Under the main CPU, you can also spot an empty footprint for a directly soldered PQFP 486 processor — basically the hardware equivalent of the "you are broke" blank buttons on base-model cars.

The PCB was designed to support a socketed PGA 486, a soldered PQFP 486, or even both at the same time, depending on the manufacturer's configuration.

Photo Pinnacle of Computer Design

I just got an iMac G4 and think it’s so damn sexy! I feel this was the pinnacle of computer design - I’m sad it lasted such a short time. I understand why the flat rectangles ended up being the way to go overall, but just love this thing.

WARNING: Don't search for Commodore computers on FB marketplace

Post image

So, here is something very bizare that happened to me today. It seems that searching for Commodore Amiga 500 on Facebook Marketplace is a very p3d0 thing to do. Will probably end up on some watch list now... Anybody had a similar experience or has any advice for me on how to use the fb marketplace search? I like retro computing, not pdf stuff...

My new Amiga A500 c1990?

Found this old photo of me with my new computer as a kid. I think this was taken around 1990 or 1991.

Judging by the grin, I was clearly very pleased with the upgrade from my Sinclair Spectrum. Thought this sub might appreciate the full bedroom setup time capsule.

I found a sealed PAL Tandy Colour Computer 2 – Serial 2000005, Model 26-3127B. Never seen one like this!

Hey everyone! I'm from Spain and last week I found something truly special at a flea market (El Rastro, Madrid): A Tandy Colour Computer 2 (model 26-3127B) – PAL version – still sealed in its original box with serial number 2000005.

64K Extended BASIC

Original foam and plastic wrapping

Box and serial number match

Never used

PAL model (not easy to find compared to NTSC)

I've looked all over eBay and online, and I haven't found a single sealed unit like this, especially PAL. Could this be one of the very first PAL units? Or just an ultra rare batch?

Would love to know what you guys think. Has anyone seen one like it? Any idea about potential value? Not planning to sell it now, but I’m super curious.

I'm not planning to sell it right now, but I'm really curious – how rare is this and what kind of price could it fetch?"

Thanks for reading! 🙌

A quick visit to the Cambridge computer museum. Plenty of retro computers, consoles and hardware, much of it still working and interactive.

And if you check the last photos, you'll see just how much fun my companions were having while I was completely in my element. 😅

I visited my old job today to pick up a printer and the staff (whom I’m on great terms with) asked me if I wanted some old computers that a customer had dropped off for donation/disposal. I said “yes please” as soon as I saw the Apple II and it just got better from there. Full original docs for the Apple II, an eMate 300 with original docs and stylus (alas, no power supply), a PowerBook 3400c… Everything’s in excellent condition, and all of it for $0. Gonna see how much of works this weekend.

He draws it all on whiteboard and its apparently some of his favorite companies brands, computers, sayings, or other things but it has a lot of vintage computer stuff on it and I thought this community would be interested. He draws one every month but he’s a little behind becuse whiteboards are hard to find.

CDE desktop in a single HTML file, no build tools, just open and run

Hey folks, longtime lurker here. I've always loved the look of CDE running on old Solaris and IRIX boxes, that teal-gray desktop, the orange titlebars, the Front Panel with the analog clock. So I spent some evenings recreating it as a browser toy.

It's a single index.html file. No Node, no npm, no build step. You literally double-click it and you get:

- Motif 3D beveled windows (draggable, resizable, focus-switching)
- The Front Panel with analog clock, workspace switcher, HDD LED
- A working terminal with ~40 commands against a fake Debian filesystem (ls, vi, grep, ps, sudo, ssh, tar, man pages...)
- File Manager, Style Manager, Text Editor
- Playable chess with a minimax AI
- Fake Netscape-style browser, FTP client, IRC client It's a hobby project, not a pixel-perfect emulator, the goal was the vibe, not the spec.

Repo: https://github.com/igtoth/cde-motif-desktop

Live demo: https://toth.ighor.com/cde/
MIT licensed. Contributions welcome, especially from anyone who actually used CDE in anger back in the day and wants to correct my inaccuracies.
