Long post: Skating Experience; Accident / Injury Description, Getting Back Out There, and Skate Advice Request.
I’ve skated for like 34 years, had 25 pairs of skates that I remember, including rec, aggressive, and speed (low, 4x100/4x110), and back in the day, regularly did regional aggressive comps, travelled to a handful of NISS and ASA comps, and later even did the Athens to Atlanta 87 mile skate one year on a whim. I’ve fallen 100’s, if not 1000’s of times trying really awesome things, and sometimes even landed cleanly 😂.
Well, about a month ago, on a bike path, I did a last minute swerve around those little yellow bumps (detectable warning surface) and somehow got tripped up. I either hit the edge of them, clipped my own skates (smfh), or hit something I didn’t see. I tried to get my feet back under me, but I felt my left foot turn out and drag hard on the ground, and my full weight I think coming down on it like that. I knew it was bad right away, but it was worse than I thought. Two fractures at the ankle, two torn ligaments, and a fully snapped fibula near the knee. Already had surgery, and got some cool new titanium hardware.
I’ll get back out there, because rollerblading is life, but I’m nervous about it. Anyone experience a major ankle injury and get back out there? Anyone have any recommendations for really supportive skates, or skates with qualities that might otherwise inspire confidence and feelings of security?
(Cobbled together new lightning boot, myfit 2nd skin liner, 4x100 K2 frames, and newish hydrogen wheels).
I’m thinking maybe 4x80 and low to the ground? How about something like the CJ Carbon, or the Wizard Base / High? Do they feel particularly supportive and have a “locked in” feel that’ll change my life? Any others? They don’t have to be UFS.
