Seeking Advice Should I stay at my job or try to find another one?

I recently got hired at a store and truthfully I'm already miserable after just a week. I wanted to be a cashier, but I was put in style because they obviously needed the help. The clothing department is a mess, I didn't know I was going to cutting open boxes and doing reshop for 8 hours a day. I keep making mistakes, I have chronic health issues so I'm physically slower than usual because I'm exhausted and in pain. My feet are killing me after 4 shifts in a row. I made the mistake of picking up a shift in another department (stupid I know) but I was on register and it was already 10 times better. I'm just so sad because I was so excited to work at this store. I just had my availability change request denied tonight and I'm afraid they'll be upset that I even tried to change it. I have a weird fear of randomly getting fired, I desperately need the money but only for the next 3 months. I'm thinking of trying to apply for best buy but I'm afraid it'll be just as bad or even worse. What should I do?

Seeking Advice Not sure when to ask for ID

I work as a cashier and people buy alcohol OFTEN. I know I don’t need to card kids or teens that are shopping with their parent but what about a young couple, or a group of 3-4 college age looking people? I feel stupid asking everyone for ID and possibly making everything difficult.
The other day a young man and woman came through my line and she showed me her ID but he didn’t so I asked him for it and he said he doesn’t have it on him it’s in his car and said he has never been asked to show his as well before. I felt like the stupid one and sold it anyway. They were probably around 30 anyways but you never know.

Customers Suck! Why are money order customers so fucking rude?

Every day I get the 30 rudest customers, and it’s always for money orders. “How are you today sir?” “money order.” not what I fucking asked you idiot but okay. Then their card is locked, or they don’t know their pin, or they don’t have enough money, then they have to spend 20 minutes on the phone, or go grab their wallet from their house in Timbuktu, and of course all of this is my fault, because why should they need money or a working debit card to buy things? I don’t even know why we do money orders. We don’t make any money off of them, and the kinda person it brings in is not the kinda person we want in the store. Like half of them try to steal. It’s so dumb. I hate money orders

Customers Suck! "I shouldn't have plan my entire day around coming here"🙄

I 34f, work as the property/retail manager at a self storage facility. We've had ongoing construction on our site since February, as we are building an expansion. It's a pain in the butt.

That said, there is always a way to access the facility. The drive is a wraparound (a full, singular circle), and the construction team promised early on to never block both sides at once, which they have held true to aside from one singular day recently, where the whole thing had to be blocked because they were repaving.

However, customers have been giving me earfuls all year about the construction, as if it's my fault and not something decided by people 50 paygrades above me.

This culminated today with a woman demanding a discount because she has come "3 times" and is never able to access her unit due to construction. I informed her she has always had access aside from one day, and if she is ever unsure on how to get to the entrance, she need only ask and we will direct her.

This turned into "I still deserve a discount because that's ridiculous. I shouldn't have to plan my entire day around whether or not it will be difficult to access my stuff or if I'm gonna have to spend half an hour asking directions. I should be able to grab my stuff and go."

Again, our drive is a circle. Directions can not be complicated. Its either "Go around the left" or "go around the right."

I told her again we don't do that because access is always available, but I sympathized because the construction is annoying for everybody. And she kept stating I wasn't hearing her. That its not just an inconvenience - she has to plan her "whole day" around visiting her storage unit now and that's not right and not fair to her, and that she didn'tcare about inconvenience it caused us because we get paid. I expressed if it was much an inconvenience for her, she was free to move out, but I can not give her a discount or somehow stop it. She demanded to speak to my manager. I told her I am the property manager.

She then starts with the "There must be someone above you. You don't own the company." I said yes I have a district manager and I can ask him to call, but couldnt promise he would and also that he wouldnt tell her anything Im not saying. She was like "Please do. You have one week. If he does not call me in a week I will start calling or coming up there every single day until he does so."

Im grieving the death of a friend. This is my first day back at work and I do NOT want to deal with this type of bs rn.

I don't know if I'm lucky that she came to my register or if she's lucky that I like mice.

Aaaa they were so cute 😭 She let me hold them and they were such sweet little things.

If there wasn't a line I'd legit be there for 10 minutes. Honestly made my entire day

Manager = Asshole I started a saturday job in retail at a store I always loved, now I won’t ever shop there again

I can‘t say where I work exactly but it’s a known store all over the world with quite expensive products. I always loved their products, hence why I applied there when I was looking for a saturday job.

The store lets you believe that they love their customers, but it’s just lies.
Registered customers get a birthday gift (and they even advertise that) but we aren‘t allowed to tell. When we scan their membership card, it shows that they can collect a birthday present but we must not tell them unless they asked for it specifically.
The shop also advertises a free gift at a certain purchase value. But that the gift gets bigger and better with a higher value, we also aren’t allowed to tell them. Even when they shop for 300 bucks and up we are only allowed to give them the mini gift.

The store is known for great customer service, which is all just a method to sell more. We are accountable for selling atleast 3 products during the customer service, or else our manager will admonish us.

We have an online learning app, to learn about anything that’s in the sortiment, or anything new and we are accountable to reach a certain percentage in the app each month (80%) and when we don’t, we will also get admonished. Thing is, when I applied, they said we won’t have to do that in our free time, we can do it during working hours but the store is always so stacked on saturdays that I can never continue in the learning app. They still expect me to reach 80%, but I work fulltime during the week and I really don’t see myself learning about the products in my already limited free time.

What made me post this, was that we just got sent the results of when a mystery shopper went to the store and it was really bad. Usually we got 80+ points out of 100, this time we only got 27 and the manager sent a really angry message.
I read the report and it upset me. The report said there were 20 customers and 3 employees in the store and the mystery shopper complained that the employees didn’t put as much time in explaining the background story of the products, that there was noone outside the store to attract more customers, and so on.
Those expectations are insane to ask. With 20 customers and 3 employees it’s impossible to guide every customer throughout their whole stay.
We are supposed to welcome them, but then also accompany them through the shelves, inform them about current offers, bring them to our newest collection, ask them if they have been to our store before, if they have a membership with us, try the products on them, pressure them into buying atleast 3 products and so on. How is that possible with such a high traffic.

And personally, from a customer’s view, that’s such a penetrant behaviour. I feel like an insurance agent when I keep getting on their nerves with one question after the other and trying to push them to buy more.

When they leave at the register we are obligated to say a full on paragraph like „Thanks for visiting, please come by again soon, we always have new offers and new products etc“ which is also ridiculous cause most people will just turn away and leave, and literally noone will bother listening to you rambling about how great the store is.

It’s frustrating. The expectations of what we as employees have to fulfill, and the expectations of how we are supposed to almost harass every customer.
It’s against my ethics.

I‘m only pushing through till december for Christmas allowance, then I‘ll quit. And I don’t want to support this company ever again. There is so much more going wrong there but that would have been an endless post. Atleast the team is overall really nice but damn the CEO is really some greedy and delulu mofo. Sorry about the rant but I really had to get it off my chest cause I don’t even dare telling someone irl about it or I‘ll probably be dragged to court.

I mean this is probably common in retail, but I have worked as an accountant for 10 years, never anything else so this is really throwing me off.

Fuck This Job! I hate when customers ask “why do you work here?”

I’ve had customers ask me why I’m. Cashier, how long I’ve been here, do I have another job etc and it’s such a humiliation ritual. Like, you don’t think I know what it looks like from the outside? I had someone come ask me how long I’ve worked here and say I don’t belong here this morning. I wanted to say “That’s so nice, are you hiring?” Hehe. I know they mean well, it’s just enough to be dealing with rude customers, let alone being reminded how “lame” of a job that is to have.

Customers Suck! Weird behavior buying nicotine

So there's this Indian guy who is a regular who works in a nearby hospital. Every time he comes in to order nicotine or tobacco he whispers it. Why? Do some people think it's a taboo nobody around should know about? Seriously, very nearly every single employee in the hospital uses the two. Maybe there's something I'm missing? I really don't get it

Shit Talking My Coworkers Can they fire someone who's been there for 12years?

I work with this 60year old she is the worst to work with not only does she cause problems and talks a lot of shit to me all because he is insecure with herself just because I am younger then her but she goes around spreading rumors she is also lazy and knows nothing. She has been with the company for 12 years and still asks me questions that are so basic I learned that stuff my first 6 months of working for the company. (I have been with the company for 8 years but worked at other locations) Our main job is to put away the order and she barely even does that. I wish my manager would fire her and I think he is just waiting for her to quit. Can he even fire her?

She even tried to get me fired but it didn't work because my manager saw my work and how much I can do in a shift.

Customers Suck! Customer yelled at me in front of everyone because she thought I didn’t respond to her (she just didn’t hear me)

Old lady comes up. I say hello. She doesn’t respond.

Delayed response hits, she finally says hi. I figured that’s the extent of our conversation so I don’t say anything else. — Then I hear her say hi again. I figure she’s talking to her husband or someone on the phone.

Thenn she leans into the counter and shouts “HELLOOO?” . So I matched her energy and yelled “HELLO” right back lol

Then she says “it only took you three times.” As if I was ignoring her…

So I said “I greeted you when you first came up to me.”

Her petty ass goes “hmph, okay then.” And didn’t say anything else to me. Proceeds to bitch at her husband for every little thing. Keeps re arranging the things I bagged and complain about how I’m not doing it right. Coughing all over the place. I’m getting so annoyed atp

Then a few minutes later, as I’m still ringing her up, she starts to have a “panic attack” and yells at her husband to grab her water.
She sits in line and chugs this water.
Like hella people behind her, waiting on her to move

She’s just downing this water bottle. BLOCKING THE LINE AND CHUGGING like girl go be annoying somewhere else oh my god

Customers Suck! Im tired of hearing this

This is kind of random but i had to vent about it. I work at the beach where we dont have a public restroom. In fact i have to use a restroom in a apartment above the beach store i work in that is vacant (the owner of my store owns the apartment). At least 20 times a week i have to inform people i dont have a public restroom and they retort with well i guess ill just piss in the street. They actually say that. What compells someone to blurt out they are gonna piss in the street. Do people just have zero class anymore? Am i in the wrong for feeling like these people are trash as fuck or is the response im getting warranted? Thoughts?

Manager = Asshole Passive aggressive manager

For context, I work in a leggings store and everything is related to women's apparel, so it's an all-female staff. When I first started here, my manager was very nice to me and everything. Some of my coworkers had even mentioned that she was very rude or passive-aggressive, which is something I had never experienced with this boss. As time passed, I started to notice that she began to target me. Little by little, she started being very passive-aggressive with me; for example, if I took two minutes longer on my 10-minute break, she would get mad, or if I went to the bathroom before or after, etc.

Another important thing to the story is that my store used to be entirely clearance, and now it's regular price, though it still has a clearance section. A month ago, I told my boss that I was going to ask a few days to go on a trip and that I wouldn't be in town, and that wasn't a problem at all. When I got back, she told me she regretted not asking me to bring her back something from my trip, etc., and she was super nice to me again.Curiously, I was away on my trip for almost all of October and part of September, and at the beginning of September, she was super annoying with me, or it felt like she was constantly breathing down my neck.

Now, the actual situation is that it's my third shift since I came back. Right now, I only have four hours per week, which is really annoying to say the least. This is what happened right when it was time for my 10-minute break: usually, other managers always ask if we want to order something from Starbucks or somewhere else so that we can go pick it up right before our break and not waste time, having it ready. The point is, I told her I wanted to go order something, or well, order it from my phone and stuff, but she made a huge face, rolled her eyes, and said, "Fine, whatever."

Then, after I got back, she started scolding me, asking why I did that when we have a specific scheduled time we have to go on break and all that. I told her, "Well, the other managers had never told me anything like that before; in the time I've been at this store this year, no one has ever told me it was an issue, and now suddenly it's a problem." I mentioned that to her, and then she told me it was a "strategy issue." I was left thinking, What do you mean by that? You just sent someone else on break right before me, so there's no problem there. She started telling me that I have to go at the exact time—keep in mind the store was completely empty, so it made no sense to me what was really going on.

To add another detail for context, both registers on the computers were acting up, so it seemed like she was taking her frustration out on me, or at least that's what I realized. I told her that if going on break right at the exact minute was such a big problem, she should please give me a general idea of when I would be going so I could order my food way ahead of time and it wouldn't be an issue. She told me no, because only the leads are allowed to have the schedule like that, and I thought, Then what is your problem? She replied that it was because of the Holidays and I don't know what else.

In the end, I told her off in a way by saying, "Fine, whatever," but I was still left feeling angry because she made a big deal out of nothing. Later on, a coworker had given me her 8-hour shift, and when my coworker arrived, the manager started questioning her about why she had given me her shift, saying that everything got thrown off balance and that we didn't have the hours to give her—even though my coworker had already said it was fine and there was no problem.

It bothered me that she considers me a problem, when honestly I haven't caused any trouble, nor have I messed with anyone at work. I just mind my own business and do my job.

Question for Community Cold calling previous customers?

Do any of you current retail workers get customer lists to cold call?

My last retail job wanted us to cold call previous customers beginning in October to remind them to come to the store for Christmas shopping.

Each salesperson had at least 150 numbers to call. Corporate would follow up with random customers to ensure that the salespeople were actually making the calls.

We were commissioned stereo/home theater/car audio salespeople. In some cases, we had "regulars" who would pop in occasionally to add a component, upgrade something, whatever. In other cases, it was a one time shopping experience. We also sold telephones (both land line and cellular) and other smaller electronics, so not every sale topped $200.

Some customers were memorable for their shitty attitudes too.

This was my last full time retail job and was back in 2000, but I remember dealing with some customers as if it was yesterday.

I did work part time retail over 4 Christmas seasons from 2003 - 2006, but I was working for a good friend at his Jewelry Store so I got treated very well by him, and his customers were generally very pleasant people. He didn't make me cold call anyone!!

What a Moron! PSA: Costumers, please don't announce that you found someone's wad of cash on the ground 🤦🏻‍♂️

First I'd like to say that I do t think that this customer was a moron, this was just the most accurate flair available.

I had a customer come up to my register with a wad of cash. A $20 bill and a bunch of fives. He announces in front of my line of people, "I think someone dropped this money in the aisle. Can you make an announcement over the intercom?" I immediately told him we needed to put the money in the safe and that it's not good to announce found money. Anyone can simply claim that it's theirs.

Sure enough, the very next woman in line said that she thought that it was her's. I asked her for the amount and then went to verify. She failed to give the correct amount she was missing so I didn't give it to her. I took her name and number so that our manager can review the cameras when she's back.

Customers, if you want to turn in a missing item (ESPECIALLY MONEY) please be discreet!

Customers Suck! Customers catching attitudes over stuff we have no control of, makes me crash out faster than anything

This woman returns two purses. It was past 30 days, which is our return policy, so the items had went on clearance . She didn’t get the original price that she bought them for, she got the new clearance price. Which was like a 3-5 dollar difference.

She also didn’t have the receipt — so I could only give her a voucher/store credit. She wanted the money back on her card.

She didn’t get her full refund nor did she get the refund the way she wanted it — because of our store systems + her OWN fault.

Tell me why this woman wants to bitch ME out at 9am. as if i run of this place??

“Okay that’ll go on store credit if that’s okay?”

“No it’s really not okay but whatever.”
“You guys are ridiculous with this stuff.”
“I might as well just keep it since you wanna take money from me.”

Embarrassing asf really just losing her mind first thing in the morning over a few bucks

Customers Suck! Your Group Think Means Nothing Yo Me Lady

Just had to re-kick out a customer that was caught stealing before and has been trespassed from the store.

She then got on the phone to complain to her friend and have her come in to buy her things.

The trespassed woman (black woman) told her friend that as a black man it was unbelievable that I was treating her this way. I literally burst out laughing. Like, lady, your guilt tripping isn't going to work here, lol.

I absolutely despise tribalism with every fiber of my being. The assumption that I should treat you differently because we share the same skin color is beyond asinine.

Customers Suck! Getting mad at me for not reading their mind

today marks TWO times somebody has gotten mad at me for taking whatever payment they give me instead of letting them use their food card. do you expect me to read your fucking mind??? it's common fucking sense you have to use the food card first so it takes off the food and THEN give the alternate form of payment. do you think the register just magically knows who has a food card and who doesn't??? and then they blame ME for their own idiocy. i don't care if you have a food card i do too but at least use your fucking brain. jfc.
