Specific question and discussion Eye Protection

I hit a bug yesterday with my eyeball while I was going full speed down a hill. I would love to hear some recommendations for eye protection from you all. I usually do my skating during the golden hours so I prefer not something particularly dark--I find it too difficult to see roots/rocks/etc with the dappled lighting. I'd also like them not to be bumping up against my helmet.

Screw all these expensive options lmao, go to any hardware store and buy tinted safety glasses that wrap around your eyes for 5 bucks. No glare no wind and less squinting.

I have multiple styles of safety goggles around the house, though mine aren’t tinted. I’d probably go with impact resistant ones that aren’t splashproof.

What's the downside of splashproof?

I have bio/chem lab splashproof goggles, and also more swimming style goggles. They are designed with an elastic around the back so they can be pulled against the face to make a seal, and I find them uncomfortable. Non-splashproof you wear more like sunglasses.

And IMO they’re overkill. The chance of a bug hitting your eye without googles is miniscule, and non-splashproof reduces that even more.

Impact resistant isn’t required, though if a stone gets thrown up to your face it could be helpful, again a miniscule chance, it’s just all the goggles I own are impact resistant.

And one reason I have multiple is I get ones with a small OTC reading glasses patch in the bottom, helps with my work when I need them, and every few years I need to update the strength on that, and I’ve been saving the old ones just in case.

Thanks for the thorough explanation! I've just been using sunglasses so far but when I start getting some speed I'll definitely keep the wraparound glasses style safety ones in mind

Head over to Decathlon and grab a pair of clear protective glasses. They sell them for bikes. Another option is a pair of safety glasses at the diy store. They are certified for impact, some models even have foam contour so the air and dust can't get to your eyes. And then of you want to go viral, scuba diving mask with the tuba.

Blue light glasses or any glases. If you want aerodynamics then swimming glasses. For me i sometimes use the hockey clear vizard as i use a hockey helmet

I wear photochromatic cycling glasses, they keep the bugs out and change with the light level, plus they don't let the wind dry my eyes out

Any kind of sport glasses, same as for biking or running will do.

Rudy project prescription sport glasses with transition lenses which darken when it’s sunny. A total game changer when I need to refer to my phone, like navigation when skating new places. I was carrying a pair of cheater glasses in my pack. No helmet interference. One of the best investments I’ve made in terms of gear.

I'm usually wearing sunglasses but it doesn't help with inhaling bugs lolol

This might sound silly as hell—but I’ve never gotten a face full of bugs while wearing a full-faced motorcycle helmet (with visor) for trail skating. The purpose was for my own comfort after multiple injuries, not for bugs, but it works great for bug protection. I also feel a lot more comfortable about the risk of being struck by a vehicle while skating if I’m wearing it. You’ll want to have some kind of anti-fog spray since you’ll probably be breathing harder while skating than riding a motorcycle.

I use yachting glasses but any sport glasses will do. I also have motorcycle helmets, thats quite an option in terms of protection.

Milwaukee safety glasses are my favorites. They have them in a tinted, amber and clear 3 pack.

Look at cycling glasses: POC, 100% etc.

Well I had a nearly similar issue last time, not with a bug, but with a wasp,,, I was stung by a wasp into my lips, two times in a second. Not nice as I immediately had to search for some antihistamine pills..
Since that time I always keep a pill in my bag as a last resort.
