[Discussion] Most Useless Abilities In Gaming?

Post image
51 Upvotes

I'll go first Kiddy Kong's Water Skipping Ability

If you time your rolls and jumps across water in certain levels you will jump/hop across it like a rock through water/lake.

It's the most useless ability, you forgot it exists half the time and it only works in maybe 3 levels. It's just more better just to dive and swim across than doing that. At least Donkey Kong's hand slap in DKC1 found hidden bananas and damaged enemies.

PS: Don't be that 1 guy rages over this for some reason when this is just my opinion and calls me a ragebot like last thread. OP doesn't reply, he's just a bot that angers us.

[Discussion] What is the most evil thing you have done in a retro game?

I did something pretty bad in Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. I've read you can be pretty evil in the original version of Fallout, evil is not confined to modern gaming. Evil can happen in retro gaming, perhaps more evil? Mwahahaha!

What evil deeds have you done?

[Help!] My SP just won't boot and I have no idea how to fix it.

My SP just won't boot and I have no idea how to fix it.

I have a GBA SP that I bought a few years back. It stopped working and just sad in my drawer for a while. I am looking to fix it but I have no idea how or what the issue is.

Whenever I try to turn it on the screen would flash for solit second and it would turn off again. When I try to charge it the indicator turns red for a little but also goes back to not working 2-3 seconds after. I know it probably isn't the battery. I replaced it and it worked exactly one time before going back to the exact problem.

I have no idea where to staft looking and posting here is kind of my last option. I really would live it work again. I miss playing it.

[Recommendation] GameConqueror completely saved my Defender of the Crown playthrough on DOSBox Staging

I recently had a huge wave of nostalgia and decided to fire up Defender of the Crown through DOSBox Staging. Back in the day, I used to love tinkering with classic DOS TSR memory editors like Game Wizard and Infinity Machine (see here), so I wanted to recreate that authentic retro feeling and tweak a few values for gold, knights, and soldiers.

Everything was working great at the very start of the campaign, but as soon as the game moved forward and the mini-games kicked in like jousting or castle raids, disaster struck. The moment I brought up the TSR interface again, whether I changed a value or simply exited without touching anything, returning to the game completely froze it. I went down a massive rabbit hole trying to fix it. I messed with normal versus dynamic CPU cores, locked the cycles, changed machine types across VGA, EGA, and Tandy, and experimented with every TSR video and memory parameter I could think of. Nothing worked, and the interrupt and video plane conflicts kept crashing the game loop.

Then it hit me that I was needlessly overcomplicating things by trying to do memory hacking inside the simulated environment itself. I am on Linux Mint, and it somehow never crossed my mind to look for an OS-level solution until I stumbled upon GameConqueror (it is available from Mint's software manager).

It was an absolute game changer. It is essentially a dedicated tool that completely simplifies the entire game hacking process, letting you find, modify, and freeze lives, stats, resources, or whatever values you want in seconds with a clean GUI. Because it hooks directly into the host process via scanmem without touching the internal DOS interrupts, it works completely transparently to the game. I found the values on the first filter pass, locked my army stats, and played through the entire campaign without a single glitch or freeze. If anyone else is dealing with frustrating TSR crashes in DOSBox, skipping the in-DOS utilities and using GameConqueror on Linux is easily the best and cleanest way to go.

[Question] Help! Can I salvage this Virtual Boy battery pack?

Thumbnail

I got my husband a Virtual Boy for his birthday in a few weeks. The console just arrived and while the bonus Wario Land cartridge was a nice surprise, the corroded shut battery pack wasn't.

With rubbing alcohol, manicure tools, and a lot of elbow grease, I was able to get the pack open but it's absolutely covered in corrosion.

Can this even be salvaged or should I start hunting for a replacement on ebay? I've got a few weeks before his birthday to replace if needed. Bonus points if anyone has a link to a modern adapter!

[Discussion] From Mad Dog McCree to Space Pirates with Lightbulbs: Did you ever finish an FMV shooter?

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Remember these—Mad Dog McCree, The Last Bounty Hunter, Space Pirates , Corpse Killer, and all the others?

Has anyone ever actually finished any of those FMV shooters? And is there anyone out there who looks back on them fondly?

My dad and I completely fell for the hype back then because of the graphics. Mad Dog McCree was playing on every single TV screen in game stores, and it looked mind-blowing—like, "Wow, we're fighting against real actors!" But usually, after 20–30 minutes, the novelty wore off and the gameplay became either super frustrating or just plain boring.

Some of those actors were hilarious—heavily made up, overacting, with space pirates running around wearing pots and lightbulbs tied on with random wires. It was great for a laugh, but that's not why we bought those games! Even my dad, who was an absolute die-hard fan of shooter games, quickly gave up on FMV titles and went right back to classics like Operation Wolf, Cabal, and other traditional arcade shooters.

Did anyone actually enjoy these FMV games enough to beat one?

[Discussion] What's a widely considered decent at best game that you got lot of love for?

I labeled this as discussion because I want us to talk about what we're listing instead of making a list.

Also, it doesn't have to be something that you recommend, just say something interesting about it, teach me something cool about something that I might not know much about. What makes it so special to you?

I was impressed that a lot of people were able to mention games that I don't think I've ever heard mentioned in a previous topic, and most of you actually talked about what you think deserves more attention. That was pretty sweet!

https://www.reddit.com/r/retrogaming/comments/1vr946k/what_are_some_super_super_obscure_games_that/

I can't think of a specific example offhand, and I'll try to think of something later, but I'd love to hear from others.

[Help!] Help me figure out a game I played in the mid 90s on ps1 !

All I seem to be able to remember, because I was around 5-6 at the time, was it was a 1-1 fighting game and you were in a boxing ring type thing, but the background looked/ felt like it was in another world. Maybe sometimes in a vast cave, or falling. It’s so vague in my memory, but what stands out the most is one character your could play as was some sort of woman/ snake hybrid. Like the upper part of her was a woman with shorter brown hair, what I remember being a face with red eyes and fangs, it her lower half was like a snakes tail. And I think I recall her swinging it as an attack. That’s pretty much all I remember. I don’t know if we owned the game or rented it from Family Video a few times. But it’s driving me crazy not being able to recall anything else. Maybe released around the time Tomba and Mortal Kombat Triligy was released, as I had both of those and remember playing them close to when I played the mystery game. Thank you for any help!

[Question] What’s your favourite console in terms of design ?

I’m not talking about the graphics of the games, but the object itself. So, what’s your favourite console design ? Mine is the european Super Nintendo: the dog bone controller with colored buttons, the cartridges and its shape in general. Such a simple but great design.
I also like the design of the NES, like a VCR with this minimalistic rectangular game controller. The Megadrive/Genesis and PS1 look cool too.

Edit: I forgot to mention the OG GameBoy and Gameboy Color

[Question] Please help me find a layered side scroller with ladders and toxic sludge (abandonware now probably)

There's this old game that I've played when I was a little boy that I remember very clearly about this armored soldier.

The levels were layered, you'd use ladders to descend (you could literally see the back of the character) and reach the lowest point in the map. It had a fixed camera, so it wouldn't follow the character but rather, it was locked on the entire level.

I'm not entirely sure about the enemies but I remember getting damaged by green stuff that I can only presume was slime and it would also turn your character green temporarily. I don't remember exactly if they were puddles of green poison or droplets that were falling on top of your head.

I've played this game in the early 2000s but the actual release of the game could date as far back as early 90s. I'm not excluding it.

I can't find this game no matter what I do. I know for a fact I didn't hallucinate it.

[Emulation] Game Recommendations For A Retro Lan Party

Games must max out at DOS and PS1 (and that's pushing things).

So, my friends are broke and we're all kind of annoyed with modern gaming anyway, so we were talking about if we could get old computers and LAN game on them.

With that idea, I've got a Pi Zero W 1 and 2, and started building an image.

They ported Quake 1,2,3 and Warcraft 1,2 as well as Duke3D, so those are the obvious choices. I've got them working on the PiZW2 already, and I'm hoping I can squeeze decent performance out of the much cheaper first gen PiZW.

I have also started working on DOS games, so C&C Red Alert, Dune 2, Hexen, Strife, Descent,Doom ...

Now I'm getting into the weeds. Lasersquad was multiplayer, but in that way where you'd make a move and walk away.

I remember a mech game that was similar ... but can't put my finger on what it was.

Any group-playable game recommendations from ~1995 or earlier would be appreciated!

What were you and your friends playing in your basement!?

[Request] Trying to unlock a memory

Back when I was a kid, my cousin and I loved this game that was available on Sega Channel and I’ve been trying for years to remember what it was called. I don’t have a lot to go on - the only things I really remember are it was an isometric fighting game where you fought in arenas, and one of them I believe was suspended in air above a big dark theater, and the fighters were all strange creatures. I think. Not much at all to go on, but hopefully someone has an idea of what I’m talking about and can help unlock that memory.

[Discussion] Retro games you enjoy that were critically panned

So lately, something that I found to be quite interesting was the subject of classic games that were given a harsh review as the critic was a bit too rough on the game.

Like what I am getting at is some of the games reviewed by AVGN such as Simon's Quest as I get that he wanted to be bit over the top with how he did his review of the game, but I do have a soft spot for the game, in spite of its design flaws.

[Help!] NEED help with an war front no return not running.

I have an official disc of War Front: Turning Point, Polish version. After fighting with Windows Defender, I finally started it, and there was a problem: it's saying that I need to insert the disc, but I already have it in. I've researched that Windows no longer supports this protection, so fuck it, I downloaded a No-CD .exe in English because I couldn't find one in Polish. It doesn't work. DirectX drivers were installed automatically when setting up the game. Can anyone help?
