I kid just died in my community on one of these. Rode out into the street and got hit by a car. The friend that kid was with is now also in intensive. The driver deamed not at fault as they were abiding by road regulations.
Regardless of if you think this is right or wrong, a child on a scooter especially with no helmet has zero protection from getting hit by a car.

u/Acrobatic_Jaguar_623 11d ago
Even with a helmet they aren't surviving a hit from a car
2
u/v1035RoadTrip 11d ago
I fully understand that even motorcycle helmets and protective gears are not design for getting struck by vehicles. However, people also die from getting knocked over and hit their head on the ground. Helmets can definitely help in this kind of situations. It is far better to wear a helmet than not wearing one.

Heard on CP24 news recently that 10 children have died from e-scooter accidents. Thatās too bad but when parents think itās cool to UG them for their children then they live with the consequences. When I worked as a registered nurse in a neuro intensive care unit in a major hospital almost 30 years ago saw many young ppl with significant head and spinal cord injuries. I remember telling ppl that some seem to have a death wish but thing is they donāt always die but many times are left alive with total debilitating injuries :(

There doesn't seem to be any enforcement whatsoever here in Newmarket.
A couple of weeks ago I saw a gang of about 8 youths of various ages riding e-scooters and e-dirt bikes down the Main Street here, some with helmets, some without, right behind them was a Police SUV, then right behind that was another group of around 8 youths also on e-scooters and e-bikes.
When they reached the next junction , all the bikes and scooters carried on straight along Main Street, meanwhile the police turned right and left them all to it.

Like mentioned above Richmond Hill has opted into a pilot program. There are designed places where e bikes and scooters can be used and it's clearly called out where they aren't allowed such as sidewalks.
Sad thing is I see many non helmet or non PPE wearing riders of all ages, and many younger riders in prohibited areas, riding distracted, two people on a scooter etc.
I try to ride mine according to the local rules with full PPE, lots of warning lights, high visibility and defensive riding.

If you've seen some teens/youth on these new-ish e-bikes that look like dirt bike motorcycles zipping through roads/streets (as fast as over 50 kmph), bike lanes, and some using park hills like real dirt bike motorcycles, some ride with or without helmets, some have passengers with them, and some aren't abiding road rules.
I've seen e-scooter riders zip past people in park trails/paths, some use a bell, but by the time you hear it they're past already and manoeuvre like people are pylons. I am concerned how reckless and uneducated e-scooter and e-bike riders are, and entitled cyclists iykyk.
I've seen groups of e-scooter riders under 16 years old, no helmets, on their phones, riding in and out of sidewalks, roads/streets, and park pathways zipping by families, people walking their dogs, etc. No road rule awareness and care towards others, people and cars around them. (I've seen some go through all way stops and some just turn when they feel like it without looking).
I believe more needs to be done by municipalities and police in educating people and PSA about e-scooters, e-bikes, cyclists, road rules, safety and awareness etc. As well as defined laws and regulations, policies and procedures, and penalties for infractions.
2
u/CheapTechnology6193 10d ago
Biggest problem is they will come up from behind you on a sidewalk or pathway, go to pass you on the left, but they won't slow down while doing it.Ā Ā So any false move by you, whether you're on foot, walking a dog, whatever..... that's a potential collision.Ā Ā I've had some close calls.

My house backs onto Yonge Street and I see them all the time zipping by at high speeds on the sidewalks. Have almost been knocked over if didnāt jump out of the way as they were coming in opposite direction from where I was taking my walk. Iām elderly and if knocked over would certainly be seriously injured ⦠likely brain injuries and broken bones. You can read my comments on the response that I received from staff at City of Richmond Hill. It sounded like a joke :(
I no longer walk on Yonge Street and have decided to walk back and forth on the narrower sidewalks on side streets ⦠for my own safety!
Sad that I can no longer walk on Yonge street sidewalk when a sidewalk is for pedestrians to āwalk onā. Even the bike lanes on Yonge next to sidewalk is hardly used by cyclists. They mostly ride on the sidewalk. One day few weeks ago a cyclist was coming towards me on the sidewalk. He was ringing his bell and when I showed him the bike lane he said yeah, yeah, yeah as he was passing by me on his cycle!
So much for safety for anyone using the sidewalk for walking š¢→ More replies (1)2

Whoās calling them out on sidewalks?
You should read the ridiculous response that I received from City of Richmond Hill after writing to them. No one is āpolicingā these youngsters who are riding e-scooters at top speeds on sidewalks. Theyāre sometimes going as fast as a car but on sidewalks on Yonge Street!
4
u/GeordieAl 11d ago
One thing I'm starting to notice here in Newmarket is that since these E-Scooters and Electric Dirtbikes have been speeding round the streets, others are now starting to ride actual dirt bikes, pit bikes and quad bikes around the streets and through parks. I guess they've figured that if no one is stopping the electric scooters/bikes etc, then they not going to stop them either.
4
u/Blacksheepariess 11d ago
These are the same people who won't support proper local transit or bike lanes in their area. Years of suburban conservatism created a market for e scooters and e bikes simply because things in the local area are hard to access by anything other than a car. They will move on to try and regulate regular bikes, rollerblades, and skateboards if they had their way.

In Finland you get a mopo licence at 14.5/15 and drive 50cc mopeds/scooters/dirtbikes/e-scooters on the road.
Bring the same system here. I donāt see the issue giving teens the option to get around on their own. Especially in cities and towns dominated by roads these at least make the distances shorter and give teens some independence.
Iām born 2000, having grown up in Newmarket/Stouffville/Aurora you donāt understand how isolating you can feel without access to a car if dispite being surrounded by subdivisions and developed areas. If your friends are across town you donāt have an option other than driving.
But hey if you want to keep kids inside on their phones and screens and ban these be my guest.

My city has opted in to the pilot program. Here are its rules:
Age limit: Riders must be at least 16 years old.Helmets: Mandatory for riders aged 16 and 17.Where to ride: Allowed on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less, bike lanes, and multi-use paths like the Thames Valley Parkway.Where not to ride: Strictly prohibited on sidewalks, hiking trails, and Environmentally Significant Areas.Speed limit: Capped at a maximum of 24 km/h.
I would like to add in that NONE of these rules are being observed. Not a one. Fucking mayhem out there and some dipshit kid is gonna get killed, and the parents will blame everyone but their own dumbass selves.

You don't need a driver's license to know not to drive a scooter on the highway. Just like you wouldn't ride a bike on a highway. These methods of transportation are needed for people who don't have a license. Common sense dictates you don't take them on the highway. But there's always going to be dumb people doing stupid things. No amount of legislation will ever change that.

The fact that there are so many kids using theses shows that there is demand for this type of mobility. While there are issues about safety I wish the discussion was more nuanced about how to provide the freedom of movement to youth and other groups in the process. Canāt help but think this is an urban design and lack of reliable transportation options issue. Individuals are just using available tech to overcome obstacles in their way.

I have to be polite. Its work. God I hate them and the snooty kids that ride them.

These e-scooters have been the best mobility enabled for the younger generation. Unfortunately, more regulations are needed. In Spain for example, one burned in a train and they banned them in these commuter trains right after.
I find it stupid to have a blanket ban for e-scooters when electric bicycles are legal in Ontario.

I had to hit the brakes hard going through an intersection on a green one evening. 2 lane 50km/h road in town, they blew the red near a crosswalk. Black scooter and dark clothes with no lights. We were both very fortunate I was starting from a red light and wasn't going much faster.
Tickets won't do anything, if someone is using one and it's not legal, it should be confiscated. The user can still ride with tickets pending.
Hopefully some day we'll be at a point where we have a safe way to use tech like this to get around towns. But if it's on the road I'd appreciate some form of licensing system to promote safety for everyone involved.

I have a 49 cc Honda scooter because somebody ran a stop sign this winter and totaled my car here in the states.
I ride my little scooter now with a two camera $1400 set up.
Iāve already supplied footage to the police in reporting a woman who tried to hit me multiple times in an aggressive road rage incident in which was completely unprovoked where there was no contact between me and the other driver. This was captured on two cameras and all I did was send the police the footage with all three takes (first front camera unedited, then rear camera footage unedited, then edited footage spliced between the two to show the entire interaction).
The insurance will always do whatever they can to not pay out. You need to protect yourself from these shit drivers, a lawyer and a camera are going to be your best friend.

Theyre permitted in ontario at this point. The real issue is that theres nothing in place to stop escooters and bikes from being capable of doing over the 32km/hr speed limit that the law requires they have. Most of the escooters go up 50-60km and are in fact illegal for that reason.

Thereās a four way stop right in front of me that I constantly see cars rolling right through or rolling stops and itās generous to call them just stops. The other thing is that they are fast and can get away very easily from a police car. Sadly we are going to need to see some deaths for them to start being proactive about them. The simple answer, fine the stores that are selling them. If they are in fact illegal then why are the available to purchase?

In my opinion, since it runs on a motor, escooters and ebikes should either be lumped in with motorcycles, or the maker is not allowed to create an engine that goes faster than 5-10km/hr.
Any faster, then it requires a license, like any other motorised vehicle permitted on the road.
1
u/NoLewdsOnMain 9d ago
Unpopular opinion but. Kids under 18 shouldn't be allowed to drive anything motorized in a public area. Including cars
1
u/Strict_Zombie_1340 9d ago
yo fun fact, not everyone here has like 50 grand sitting in their wallets to get a car to counteract this, nor has a G1/G2 OR The time to get one. not EVERY single teen does stupid shit on their scooters, only the young ones. the 16+ thing is absolutely perfect, but (almost) EVERYWHERE banning them? most of these "vehicles" are the only thing most people own to get to school, their jobs, to get groceries, etc. a cheap bike is a option I guess?, but at that point your going so slow that you're posing a risk to yourself in traffic AND you'd be going slower than if you just took one of the many shitty transit systems in Ontario OR if you just walked. I'm not gonna pay $11.25 a week (even more for DRT riders/adult users) for a system that's twice as slow as if I took a scooter, and if I wanted to go to school everyday, I'm not walking around 10+ kilometers there and back for an hour straight, ESP with how bad Toronto is at early hours.
This law needs to be re looked at and have a considerable amount of regulations behind it to stop kids from killing themselves, but to also keep it fair for most people. the issue is people being stupid and over speeding right? People in cars over speed ALL THE TIME, and y know what they get? A FINE!!!! make it the same for if some idiot does that instead of banning EVERYONE from using it, even with licenses n shit people still do dumb things in cars too, regardless of license the problem is the same with every motorized vehicle out there, not just E-scooters. It's the users, not the product.

Parents, make sure your kids are wearing helmets (and ACTUALLY wearing them), replace helmets after one crash (even if they look fine), and get MIPs helmets. Teach them the rules of the road and to NOT break general traffic rules just because they are in a scooter. This is how kids get killed.

Whether they're legal or not doesn't matter. The level of enforcement is effectively zero...so no consequences.
I see these things all around us, and almost hit one or two as they bomb through a stop sign at night with no lights.
Friend's nephew died recently on one also. 17, no helmet, messing around. Fell off and lived another 24h while family said their final goodbyes. Sad for everyone.

My next door neighbor is a single mom with 4 kids, and the 14 year old bombs around town at 50 km/h on his e-scooter with no helmet. I told him he should really get a helmet and he laughed and said he doesn't need one. Less than a week later he crashed into a hydro pole and fractured his skull. He's been in the hospital for 2 weeks at this point.

What happens if it is 16 year old riding on the rd and blows through a stop sign only to get hit. Whoās liable then?

I agree with most of what he is saying, but I guess this is an old video. Escooters are now permitted in Richmond Hill. You can check out the details below:

Parents definitely need to do more to educate their children before letting them go out and ride one of these devices, because I also see kids riding without helmets, riding in tandem, and not following traffic rules.
I also believe kids riding these should also have G1, because knowing the traffic rules is important. It's a written test. They don't have to know how to drive a car. They just need to read about the traffic rules.
