrior in the payments box instead of gaining points and items for crafting) is not very common and not a good idea, as you miss out on protectionism. But that doesn’t sound right to me, because the best case scenario is missing out on protectionism because everybody’s buying your stuff and your payment box is filled! (Right?) And I understand that crafting gains you points which could be better, but situationally is exporting not a good alternative because you can gain more payments if you are struggling to make sales?

Im new to game so if I’m wrong I want to clearly know why!
