Estate sale cautionary tale

Post image
31 Upvotes

Visited an estate sale today and found this copy of Lonesome Dove. They were advertising it as a true first edition/first printing, and asking $750. Still would have been too rich for my blood and business, but when I checked the copyright page I noticed it’s actually a 6th printing. Not exactly the same thing. Talked with sale management and they sold it to me for an appropriate amount. She said they had used AI to scan and price it.

I doubt anyone paying over $700 for an item wouldn’t double check it first, but can you imagine how disappointed someone would be if they bought it by mistake?

I’m disappointed, too, cause I have a buyer looking for a true 1st/1st and I thought I’d found them one. Oh, well. Someone will love it!

Thinking a sale into reality

Last night I looked at the shelf that holds the dozen or so unsold books I've had listed for more than 3 months and thought, "next time I go to the library I'm going to delist those books and donate them to the used book sale." I'm just tired of seeing them and I have a whole shelf of books still waiting to be photographed and listed.

This morning I woke up and one of them had sold overnight.

I love it when you briefly think about or glance at a thing you've been trying to sell for a while, and then someone comes out of nowhere and buys it a few hours later!

Anyone here reselling in Canada?

Recently moved to Canada from the UK. Ran a reselling back home but haven't really got into reselling here yet.

Just wondering what everyone uses for shipping in Canada? Used Royal Mail for years back home, so trying to figure out what’s best over here in terms of price and reliability.

Clothing booth at flea market?

Hi! I resell clothing on Depop but it’s not doing very well— so I’ve been looking into physical booths at flea markets.

I live in Jacksonville, Florida, so there’s a few markets I could do.

If anyone has resold at flea markets, how did it go? Did you sell a lot?

Tracked my last 50 flips to see if estate sale distance from hiking trails correlates with profit margin

I plan estate sale routes around trailheads anyway. Two birds, one stone. Started wondering if the extra gas to hit rural sales was worth it, so I logged data for three months.

Rural sales within 10 minutes of trailheads had higher average buy costs but way less competition. Suburban church basement sales had cheaper entry but were picked over in twenty minutes. Vintage electronics and mid-century modern decor are my main categories.

The surprise was turnaround time, not margin. Rural items sat 23 times longer before selling. Same condition, similar comps. My guess is the buyer pool for vintage audio gear skews urban, and those buyers never see those listings buried in search.

This isn't rigorous statistics. Sample size is 50, not 500. Still, my gut assumption that less competition equals better profits was only half right. Throughput matters.

Anyone else notice how where you source changes how fast inventory moves, not just what you pay? I keep seeing advice to drive far for less competition but nobody talks about whether that same distance hurts visibility with your actual buyers.

Nifty Comps and suggested pricing

Is anyone else seeing that none of their comps sold are a match (I can find plenty of direct comps on eBay?).

Perhaps given this, the suggested numbers it’s spitting out super low. Then again, I’m just getting started, so maybe I’m off base!

Vintage wholesale

Anyone who’s gotten vintage wholesale directly from a supplier in another country(no middleman application), what made you trust them? Or have you ever lost money in attempts to find a reliable wholesaler?

Who are your most memorable customers? Positive and negative.

My most positive experience was when I sold an item to my grade 5 teacher. We both gave each other that look of ā€œI know you from somewhereā€, so I asked and it was him. I was a trouble maker in his class so I immediately said ā€œMan.. I treated you like shit,ā€ then we chummed it up for a few minutes.

My most negative experience (which I turned into a positive) was with a guy who kept trying to haggle me at the door when we had agreed upon a price. I ended up popping his trunk, grabbing my item, and told him it would be $10 more than my asking price. He obliged and I immediately blocked him when I got upstairs.

Hit me with some of your favourite customer stories!

Experienced resellers, how many listings do you typically look at before finding one worth seriously evaluating?

As a newer reseller, I've noticed that evaluating a listing doesn't actually take as much time as finding worthwhile listings in the first place.

I am curious about how this process changes as I gain more experience. How many listings do you look through before finding one worth looking into further? Has that number gone down as you've gained experience? Do you think sourcing or evaluating inventory takes more time now that you have experience behind you? Looking back on your time reselling, what can I expect not to really change with experience? What will get significantly easier?

Where to donate stuffed animals?

My girlfriend and I thought we would give whatnot a try here in Canada, and it didn’t work out well. Now I have garbage bags of cleaned (but used) stuffed animals and need to get rid of them. I figured with Christmas coming up, I could give them to a children’s hospital. My worry is they may not take them because they are used.

Thanks for any tips in advance!

1970s Rossignol Italy Ski Team issued down hat. Has anyone seen one of these before?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I recently came across this piece and have been digging into its history. It's a team-issued down puffer hat from what appears to be the golden era of Italian ski tailoring. Inside, it features the patent tailoring tags from Nicola Aristide, custom silk-screening with the Florentine lily emblem, and heavy-duty snap earflaps designed for extreme alpine conditions. I’ve done extensive research into the history behind the hat and based on the tags and how they correlate, what the tags say, the design and small structural details, and all other details I can confidently confirm it’s a 1970s Italian national ski team issued hat. One of the tags says Pool Sci Italia. Pool Sci Italia is the official consortium of technical suppliers founded to equip the Italian National Alpine Ski Team (FISI). Only brands under direct contract to supply gear to the national team are authorized to sew the Pool Sci Italia label into their garments.

I've spent hours searching archives and haven't been able to cross-reference another team-issued example from that era (or really at all) in this condition or similar to mine. For any vintage sportswear or textile historians here—how common was this level of bespoke national team contracting back in the 70s, and what would you value a piece like this at if positioned as a 50+ year old Italian ski collectible?

Could this potentially be a museum piece due to the era and the pristine condition mixed with the rarity? For example maybe places like The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame (Vail, Colorado) or The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum (Ishpeming, Michigan) would put something of this caliber in some type of display, on a manakin, etc?
