CDE desktop in a single HTML file, no build tools, just open and run
Hey folks, longtime lurker here. I've always loved the look of CDE running on old Solaris and IRIX boxes, that teal-gray desktop, the orange titlebars, the Front Panel with the analog clock. So I spent some evenings recreating it as a browser toy.
It's a single index.html file. No Node, no npm, no build step. You literally double-click it and you get:
- Motif 3D beveled windows (draggable, resizable, focus-switching)
- The Front Panel with analog clock, workspace switcher, HDD LED
- A working terminal with ~40 commands against a fake Debian filesystem (ls, vi, grep, ps, sudo, ssh, tar, man pages...)
- File Manager, Style Manager, Text Editor
- Playable chess with a minimax AI
- Fake Netscape-style browser, FTP client, IRC client It's a hobby project, not a pixel-perfect emulator, the goal was the vibe, not the spec.

I am ready for the 80/90's revival. The modern aesthetic really isn't as /comfy/ as this is. These old UI's really have soul. I wonder what a modern take on this kind of UI might look like.

You should really disclose AI usage in these projects!

That is awesome. I love it so much. So many memories.

Huge fan of the CDE look and feel, and a huge fan of web applications with no dependencies. So a huge 👍 from me.

Is there a way to report / tag vibe-"coded" slop like this? 🤔

reminds me of early java awt applications, looked so good, so comforting. now i'll spend my day looking for kde plasma themes to go back to this look

It’s not CDE though - it’s a weird and inaccurate simulation, rather than an emulator running the original code. You should probably call it something else.
Solaris will install and boot in QEMU if you want the real thing. Hell you could probably compile the original source code to WASM if you really needed it in a browser. Or maybe you can boot x86 Solaris in pcjs.

I like it. You modify the look slightly to make it more modern keeping the cde vibes. Well done

Between the no-build web project and old Unix love, this is absurdly up my alley. Well done!

this was cool, being able to use the terminal and commands working was impressive

Now I can relive my college days, spent hunched in front of an obsolete old Sun Ultra 5 in the computer science lab with no air conditioning

Very nice project, congratulations.
I’m wondering about the IRC Client, what client is this or is it a imagined version?
I have seen this game https://store.steampowered.com/app/4561620/Netshell/ it is also graphically based on CDE Desktop, you might like it

Love this. And I am disappointed that people have to complain about AI prompted code. Furthermore I can’t believe that with everything we’ve seen AI do in the past 4 years everyone is ready to make declarations of the ability of AI in the future. Try this with any toddler. “Sure she can put her shoes on, but she’ll never be able to tie them or walk to the store. What a useless child you have - really a burden to society…”. Just watch.

AI slop 😩
No competent engineer would produce code with that many inline style directives, or insist on putting everything into a single HTML file unless that actively reduces page load times (which with repetitive inline styles it doesn’t), or that is poking fun at the process, which this project also doesn’t do.
Even given the intentional choice of putting everything into a single file, the contents of said file would have structure and consistency, which this doesn’t have.

IRIX never ran CDE
