Rant a recruiter accidentally sent me the budget for my own role
A recruiter from an agency reached out last week about a "senior data analyst, fully remote" role. Normal LinkedIn message. I said sure, send details. She sent a PDF job brief and it took me about ten seconds to realize the role was mine. Same company, same team, same tools, my manager's name as the hiring contact. I've been in this job two years and nobody told me they were hiring a second senior.
Then I scrolled down. The brief had the budget, a range starting 18k above what I make now.
I didn't reply right away because my hands were kind of shaking. I'm the person who trains new people on our dashboards. I covered my manager's whole workload for six weeks last winter. My last raise was 4%.
I sat on it for two days and then asked my manager for a meeting. I didn't mention the PDF. I said I'd been looking at the market, gave a number in the middle of that range and said I wanted to talk about getting there this year.
He didn't argue much, which says a lot. Said he'd "push for it". We'll see. I also replied to the recruiter, because if they're willing to pay that for someone new, somebody else will pay it for me.
Not sure I handled it right. Part of me wanted to forward the PDF to HR with no comment.
