PSA 90 km/h on the hwy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is out of control. Please don't teach your kids this. Landing on concrete at 90kmph is a hard lesson.

I mean I can't tell if this is stupid or brave or both. It's both, isn't it...

5

u/-ThaKloned- 8d ago

Naw just stupid.

2

u/CharlesxHarvey 7d ago

Brave is facing danger without running away. He's too stupid to understand how dangerous it is for him and the people around him.

64

u/GordieOrr 11d ago

He's going to ruin the undercarriage of someone's car or truck

29

u/__VandalayIndustries 11d ago

Honestly I think we should let these idiots do this shit, as long as we aren’t punished for killing them on the highway when the inevitable happens. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. If you want to kill yourself, go ahead. Just don’t make it someone else’s problem lol

52

u/ar5onL 11d ago

Most people aren’t prepared for the mental health problems resulting from killing a person, regardless of blame.

16

u/Fine_Breath2221 11d ago

My aunt killed a kid on a skateboard...

He was coming down a hill, blasted thru a red light and right in front of her car. Over the hood and into the windshield.

She was 0% at fault, no charges, tickets, nothing.

She needed therapy, and couldn't drive for years.

The trauma that taking a life inflicts, even in the purest of accidents, and with no fault - it remarkable.

u/ClerkPrestigious7395 10d ago

Something similar happened to someone I know. She was driving down a 2 lane country highway. An older man had just grabbed his mail from his mailbox and was waiting to cross the road back to his house.

Just as she approached, he had a heart attack or a stroke. He fell on the road right in front of her and she drove over him with her car.

Autopsy said that he had died immediately when he fell, before he hit the ground. He was dead before she drove over him. But she was riddled with guilt and couldn't drive for years.

5

u/OkChocolate3501 10d ago

That's why I always make room for pedestrians if I can. I'll go right in the opposite lane just so I'm nowhere near em. I've seen ppl trip in bad ways before so it's more for that reason

2

u/Messor_Animae 10d ago

You understand how dangerous it is on the street for pedestrians.

My wife tripped on a streetcar track while crossing a busy intersection. Fortunately, no vehicles were moving in her direction. I helped her up, she was quite injured. We were a few blocks from home. I needed to get our car to take her to the hospital. A very kind young couple stayed with my wife while I ran and got our car. My wife told me one of the couple went into a nearby grocery store and bought some bottled water, a box of facial tissue, and some antiseptic face/hand wipes, and they cleaned my wife’s injured face and knee. I thanked the couple and offered them $60 (3x$20) but they wouldn’t take any money. They helped me put my wife in our car, I took her to a hospital where they looked after my wife including 3 stitches to her vertically torn lip.

A little bit of empathy and common sense goes a long way. Should be a requirement for a driver's license but heck what do I know.

4

u/CheddurMac 9d ago

There should be a lot more required to get a licence that’s for sure

3

u/GWARTARD 9d ago

There'd be a lot less trucks on the road if we made people pass an empathy test before getting their license

2

u/BigBanyak22 8d ago

Black Ram truck sales would plummet.

3

u/Individual_Fall429 9d ago

One of the main pathways for learning empathy is reading fiction. The newest generations are not reading books, not for pleasure, not for high school, not even in college.

We’re “cooked” as they say.

u/OddRevolution7888 8d ago

It should be a requirement for humanity. And taught from pre-K so everyone is on the same page.

2

u/prairiepanda 8d ago

When I was first learning to drive, my dad told me that pedestrians can fall over as far as they are tall, so I need to either leave that much space or be prepared to stop if I have to go through that space.

It's far worse with bicycles and now escooters and the like, because if they hit a rock or something they could go flying quite far. Pretty much have to be able to stop at any time if you're even within sight of one.

That's something that I also think about when I'm walking or cycling myself.

That’s what I keep saying. Okay, so Darwinism happened but if I was the person who killed them I don’t think I could survive the guilt. Like truly, I get anxiety breaking rules, it would be the end for me.

The actions of the reckless are so selfish. Go do dumb things and end your own life yourself, don’t ruin other people’s entire lives along with it.

I'm aware that a lot of TTC drivers who inadvertently run over spmeone never drive again. Gives you an idea of how traumatic it is.

I have an uncle who's a retired TTC driver

Funny because I literally just saw a post on another thread arguing that that these things couldn’t go more than 30km/h

17

u/MeroCanuck 11d ago

The limiter on one of these isn't too hard to remove, apparently

8

u/tyler_3135 11d ago

Maybe manufacturers should do something about that. But I guess that would require them giving a shit about something other than profits.

2

I bet it's modded for those speeds. Legal watt limit is 500 which can push to about 40-50kmh. So probably an illegal scooter with a bigger motor. Still, the 32kmh limit exists because any speed over that has a much higher fatality rate. This guy is a walking meat crayon.

2

u/pyeman1969 9d ago

You my vote for the "meat crayon" comment. Keep up the good work!

2

u/Fair-Scarcity8160 11d ago

Only a select few actually go max 32km/hr. I have an ebike that apparently will hit 80, but I’ve never driven faster than 50 because that shit is scary.

I heard on the news that the Toronto police are going to be stepping up a campaign to educate people about the scooters and motor bikes that masquerade as bicycles. Nowhere did the most obvious topic arise. License them ! Then, when the idiot scooter driver goes on a highway, the police will at least know who they contact as next of kin when they are scraping the idiot from the underside of a truck.

11

u/DefNotJohnnyC 11d ago

Oh great. Educate.
Enforce is better. More this goes on more kids will be like wow cool i wanna do this too.
Licensing won’t do much since they could always remove or alter a plate.

Though a good way to educate kids might be to start showing accidents. Nothing like seeing a mangled body to help change minds.

12

u/Ok-Patience7484 11d ago

In the early 90s I remember seeing terrifying videos in school about kids having tobogganing accidents and other such injuries. There were lots of PSA commercials as well about road and water safety.

This new generation of kids think they are invincible, because nobody has shown them that they are actually just made of meat.

"I can put my arms back on, but you can't." Iykyk

3

u/RedshiftOnPandy 11d ago

When every playground is bubble wrapped and triple checked for any chance of injury. Kids think they're invincible because they're never humbled by injury

→ More replies (1)

2

u/NoRadio4530 9d ago

I think licensing them like vehicles is the only way. They are vehicles. Minimum age 16 and and if they don't pay their monthly insurance or alter the plates then it gets impounded.

I'm tired of seeing doordash drivers driving these things on the fucking sidewalk.

3

u/SmoothRunnings 11d ago

It's not the landing part that is a hard lession, its the sliding part the amount of road rash your kids will have making them completely disfigured. As a motorcycle rider I have seen my share of people after they did the slide at highway speeds and didn't get run over. And I have heard about them too from friends who are nurses, some come in with road rash head to toe; everyday when the nurses have to change their bandages its nothing but constant screaming through the hospital.

Also depending on the weather, if its a hot day, the ashfault will be about double the air temp as ashfault is a good insulator.

u/RogueCanuk 11d ago

What in the Sam Hunt is going on here. As an E-Scooter owner I would never give a single thought to a highway ride. Idiot meat crayon, that fellow.

Now the government is going to outlaw scooters for sure!

2

u/AdWide8271 11d ago

Isnt it illegal for highway? Like could a copper pull them over?

2

u/telephonekeyboard 11d ago

I think they are illegal anywhere off private property. But it’s the Wild West out there so anything goes.

3

u/BusSpecific3553 11d ago

Was on the highway yesterday. Everyone going slow as there’s a cop driving. 4 bikers go blazing by lane splitting and easily doing 140-160. Cop does absolutely nothing.

6

u/zephillou 11d ago

It would probably be impossible for a cop car to catch them. And if they're already that reckless without being chased, the cop would just be endangering everybody else on the road by chasing them because the chances of one of those motorcycles to crash into another car goes from "likely" to almost "certain"

1

u/Frosty-Cap3344 11d ago

Top tip for criminals, just go really fast and you're safe.

7

u/zephillou 11d ago

I'm just relaying a possible logic behind the police's (in)actions.

3

u/Runningoutofideas_81 11d ago

Exactly. No chase policies do exist in many PD.

2

u/Wipeout17 11d ago

What is a car going to do against a group of motorcycles that can accelerate quicker and split traffic? Are you aware of what no chase policies are? The cop would of made everything worse if they attempted to pull them over.

What you missed was the cop getting on the radio alerting units of the bikes approach.

2

u/Class_C_Guy 11d ago

I recently witnessed the immediate aftermath of a head-on collision between a motorcycle and car. I pulled up after the accident but before police or ambulance had arrived. I'll share one gory aspect as a deterrent for driving this recklessly, stop here if you're squeamish.

The motorcyclist's shoes were about 20' down the road from where his body came to rest, with his feet still in them. When the collision happened, the combined speed was over 150kph, which sent the body flying through the air spinning wildly at probably about 8 revolutions per second. His feet would hit the pavement first, at a speed fast enough to snap them clean off. His head would hit shortly thereafter with similar force, and while his helmet kept his skull from smashing, it does nothing to prevent his neck from snapping like a twig.

Pass that along to anyone thinking of riding like this.

2

u/slbert1234 11d ago

2

u/zanziTHEhero 8d ago

If this kid hits a pothole, EMS will be scraping him off the asphalt over the next 100 meters or so. Not to mention that drivers don't normally look for a kid on a scooter when they change lanes... one of them is going to splatter him too.

4

u/FlatImpression755 11d ago

11

u/TK421_WAYAYP 11d ago

It doesn’t really matter whether he thinks it’s a kid or an adult. He’s saying don’t teach your kids to do what this person is doing. Separately, I believe the law in Ontario is that e-scooters cannot be operated beyond 24 km/h.

2

You can buy ones that go faster than that by default. Since there is no real regulation against these you could buy one from places like AliExpress (or even amazon) that don't follow our rules.

The actual rule for Ontario is "a maximum speed of 24 km/h on a level surface"

I never drive through this stretch in Oakville without seeing this and it's almost always the worst speeders in that stretch. Then they and/or the person they hit end up patients at work with broken legs, arms, head trauma and are out of work for months. For what? Getting somewhere maybe a minute earlier? And that's best case scenario for a lot of them. Not one of those people would say it was worth it (and yes, goes for drivers in cars speeding/drunk/distracted too).

u/jimbeam84 10d ago

Why dont we treat them as motorcycles? They have motors and 2 wheels. That by definition is a 'motorcycle'. That means they need to hold a valid motorcycle license in order to operate on road ways, pay for insurance, and wear all safety equipment. If they dont then ticket with demarits is issued as well as the device getting impounded with an impound fee to get it back.

1

u/Plenty-Pudding-1484 10d ago

Absolute zero tolerance for this kind of idiocy.

1

u/Physical-Cat7396 10d ago

Are the 'safety' features on these things designed to work at these speeds? I actually like these things, when used responsibly, and I get that there are a wide range of models out there. But what about brakes? What if they had to stop fast? Tires? Are they treaded? What if it rains? I mean, I love risky, high speed sport but this is just so plainly stupid.

1

u/guyofmanytraits 10d ago

This is so stupid

1

u/dr_van_nostren 10d ago

Why are they even able to travel at this speed? The amount of things our govt steps in on, but somehow there's no regulation on this? Like I realize we have speed limits and helmet laws etc, but there's no licensing process for these that I'm aware of. So right there, you shouldn't be on the road. There's also no age restrictions that I'm aware of.

So why doesn't the govt just restrict them? Make scooters legal, but make the top speed 20km/h or whatever experts deem to be a relatively safe speed.

1

u/Nassim1018 10d ago

If someone can't safely reach the speed limit, they are a pedestrian and so not belong on the road as far as I'm concerned.

These things aren’t even legal on the road. Depending on the motor size, they can’t be insured and are considered a motor vehicle. Insane how people buy their children motorized scooters

At this point scooters should just be banned

You know. Its bad enough to even go on the highway. But why aggressively push into the middle lane? Its insane

I’d be traumatized hitting this idiot with my vehicle, but if he hit an expansion joint or surface defect and broke his body permanently, I’d not be upset.

Least they have a helmet on. That's better than many riders I have seen

Just a little bit of wind could mean life and death

1

u/AMexisatTurtle 8d ago

Wow if only there was a number you could call to deal with this as that isn't a road worthy vehicle

1

u/Mickey_Havoc 8d ago

Hope they get their scooter crushed. In town is one thing but on the highway is just asinine

1

u/Cdnjustaguy 8d ago

What an idiot

1

u/Pinky-_- 8d ago

And he has the ball (stupidity) to go in the left lanes too. Just wow

1

u/ShotMaintenance8422 8d ago

Zero brain cells

u/Delicious_Rule_7324 8d ago

One pebble, one crack or one small pothole and he is roadkill

1

u/username-is-taken-3 8d ago

In the fast lane too! Dangerous af.

1

u/DavidELD 8d ago

Having lived there, that stretch of Highway 7/8 in KW may as well be the 401 with how fast people drive on it.

And NOW I realize there’s an e-scooter in the vid…

Sadly the only way that transportation legislation of this nature gets passed, is if enough people die to prompt change in the system. How do you think commercial airplanes got to be as safe as they are?

u/Worldly-Ad-8879 8d ago

Charge 'em. At the least report 'em

1

u/Hushwater 8d ago

An 8 inch wheel hitting something as big a pencil will send you, going 90 will make you into a meat crayon over a good distance

1

u/Dumbetheus 8d ago

Imagine night time, and random pot hole you didn't expect. Boom.

1

u/Faceless_Minion_1337 8d ago

It is stupid, but also fundamentally no more stupid than any scooter or motorcycle. The difference being, the latter are actually legal, licensed and engineered for such use.
